Talk Radio

SATURDAY MORNINGS TUNE IN LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS and LOS ANGELES to our show BASHAM AND CORNELL PROGRESSIVE TALK
from 9 - 10 a.m. We broadcast live -- or go to our website and click on the link to hear the entire show in the archives.

LISTEN TO YESTERDAY'S SHOW IN THE ARCHIVES: Yesterday, we had Paul Waldman from Media Matters on to discuss Bill O'Reilly's delusional rant accusing Media Matters of being a propaganda website funded by George Soros. This is hilarious, you have to hear it. Media Matters.org is a Washington think-tank whose sole purose is to correct deception, misinformation and hate-speak in the right-wing media. Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.

TALK RADIO by Larry Johnson

Talk radio has become a billion dollar business in America and the audience is growing with the influence of Internet Talk Radio to capture a growing block of the audience. More and more people are logging on to listen to talk radio over their computers and hand held devices.

Conservatives took the lead in talk radio with influences like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity dominating the airwaves with their abrasive tones slanted sharply to a conservative point of view. As these shows caught on other conservative shows hit the airwaves and helped push the Republican party into power.

Progressive talk shows came at a disadvantage as the conservative influence had long dominated the airwaves. As Air America came into existence and progressive talk shows began to gain an audience, politics in the U.S slowly started to turn.

Eight of the top ten talk radio shows are conservative programs that reach millions of listeners, who daily use their broadcasts to further the conservative agenda. Each week these and other talk radio pundits make outrageous claims that often prove untrue.

A new breed of progressive talk has recently hit the airwaves. Broadcasting from Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Doug Basham and Lydia Cornell host the Basham and Cornell Progressive Talk show every Saturday at 9:00 AM PST.

This Saturday on Basham and Cornell Progressive Talk they will interview Paul Waldman of Media Matters. The subject will be the recent outrageous remarks of Bill O'Reilly and other conservative claims that have been untrue.

Tune in Saturday at 9:00 AM PST for the fastest growing show in talk radio. bashamandcornell

Kucinich's problems go back to his days as Boy Mayor Of Cleveland. He ran a horrible administration and threw tantrums, to boot.

No one would seriously put him in charge of anything, based on that performance, even if he did some positive things, like maintain the power company as a public concern.

Utilities are too vital to privatize, and if you look at any place that has privatized them, rates have gone up (helllllo, Enron!), and while service and offerings have increased (hellllo, DSL), the value is way off when you factor in outages and other corrupt practices.

Well Larry thats all window dressing anyway because first of all there is not enough oil in EITHER place to make any kind of meaningful difference secondly it takes at least 5 years for any oil project to even START producing then usually another 10 or so years to reach peak production............by that time unless we are stupid we should have either diversified away from being SO heavily dependent on oil or actually migrated to another more renewable or plentiful source of energy...........if not we will be in severe trouble and our civilization and way of life as we know it will be over.

It will be over $4 REAL soon I paid $3.20 a gallon the other day and we are not even in peak summer driving season that usually causes a spike and there has not been a hurricaine or trouble in the Middle East yet to cause a real spike and we are ALLREADY getting close to $4 gas and oil is getting close to $70 also.

USA Sgt. Eddie Jeffers, USA (Iraq)
    February 1, 2007 URL: http://www.newmediajournal.us/guest/e_jeffers/02012007.htm
I stare out into the darkness from my post, and I watch the city burn to the ground. I smell the familiar smells, I walk through the familiar rubble, and I look at the frightened faces that watch me pass down the streets of their neighborhoods. My nerves hardly rest; my hands are steady on a device that has been given to me from my government for the purpose of taking the lives of others.

I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families again...and yet, I too, am just a boy....my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead. I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid...because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me from around street corners and windows, and it is always there.

There are the demons that follow me, and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own...but that are necessary for survival. I've made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world, who walk in the same streets...who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not.

And to think, I volunteered for this...

And I am ignorant to the rest of the world...or so I thought.

But even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi, Iraq, the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.

I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehans, and the Al Frankens, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word boys and girls, because that's what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantryman is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class.

