I was worried about him, and wrote to see if he and his wife are still alive. Thank God he's okay. He wrote:

Yes, my wife and I are fine. We are pretty angry about the extension because what's another month and a half in an infants life without their parents. It is just too stupid. It seems like our brigade is losing people on a daily basis. My wife is the Executive Officer for the brigades Medical Support Company so she get's to see the casualties everyday, worrying whether or not I might be on the next MEDEVAC into her aid station. It doesnt seem to be getting any better.
I have not received any packages yet, but the mail takes time around here. I'll get it eventually.
Then he wrote this in the comment section here:
It doesnt seem that our presence is helping to do anything but get more American's killed or injured and for what no one knows. I know an officer who confesses to be a stalwhart NeoCon, but he asked me the other day, "What the f--- are we doing here? I just dont get it." When they've lost those people I think they have lost just about everyone. My soldiers ask me what we're doing here, and I can't tell them because I can't lie to them and I can't make disparging or "disdainful remarks" (Art. 88 UCMJ) about the President, the VP or their Cabinet members.
A lot of people are really questioning it now that we have been extended.
We know why we have to stay a little longer, but it doesnt make it any better or any safer.....At least if we were making headway it would count for something. But that begs the question what are we supposed to be making headway towards? Noone seems to know. So, I just do my job and keep my men and myself safe another 5 months and then I get to come home.

More than five years after President Bush created the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, the former second-in-command of that office is going public with an insider’s tell-all account that portrays an office used almost exclusively to win political points with both evangelical Christians and traditionally Democratic minorities.
The office’s primary mission, providing financial support to charities that serve the poor, never got the presidential support it needed to succeed, according to the book.
Entitled “Tempting Faith,” the book is not scheduled for release until Oct. 16, but MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” has obtained a copy.
“Tempting Faith’s” author is David Kuo, who served as special assistant to the president from 2001 to 2003. A self-described conservative Christian, Kuo’s previous experience includes work for prominent conservatives including former Education Secretary and federal drug czar Bill Bennett and former Attorney General John Ashcroft.
We are investigating this despicable tax-loophole for the religious right, which enables them to work at getting the vote out for their evangelical wing. How on earth is this legal? Why are right-wing churches the only ones who benefit from this? Did they help the Katrina victims in the name of God? Funny I never heard of a single right-wing evangelical mega church helping the Katrina victims in a big way.
George Bush, God Bless him, cannot be trusted. We cannot believe a single thing he says. He is incapable of telling the truth, admitting he's wrong or taking responsibility for his mistakes. M. Scott Peck defines these types as "people of the lie." In other words, evil. Bush flippantly denies a Johns-Hopkins report that says over 655,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed as a result of our "war to bring peace and stability." BUSH JUST DENIES THE INVESTIGATIVE STUDY by a prestigious university research team, Johns-Hopkins! The Pentagon has pointedly refused to count the dead (despite international law that requires any occupying military force to count its victims and pay reparations).
What a load of Orwellian doublespeak. He never once acknowledges the 300 billion dollar cost of his wonderful war. He never once stands over a coffin or attends a funeral for the public to see. And what he conveniently failed to mention in his speech today is this: that before he took office, gas prices were HALF what they are even now; the catastrophic deficit was a suprlus, and the economy was soaring. We are supposed to be grateful for the slight turnaround by big oil right before the elections.
He states that he suddenly had a change of heart: it's best to have allies. Great! Why couldn't he have realized this before invading Iraq and upsetting the balance of the entire world?
Lying through his teeth he impugned the patriotism of Democrats as "cut and run" while saying he wasn't impugning their patriotism. DEMOCRATS are far more patriotic than this administration; we demand an end to death and violence in Iraq. We cannot aford to lose any more troops. Onnly a moron would stay where we are not wanted. Let the Iraqis find their own way now.

