MOST INSPIRING PERSON OF YEAR

Most Inspiring Person of the Year, 2006
Most Inspiring of 2006: Why the Amish Won
With an act of radical forgiveness, a grieving community showed the world an alternative response to violence.

I vote for the Amish and also for CANDY CHRISTMAS, the beautiful Nashville singer who feeds the homeless every week out of her own pocket. Here's a letter I got from my friend Larry:

"I wish you have been in Nashville today. Candy took a semi load of food 20,000 lbs and a bus full of volunteers and a bus load of singers to Jamestown Tenn. which is the poorest area in Tenn. They put on a concert, gave away a refrigerator, Stove, 4 recliners and 20,000 lbs of food to the poor.

I don't know how many people I gave food boxes to, that told me this was a lifesaver. You would have loved it. A radio station in Columbus Georgia wants her to bring the troops there and do the same thing. They filmed it so I will get you a copy as soon as I get one. Monday night she is giving a Christmas party for the volunteers to Thank them for their hard work all year. These volunteers love doing this.

As I stood there watching Candy sing and looking over the gymnasium full of really poor people I thought about you and that you would like this."

MOST INSPIRING PEOPLE...
This year’s 12 most inspiring people once again proved the power of individuals to act with love, courage, and forgiveness in the most challenging situations.

The Amish of Nickel Mines, Pa.—a pacifist religious community in rural Lancaster County who practice a simple farming life without modern conveniences much the same as their 17th century Swiss-German forbears—suffered a shocking intrusion into their world when a local milkman, Charles Roberts, invaded a one-room schoolhouse, shooting 10 young girls, leaving five of them dead. During the ordeal, one of the girls, 13-year-old Marian Fisher, offered to be killed first in hopes that the others would be spared. (View video: A Young Girl's Sacrifice.) A Beliefnet member wrote of this event: “I cannot ignore this unbelievable act of love by a girl this young. In my mind, this little girl did no more or no less than Jesus did for us on the cross.” Within hours of the shooting, the families of the children not only expressed their forgiveness of the killer but reached out to his family, giving food and raising money for his wife and children.

In a Beliefnet video interview, Herman Bontrager, a spokesman for the Amish of Nickel Mines, explained, “The Amish believe that we must forgive because we ourselves need to be forgiven. [They're] trying to live the way Jesus lived. He turned the other cheek, he told us to love everybody, to love our enemies." A Beliefnet member noted, “The message of forgiveness, rather than vengeance, goes to the heart of how we should behave toward each other. This is an extreme example of how true faith and true forgiveness can be awe-inspiring. If the Amish can forgive the man who killed their children, how much more should the rest of us be able to forgive the petty hurts and perceived insults we receive each day?”

For the incredible example of living faith on the part of an entire community that lost its children, the majority of Beliefnet users cast their votes for the Amish. And the editors of Beliefnet follow their lead by naming the Amish of Nickel Mines, Pa. the Most Inspiring People of 2006.

We asked you to choose between some tremendously inspiring folks, and we were in for some surprises. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who spoke against racism and anti-Semitism, and "green" evangelical Rev. Richard Cizik, who works to save the environment, were knocked off in the first round.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was that a homeless Detroit man, Charles Moore, who returned $21,000 in savings bonds he found in the trash to their rightful owner, defeated billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett, who this year gave the biggest charitable donation in history. Some of you wrote that Moore’s story reminded you of the New Testament lesson of “the widow’s mite.” Moore gave everything he had, because of his deeply grounded sense of honesty and integrity, shattering stereotypes about homeless people in the process.

Some other truly remarkable people lost by a slim margin. Elissa Montanti, the “saint of Staten Island,” who with single-minded devotion cuts red tape to get prosthetic limbs and medical help for war-maimed children, lost narrowly to Todd Corbin, a marine who courageously saved the lives of his unit in Iraq. One remarkable teenager—Adam Zuckerman, who is already one of the country’s most outspoken activists for Darfur—was edged out by another teen, Jason McElwain, an autistic boy whose amazing final-quarter shots for his high school basketball team proved that disability is no impediment to achieving your dreams. Another inspiring child, Bindi Irwin, daughter of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin who has taken up her father’s mantle of wildlife preservation, was chosen over wheelchair-bound actress, Kathleen Traylor, who started a theater where the disabled showcase their formidable acting talents.