People like Cindy Sheehan are ignorant. Not just to this war, but to the results of their idiotic ramblings, or at least I hope they are. They don't realize its effects on this war. In this war, there are no Geneva Conventions, no cease fires. Medics and Chaplains are not spared from the enemy's brutality because it's against the rules. I can only imagine the horrors a military Chaplain would experience at the hands of the enemy. The enemy slinks in the shadows and fights a coward’s war against us. It is effective though, as many men and women have died since the start of this war. And the memory of their service to America is tainted by the inconsiderate remarks on our nation's news outlets. And every day, the enemy changes...only now, the enemy is becoming something new. The enemy is transitioning from the Muslim extremists to Americans. The enemy is becoming the very people whom we defend with our lives. And they do not realize it. But in denouncing our actions, denouncing our leaders, denouncing the war we live and fight, they are isolating the military from society...and they are becoming our enemy.

Democrats and peace activists like to toss the word "quagmire" around and compare this war to Vietnam. In a way they are right, this war is becoming like Vietnam. Not the actual war, but in the isolation of country and military. America is not a nation at war; they are a nation with its military at war. Like it or not, we are here, some of us for our second, or third times; some even for their fourth and so on. Americans are so concerned now with politics, that it is interfering with our war.

Terrorists cut the heads off of American citizens on the internet...and there is no outrage, but an American soldier kills an Iraqi in the midst of battle, and there are investigations, and sometimes soldiers are even jailed...for doing their job.

It is absolutely sickening to me to think our country has come to this. Why are we so obsessed with the bad news? Why will people stop at nothing to be against this war, no matter how much evidence of the good we've done is thrown in their face? When is the last time CNN or MSNBC or CBS reported the opening of schools and hospitals in Iraq? Or the leaders of terror cells being detained or killed? It's all happening, but people will not let up their hatred of President Bush. They will ignore the good news, because it just might show people that Bush was right.

America has lost its will to fight. It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world. The crazy thing of it all is that the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing. It’s not like World War II, where people rationed food and turned in cars to be made into metal for tanks. The American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything. Unless you are in the military or the family member of a servicemember, its life as usual...the war doesn't affect you.

But it affects us. And when it is over and the troops come home and they try to piece together what's left of them after their service...where will the detractors be then? Where will the Cindy Sheehans be to comfort and talk to soldiers and help them sort out the last couple years of their lives, most of which have been spent dodging death and wading through the deaths of their friends? They will be where they always are, somewhere far away, where the horrors of the world can't touch them. Somewhere where they can complain about things they will never experience in their lifetime; things that the young men and women of America have willingly taken upon their shoulders.

We are the hope of the Iraqi people. They want what everyone else wants in life: safety, security, somewhere to call home. They want a country that is safe to raise their children in. Not a place where their children will be abducted, raped and murdered if they do not comply with the terrorists demands. They want to live on, rebuild and prosper. And America has given them the opportunity, but only if we stay true to the cause and see it to its end. But the country must unite in this endeavor...we cannot place the burden on our military alone. We must all stand up and fight, whether in uniform or not. And supporting us is more than sticking yellow ribbon stickers on your cars. It's supporting our President, our troops and our cause.

Right now, the burden is all on the American soldiers. Right now, hope rides alone. But it can change, it must change. Because there is only failure and darkness ahead for us as a country, as a people, if it doesn't.

Let's stop all the political nonsense, let's stop all the bickering, let's stop all the bad news and let's stand and fight!

Isn't that what America is about anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  75. We are standing and fighting.

  86. I bet the reichwing, spin machine claiming to be INDEPENDENT never mentions this fact;

    From TPM

To follow up on the post below about the Attorney General Awards, DOJ's highest honor, I couldn't help but notice that one of the recipients of last year's Attorney General Award for Fraud Prevention was Robert E. Coughlin, II.

Coughlin was the chief of staff to the head of DOJ's criminal division until his quiet resignation earlier this month, first reported yesterday, allegedly because he is facing scrutiny in the Jack Abramoff investigation.

The award "recognizes exceptional dedication and effort to prevent, investigate, and prosecute fraud and white collar crimes." Coughlin was part of a team honored for its work on post-Hurricane Katrina fraud.

