SPACE HORIZONS: INSPIRATION IN SPACE

I am so excited to be on the board of advisors for Space Horizons

SpaceHorizons.org along with former JPL advocates, provides grants to high schools to promote STEM education among women and minorities. The students will build small satellites (called cubesats) that will be launched into low earth orbit and transmit a signal back to the students. NASA engineers will help them.

will.i.am's foundation i.am.angel has agreed to partner with us for a Cubesat mission in LA. They already have identified a high school and cleared the way for us.

The Advisory Committee will select missions to be performed based on an evaluation of well the proposed concepts meet the goals of the Foundation.

William Townsend, Co-owner of Townsend Aerospace Consulting, LLC. Mr Townsend has held senior management positions both within NASA and private industry, ranging from acting Associate Administrator for Earth Science at NASA Headquarters, to Deputy Center Director at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, to Vice President and General Manager for Civil Space Systems at Ball Aerospace and Technologies.

Camille Eddy, a mechanical engineering student at Boise State University, is involved in various leadership positions and projects in the STEM fields. Her work ranges from the University Team Lead for NASA’s Microgravity program MicroGNExT (a group that is working to develop a method that will help astronauts gather rocks on asteroid missions), to Research Assistant, to EPO writer for NASA, to serving as a mentor for Strive For College – Boise State Chapter, and Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars. She is a past Vice President of the National Society of Black Engineers and Vice President of the Boise State chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Camille was chosen to introduce President Obama for his speech at Boise State on January 21st. In President Obama's speech he said “It's this engagement in the STEM field that makes Eddy a role model for many young college students. She’s a great example of why we’re encouraging more women and more minorities to study in high-paying fields that traditionally they haven't always participated in -- in math and science and engineering and technology”

Christopher Stott, the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of ManSat, the world’s leading orbital filing company, and originator of the SpaceIsle marketing and branding concept for the Isle of Man, drawing from his work with Lockheed Martin Space Operations and the Boeing Company. Prior to this, Chris worked in US and British politics focused on campaigning, speech writing, and opposition research in both Westminster and Washington D.C.Chris has a passion for space based STEM education and in support of his work with ManSat he serves on the Boards of a number of Not For Profits focused in this area including the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) where he is the current President, the International Space University where he serves on the Main Board, as faculty and is a former Co-Chair of the School of Management and Business, the Challenger Centers, the Conrad Foundation, and the United Space School. Chris was also a founding director of the International Institute of Space Commerce and serves on the Institute’s Board today. In 2013 Chris was appointed to the Advisory Boards of both the Pacific Telecommunications Council and the National Electronics Museum.Chris is also a published author with the Royal Astronomical Society, the Adam Smith Institute, and the International Institute of Space Commerce where his work focuses on the economics, ethics, and regulation of space.

Michael Potter, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Manna Energy Foundation, and Director of Paradigm Ventures. Mr. Potter is also a Senior Fellow at the International Institute of Space Commerce. He is an advisor to the Singularity University and director of Orphans of Apollo. Mr. Potter is also a former Vice Chairman of the founding Board of the European Competitive Telecommunications Association.

Joe Ritter Ph.D., Dr. Ritter is involved in designing optically active materials for large aperture diffraction limited optics for telescopes and spacecraft, and novel adaptive optics. Among his latest projects are laser powered meta-material nano-actuators optical systems with the goal of launching giant ultra-lightweight space telescopes, and optical systems for Earth-based analysis of exoplanet atmospheres. Previously he was the Director of Optical Systems Research and Development for the SAIC Reconnaissance Surveillance Operations where he worked on novel active optics for space telescopes as well as imaging. He was an Associate Research Scientist in space systems engineering at the Florida Space Institute, and IPA and the Optical Systems Team Lead of NASA Advanced Optical Systems Development (at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center) where he had several research programs including novel technology development for the James Webb Space Telescope. As a doctoral student his research focused on developing novel optical instrumentation and computational techniques for measuring optical scattering, he also designed and deployed a unique imaging radiometer, performed the first solar aureole measurements ever made at sea, and co-engineered the GRaDEx genotoxicology and biological radiation dosimetry payload, (space mission STS-91). He has held faculty appointments in several areas from Astronomy, Space systems Engineering to Professor of Animal Science. His interests and skill sets are interdisciplinary: Earlier research covered fields such as, teratology, genetics, space plasma physics, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, as well as several other fields. From 1999-2011 he was awarded 23 grants (15 as PI, 8 as Co-I) where he teamed with colleagues from government, industry, and academia. He is author/co-author of over 35 publications, with over 30 invited lectures. He is founding director of the Global Starship Alliance, and CEO of Neoteric Physics, a new business engaged in space research and environmental concerns.

Dr. Johnny Johnson, Owner of Western OB/GYN Associates and Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Johnson is President of the Mile High Medical Society - a medical society for minority doctors to mentor and support medical students and residents. Dr. Johnson is also a member of the Colorado Medical Society, a past President of the Denver Medical Society, and past member of the Board of Directors at Denver Health. He is also chairman of the Board of Deacons at New Hope Baptist Church. Dr. Johnson is also a charter member of Delta Eta Boule of Sigma Pi Phi - the first Greek letter fraternity to be founded by African American men.Dr. Matt Gordon, Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Denver. Dr. Gordon's research areas include numerical and experimental plasma physics, chemical and physical vapor deposition, electronic packaging, and bio-medical engineering. Dr. Gordon is an avid supporter of STEM initiatives. He gives talks to local K-12 programs promoting engineering and directs the DU Summer engineering camp for 8th-12th graders. Dr. Gordon established the first engineering co-op program at DU and is a member of the South Metro Chamber's STEM coalition. The DU engineering curriculum is structured to be STEM friendly and Dr. Gordon will be our gateway into the substantial expertise/knowledge that the University of Denver offers. We thank Dr. Gordon and the University of Denver for their support. Dr. Gordon's passion and enthusiasm will add great value to our team.

  1. For those of you who’ve been out of the loop, there was a death in our family a few days ago and the air fare and a car malfunction really put a crimp in our finances. Details are here, if you wish to help or at least pass the word. Thank you so much in advance.