In the second round of voting, Lance Corporal Todd Corbin of Ohio was named one of the final three. He is an outstanding example of heroism under pressure. On patrol in Iraq, Corbin saved the lives of many of the men in his unit, carrying people off the field of battle under heavy fire. At one point, he carried his wounded patrol leader over his shoulder while returning enemy fire with his free hand. When he drove away—in a 7-ton truck with three flat tires—he had the entire remaining platoon safely inside. His courage is only equaled by his modesty and faith. In an interview with Beliefnet, he explained, “The way I was raised, you always put yourself out for other people because there is going to come a time when you are down and are going to need someone to help you up. It is the core of my family values.” He added, “I always say people should not credit me with what happened on May 7, but credit God.”

The other two final candidates showed the kind of radical forgiveness that some have called miraculous. Both finalists suffered the horror of having of having family members brutally murdered. Immaculee Ilibagiza, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, hid in a tiny bathroom for three months and emerged to find her parents, siblings, and thousands of countrymen dead. At first unable to pray because of her anger, Immaculee surrendered “everything to God” and in a vision understood what Jesus meant when he said “Forgive them, Father, for they don't know what they do.” She prayed for her enemies and the anger was lifted. She reached out to her father’s killer, and has been lecturing all over the country on the power and importance of forgiveness. Her inspiring example is a beacon for many Beliefnet users.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Great minds think alike, Lydia! I just named him as my most inspirational person of 2006, even tho I've known about Yunus since Bill Clinton met with him in 1997 and started a similar micro-loan program out of the State Department.

We've thoroughly subjugated an entire race of people for our convenience, held them hostage to regimes that under any other circumstances would have been embargoed and isolated, and yet, you call it "being mean".

Why is it, Fawnbot, that when you've been thoroughly drubbed with logic, like, say, daily, you resort to idiotic semantic games?

    What a doosh.

Here, doosh, is the dictionary definition of race. Now come here and suck my cock, beeyatch:

"race2 /reɪs/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[reys] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
    2. a population so related.
    3. Anthropology. a. any of the traditional divisions of humankind, the commonest being the Caucasian, Mongoloid, and Negro, characterized by supposedly distinctive and universal physical characteristics: no longer in technical use.
    b. an arbitrary classification of modern humans, sometimes, esp. formerly, based on any or a combination of various physical characteristics, as skin color, facial form, or eye shape, and now frequently based on such genetic markers as blood groups.
    c. a human population partially isolated reproductively from other populations, whose members share a greater degree of physical and genetic similarity with one another than with other humans.

    4. a group of tribes or peoples forming an ethnic stock: the Slavic race.
    5. any people united by common history, language, cultural traits, etc.: the Dutch race. "

Former U.S. Detainee in Iraq Recalls Torment

    By MICHAEL MOSS

One night in mid-April, the steel door clanked shut on detainee No. 200343 at Camp Cropper, the United States military’s maximum-security detention site in Baghdad.

American guards arrived at the man’s cell periodically over the next several days, shackled his hands and feet, blindfolded him and took him to a padded room for interrogation, the detainee said. After an hour or two, he was returned to his cell, fatigued but unable to sleep.

The fluorescent lights in his cell were never turned off, he said. At most hours, heavy metal or country music blared in the corridor. He said he was rousted at random times without explanation and made to stand in his cell. Even lying down, he said, he was kept from covering his face to block out the light, noise and cold. And when he was released after 97 days he was exhausted, depressed and scared.

Detainee 200343 was among thousands of people who have been held and released by the American military in Iraq, and his account of his ordeal has provided one of the few detailed views of the Pentagon’s detention operations since the abuse scandals at Abu Ghraib. Yet in many respects his case is unusual.

