About Lydia Cornell

Award-winning actress, author, teen mentor, talk show host, comedienne and public speaker, Lydia Cornell grew up in America’s living rooms. An international celebrity best known for her starring role as the daughter of TV legend Ted Knight (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Caddyshack) in the hit ABC series Too Close for Comfort, Cornell was one of the most popular sex symbols of the 80’s, playing virginal blonde bombshell cheerleader Sara Rush. The series airs daily on Tribune Broadcasting’s new channel Antenna TV.

Charity Work

This year Lydia has worked with the Red Cross, Firefighters, Autism Awareness, and High Hopes — Pat Boone’s charity for traumatic spinal cord injury. She recently hosted a documentary for Safe Passage Home, an organization that gives extreme life makeovers to victims of domestic violence, for viewing on Oxygen network. Last fall she housed domestic abuse victims and cared for their children throughout the school year. With the help of the police, Cornell helped rescue a battered woman from a predator.
A mother of boys, she is stil raising teenagers (and their girlfriends, who confide in her about the most horrifying things, on a daily basis.) “At one time I had three boys and two dogs, including my husband, and they were all going through puberty. Then my husband left me for Gene Simmons. He went on the road with KISS. But so much comedy material came out of our marriage. And instead of holding onto the hurt, I choose to see it as a an a suspenseful adventure. Only the good remains in a broken relationship. The love doesn't go away.” She also did charity events with L.A. Team Mentoring (after school programs for underprivileged kids) and is developing a site for troubled teens called “The Answer Room.
 Triumph over Tragedy

Lydia Cornell is a women and children’s advocate, and an inspirational speaker on teen suicide prevention, domestic violence, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease) — as well as on drug, alcohol and Adderall[1] abuse.
"Raising a child with brittle bone disease has been one of the most precious gifts of my life!" she says of her wonderful stepson.

Lydia endured a shattering personal tragedy when she found her younger brother’s body after a drug overdose. Sober now for 17 years, she speaks to recovery groups of up to 300 or more. She has done over 170 speaking engagements. Her talks are laced with poignant stories of transformation with an innate sense of humor and comic timing.

She spoke at Texas A&M for Domestic Violence Prevention KTAL 6 and has hosted two documentaries for Safe Passage Home.org — an organization that gives extreme life makeovers to victims of domestic abuse — which will be shown on Oxygen network. Last fall she housed several abuse victims and cared for their children throughout the school year. With the help of the police, Cornell helped rescue a battered woman, Cheri Hall Cramer, from a predator. The woman had been hit in the head with the claw-end of a hammer and left for dead. After recovering from a brain aneurysm, she is finally getting her life back on track. But because of her injuries, she was left destitute and literally "thrown away" by her husband, who has made it impossible for her to ever visit her children again. All she wants is to see her precious children, whom she has not seen in years. Justice must prevail.
Cornell speaks at high schools, hospitals, and women’s centers on overcoming grief, unemployment, sexism, ageism, depression, self-sabotage, obnoxious teenagers — and every imaginable hardship. Her talks are laced with poignant stories of transformation with an innate sense of comic timing. “If you can laugh at yourself you probably won’t kill yourself.”
Cornell’s triumph over tragedy, depression and addiction was the result of a ‘catastrophic spiritual awakening.’ “There is a reason so many celebrities are in rehab these days,” she says. Her experiences in overcoming a string of failures and humiliations inspired her to assist others with their own demons.
A mother of boys, she has been raising teenagers (and their girlfriends, who confide in her about the most troulesome things, on a daily basis.) “I have three boys and two dogs, including my husband, and they’re all going through puberty.” She also is a teen mentor and has a site for troubled teens called “The Answer Room.” She had an epiphany: ”Teenagers are not nice people,” she jokes. “But I think the Universe makes them into jerks so we don’t miss them so much when they’re gone! Or when they’re finally old enough to leave home.”

Best Actress nominee for AFI and Method Fest, People's Choice Award winner, and star of over 250 TV shows and films and episodes worldwide, Lydia Cornell was recently on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm; The Kelsey Grammer Comedy Hour; Variety’s Power of Comedy honoring Russell Brand; and movies with Robert Downey, Jr., Steven Tyler, Jon Bon Jovi, and The Mentalist’s Amanda Rhigetti. "you, sorority girl.

Just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth, there's some things you should know, and one of them is, there's absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world.

We're 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, number 4 in labor force, and number 4 in exports.

We lead the world in only 3 categories....number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined.....,..25 of whom are allies.

Now, none of this is the fault of a 20 year old College student.

But you, nonetheless, are without a doubt a member of the worst,... period...,... generation,... period ever,...period.

So when you ask, "what makes us the greatest country in the world?" .....,..I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.....

    ".....we sure used to be.

