RESCUE-BAILOUT BILL PASSES BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS. Our hang up is that it doesn't contain provisions to put money back in the pockets of the foreclosed-upon homeowners or people who lost money in their 401-Ks. But we are forgetting that it is only an emergency "stop-the-bleeding" measure. We will pass a new bill to take care of the middle class and taxpayers. We will do it as we go along. This is a living, breathing, elastic bill -- and everything is not contained in it. The "pork" will actually help the American small businesses that have been hurting, and this includes plaintiffs who were owed money from the Exxon Valdez spill.

PALIN: I WANT TO EXPAND THE POWERS OF THE VICE PRESIDENCY!

BIDEN-PALIN DEBATE gaffes and quick takes from HuffPo:

First, my take: This is the best debate of Biden's life and when he got choked up, it was the most honest, pure moment. Everyone went through the roof rating him as the highest score possible on that point. Nothing is more compelling than a strong man who is in touch with his feelings. It was natural and makes me trust him. I do not trust men who cannot be touched and vulnerable. I am so sick of loud-mouth posturing and ego-driven people.

The worst thing Palin did was in NOT expressing empathy for Joe Biden when he mentioned the loss of his wife and daughter. Palin's eye-winks and hickish, corny Joe six-pack dialect in which she dropped all her "gs," was condescending, offensive and dumb-sounding. She has lowered the standard for women. She sounded gimmicky and robotic with her memorized her Republican talking points and didn't show any nuanced judgment. She didn't directly answer the questions either!

You can tell who is the real public servant. Not the one who is ambitious for all the wrong reasons. So having 5 children and running Alaska isn't enough? Does she really think she has anything to offer the world by being Vice President?

Biden hit home hard and really slammed McCain. Biden connected with the American people and was dignified and perfect with his facts.

AND FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONED - BIDEN MENTIONED- THAT McCAIN VOTED AGAINST LOW INCOME CHILDREN'S HEALTH CARE!! Although he didn't put it in the firm way I put it. If the public heard it said this way, they'd be horrified at McCain.

From HuffPo:

10:35 - Sam Stein: An Obama aide summarizes the night's proceeding as such: Palin did a good job, as expected, but Biden was the star of the evening, hitting the right tones, coming off passionate and informed and not seeming demeaning in the slightest to his combatant.

Moreover, he adds, when you look back at the tape there was little to any substance in Palin's answers.

"She could not articulate one place where her ticket differs from Bush," he writes.

10:25 - Jason Linkins: Interesting Dial Line standard: Focus group approves of Biden defending Obama, but they aren't impressed with Palin talking up McCain. People want to hear Palin be Palin! Not interested in her running a P.R. game for McCain.

10:23 - Sam Stein: Biden gets choked up when talking about the struggles of American families and the trials he himself went through when his wife and young daughter were killed in a car accident.

"The notion that somehow because I am a man I don't know how to raise two kids on my own," he says, "I know what its like to raise a child where you are not sure he's going to make it."

At one point he had to hold back tears, take a breath and compose himself.

On the CNN dials of undecided voters in Ohio, both men and women rate the moment as high as possible.

10:20 - Sam Stein: Not sure if Palin wants to come to Dick Cheney's defense on anything, let alone the carte blanche political powers he has pursued while in office. Asked if she agreed with his interpretation that the VP is part of the legislative branch, she basically says yes.

"I do agree with him that we have a lot of flexibility in there and we will do what we have to do to administer appropriately the plans we have for this nation."

Biden tees off, starting with the blanket statement: "Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous VP we have had in history."

Uncommitted voters in Ohio absolutely love Biden's response.

10:17 - Jason Linkins: Palin seems to think that the Constitution allows the Vice President to "flex" between the Executive and the Legislative Branch! GAFFE.

BIDEN: “Vice-President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice-president we’ve had probably in American history.’’