The detainee was Donald Vance, a 29-year-old Navy veteran from Chicago who went to Iraq as a security contractor. He wound up as a whistle-blower, passing information to the F.B.I. about suspicious activities at the Iraqi security firm where he worked, including what he said was possible illegal weapons trading.

But when American soldiers raided the company at his urging, Mr. Vance and another American who worked there were detained as suspects by the military, which was unaware that Mr. Vance was an informer, according to officials and military documents.

At Camp Cropper, he took notes on his imprisonment and smuggled them out in a Bible.

“Sick, very. Vomited,” he wrote July 3. The next day: “Told no more phone calls til leave.”

Nathan Ertel, the American held with Mr. Vance, brought away military records that shed further light on the detention camp and its secretive tribunals. Those records include a legal memorandum explicitly denying detainees the right to a lawyer at detention hearings to determine whether they should be released or held indefinitely, perhaps for prosecution.

The story told through those records and interviews illuminates the haphazard system of detention and prosecution that has evolved in Iraq, where detainees are often held for long periods without charges or legal representation, and where the authorities struggle to sort through the endless stream of detainees to identify those who pose real threats.

“Even Saddam Hussein had more legal counsel than I ever had,” said Mr. Vance, who said he planned to sue the former defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld, on grounds that his constitutional rights had been violated. “While we were detained, we wrote a letter to the camp commandant stating that the same democratic ideals we are trying to instill in the fledgling democratic country of Iraq, from simple due process to the Magna Carta, we are absolutely, positively refusing to follow ourselves.”

A spokeswoman for the Pentagon’s detention operations in Iraq, First Lt. Lea Ann Fracasso, said in written answers to questions that the men had been “treated fair and humanely,” and that there was no record of either man complaining about their treatment.

    Held as ‘a Threat’

She said officials did not reach Mr. Vance’s contact at the F.B.I. until he had been in custody for three weeks. Even so, she said, officials determined that he “posed a threat” and decided to continue holding him. He was released two months later, Lieutenant Fracasso said, based on a “subsequent re-examination of his case,” and his stated plans to leave Iraq.

Mr. Ertel, 30, a contract manager who knew Mr. Vance from an earlier job in Iraq, was released more quickly.

Mr. Vance went to Iraq in 2004, first to work for a Washington-based company. He later joined a small Baghdad-based security company where, he said, “things started looking weird to me.” He said that the company, which was protecting American reconstruction organizations, had hired guards from a sheik in Basra and that many of them turned out to be members of militias whom the clients did not want around.

Mr. Vance said the company had a growing cache of weapons it was selling to suspicious customers, including a steady flow of officials from the Iraqi Interior Ministry. The ministry had ties to violent militias and death squads. He said he had also witnessed another employee giving American soldiers liquor in exchange for bullets and weapon repairs.

On a visit to Chicago in October 2005, Mr. Vance met twice with an F.B.I. agent who set up a reporting system. Weekly, Mr. Vance phoned the agent from Iraq and sent him e-mail messages. “It was like, ‘Hey, I heard this and I saw this.’ I wanted to help,” Mr. Vance said. A government official familiar with the arrangement confirmed Mr. Vance’s account.

In April, Mr. Ertel and Mr. Vance said, they felt increasingly uncomfortable at the company. Mr. Ertel resigned and company officials seized the identification cards that both men needed to move around Iraq or leave the country.

On April 15, feeling threatened, Mr. Vance phoned the United States Embassy in Baghdad. A military rescue team rushed to the security company. Again, Mr. Vance described its operations, according to military records.

“Internee Vance indicated a large weapons cache was in the compound in the house next door,” Capt. Plymouth D. Nelson, a military detention official, wrote in a memorandum dated April 22, after the men were detained. “A search of the house and grounds revealed two large weapons caches.”

On the evening of April 15, they met with American officials at the embassy and stayed overnight. But just before dawn, they were awakened, handcuffed with zip ties and made to wear goggles with lenses covered by duct tape. Put into a Humvee, Mr. Vance said he asked for a vest and helmet, and was refused.