THE AMAZING AMISH
Lancaster County in Mourning. The Amish are the most amazing people. If only the whole world were like this, we'd have peace on earth. "I was thinking... of how these people who do absolutely nothing to bring attention to themselves are now a candle on the hill for the whole world to see. It's an impressive thing to witness." - comment from the Daily Herald of Utah.
Blessed are the peacemakers. This is exactly the reaction that Christ would have had in this situation. What happened here is a lesson for all of us. In light of the recent tragedies in the one-room schoolhouse, with ten little girls shot and five murdered by an outsider, the fact that members of victims' families actually went to comfort the murderer's father and wife — is astonishing. They forgave the family of the murderer. This is a supreme example of Christ's power of forgiveness.
I believe this incident is an example for us to follow; it's as if God had no other way of getting our attention: this is the way we are to treat our enemies, this is how we must behave in the wake of "terrorist attacks." When will we ever get it? (And me included?) Hatred, retaliation and revenge only cause more of the same, as we are learning in Iraq. True forgiveness of one's enemies, heals all.
"This isn't surprising. It is common for the Amish to invite car drivers who have killed one of their community members to the funeral. Such a compassionate response reveals a belief that each individual is responsible to counter violence by expressing comfort - a sort of prayer in action. After Monday's killings, the grandfather of one of the slain girls went to the home of Roberts's father, consoling and hugging him, pouring forth a love and innocence of the kind remembered of the girls in the school. "He extended the hope of forgiveness that we all need these days," said a Roberts family spokesman, the Rev. Dwight Lefever of Living Faith Church of God. "'God met us in that kitchen." - The Christian Science Monitor
"The Amish are exhibiting what all the Giant religions that surround them talk about but for some reason have been unable to magnify... I pray for myself that I can magnify forgiveness in my life to the degree that the Amish have made part of their daily existence." - comment from Daily Herald.
And this comment: "Some of us outside of the Amish community have had horrific things happen in our families and chosen to take the high road because of the desire to live our religious beliefs-- we've chosen forgiveness instead of lawsuits and revenge." And although I will be the first to admit my flawed character, I've had the opportunity to forgive placed before me by something huge happening in my life, and I like to think I passed the test. Please give some credit to at least a portion of those people who belong to the "giant religions" out there. They aren't all hypocrites. Are they?"
Now if only America could pass that test. Imagine the beautiful repercussions. We as Christians should be modeling this behavior in our everyday lives. I know that I personally need to be better at this myself. I know that my first reaction is to get mad when somebody does something to me that I do not like. Instead of getting mad, I need to follow Christ’s example and forgive. [...]

Just amazing. Fox's O'Reilly Factor just covered the Mark Foley (R-FL) issue in two different segments, one of them with a page who says he received communications from Foley, and another with Ann Coulter.
Never mind the content of either segment for now. Incredibly, during a total of three different cutaways to video footage of Foley, he was labelled at the bottom of the screen eachtime as "(D-FL)" !

Boehner said he told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert and that Hastiest assured him 'we're taking care of it.'" This sounds like it revolves around the incident Rodney Alexander reported to Tom Reynolds and the GOP leadership when Foley tried to seduce a young page from his district.

THE ARCHITECT OF EVIL
Warning: This is a mock photo of Rove being taken to jail. In a legitimate government, war criminals should be put into prison. So why are Cheney, Rove and Bush allowed to roam free? Good Christians should know how corrupt their leaders are. It is immoral to support these people. Wake up.
Last night went to Teddi and Marci Winograd's Progressive Democrats event for James Moore, and heard him speak on his new book "The Architect" about Karl Rove. Bush is a puppet of Rove and Cheney, but Rove is the mastermind of manipulation. He was behind the amoral swiftboating of John Kerry. Imagine attacking a war hero for his strengths. Rove uses incredibly corrupt and devious tactics to win power. You won't believe some of the things he has done — and continues to do in the name of "democracy."
Also, the release of the National Intelligence Estimate, a compiled report from all 16 US intelligence agencies, states that the war in Iraq has increased terrorism around the world, against our trooops and against the U.S.
But WE KNEW THAT. Anyone who had a brain, knew that a military invasion of Iraq would create more terrorists, and actually create a hotbed of terrorists, inflaming more and more people against us.
First it was Weapons of Mass Destruction and that has been proven wrong. Then it was Iraq\Al Queada ties, and thats been also proven wrong. Finally, it was "to fight em there so we don't have to fight em here". And now, a report prepared by every US intelligence agency says thats a crock, and that the war in Iraq is actually increasing the number of terrorists instead of reducing it, something most of us knew and have been articulating for about a year now.
It's clear that no amount of clarity and no measure of facts will help this poor President come to grips with the reality of his failed policies and failed strategies. Only removal from office will help him to see it, and its time to talk impeachment. Mr Bush. Your 15 minutes are up.