Hardblogger msnbc Some comments from regular American people:

As a Republican I really worked hard to like Gov. Palin but this debate has convinced me to vote for Obama-Biden. Palin blew the her pseudo-genuine image on national TV by not even acknowedging Biden when he choked up while speaking of the traumatic death of a family member. Little cracks like this will continue to develop.
Rebecca Russell (Sent Friday, October 03, 2008 12:23 AM)

Watched the "debate" with my husband who is a McCain supporter. We agreed to offer no comments while it was on. After about 25 minutes, he muttered, "I can't take it any more," and left. I stayed through it all and all I could think of was, she really IS a post turtle. You drive down a country road and see a turtle on a post; you know it didn't get there by itself; it doesn't belong up there; it doesn't know what to do now that it's there; and you wonder about the guy who put it there.
Jan Lightner, Federal Way, WA (Sent Friday, October 03, 2008 12:23 AM)

I wish I had thought of Sarah Palin's strategy when I was in high school debate class--just cheat--don't answer the questions. If Gwen didn't have any authority to check that sort of gambit, why not just let both participants do a 45 minute stump speech.
Biden won and I'm a registered Republican.
Ann Turner, Oldsmar, FL (Sent Thursday, October 02, 2008 11:53 PM)

I was frightened by Palin's obvious memorization of set answers to questions she was going to answer whether they were asked or not. I was insulted by her "winking" at the camera so much and her "vacant" smile. What in the world would we be saying if Biden had done that. I was stunned by her inability to really hear Biden when he mentioned HIS FAMILY experience. She seems mean to me and actually sneered at a dignified senator. I was mad that she so easily will lie and I was disgusted that she wants to expand Cheney's role as veep. We are in a lot of trouble if this ticket wins.

I think Biden was clear, passionate and gracious to her. She did not deserve his good manners in retrospect. Eleanor Herndon, Greensboro, NC

How did this play out for the average American voter? I found Governor Palin to be condescending, over-prepared and downright obnoxious from start to finish. While I am sure some will go for the wide smile, winks and sarcasm, I just want her and Senator McCain to know that some of us, in fact, many of us Republican and Democrats alike, are looking for answers...real concrete solutions to the situations we are facing. Style over substance won't cut it this time around.

As a Republican and a woman, I deeply offended by the notion that this is the best we have to offer ...at this point, I say this for the whole ticket. McCain's lack of judgment in choosing Palin (clearly for political gain only) shows that he does not care one iota about putting the "country first".
I have been loyal to this party for as long as I can stand. I hung in there with our President despite the direction of the country and our weakening position globally. I am now at a crossroad where I need to decide should I continue to support McCain in his arrogance and apparent lack of integrity OR do I tow the line and cast my vote despite all that's happened since the RNC, the last 2 weeks of gaffes with Mrs. Palin in particular, and now this over-rehearsed dinner theatre performance tonight. And people wonder why there are so many undecideds...
Karen, Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 03, 2008 12:05 AM)

Although I am not a fan of Governor Palin, I was starting to feel sorry for her this past week.....BUT tonight got me off that train. It is frightening to think that there is a possibility of her becoming President. I thought she was disrespectful of Joe Biden and of Gwen by stating that she would not answer the questions the way the moderator wanted. She definitely was just reciting what has been pounded in her head in preparation. There is no way some of the words and thoughts that she spoke were her own. I am tired of her "cutesy" ways and the fact that she stated that she would like the VP to have more power really turned me off.
Betty Jo Soldano, Jamestown, NY (Sent Thursday, October 02, 2008 11:34 PM)

Sarah Palin was a frightening presence tonight. She was overbearing, frenetic, and grabbing for a power grab with her chilling remarks about disregarding the moderator and expanding the role of the Vice President. Her contentions about looking back are also frightening because wisdom says that those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

Judge: 'Troopergate' probe against Palin can continue

Alaska lawmakers can continue investigating whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power in firing a state public safety commissioner who refused to fire her former brother-in-law, a judge ruled Thursday.

    Bloomberg News reports:

In his ruling yesterday, issued minutes before the start of the vice-presidential debate, Alaska state court Judge Peter Michalski said the Alaska Legislative Council can move ahead with its investigation, including having the state Senate Judiciary Committee subpoena Palin aides to testify.

"It is legitimately within the scope of the Legislature's investigatory power to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the termination of a public officer," Michalski wrote in his ruling.

Republicans in Alaska had sought to end the probe, arguing that it has become infected with politics. Republican presidential nominee John McCain tapped Palin to be his running mate.

The judge's decision on the probe came just a few hours before Thursday night's debate between Palin and Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden. The trooper-firing investigation was not mentioned during the debate.

The probe began before Palin's rise to the national stage. State lawmakers hired an investigator to determine whether Palin acted improperly in allegedly pressuring Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire her brother in law and then firing Monegan when he refused to comply. The governor's office says budget disputes led to Monegan's firing.