They were driven through dangerous Baghdad roads and eventually to Camp Cropper. They were placed in cells at Compound 5, the high-security unit where Saddam Hussein has been held.

Only days later did they receive an explanation: They had become suspects for having associated with the people Mr. Vance tried to expose.

“You have been detained for the following reasons: You work for a business entity that possessed one or more large weapons caches on its premises and may be involved in the possible distribution of these weapons to insurgent/terrorist groups,” Mr. Ertel’s detention notice said.

Mr. Vance said he began seeking help even before his cell door closed for the first time. “They took off my blindfold and earmuffs and told me to stand in a corner, where they cut off the zip ties, and told me to continue looking straight forward and as I’m doing this, I’m asking for an attorney,” he said. “ ‘I want an attorney now,’ I said, and they said, ‘Someone will be here to see you.’ ”

Instead, they were given six-digit ID numbers. The guards shortened Mr. Vance’s into something of a nickname: “343.” And the routine began.

Bread and powdered drink for breakfast and sometimes a piece of fruit. Rice and chicken for lunch and dinner. Their cells had no sinks. The showers were irregular. They got 60 minutes in the recreation yard at night, without other detainees.

Five times in the first week, guards shackled the prisoners’ hands and feet, covered their eyes, placed towels over their heads and put them in wheelchairs to be pushed to a room with a carpeted ceiling and walls. There they were questioned by an array of officials who, they said they were told, represented the F.B.I., the C.I.A., the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

“It’s like boom, boom, boom,” Mr. Ertel said. “They are drilling you. ‘We know you did this, you are part of this gun smuggling thing.’ And I’m saying you have it absolutely way off.”

The two men slept in their 9-by-9-foot cells on concrete slabs, with worn three-inch foam mats. With the fluorescent lights on and the temperature in the 50s, Mr. Vance said, “I paced myself to sleep, walking until I couldn’t anymore. I broke the straps on two pair of flip-flops.”

Asked about the lights, the detainee operations spokeswoman said that the camp’s policy was to turn off cell lights at night “to allow detainees to sleep.”

    A Psychological Game

One day, Mr. Vance met with a camp psychologist. “He realized I was having difficulties,” Mr. Vance said. “He said to turn it into a game. He said: ‘I want you to pretend you are a soldier who has been kidnapped, and that you still have a duty to do. Memorize everything you can about everything that happens to you. Make it like you are a spy on the inside.’ I think he called it rational emotive behavioral therapy, and I started doing that.”

Camp Rule 31 barred detainees from writing on the white cell walls, which were bare except for a black crescent moon painted on one wall to indicate the direction of Mecca for prayers. But Mr. Vance began keeping track of the days by making hash marks on the wall, and he also began writing brief notes that he hid in the Bible given to him by guards.

“Turned in request for dentist + phone + embassy letter + request for clothes,” he wrote one day.

“Boards,” he wrote April 24, the day he and Mr. Ertel went before Camp Cropper’s Detainee Status Board.

Their legal rights, laid out in a letter from Lt. Col. Bradley J. Huestis of the Army, the president of the status board, allowed them to attend the hearing and testify. However, under Rule 3, the letter said, “You do not have the right to legal counsel, but you may have a personal representative assist you at the hearing if the personal representative is reasonably available.”

Mr. Vance and Mr. Ertel were permitted at their hearings only because they were Americans, Lieutenant Fracasso said. The cases of all other detainees are reviewed without the detainees present, she said. In both types of cases, defense lawyers are not allowed to attend because the hearings are not criminal proceedings, she said.

Lieutenant Fracasso said that currently there were three Americans in military custody in Iraq. The military does not identify detainees.

Mr. Vance and Mr. Ertel had separate hearings. They said their requests to be each other’s personal representative had been denied.

At the hearings, a woman and two men wearing Army uniforms but no name tags or rank designations sat a table with two stacks of documents. One was about an inch thick, and the men were allowed to see some papers from that stack. The other pile was much thicker, but they were told that this pile was evidence only the board could see.