To allow the terrorists to define our lives for us, to "hop" to their commands and live in fear of their threats, is to give them too much power. In fact, by focusing on fighting our enemies, is to empower them and bring them to life. Bush, who calls himself a Christian, should know this, especially if he's the leader of the free world. Anyone with any sense knows this.
Why don't modern-day pharisees get it? Why can't they see themselves? Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Tom Delay, Tim LaHaye, Bush, Cheney, Coulter are bogged down in primitive eye-for-an-eye Old Testament thought. This will get us nowhere but to chaos and hatred. Whatever you fight becomes larger. What you focus on GROWS.
FIRST THIS TRAGIC NEWS: 16,000 HOMELESS CHILDREN in L.A. including 5,000 infants, toddlers and preschoolers. There are over 88,000 homeless people here, altogether, on any given night. Today at church I could not stop crying hearing our pastor, Mark Brewer, along with Bobby Shriver (Mayor of Santa Monica and Maria's brother) speak about the tragic situation. God Bless these poor little souls. They suffer from malnutrition, depression, suicide and despair. "What does it say when a society as rich as ours allows our most vulnerable people — our children — to live on the streets?" Pastor Brewer founded IMAGINE LA.ORG to make sure every single child has a permanent bed to sleep in. I am getting my children involved in helping homeless children, instead of yearning for "the new Nintendo or a mansion with a tennis court." The values of our culture are pathetically upside down.
Ancient Indians believed Sedona was a sacred land. It must be, for there is no other explanation for the bliss I feel whenever I think of Sedona's majestic beauty. What is it about this place? Our family spent an entire day at a vortex, where there are no cell phone waves in the air, and we enjoyed nature all day together without having to speak. I also loved Flagstaff; it's like driving through the past, a simpler time, through endless pine trees and crisp clean air. Dennis Taylor sent me some amazing photos of the Grand Canyon too, which I'll post later.
What Bush and his administration is capable of is bone-chilling. Torture? Are they kidding? If we are to win hearts and minds, we have to abide by the principle of "attraction, not promotion." How can we sell our brand of democracy if we are no better than the barbarians who torture? And how can we expect our own soldiers to be treated humanely, if we ourselves violate this most basic moral code?!! These terrorists are no different than any other enemy in history. Why is it okay for the U.S. to break the Geneva convention codes just because these are Muslim terrorists?
Now THIS is UNBELIEVABLE!! Bush was asked point blank why don't we go into Pakistan to get Osama Bin Laden, since Pakistan has admitted giving Bin Laden and his Taliban friends a safe haven, and Bush shockingly said, "We can't send troops into Pakistan — its' a sovereign nation." WHAT?!! Osama Bin Laden, "the baddest terrorist" in the world, is responsible for the Sept. 11 massacre on America — and Bush takes a "hands off" approach? Is he insane or just a blatant liar? WHY DID HE INVADE IRAQ, A SOVEREIGN NATION? Bin Laden was never in Iraq. It makes no sense. Sometimes I think Bush is actually working against America. Maybe he's a double agent and he's really a Muslim extremist in disguise! He seems to do everything to destroy us, and ruin our good name in the world. And he has no moral compass; he does not abide by principle. If we torture we are no better than the heathen and barbarians. And breaking the Geneva convention will only put our own soldiers at risk... an eye-for-an eye anyone?
The reason we are the greatest country in the world is BECAUSE of our moral integrity, our freedom of religion and speech, our democratic values, and our MORAL HIGH GROUND, BASED ON JUDEO-CHRISTIAN ideals, which would never, ever, ever allow torturing a prisoner of war.
Anyone who thinks it's okay to concentrate power in one branch of government or to spy on citizens or torture prisoners in secret prisons is not pro-American and is ruled by fear.
What parent, when their child expresses a fear of ghosts, says: "Yes you should be very afraid of ghosts?" A good, strong parent dismisses fear as "there is nothing to fear but fear itself." This government has exploited American's fears in order to gain power and control. WE NOW HAVE PROOF OF THIS. The mere fact that Bush will not make a deal to get Bin Laden, and will not protect our borders, is enough evidence that he is not really interested in anything but fear-mongering for political gain.