The Associated Press has more on the investigation.

The independent investigator, retired prosecutor Steven Branchflower, now can conclude the probe and report his findings by Oct. 10. Branchflower has not interviewed Palin's husband Todd and several top aides who have refused to appear under subpoena. It was not immediately clear whether they now would testify.

It remains to be seen whether the investigation's findings will turn into this year's "October surprise" in the presidential campaign.

The twit and her inbred redneck bozo of a husband need to think what the frick they are gonna do come the middle of November and the Alaskan legislature is still looking into this criminal activity and the broken reich wing ain't gonna come to their rescue ..... cause not only will she LOSE big time, but she could also find this investigation sends her packin' permanently to Wasilla without gouging the Alaskans for payouts cause she is OFF the dole there.

But she is so clueless she don't thunk she is gonna lose big time in both cases.

  2. Remember even using the website the reich wing trolls were trumpeting a months ago this is turning into a landslide;

RealClearPolitics Electoral College (No Toss up states)

    Obama/Biden 353 McCain/Palin 185

    Which is better then;

    Nixon did in 1968,

    Carter did in 1976,

Or Bush id in either 2000, or 2004.

They are close to what Clinton did in 1992 defeating Bush Sr ... or 1996 defeating Dole.

Looks like come November wing-nuts head will be explodin' again.

  3. Ok, I need to give my thoughts on the debate.

I thought Palin did an ok job -- not great mind you but certainly better than I expected her to. I'm not saying that she won -- didnt even come close -- but she did the job she neeeded to do.

Biden was great. He answered the questions, defined what the Constitution says about the Vice Presidency, didnt try to change who he is.

That brings me to the moment where he choked up. As a dad who has been at a hospital bedside while being told that your son is dying (which, thank God he didnt) I certainly understand and can relate to Biden getting choked up. I still do and it's been close to 13 years since then. I thought he recovered VERY well -- certainly not "standing there BLUBBERING". I know the right wing pundits are going to have a field day with that but so be it -- Biden is a loving father and there is no shame in that.

2+2 does equal 4, but thats not what I asked you.

She did this all through the debate, which made her look smart to stupid people, who don't listen to the questions or review the answers because they're stupid. They just want to see her say "some smurt stuff" and they're happy. Just let her say a few fancy words about anything while looking the camera in the eye and walla. She's a hero.

But she said nothing all night. Nothing of substance. Half of what she said was untrue, the other half was just empty rhetoric about nothing.

And she just never answered any questions, which shows she's an empty vessel. Nothing more."

This post summarizes the debate perfectly.................she didnt answer half the questions, she lied and babbled Reich Wing nonsense and canned pre packaged talking points that much of the time had nothing to do with addressing the question and she said Cheney's power grabs and attempts to stifle and circumvent oversite and checks and balances were a good thing.............she didnt do as BAD as most people expected or like she did in previous interviews but ONLY a certafiable Moron could say she did "GOOD" with a strait face or say she actually belonged on the same stage as Biden............Biden is way out of her league and it CLEARLY SHOWED!

    What dial?

I understand you don't like men who don't like weepy men, but the fact is most American men don't like seeing other men cry except at the right moment.

This was a national debate about affairs of state.

    Not a love in.

I'm sorry I can't concur with you but I'm glad Bidens crying didn't seem to hurt him any but if I had been his handler I've had told him not to do it.

There is a time and a place for everything and when the country is in crisis and war is looming on the horizon the last thing MOST men want to see is their candidate standing on a national stage crying about something that happened a long time ago.

  14. Biden was afraid of her last night. She is a rube, and he let her off the hook so many times.

When she accused him of being “for things before he’s against him”, he should have said “you mean like that bridge to nowhere you were for before you were against?”.

And I would have asked how the American people are supposed to trust her to uphold the laws when she won’t even submit to the laws of her own state and cooperate with an investigation?

This woman is a joke. A sick, twisted fanatical corrupt joke. And its an INSULT to me, and every American that she’s being suggested to rule over me, and 300 million other Americans for the next 4 years

  15. For example, when Biden spoke of the commanding general in Afghanistan, Palin tried to counteract the critics by stating the generals name for Biden, not once, but twice.

Problem was, she gave the wrong name each time.

Biden was referring to General David McKiernan.

But she referred to him as General “McClellan”.

