Small objects are very difficult to detect, and therefore defend against.”

Bill Cooke, who runs the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said some calculations have now been done for the object that broke up over Russia. He said it is probably an interloper from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, deflected our way, probably by a close pass with another object sometime in its past.

“It took 2.1 years to go around the Sun once,” he said, “so it was out in the asteroid belt about a year ago.”

Cooke pointed out that meteorite impacts — smaller ones — are really quite common: “The Earth intercepts 80 tons of material per day.” Car-sized objects from space fall to Earth every month or so.

An event like today’s, doing damage that people notice, happens every 50 to 100 years, said Chodas. This was the biggest and most destructive since the Tunguska impact in Siberia in 1908.

The Tunguska impact in Siberia in 1908 was probably caused by an object estimated mass of 190,000 metric ton, 50 meters in diameter, and it detonated with the power of a hydrogen bomb. The explosion flattened the tundra around for 50 miles in every direction.clifhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01789324243613548212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-18630970591196990012013-02-15T15:28:10.419-08:002013-02-15T15:28:10.419-08:00ok....its mid February, and the temperatures are s...ok....its mid February, and the temperatures are still in the 40s. Furthermore, soil destabilization from melting ice has caused an increase in thermokarst failures that expose buried C and release dissolved organic C (DOC) to surface waters. Once exposed, the fate of this C is unknown but will depend on its reactivity to sunlight and microbial attack, and the light available at the surface. In this study we manipulated water released from areas of thermokarst activity to show that newly exposed DOC is >40% more susceptible to microbial conversion to CO2 when exposed to UV light than when kept dark. When integrated over the water column of receiving rivers, this susceptibility translates to the light-stimulated bacterial activity being on average from 11% to 40% of the total areal activity in turbid versus DOC-colored rivers, respectively. The range of DOC lability to microbes seems to depend on prior light exposure, implying that sunlight may act as an amplification factor in the conversion of frozen C stores to C gases in the atmosphere.

Pertinent quote.

"Until now, we didn't really know how reactive this ancient permafrost carbon would be — whether it would be converted into heat-trapping gases quickly or not," said Kling, a professor in the U-M Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. EEB graduate student Jason Dobkowski is a co-author of the paper.

"What we can say now is that regardless of how fast the thawing of the Arctic permafrost occurs, the conversion of this soil carbon to carbon dioxide and its release into the atmosphere will be faster than we previously thought," Kling said. "That means permafrost carbon is potentially a huge factor that will help determine how fast the Earth warms."

Tremendous stores of organic carbon have been frozen in Arctic permafrost soils for thousands of years. If thawed and released as carbon dioxide gas, this vast carbon repository has the potential to double the amount of the heat-trapping greenhouse gas in the atmosphere on a timescale similar to humanity's inputs of carbon dioxide due to the burning of fossil fuels.

Not good news if you have children or like me soon to have grandchildren.clifhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01789324243613548212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-51710226958623045152013-02-12T11:44:17.142-08:002013-02-12T11:44:17.142-08:00When we learn to beat our swords into plowshares, ...When we learn to beat our swords into plowshares, then we're on our way back into the light.WORFnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-53429165659282894342013-02-12T11:43:27.240-08:002013-02-12T11:43:27.240-08:00Finally, someone actually gets the message of the ...Finally, someone actually gets the message of the Bible.WORFnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-87508390297996995832013-02-12T11:24:19.307-08:002013-02-12T11:24:19.307-08:00Kudos to them;

In video captured by KRDO, sparks fly as a buzz saw cuts through the rifle’s barrel. The gun’s high-capacity magazine was also pounded flat with a hammer.

The fisherman and hunter explained that he bought the rifle out of fear and it had been “guarding my fishing hole for terrorists.”

But the mass killing of 20 elementary school children in Newtown, Connecticut was the “last straw,” he said.

“I offer this up for my own penance,” Warren remarked. “It’s worth some money but I couldn’t very well turn it back over into the system. I would then become an arms trader myself.”

“This thing will turn a human being into rags,” he added. “The fact of the matter is, upon reflection, I concluded that it would be stupid for me to keep thing. And now it’s gone.”

Artist Mike Martin told The Gazette that the remains of Warren’s firearm would be “heated, reshaped and turned into a garden trowel, a cultivator and a weed puller.” The tools will then be donated to Ranch Community Garden, a non-profit project that provides plots to local residents who do not have garden space.

Anyone wishing to donate weapons to the “Guns-to-Garden Tools” project can contact the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission.

“Thank God I’m free of the damn thing,” Warren said at the conclusion of Monday’s event.

What we really need more tools to grow food less tools to kill people.
clifhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01789324243613548212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-12496392639563797522013-02-12T08:17:58.169-08:002013-02-12T08:17:58.169-08:00...couldn't have happened to a nicer guy....couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.WORFYnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-85601737265075847372013-02-12T08:07:09.952-08:002013-02-12T08:07:09.952-08:00Deadbeat Joe.