We stood up for what was right.

    We fought for moral reasons.

We passed laws, struck down laws for moral reasons.

We waged wars on poverty, not poor people.

We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors. We put our money where our mouths were.

And we never beat our chest.

We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and we cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy.

We reached for the stars,...we acted like men.

We aspired to intelligence, we didn't belittle it, it didn't make us feel inferior.

We didn't identify by who we voted for in our last election.

And we didn't... we didn't scare so easily.

We were able to be all these things, and to do all these things, because we were informed....by great men,... men who were revered.

First step in solving any problem, is recognizing there is one.

America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.....

    ...enough?"

Here's the problem with the "cheap shot" politics candidates are obsessed with today.

These "negative attack ads" the candidates launch not only make the candidate launching them look bad, they often make them look stupid and dishonest.

Case in point? The Obama campaigns current attacks on Mitt Romney for "outsourcing jobs to China".

Turns out, Factcheck.org has debunked this as not credible, at least with regards to Romney himself.

Yet the Obama campaign is still launching them.

Same thing of course in the Romney camp, when they're busy attacking Obama for the same type of medical program he himself created in Massachusetts when he was governor.

Maybe its time to stop the negative campaigns telling us how much we need to fear the other guy, and start telling us why we should want to vote for you.

If you're worth voting for, you should be able to tell us why.

Fear mongering and attack ads make the candidates and our country look petty, ugly and downright stupid.

Heat Wave Causes U.S. Airways Plane To Get Stuck In Tarmac At Reagan National Airport (PHOTO)

The Huffington Post | By Timothy Stenovec

    Posted: 07/08/2012 2:34 pm Updated: 07/08/2012 2:49 pm

A U.S. Airways flight at Reagan National Airport bound for Charleston, S.C. was delayed on Friday after it got stuck in a soft spot on the tarmac, apparently caused by extremely high temperatures, the The Washington Post reports.

According to Michelle Mohr, a U.S. Airways spokesperson, the 50-seat regional jet got stuck when the electric tug cart was unable to push it from the gate because the jet's wheels had sunk into the tarmac.

In an effort to reduce the weight of the plane and free it, the luggage was unloaded and the 35 passengers and 3 crew members deplaned, Mohr said. But that still didn't work, and it wasn't until crews brought in a cart normally used on a much larger aircraft that the plane was freed and able to get on its way.

The flight was delayed for about three hours.

A photo posted to the social news site Reddit that is purported to show the plane's wheels sunken has been viewed nearly 850,000 times. Mohr confirmed to The Huffington Post that the aircraft's registration number in the picture matches the airline that got stuck on Friday.

Mohr told HuffPost that in her more than six years with U.S. Airways, this is the first time she's heard of something like this happening.

"It was a pretty unusual event," she said, "but we're looking at some pretty unusual temperatures."

Indeed, Bloomberg reports that more than 2,400 high-temperature records were broken in the U.S. over the past 11 days.

D.C. Metro Derailment: Excessive Heat To Blame

    07/07/2012 5:36 pm Updated: 07/07/2012 11:44 pm

Why did three Metro cars derail during rush hour on Friday?

    Excessive heat.

On Saturday, the tenth day in a row with temperatures over 95 degrees in the D.C. area, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority released a statement saying that investigators think this summer's heatwave likely caused a "heat kink" in the tracks, which in turn caused the derailment:

Warmest Half Year On Record For U.S. Mainland, NOAA 'State Of The Climate' Reports

The Huffington Post | By Joanna Zelman Posted: 07/09/2012 4:10 pm Updated: 07/09/2012 4:18 pm

Yes, it really is getting hot out there. A new report finds that the past 12 months have been the warmest on record for the mainland United States.

According to the NOAA National Climatic Data Center's "State of the Climate: National Overview for June 2012" report released Monday, the 12-month period from July 2011 to June 2012 was the warmest on record (since recordkeeping began in 1895) for the contiguous United States, with a nationally-averaged temperature of 56.0 degrees, 3.2 degrees higher than the long-term average.

According to the report, every single state in the contiguous U.S. except for Washington saw warmer-than-average temperatures during this time period. The period from January to June of this year also has been the warmest first half of a year on record for the U.S. mainland.

The right wing tea party types however are saying their usual lame mindless tripe like "if you don't think America's the greatest country in the world then leave it!".

Usual mindless tripe because these types don't want to work across the aisle. They don't want compromise as we see in here.

All they want is everything "their way", and if they can't have it they'll tear it all down rather than compromise.

    That's the problem.

Getting the moderates and reasonable people on both sides to come together, is going to be the answer.