In September, Coughlin was honored for his work on fraud and white collar crime. By the following April, he was out because of his alleged connections to the one of the largest white collar crime investigations in DOJ's history. Only in the Gonzales Justice Department.

"In principle, I do not favor Congressional involvement in the execution of U.S. foreign and military policy. I have seen its perverse effects in many cases. The conflict in Iraq is different. Over the past couple of years, the President has let it proceed on automatic pilot, making no corrections in the face of accumulating evidence that his strategy is failing and cannot be rescued.

"Thus, he lets the United States fly further and further into trouble, squandering its influence, money, and blood, facilitating the gains of our enemies. The Congress is the only mechanism we have to fill this vacuum in command judgment.

"To put this in a simple army metaphor, the Commander-in-Chief seems to have gone AWOL, that is 'absent without leave.' He neither acts nor talks as though he is in charge. Rather, he engages in tit-for-tat games.

"Some in Congress on both sides of the aisle have responded with their own tits-for-tats. These kinds of games, however, are no longer helpful, much less amusing. They merely reflect the absence of effective leadership in a crisis. And we are in a crisis.

"Most Americans suspect that something is fundamentally wrong with the President's management of the conflict in Iraq. And they are right.

"The challenge we face today is not how to win in Iraq; it is how to recover from a strategic mistake: invading Iraq in the first place. The war could never have served American interests.

"But it has served Iran's interest by revenging Saddam Hussein's invasion of Iran in the 1980s and enhancing Iran's influence within Iraq. It has also served al Qaeda's interests, providing a much better training ground than did Afghanistan, allowing it to build its ranks far above the levels and competence that otherwise would have been possible.

"We cannot 'win' a war that serves our enemies interests and not our own. Thus continuing to pursue the illusion of victory in Iraq makes no sense. We can now see that it never did.

"A wise commander in this situation normally revises his objectives and changes his strategy, not just marginally, but radically. Nothing less today will limit the death and destruction that the invasion of Iraq has unleashed.

"No effective new strategy can be devised for the United States until it begins withdrawing its forces from Iraq. Only that step will break the paralysis that now confronts us. Withdrawal is the pre-condition for winning support from countries in Europe that have stood aside and other major powers including India, China, Japan, Russia.

"It will also shock and change attitudes in Iran, Syria, and other countries on Iraq's borders, making them far more likely to take seriously new U.S. approaches, not just to Iraq, but to restoring regional stability and heading off the spreading chaos that our war has caused.

"The bill that Congress approved this week, with bipartisan support, setting schedules for withdrawal, provides the President an opportunity to begin this kind of strategic shift, one that defines regional stability as the measure of victory, not some impossible outcome.

"I hope the President seizes this moment for a basic change in course and signs the bill the Congress has sent him. I will respect him greatly for such a rare act of courage, and so too, I suspect, will most Americans.

"This is retired General Odom. Thank you for listening."

It’s Only Terrorism When They Are Muslim, Right?

    By: Nicole Belle

Remember the story of the three Muslim men who were arrested because they bought cell phones? How many days of coverage did that non-story rate? Now how much airtime has this story gotten?:

    Birmingham (AL) News:

Simultaneous raids carried out in four Alabama counties Thursday turned up truckloads of explosives and weapons, including 130 grenades, an improvised rocket launcher and 2,500 rounds of ammunition belonging to the small, but mightily armed, Alabama Free Militia.

Six alleged members of the Free Militia also were arrested by federal authorities and are being held without bond.

Investigators said the DeKalb County-based group had not made any specific threats or devised any plots, but was targeted for swift dismantling because of its heavy firepower. The militia, which called itself the Naval Militia at one point, had enough armament to outfit a small army.

"We classify these groups as violent and anti-government," said Jim Cavanaugh, who supervises the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operations in portions of the South. "They stockpile things and live off a fear, a paranoia they're going to need weapons and explosives because some event is going to happen when they will need them."

