BHHS Student Dies After Collapsing on Campus Friday

Hundreds of people attend a memorial service Sunday at the high school for a 15-year-old girl everyone loved.

A sophomore at Beverly Hills High School collapsed on campus Friday morning and died shortly afterward.

Elena Natanzadeh, who graduated from Beverly Vista in 2010, fainted on the stairs adjacent to the swim gym. She died of an undetermined ailment.

There are conflicting reports as to whether she had a heart condition and/or suffered a blot clot after recent knee surgery. Students told Patch that she had been complaining about feeling dizzy, lost consciousness on the stairs and hit her head. Several students tried unsuccessfully to administer CPR.

Administrators at the Beverly Hills Unified School District, under direction from the family, did not identify the student nor release any specific details of her death. BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods confirmed the news Sunday morning via an email and automated phone call to BHHS families.

“I am writing this morning to inform you that … a Beverly Hills High School student collapsed on campus Friday morning due to what appeared to be a medical condition,” Woods said on Sunday morning. 

“First responders provided immediate support and the student was transported to a local hospital within minutes. Unfortunately, medical personnel were unable to revive the student. The family has asked for privacy and we ask that their wishes be respected,” he said. “Grief counselors will be available on Monday for any students, faculty or staff affected by this terrible loss. … We send our deepest condolences to the family of the student.” 

More than 200 hundred people attended a memorial service Sunday afternoon on the front lawn of the BHHS campus after being notified of the remembrance via Facebook.

“Elena’s favorite color was purple, so please try to wear purple tomorrow,” suggested the Facebook post, which said it was created by eight of her friends. More than 950 people responded to the post.

High school personnel and grief counselors were among those who attended the service, where prayers in Hebrew were read. All in attendance were invited to light a candle. Natanzadeh’s grief-stricken father asked for people to do a kind act this week in memory of his daughter.

Amidst the mourning, a woman attending the service collapsed, hitting her head on the sidewalk. Paramedics were called.

Natanzadeh’s may be the first student death at the high school, though other BHHS students have died off school grounds in the past.

“As far as I can recall, there has never been a death of a student on campus,” Board of Education member Myra Lurie told Patch.

So far, 2011-2012 has been an amazing year. Along with David Mirisch we raised thousands of dollars for children with Autism at Community Coaching Center. We helped plant a garden at Carver Middle School "Carver Gardens" in South Central L.A. for underprivileged kids. We bowled for L.A. Team Mentoring to support kids who need after school programs. And we helped raise funds for the California Firefighteres and Red Cross with the Solvang Rotary. I played a horribly embarrassing game of golf in the AFTRA golf tournament to raise funds for actors who are unemployed.  And hosted the live stream for Variety's Power of Comedy honoring Russell Brand, benefiting the Noreen Fraser Cancer Foundation. Triumph over Tragedy

Lydia Cornell is a women and children’s advocate, and an inspirational speaker on domestic violence and teen suicide prevention — as well as on drug, alcohol and Adderall[1] abuse. She endured a shattering personal tragedy when she found her younger brother’s body after a drug overdose. Sober now for 15 years, she speaks to recovery groups of up to 300 or more.

She hosted a documentary for Safe Passage Home.org — an organization that gives extreme life makeovers to victims of domestic violence — which will be shown on Oxygen network. Last fall she housed domestic abuse victims and cared for their children throughout the school year. With the help of the police, Cornell helped rescue a battered woman from a predator.

Cornell speaks at high schools, hospitals, and women’s centers on overcoming grief, unemployment, sexism, ageism, depression, self-sabotage, obnoxious teenagers — and every imaginable hardship. Her talks are laced with poignant stories of transformation with an innate sense of comic timing. “If you can laugh at yourself you probably won’t kill yourself.”

Cornell’s triumph over tragedy, depression and addiction was the result of a ‘catastrophic spiritual awakening.’ “There is a reason so many celebrities are in rehab these days,” she says. Her experiences in overcoming a string of failures and humiliations inspired her to assist others with their own demons.

A mother of boys, she has been raising teenagers (and their girlfriends, who confide in her about the most troulesome things, on a daily basis.)  “I have three boys and two dogs, including my husband, and they’re all going through puberty.” She also is a teen mentor and has a site for troubled teens called “The Answer Room.” She had an epiphany: ”Teenagers are not nice people,” she jokes. “But I think the Universe makes them into jerks so we don’t miss them so much when they’re gone! Or when they’re finally old enough to leave home.”

THE DREAMS OF WOMEN

I looked out the window and saw a woman, a neighbor who had just lost her husband to a younger woman, walking to work, trying so hard just to hold her head up in spite of broken dreams. We are such a desperate species. 

All these years, the only way women could cope with the competition of so many beautiful women thrown at us on billboards, in advertising, in magazines and on TV is to become gay. The only way to deal with our defeat and low self-worth in the light of Victoria's Secret supermodels and spectacular female beauty is to embrace the enemy and make out with her!

It sure beats wallowing in envy and resentment that she has a hit series... and that any woman over 40 (who was ever considered beautiful) was not allowed to work in Hollywood. Up until recently, this was actually true. Helen Mirren aside.  

On that note, I think Piper Perabo is stunning and cool. She plays a spy and is not afraid to break a fingernail. 

I'm not gay, by the way. Not that there's anything wrong with that. My beautiful sister is gay and has written one of the most poignant "in defense of gay marriage" essays I've ever read. She describes how she has often felt "half a human" and not worthy of real love in her life, because of the way society classifies her as a second class citizen. Simply because she found her soul mate in another woman, she is not granted the freedom or rights or pursuit of happiness that other humans are granted without question. How can this even be possible after the Civil Rights Act?

THE NEW AMERICAN DREAM: WEALTH DOES NOT MEAN SUCCESS

Tricky headline. What I mean is, we are shifting rapidly from a consumer-driven, materialistic culture to more of an interdependent, social culture.

In the new emerging world, stuff is no longer important. People and networking with friends, making new friends, sharing ideas and helping others is much more important than accumulating stuff.

We are entering a new paradigm, a new way of trading goods and services, and a new way of living.

The reason Americans are all on antidepressants is because the American Dream led us down the wrong path. Natural life is supposed to be joyous, harmonious, loving, interdependent. We are supposed to be helping each other, sharing, enjoying each other's creativity and never competing (except in the games.) It was never supposed to be about stressful competition, accumulating wealth, bigger houses, longer working hours, killing each other, starting territorial or mineral wars. How misguided we have been.

That's why recovery in the economy may be painful for awhile. We are on the cutting edge of a whole new way of life.

Wealth and power have been our conventional measures of success. What definition will better sustain us now and how can we move into it?

The other day, my mother mentioned that she hasn't accomplished anything in her life. (She's a forest and machine engineer who hasn't found a suitable job since immigrating from the Soviet Union 20 years ago) It broke my heart to hear this. We live in a world that makes people value themselves more and more singularly by their career highs and financial prowess.

The conventional model of success has proven to be destructive, separating and pitting us against each other in competition.
