BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS

Liberals Have True Moral, Christian Family Values
by Lydia Cornell

“Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things...every one! So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor." -- Matt Santos, The West Wing (courtesy of my friend at Simply Left Behind

Until I was a guest on several conservative radio stations, I had forgotten how un-Christian right-wing talk radio is. Rush, Michael Savage, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Neil Boortz, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham — all these elitists (yes Beck, Ingraham, Coulter, and Bush himself are all Ivy League graduates) — are involved in "liberal bashing as blood sport," demonizing liberals and brainwashing their followers to hate most of the American population. Why? Because liberals are FOR the middle class. Liberals are not for the corporatocracy and the ruling elite which runs America today. Republicans are the people who have outsourced all our jobs to China. They are working to destroy the middle class.

My favorite TV show is BIG LOVE on HBO. It's about a polygamist and his three wives. It's the most fascinating, unique group of characters and plotline. I was thinking about religion in general and how misguided the idea of "the Rapture" is, especially the freakish idea that only those who have declared Jesus as their Savior, will be snatched up to heaven leaving everyone else behind to be thrown by Jesus into eternal hellfire damnation. This is so bizarre, so un-Christlike as to be antiChrist.

Here's what I believe: When humans can love each other unconditionally — love their enemies and their neighbors as themselves — then the "Rapture" will happen. It will not be a big Broadway show; it will be a change in consciousness. We will then see heaven as we “become one” with God, or love. This is the Second Coming. It will occur in the hearts of men.

Pastor John Hagee is itching for war with Iran, and Israel's eventual annihilation in order to bring on Armageddon so he can hurry up Christ's return. Many end-times fundamentalists and Dominionists believe this, as well as readers of the Left Behind books. All these people are so busy with their judgement-driven mortal schemes which have nothing to do with God, Love. It's almost as if these people have never read the Great Peacemaker's teachings. They are mired in the Old Testament with its archaic legalistic laws, and never bother to read the New Testament where Christ appears.

It saddens me that many in the "religious right” have taken their obsession with morality and their fear of Hollywood to such an extreme; they've lost compassion for their fellow man. They have become homophobic, disdainful of the poor and cruel toward any human who does not meet their rigorous standards — while ignoring their own pride, the character defect which annoyed Christ the most. If Jesus Christ were to walk the earth today, he would be called a 'bleeding heart Liberal.'

On Alan Colmes show, Ann Coulter said "Only Republicans have God!"

I honestly believe most liberals, by their very nature, act like Christ, walk like Christ and talk like Christ — sometimes without even knowing it. Their values are most in line with the Great Peacemaker's teachings: charity, compassion, social justice, equality, liberty, generosity, the Golden Rule, kindness. Without espousing any religious dogma or belonging to any religious organization, they express the innate virtues and character of the Christ Truth. "Love one another."

Religion often has nothing to do with God. God is Love (and Truth, Life, Mind, Principle, Harmony...) I love this definition of God: Good Orderly Direction

The one thing I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, is that God exists. God is love and is the most powerful force in the universe. I have had miraculous prayer healings, which are really just natural laws being activated (when you get your head out of the way.) We activate this power when we are in harmony with others, when we choose to be kind or generous or loving despite feeling angry or fearful. I have spine-tingling evidence of God's power in my own life, as many of us have had. In fact, the defining moment in my life is when I "found God." But not the kind of God you might be thinking of. Not the kind that divides and judges. And certainly not an anthropomorphic God. God is within us all and we can choose to take a leap of faith at any time. It's best with your eyes closed.

I keep thinking this is self-evident and everyone knows this, but it's good to remind those who are still coming out of the dark ages of 2000-2004, when Turd Blossom (Karl Rove) somehow convinced Evangelicals to align themselves with the wrong party. And for 30 years before that, when the Christian Coalition and Moral Majority started their agressive political lobbying to brainwash good people into voting Republican. They did this by demonizing Democrats. Imagine Christ or any real Christian provoking people to hate their fellow man. Now the swift-boating is starting all over again.