As she did this, she put her smug little “holier than thou” face on, and smirked as if she was educating Biden on something, yet all the while, she really looked like an idiot to anyone who knew the name she was proudly announcing as if to educate Biden, was wrong.

Biden didn’t correct her there. He should have. That one correction would have shifted the debate and put her on the ropes.

All he had to do was look at her and say, “I’m not familar with General McClellan in Afghanistan, could you possibly be referring to General David McKiernan?”

That would have not been “bullying”, but it would have been the turning point of the debate. It would have reinforced the fact that Palin doesn’t know what she’s talking about and made Biden look like the smart elder statesman.

Palin is the E-PIT-O-MEE of a sorely underqualified undereducated right wing stooge.

She’s Monica Goodling all over again, only this time she wants to rule the world. She’s stupid, and thus she’s dangerous, and we deserve better than that.

  17. Bart, I concur with all your points I ALSO would have liked to see Biden capitalize on all the Openings Palin gave him just like Obama should have with McSame..............But I think in Biden;s case he was playing it safe he KNEW he had it won and he didnt want to appear mean or condescending and turn off independents kind of like a guy who is up a pawn in a chess game and instead of going for the spectacular win via a wild tactical combination plays it safe and takes it to a winning albeit boring endgame.

I think your right and Biden SHOULD HAVE corrected her about the generals name and several other LIES and inaccuracies but and he could have crushed her in a far more resounding fashion but the bottom line is he won clearly and decisively.

    ReplyDelete
  18. McSame is losing more and more each week............he's the one that NEEDS to win big to reverse the relentless stream of support to Obama and he didnt do that last week and Palin didnt do that last night.................I think Obama will be up double digits in the battleground states by next week.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also think he should have brought up how she can CLAIM to be for oversight and accounability when she is snubbing her nose at the laws and accountability of her own state by refusing to cooperate with the investigation and honor Supoenas just like GWB ands his criminal administration................there were so many openings he passed up he should have taken ..................many were him playing it safe and a few you miss when in the heat of a debate and realize you SHOULD have taken them.

If you're looking at it through rose colored glasses then yes, he won clearly and decisively.

But if you just look at the general take around the country on the web, like Yahoo, MSN, CNN, BBC, etc, you'll see they pretty much are calling it a wash.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm just not willing to make such statements Mike when the reality is it was a wash, with the tide maybe washing Bidens way more than hers.

Remember Americans don't base their decisions on facts and figures but on whether or not they'd like to have a beer with the candidate (which is so stupid it makes me want to move to Finland).

Biden was far more factually correct then she was in MOST cases. He did make a few gaffs, but not many.

But a "clear and decisive" win is one where ALL the papers and ALL the news outlets (cept for Fox, which is more of a news SPoutlet) are calling it clearly and decisively for one candidate over the other.

And a quick peruse of the news outlets out there shows mixed reviews at best.

They see it as a wash, with more credibility being given to Biden.

In avoiding catastrophe, she was aided by Biden, whose looping answers drifted along a current known only to him. His best friend was the clock.

These two candidates -- aided and abetted by the singularly inarticulate work of moderator Gwen Ifill -- combined to produce one of the worst debates in modern American presidential history.

  25. And I concur. Biden did "ok", but for the most part he wandered and meandered and failed to confron Palins inaccuracies. He wasn't there to debate John McCain. He was there to debate Sarah Palin.

And he let her walk on almost every issue while himself making speeches about Obama.

Palin didn't win, but neither did Biden. It was ultimately a wash, with the parties each calling it for their candidate.

  34. I think he won on substance and the issues but as a whole, he let way too many falsehoods by his opponent go unchallenged so taken as a whole, I must agree with the media and say for the most part, its a wash, with the tide in his favor.

So yes, he won, but not decisively.

In a debate you are supposed to refute your opponents positions and correct incorrect data that they present.

He failed to do that. Instead he made a lot of speeches and debated a candidate who wasn't there (McLoon).

So all in all to me it was a wash, but he did do better than Palin factually and in substance.

She was an empty vassal, and produced nothing but far right wing rhetoric and stump speeches and refused to answer almost any questions, so she did worse than he did in that respect.

But in pleasing Joe Sixpack (aka Joe Dumbass) she scored big. She came across as in control and smart, because these people are stupid and don't listen to what someones saying but instead pay attention to how they say it.