  15. NOAA links extreme weather to climate change

On Tuesday, for the first time, government scientists are saying recent extreme weather events are likely connected to man-made climate change. It's the conclusion of a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The report says last year's record drought in Texas was made "
roughly 20 times more likely" because of man-made climate change, specifically meaning warming that comes from greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide. The study, requested by NOAA, looked at 50 years of weather data in Texas and concluded that man-made warming had to be a factor in the drought.

The head of NOAA's climate office, Tom Karl, said: "What we're seeing, not only in Texas but in other phenomena in other parts of the world, where we can't explain these events by natural variability alone. They're just too rare, too uncommon."

Aside from the Texas drought, NOAA called the entire year of 2011 the year of extreme weather events, starting in Joplin, Missouri.

-January to June 2012 warmest first half of any year on record

-Drought reaches record 56 percent of continental U.S. …

NOAA made a point of saying in their study that the climate change they've identified is man-made.

Going back 50 years, they know what temperature and dryness conditions are associated with Texas drought. When they put that in the computer, nothing explained the intensity and duration of what we saw last year in Texas until they factored in the added heat coming from climate change.

You're going to see a lot of scientists criticizing this as a guess, but NOAA for the first time is arguing that this is science.

U.S. declares drought-stricken states largest natural disaster area ever

    By Dylan Stableford,

Yahoo! News | The Lookout – 3 hrs ago

The United States Department of Agriculture has declared natural disaster areas in more than 1,000 counties and 26 drought-stricken states, making it the largest natural disaster in America ever.

The declaration—which covers roughly half of the country—gives farmers and ranchers devastated by drought access to federal aid, including low-interest emergency loans.

"Agriculture remains a bright spot in our nation's economy," U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday while announcing the assistance program. "We need to be cognizant of the fact that drought and weather conditions have severely impacted farmers around the country."

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than half the country (56 percent) experienced drought conditions—the largest percentage in the 12-year history of the service. And according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the period from January through June was "the warmest first half of any year on record for the contiguous United States."

  20. From voltron's own link;

The longer answer is that it will go down in history as one of the hottest and longest-lasting early summer heat waves in U.S. history, and by at least one measure, it was the record setter in every sense of the phrase.

It was also a clear taste of what’s to come as the climate continues to warm due to manmade global warming.

    (snip)

One thing I’m curious about is whether the atmospheric conditions that led to this heat wave were as unusual as what took place during past hot summers. We already know from studies that global warming makes it more likely that heat extremes will occur.

Given the background warming that has already taken place in the U.S. and elsewhere, it’s reasonable to think that while a record-breaking heat wave used to require a massive, unusually powerful dome of high pressure in order to occur, now the same record could be set with a weaker weather system.

Damn are you making this easy voltron.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So unlike the earlier records, a much less powerful high pressure dome created the record high temps.

This doesn't bode well if we get a record high pressure dome like the 30's record temps were created under .... cause then we would be faced with even higher temps which would cause much more damage and weather related problems,

I guess voltron doesn't understand this.

You know clif, I've got me an idea.

We could probably defeat global warming if we could just get all these tin foil hat wearing nut cases to go outside whenever the suns shining, all wearing their finest tin foil noggin crowns of course.

This I think might reflect enough sunlight back into the atmosphere as to penetrate the CO2 blanket thus helping to cool the planet.

    :)

    So whadda ya think?

    Am I onto something here?

Yes, they want to get everyone driving electric cars, ....that way they can more easily disseminate their secret goverment mind waves to the population, ....turning us all into communistic zombies, simply by using the electrical fields generated by everyday traffic.

You know...you tin foil loonies might be onto something there.

In fact I think I saw something about that recently in a trustworthy publication.....the "National Enquirer".

    Or was it "The Globe"?

...say....you wouldn't happen to have a spare one of those shiny caps on you by any chance, would you?...

Guess it can't hurt to play it safe, huh?

  38. Well you know Worfy, they've already established that the government can tell private citizens what they MUST buy. And of course they'll have to regulate all of our actions in the interest of stopping climate change...

Oh and the National Enquirer? Didn't they break the John Edwards baby daddy story? And if I remember correctly they and Drudge both lead on the Monica Lewinsky story.

And there you have it folks.....straight from the horses mouth....

....or at least one part of its anatomy....

Mister Reynolds Wrap noodle himself, like the rest of his Tea Party loonies....gets their science from not politicians as I'd originally surmised....no sir.

They get it, ...from the National Enquirer.

But considering they also routinely run stories like "Elvis is alive and living in a secret alien built bunker under the White House" and "Monkey boy fathers piglet twins", ....I'd be a little hesitant to base any scientific conclusions on it.

As for my being "bat boy", coming from a tin foil hat wearing pansy who thinks NASA is less credible than the National Enquirer....well.....I'll take that as a compliment.

When I start appearing normal to tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theory kooks like you....that's when I'll start to worry.