The men pleaded with the board. “I’m telling them there has been a major mix-up,” Mr. Ertel said. “Please, I’m out of my mind. I haven’t slept. I’m not eating. I’m terrified.”

Mr. Vance said he implored the board to delve into his laptop computer and cellphone for his communications with the F.B.I. agent in Chicago.

Each of the hearings lasted about two hours, and the men said they never saw the board again.

“At the end, my first question was, ‘Does my family know I’m alive?’ and the lead man said, ‘I don’t know,’ ” Mr. Vance recounted. “And then I asked when will we have an answer, and they said on average it takes three to four weeks.”

    Help From the Outside

About a week later, two weeks into his detention, Mr. Vance was allowed to make his first call, to Chicago. He called his fiancée, Diane Schwarz, who told him she had thought he might have died.

“It was very overwhelming,” Ms. Schwarz recalls of the 12-minute conversation. “He wasn’t quite sure what was going on, and was kind of turning to me for answers and I was turning to him for the same.”

She had already been calling members of Congress, alarmed by his disappearance. So was Mr. Ertel’s mother, and some officials began pressing for answers. “I would appreciate your looking into this matter,” Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois wrote to a State Department official in early May.

On May 7, the Camp Cropper detention board met again, without either man present, and determined that Mr. Ertel was “an innocent civilian,” according to the spokeswoman for detention operations. It took authorities 18 more days to release him.

Mr. Vance’s situation was more complicated. On June 17, Lt. Col. Keir-Kevin Curry, a spokesman for the American military’s detention unit, Task Force 134, wrote to tell Ms. Schwarz that Mr. Vance was still being held. “The detainee board reviewed his case and recommended he remain interned,” he wrote. “Multi-National Force-Iraq approved the board’s recommendation to continue internment. Therefore, Mr. Vance continues to be a security detainee. We are not processing him for release. His case remains under investigation and there is no set timetable for completion.” Over the following weeks, Mr. Vance said he made numerous written requests — for a lawyer, for blankets, for paper to write letters home. Mr. Vance said that he wrote 10 letters to Ms. Schwarz, but that only one made it to Chicago. Dated July 17, it was delivered late last month by the Red Cross.

“Diana, start talking, sending e-mail and letters and faxes to the alderman, mayor, governor, congressman, senators, Red Cross, Amnesty International, A.C.L.U., Vatican, and other Christian-based organizations. Everyone!” he wrote. “I am missing you so much, and am so depressed it’s a daily struggle here. My life is in your hands. Please don’t get discouraged. Don’t take ‘No’ for answers. Keep working. I have to tell myself these things every day, but I can’t do anything from a cell.”

The military has never explained why it continued to consider Mr. Vance a security threat, except to say that officials decided to release him after further review of his case.

“Treating an American citizen in this fashion would have been unimaginable before 9/11,” said Mike Kanovitz, a Chicago lawyer representing Mr. Vance.

On July 20, Mr. Vance wrote in his notes: “Told ‘Leaving Today.’ Took shower and shaved, saw doctor, got civ clothes back and passport.”

On his way out, Mr. Vance said: “They asked me if I was intending to write a book, would I talk to the press, would I be thinking of getting an attorney. I took it as, ‘Shut up, don’t talk about this place,’ and I kept saying, ‘No sir, I want to go home.’ ”

Mr. Ertel has returned to Baghdad, again working as a contracts manager. Mr. Vance is back in Chicago, still feeling the effects of having been a prisoner of the war in Iraq.

“It’s really hard,” he says. “I don’t really talk about this stuff with my family. I feel ashamed, depressed, still have nightmares, and I’d even say I suffer from some paranoia.”