If degradation, humiliation, physical and mental brutalization of prisoners is decriminalized or considered permissible under a restrictive interpretation of Common Article 3, we will forfeit all credible objections should such barbaric practices be inflicted upon American prisoners.
This is not just a theoretical concern. We have people deployed right now in theaters where Common Article 3 is the only source of legal protection should they be captured. If we allow that standard to be eroded, we put their safety at greater risk.
Our servicemen and women have operated for too long with unclear and unlawful guidance on detainee treatment, and some have been left to take the blame when things went wrong. The guidance is now clear.
Moreover, were we to take this step, we would be viewed by the rest of the world as having
formally renounced the clear strictures of the Geneva Conventions. Our enemies would be
encouraged to interpret the Conventions in their own way as well, placing our troops in jeopardy in
future conflicts. And American moral authority in the war would be further damaged....
As the United States has greater exposure militarily than any other nation, we have long emphasized the reciprocal nature of the Geneva Conventions. That is why we believe – and the United States has always asserted -- that a broad interpretation of Common Article 3 is vital to the safety of U.S. personnel. But the Administration’s bill would put us on the opposite side of that argument. We urge you to consider the impact that redefining Common Article 3 would have on Americans who put their lives at risk in defense of our Nation. REAL MEN DON'T FIGHT * THE PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT
Open Thread. As the young Buddha discovered, along with every great spiritual thinker — the path to enlightenment is the middle. The extreme fringes should not be allowed to dominate politics or world affairs.
From my sister Kathryn: "God bless Ann Richards. She brought so much joy and humor to rough and tumble Texas politics. A true-blue Texas "yellow dog" Democrat (and a patriot.) The LA Times Obit says that in her autobiography she said that her parents put more stock in personality than scholarship. "I learned early on that people liked you if you told stories, if you made them laugh." So true - and she exemplified that with her jovial good spirit and friendliness."
I ran into her years ago with two of her close Texas inner circle friends at a movie theater in Santa Monica, and I went right up to her to say hello as if she were an old friend - said I was from Austin and had of course voted for her and I appreciated everything she represents - really gushed like a fan - and she was charming and friendly and cracked some kind of little joke and was very sweet."
One of the great luminaries - may her light shine on in life and politics forever.
Just heard a caller on Ed Schultz today say "Cheney and the Bush administration prides itself on being strong and wrong." STRONG AND WRONG: the new conservative trademark.
My heart goes out to Ann Nicole Smith. Maybe it's because I have sons, but I am heartbroken over the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith's beautiful 20-year-old son, Daniel Wayne Smith. I found myself sobbing over this, though I have no particular affinity for Ms. Smith (just a lot of sympathy and compassion.) God Bless Daniel's soul and God bless his mother, who just gave birth to a healthy baby girl three days before the death of her firstborn. No mother ever should suffer losing a child.

From my sister Kathryn: "God bless Ann Richards. She brought so much joy and humor to rough and tumble Texas politics. A true-blue Texas "yellow dog" Democrat (and a patriot.) The LA Times Obit says that in her autobiography she said that her parents put more stock in personality than scholarship. "I learned early on that people liked you if you told stories, if you made them laugh." So true - and she exemplified that with her jovial good spirit and friendliness."
I ran into her years ago with two of her close Texas inner circle friends at a movie theater in Santa Monica, and I went right up to her to say hello as if she were an old friend - said I was from Austin and had of course voted for her and I appreciated everything she represents - really gushed like a fan - and she was charming and friendly and cracked some kind of little joke and was very sweet."
One of the great luminaries - may her light shine on in life and politics forever.
Just heard a caller on Ed Schultz today say "Cheney and the Bush administration prides itself on being strong and wrong." STRONG AND WRONG: the new conservative trademark.
My heart goes out to Ann Nicole Smith. Maybe it's because I have sons, but I am heartbroken over the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith's beautiful 20-year-old son, Daniel Wayne Smith. I found myself sobbing over this, though I have no particular affinity for Ms. Smith (just a lot of sympathy and compassion.) God Bless Daniel's soul and God bless his mother, who just gave birth to a healthy baby girl three days before the death of her firstborn. No mother ever should suffer losing a child.