Um, how about we classify them as Domestic Terrorists? I don't know about you but violent, paranoid and heavily armed people near me would be terrifying. As Barbara at Mahablog says, it's a real relief to find out these guys aren't Muslims, huh? Otherwise they might be dangerous or something.

Just to muddy the waters even further as to who is and who isn't a terrorist, the US released suspected Cuban airline bomber Luis Posada Carriles and refused to extradite him as requested to Cuba or Venezuela where he is to stand trial for the deaths of the 73 people on board because….

    wait for it…

the 79 year old will certainly be executed for his role in terrorist acts.

  121. There is only one thing to do with Iraq. Pull out.

Nothing will work until we do.

Once we do, the UN can send in peacekeepers, and we can send in hundreds of billions of dollars.

In other words, our role here is simple. To apologize for invading them. Tell them we're going to make them all rich with massive war reparations, and then leave, and allow the UN to come in and start rebuilding.

No US contractors. No US lead plan. We attacked them, they're not going to forgive that anytime soon. As long as they think we are in charge, they'll continue to fight us and each other.

But if we apologize, send massive wealth their way, and allow the UN to move in and secure the peace, then we might have a chance of salvaging Iraq.

I essentially agree with this but its a little more complicated than that..........Yes we need to get out of there.........and yes we need to convince the common man that after the infrastructure is rebuilt they will be more prosperous and have better lives.............but we wrote the oil contracts that favor American interests both gov and corporate as well as the gov we installed and are pushing and backing and those contracts are in the Bush oil cronnies and their puppet governments best interests FAR MORE than the common Iraqi;s best interests, couple that with the different sectarian, and relgious militia fighting for power and control and its a lot more complicated than us just pulling out although that is what is needed to get the process started and get on the path to stabilization.

I think for peace you have to give all the factions a fair deal and share in the profits and investment in a stable prosperous Iraq and make sure the oil and other infrastructure improves the lives of the common iraqi instead of just the Bush administration and their oil cronnies and puppet governments while the Iraqi people still live in horrid conditions

    Exactly Mike!

It will take time, and not everyone will comply, which is why the UN peacekeepers, there at the bidding of the Iraqi people, will need to assist, particularly in the beginning.

But as they see the US's hand out of it, and the international communities support, I think they might stop fighting, and go for the brass ring.

  147. I have been giving the issue some serious thought lately.

Up until now I have always been firm on the "divided" Iraq, idea. And that just may play a part of this.

But that scenario alone doesn't explain how we'll get them to stop fighting. Good fences do make good neighbors, but only as long as the neighbors aren't trying to climb over the fence because his neighbors house is so much nicer.

So I've been thinking hard on it, and then it came to me.

The reason we're still there is the stubborn pride of a few. Even if they thought our pulling out would work, Bush and the republicans don't want to lose face. They don't want to admit they were wrong.

But thats whats going to have to happen. The US needs to allow the Iraqi people to save face, and take this one on the chin.

We need to pull out, and turn it over to the EU and the UN, and our only role is paying the hundreds of billions of dollars its going to take to rebuild the country.

The world will see us as a gentle giant that tried to do good, but screwed up. They'll see us as reasonable again, and almost patriarchal, as we sheepishly hand over our money and step aside, to let the Iraqi people get their lives back together.

I am not saying its a sure thing of course, but I think its the only thing that has a prayer.

We certainly can't "kill all the terrorists", since every man, woman and child in Iraq is potentially one.

Lets give peace a chance again.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Condi is refusing a subpoena as all these lies are catching up with her and her boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Then Condi needs to be put in jail for contempt and obstruction of justice.

    ReplyDelete
  165. And I could be wrong but I believe Bush cant pardon members of his administration if impeachment proceedings against him have begun.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Condi doesn't have time to talk to Congress but she sure has time to be on talk shows.

This morning she did ABC's "This Week", NBC's "Face the Nation" and CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer".

She sure has time to talk to them, but for some reason can't talk to Congress.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The time Condi spent on talk shows could have been before Congress.

  169. I don't know if anyones mentioned this yet, but this morning, the US Military started shelling Southern Bagdhad.

This morning, we started using Artillery on a civillian target.

    We are officially war criminals.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I know we've done it before, but to start shelling the people of Baghdad is going to cost us big in the international community.