  31. But hey, Fawnbot...let's hear what the experts have to say on this subject, since you seem determined to root yourself in 19th Century thinking, DUNCEcap and all:

American Anthropological Association's Statement On "Race"

"In the United States both scholars and the general public have been conditioned to viewing human races as natural and separate divisions within the human species based on visible physical differences. With the vast expansion of scientific knowledge in this century, however, it has become clear that human populations are not unambiguous, clearly demarcated, biologically distinct groups. Evidence from the analysis of genetics (e.g., DNA) indicates that most physical variation, about 94%, lies within so-called racial groups. Conventional geographic "racial" groupings differ from one another only in about 6% of their genes. This means that there is greater variation within "racial" groups than between them. In neighboring populations there is much overlapping of genes and their phenotypic (physical) expressions. Throughout history whenever different groups have come into contact, they have interbred. The continued sharing of genetic materials has maintained all of humankind as a single species. "

Meaning, basically, it's impossible, based on physical characteristics, to define someone's race, since on average that "racial group" has more in common with other "racial" groups than it does with other members of it's own group!

    Next...

"Ultimately "race" as an ideology about human differences was subsequently spread to other areas of the world. It became a strategy for dividing, ranking, and controlling colonized people used by colonial powers everywhere. But it was not limited to the colonial situation. In the latter part of the 19th century it was employed by Europeans to rank one another and to justify social, economic, and political inequalities among their peoples. During World War II, the Nazis under Adolf Hitler enjoined the expanded ideology of "race" and "racial" differences and took them to a logical end: the extermination of 11 million people of "inferior races" (e.g., Jews, Gypsies, Africans, homosexuals, and so forth) and other unspeakable brutalities of the Holocaust. "

In other words, the definition of race moved from the quaint Darwinian concept of physical differences to behavioral or cultural differences. Not choice, mind you, culture.

    Next...

"At the end of the 20th century, we now understand that human cultural behavior is learned, conditioned into infants beginning at birth, and always subject to modification. No human is born with a built-in culture or language. Our temperaments, dispositions, and personalities, regardless of genetic propensities, are developed within sets of meanings and values that we call "culture." Studies of infant and early childhood learning and behavior attest to the reality of our cultures in forming who we are. "

See? Not a choice. Learned in infancy. Yes, you can choose later, but the vast majority of people do not.

So, now, race has moved from physical quantification to cultural.

Gee...who just said that on the blog here?

    Um....me. ;-)

Now...what was it you were blathering on about?

Someone please explain to me why it is that to a neocon, speaking about factual historical events somehow constitutes "bashing"?

    Cause I don't get it.

The inquisitions were historical fact. Not Christian bashing.

The Malleus Maleficarum was an actual historical document, not 'Christian bashing".

Gregorio Papereschi, or Pope Innocent as he was ironically dubbed, was not an invention of "Christian bashing", but an actual historical figure.

Why is it, that to people like FF, not speaking of an evil or sin, somehow negates it's reality?

Someone please explain this to me, because my heads starting to hurt.

Ok. Here is one of the conspiracy theories I got booted from ThinkProgress for posting.

In 2000 the cyberboom was slowing down. Many dotcoms were falling by the wayside, and the economy was slowing.

The incoming republican White House did not want to be blamed for the slowing economy and being stupid, they had no good ideas on how to stimulate economic growth.

In fact, all Bush could think to do with the humongous surplus Clinton handed him, was to hand it out in small, insignificant amounts of 300 and 600 dollar giveaways.

Kinda like 100 million people all holding the winning lottery ticket. There was just not enough to go around.

Anyway people were starting to blame Bush, and his approval rating had tanked into the low 40's and high 30's.

Then, one of them thought, Hey, war always stimulates the economy.

    And suddenly 911 happened.

Bush then skyrocketed in the polls and the economy was naturally driven back up thanks to the recently unleashed war machine.

    Think about it people.

After all you know about him, do you really think they're above falling two buildings if they thought it would help them somehow?

Now, there's been a lot of talk lately on Capitol Hill about how impeachment should be "off the table." We're told that it's time to look ahead - not back...

Can you imagine how far that argument would go for the defense at an arraignment on charges of grand larceny, or large-scale distribution of methamphetamines? How about the arranging of a contract killing on a pregnant mother? "Indictment should be off the table." Or "Let's look forward, not backward." Or "We can't afford another failed defendant."