Bush Now Says What He Wouldn’t Say Before War: Iraq Had ‘Nothing’ To Do With 9/11
President Bush was in the midst of explaining how the attacks of 9/11 inspired his “freedom agenda” and the attacks on Iraq until a reporter, Ken Herman of Cox News, interrupted to ask what Iraq had to do with 9/11. “Nothing,” Bush defiantly answered - (Think Progress)
Like many mothers, I have an internal protective instinct and compassion for children everywhere. The minute George Bush declared an urgent need to invade Iraq, I knew in my bones this was a corrupt, sinister and anti-Christian decision. America NEVER starts a war or chooses war, by the way. And Christ commanded us to bless those who persecute us. Now an ASTOUNDING DISCLOSURE: Bush finally admitted the truth — that there were NO ties between Sadaam Hussein and 9/11, and NO ties between Sadaam and Al Queda! Why are they suddenly telling the truth now? And Cheney quietly admitted th truth on a sunday news program yesterday, that there were no WMD. So why did we invade Iraq to the tune of 300 billion dollars, 3,000 U.S. troops dead, 20,000 troops without legs and arms, and countless innocent Iraqi children dead? How can America justify this slaughter? Wouldn't our dollars and deaths be better spent hunting down Al Queda? Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, opium production is rampant and the Taliban is back in full force.
Tuesday night I had the honor of meeting both John Dean and Gore Vidal at a C-Span and Progressive Democrats event at the home of Teddi Windograd, mother of Marci Winograd. Dean's new book "Conservatives Without Conscience" is riveting, and delineates the exact same type of malicious, amoral smear-tactics and personal threats he and his wife Mo received from neo-conservatives that I have received. I will do an extensive article soon about this amazing evening.
9/7/06: REGARDING SLANDER, SMEAR AND THREATS I'VE BEEN RECEIVING: I wrote this letter to Joseph Cannon yesterday regarding the malicious attacks we've received. He posted an article about it here: CANNONFIRE threats-against-lydia-cornell
"Dear Joseph, Thank you for your support in bringing this serious issue to attention. This is how they operate and it's shocking to Democrats because we do not view our fellow man as a stepping stone to power.... There are things I haven't told anyone that have happened to us, which would chill you to the bone."
These people are are a far cry from good conservatives like Barry Goldwater and others we used to know. No peacemaking Progressives treat their fellow man this way — with personal destruction, virulent attacks and death threats. Why do certain extremist conservatives engage in such hateful tactics? How can they call themselves Christian?! I never believed people could really be like this. How sad for America.
DO NOT BELIEVE ABC's FAKE 911 upcoming "docudrama." It is a fabrication and a LIE. ABC's new mini-series "The Path to 9/11" grossly misrepresents his pursuit of Osama bin Laden - and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Ex-White House anti-terror adviser Richard Clarke and President Bill Clinton are demanding the network "pull the drama" if changes aren't made.
OSAMA BIN LAUGHIN' too. From Cannonfire: Bush vowed vengeance against Osama Bin Laden and any nation which harbored him. Pakistan has announced (according to ABC News) that the leader of Al Qaeda "will not face capture in Pakistan if he agrees to lead a 'peaceful life.'" Pakistan also harbors A.Q. Khan, nuke-seller to terrorists.
Yet Bush continues to treat Pakistan as an ally, and even gives that nation aid! And ABC is airing a deceit-filled docudrama which accuses Bill Clinton of being soft on Bin Laden!
Where in the world is OSAMA? The news won't cover it, but Bush APPEASED HIM MONTHS AGO BY GIVING UP OUR MAIN SAUDI BASES. AND NOW OSAMA IS IN PAKISTAN, enjoying spa treatments and caviar. Bush has negotiated with a terrorist, not just any terrorist, but the "worst" terrorist — by letting him live a peaceful life. Bush is now bringing out his fake "terrorist" fear-based news, appearing to be the savior, right before the election. It will backfire.
Received a letter from U.S. Army Officer, 1LT Marcus Byrne stationed in Iraq. Please read his letter in prior blog below. And please send him and his troops a care package. We must hold these guys in our prayers and send them lots of chocolate! They are fighting for THEIR lives...God Bless them.