We are using artillery on civillians.

So much for Bush's "Surgical raids".

    ReplyDelete
  171. I can't even believe I am saying this, but its true.

Sunday morning, as part of "the Bush crackdown", we started using Artillery on civillians.

Feeling proud this morning are we Voltron?

    ReplyDelete
  172. If they are shelling civilians how does that make Bush different from Bin Laden?

    ReplyDelete
  173. Well there is one small difference.

Apparently Bin Laden is not as near an effective killer as is our little King George.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Bin Laden killed several thousaqnd Americans and that was a horrific crime.

Now Bush is mowing down Iraqi civilians and that is supposed to be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I think there are international laws regarding the use of artillery on civillian targets.

We need to pay attention to this, because I think this is going to be front and center this week.

I think as more Americans hear that as part of the Bush crackdown, we're now shelling southern Baghdad, I think whats left of public support will erode.

Of course none of you guys should EVER blame the terrorists.

Terrorists target innocent civilians."

Who are the terrorists Volt because with evil Fools like Bush targetting civilians its getting hard to tell?

    ReplyDelete
  177. Most Americans are going to be appalled to learn that instead of the surgical raids Bush and Rice are talking about, we're instead shelling civillians, hoping to hit a few terrorists.

I think everyones just going to say, "give it up Mr President, ...just give it up".

Well we're not likely to find too many. Iraqi deaths for the most part go unreported except for the bodies found laying in the streets or the ones who die in hospitals. (ever wonder why the insurgents lay dead bodies in the street? cause they know we won't count them otherwise).

Besides, the shelling just started this morning, so who the hells gonna go in there and count bodies under live Artillery fire.

But I am sure we'll be hearing about this soon.

Be looking for something big this week to happen to divert from this.

Tenet is going to be the most damaging thing to hit Bush out of the millions of things hitting him lately.

Tenet's intel is what him and Cheney reference everytime they're cornered on why we went into Iraq.

If Tenet is now stating that they misused his intel, then they're screwed. No one can bail them out of that.

  182. US launches artillery barrage in southern Baghdad

    BAGHDAD, April 29 (Reuters)

The U.S. military in Iraq launched an artillery barrage in southern Baghdad on Sunday against suspected insurgent targets, with two dozen loud explosions shaking the southern outskirts of the capital.

U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Garver said the morning blasts, which were heard across the city, were caused by U.S. artillery but declined to say what the target was.

That is another part of Bush's America.

That is more of Bush's America.

  186. Doug Basham made a great comment with regards to Obama.

Obama sounded hawkish, and is over the top on Iran.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I hope Obama was just saying that because he wants out of Iraq, and they are trying to say he is weak.

I still didn't like the comment.

    More of the Bush economy.

    ReplyDelete
  189. NBC News is reporting that the Senate will launch an investigation into the Bush administration, over their refusal to take the $853 billion offered from U.S allies for Katrina victims.

    Its about time.

I heard that..............remember who said it first..............I said that months ago and I just said it again yesterday..........Cramers finally agreeing with me..............it sucks to always be right!!

  191. Cramer predicts stocks everyday and he should know.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Tenet sure is defensive. He feels bad about the Americans killed on 9/11 but hasn't said he feels bad about all the deaths he helped cause on Iraq.

  193. Gas prices has risen 36 cents this month alone.

    More of the Bush economy.

    ReplyDelete
  194. BTW, Cramer hasnt predicted a recession since the last one about 6-7 years ago as far as i'm aware he's never been wrong predicting a recession.

    ReplyDelete
  195. Cramer is supposed to have a good track record on stocks.

  196. Condi Rice is a wasted armpiece for Bush.

She was a worthless National Security Advisor and she has been a horrible, worthless Secretary of State.

She may have more degrees than a thermometer-but she's a ditz. Anna Nicole knew more about the world around her, even stoned.

Wayne Madsen said awhile back that Condoliesalot and Chimpy were getting it on, and I believe it. All of you who are married (or even unmarried) had to have had the same reaction I did when Condoliesalot referred to Chimpy as her "husband."