If Jesus of Nazareth was anything, he was an extraordinary friend of the down- trodden, definitely a Liberal, whose advocacy on their behalf so infuriated the ultra-Conservative religious and political leaders of his day that they had him killed to prevent the public from hearing his very liberal teachings, such as "Bless those who persecute you; love your neighbor as yourself, love your enemy, take care of the the least among you (the poor)..."

Those who actually know what the Bible says about the life and teaching of Jesus recognize that far from being like Jesus of Nazareth, today's "Religious Right" are much more like the kind of clerics who battled this revolutionary prophet from the day he opened his mouth until the day they had him nailed to a cross. Although these people claim to represent Jesus Christ, they rarely quote his teaching or follow his example. What they do instead is use his name ("in vain") to promote their ideas, ideas which Jesus himself did not teach, and might well have opposed. From LiberalsLikeChrist.org

Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi

"And now these three remain: Faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13)

The Family Research Council is launching a project aimed at convincing its supporters before the 2008 election that liberal politicians “are spouting God-talk” in order to “confuse people of faith” and hide their “true agenda.” We refute the lies of the Religious Right: that you can’t be a Christian if you’re a Democrat! I have never heard of anything more perverse.

In fact, there is very little I recognize of Christ in these pharisees. They have utterly and completely missed the entire point of Christ's teachings. It is astounding how they can call themselves "Christians" with a straight face. I've said this before, but maybe they don't realize that the word "Christ" is the root of the word Christianity, because the vowel sounds are different. They have actually left Christ out of their bizarre, militant version of Christianity.

TODAY on Basham and Cornell Radio Show we interviewed Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan, author of "Take This Job and Ship it: How Corporate Greed and Brain Dead Politics Are Selling Out America." We also discuss the religious right.

If you missed it, you can listen in the archives. This past Friday August 10th, Senator John Edwards was our guest. The Basham and Cornell Show broadcasts weekday mornings at 8 am Pacific Time on AM 1230 KLAV in Las Vegasat 8 am Pacific (11 a.m. Eastern). All shows are simulcast on the Internet (and archived) and can be listened to at BASHAM AND CORNELL.COM

Oops! Wrong Tony Perkins

Invoking the Religious Right’s recent favored phrase for its imagined constituency – as well as the “Swift Boat” campaign of 2004 – the so-called “Values Voters for Truth” campaign is an attempt to vilify liberals – and, obviously, Democratic candidates – as enemies of Christianity who are undertaking a conspiracy to “deceive and split values voters.”

From a recent fundraising letter from Family Research Council Action:

Our relentless effort to reveal the facts about the Left’s true agenda is already under way. It will not stop until the last vote of the 2008 election has been cast. The Values Voters for Truth campaign will partner with organizations in all 50 states—and at the national level. We will mobilize values voters, engage them in the war of ideas, and keep them informed and involved.
We will rally churches to the cause. And by God’s grace, we will neutralize our opponents’ deceptive tactics.

As an example of this supposed “fraud,” the letter cites a Democratic presidential candidate who spoke of his “belief in Christ” and also supports civil unions for gay couples. Similarly, the letter warns that a candidate noting a “biblical call to feed the hungry” also voted against an anti-abortion bill. A third candidate is denounced for the “hypocrisy” of wanting to let gay couples adopt children. According to FRC, these supposed contradictions indicate that Democrats discussing their faith and values is merely “lip service,” part of a “campaign of deception” that led directly to the Democrats winning control of Congress in the 2006 elections.

Anti-abortion activist Mark Crutcher denounces "Godless Left[, which] has always embraced genocide as a means to an end." There's "no such thing as a 'pro-choice Christian,'" he adds.

I found this bizarre statement in an equally bizarre article on the Renew America website, a right-wing evangelical site.

“To think that .....Dr. James Dobson, Dr. Jerry Falwell. Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity... and so many others have been working diligently on the frontlines of the family culture war for years is amazing. These men and women have put their faith into action and many have paid the price by being beaten and battered by the liberal media who have no clue what love for others is like because they are so beholden to their worldview of self-centeredness.

I realized what an awesome heritage these men and women have carved out for my generation. And I left truly humbled by the fact that I have the privilege to walk where many of them have walked.”