  36. To me he won on the issues and facts but only me, you and others who bother paying attention to the facts will ever know that.

People in this country we are learning, sadly, are stupid.

And they don't pay attention to the facts or issues, so when Palin starts talking seemingly coherent on a topic, even though that topic has nothing to do with the question at hand, to the stupid people in this country, which is most of them, she sounded smart.

    She said smart sounding stuff and to them it doesn't matter that;

    A. She doesn't know what she's talking about but instead reherasing lines they prepped her on

    B. What shes saying has nothing to do with the questions being asked.

Palins performance I'll liken to Clif Claven, from Cheers, who just starts rambling throwing in some real facts, mingled with conjecture and outright silliness, but when spoken in one, long drawn out sentence can "sound smart", thus drawing in the less erudite in his audience.

So when you think Sarah Palin, think Cliff Claven.

On that point, she failed miserably; there is, as the day goes on, almost an "awakening" of the realization that she didn't say a damned thing last night.

I caught it last night, as most of you did. The fact that she has changed almost no minds this much later does not bode well for her.

  41. Whats interesting is look at the heated discussions, nuanced positions and disagreement between the left on key issues while the Volksturm that supports and worships Palin goosesteps in moronic lockstep parroting the same robotic and dishonest Right wing talking points.

  42. I'm serious about Homer Simpson voting for Obama. In a recent episode of the Simpsons Homer went to vote and when he tried to vote for Obama the machine kept registering votes for McCain.

It was a striking endorsement of Obama, because of what the Simpsons represent to middle America.

Clearly the tides are shifting to Obama\Biden, which gives me some measure of relief. I just hope that when we go to vote we don't get screwed like Homer did.

  43. I think Obama is going to win this..............sure theres an aweful lot of stupid ignorant people but regardless when the economy turns bad its a natural reflex to throw out the bums that caused this and as stupid and ignorant as many are I dont think McSame is fooling ANYONE that he's not like GWB.

  44. People want change and despite McIdiot's and Palin's best effort to musddy the waters and pretend THEY are change I dont think America is buying their BS!

  46. Once Obama becomes President we NEED to limit the scope and power of Presidential Pardons so these idiots cant use it as a get out of jail free card and shield for treason and criminal activity and to obstruct justice......Then we need to make election fraud A mandatory 20 years to life sentence with NO PARDONS or reduced times then these idiots would think twice about committing election fraud if 20- life was guaranteed!

  47. Bart outside of cheating by the reich wing in ways they never thought of in 2000 or 2004, Obama is going to easily win this one.

Hell senate races are starting to break for the democrats like they did in 2006, Liddy Dole is falling behind in North Carolina and even Mitch McConnell is in the fight of his life.

The GOP has given up in New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia,

Seven more seats appear to be flipping to the democrats with three including McConnell's coming close. No democratic party held seats are in jeopardy.

Here is the projected house breakdown, Dem 237 GOP 182 with 16 too close to call, including my own congresscritter.

  50. I just read this quote from Palin’s Fox news Interview this morning with Carl Cameron. Asking about how she’d expand the Vice Presidential powers beyond what Cheney has done, Palin said the following;

“Well, again, as I tried to explain last night, our executive branch will know what our job is.

We have the three very distinct branches of government.

You know, we might be bleeding our authority over to the Legislative or Judicial branch to do our job in the Executive branch as administers.”

So apparently not only does Sarah Palin think the Vice President has more power in the Senate than he does, but she also now thinks that she somehow, has a role in the JUDICIARY!!!

    OMG

  52. Wingtards have always hated the Constitutional form of Government we;ve had. They've been trying to wreck it since the days of Aaron Burr.

Aaron Burr would definitely like the office of the VP as it exists today. Given what an idiot like Cheney has managed to do with it, can you imagine what Burr would have gotten done if HE had held that kind of power?

  54. Did you see Rachel Maddow take that woman from the McCain campaign apart?

Maddow was incredible. Finally someone has their facts and figures ready to go to counter bullshit from the right.

The McCain lady tried to sell several lies like McCain being a regulator. Maddow didn't let her go on that stuff and just blew her ass right out of the water.

I garuntee you they're afraid of Rachel Maddow. She's a surprise.

She's the one they didn't see coming. She's quiet but she's smart. Really, really smart. And when someone says somethig stupid like McCain drafted a bill that Chuck Hagel actually authored, Maddow corrects them.