Our country has a legal system, not of men and women, but of laws. Why then are we so willing to put inconvenient provisions of the U.S. constitution and federal law "off the table?" Our greatest concern right now should be what to put ON the table. Unless we're going to have one set of laws for the powerful and another set for those who can't afford fancy lawyers, then truth matters to everyone. And accountability is a matter of human and legal principle. If we're going to continue wagging our fingers at the disadvantaged transgressors, then I suggest we be consistent. If truth and accountability can be stretched into sham concepts, we may as well open the gates of all our jails and prisons, where, by the way, there are more people behind bars than any other country in the world. One in every 32 American adults is behind bars, on probation, or on parole as we stand here tonight.

Which is to say that, globally, the United States is number one at demanding accountability and backing up that demand with imprisonment. But, when it comes to our president, vice president, secretary of state, former secretary of defense...this insistence on accountability vanishes. All of a sudden, what's past is prologue. And we're just "forward-looking."

On January 11, 2003, I made an appearance on Larry King's show following my first trip to Iraq. I suggested that every American mother and father sit down with a scrap of paper and pencil and scribble the following words:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. So-and-so -- We regret to inform you that your son or daughter so-and-so, was killed in action in Iraq.

I then asked that those mothers and fathers complete that letter in whatever way might comfort them should they receive it. When one considers what a bewildered continuation of those words a parent might attempt to write today, it seems inconceivable that this country could've ever bought into this war. Who were those mothers and fathers believing in?!

    Fuck George Bush
    Category: News and Politics

Pearl Harbor day has come and gone again. This particular passing of the day that memorializes the Japanese attack on American soil happened to be the 65th anniversary of the event.

It comes to my mind every year because in addition to that devastating attack something else happened on December 7th. Exactly 30 years after the attack I was born.

After reflecting on my 35th birthday and in between running around preparing for Christmas I think about the fact that there have really only been two serious attacks on our soil in the 20th and 21st centuries. One was Pearl Harbor and the other was the attack on the World Trade Center.

Then I think about what happened as a result of those attacks.

The final move in the retaliation against the Japanese was when Harry S. Truman ordered a total of 3 atom bombs to be detonated over Japan. Lord knows why the first one didn't do the trick (I'm not historian so I've nary a clue), but dropping those bombs was one of the most viscous and nasty attacks in the history of man. As a result, it sent a clear message to not only Japan, but the entire world:

Don't attack the United States of America.

We don't take kindly to it and will reign down horrible terror on you if you try.

That message lasted for over 50 years. But time has a way of washing away everything from mountains to civilizations and even to memories.

So on September 11th, 2001, a group of terrorists out of the Middle East decided to try to attack the United States of America again. Like the Japanese, it was an air attack. But unlike Pearl Harbor, where Japanese pilots dropped bombs on our harbor and our Navy, these terrorists hijacked commercial planes and flew them into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

Why did they do it? Did they not get the message that when you fuck with the United States we retaliate tenfold? Did they not remember Pearl Harbor and the fate of Japan? Maybe they didn't. Or maybe they did? Maybe they really didn't give a shit. Maybe their religious beliefs were so strong that they didn't give a care about the ramifications of their actions. After all, they were doing the Lord's work so how could it be wrong?

Regardless of their logic, they did indeed attack the United States of America. The gauntlet was thrown down again. It was time for another moment of truth.

It was time for our President to make an example of them with a retaliatory strike so incomprehensibly vicious that the world would again be reminded that it is very unwise to come after us on our own soil.

The only problem was that our Harry S. Truman was a man named George W. Bush. A half-wit that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and his head firmly planted up his ass. And instead of unleashing the most horrifying weapon known to man upon our enemy, he chose to mount his own version of Vietnam on a man and a country that had no relation to the attack itself. To make it even more sinful, he led many of his constituents to believe that his personal vendetta to show his dad that he could beat the man he could not was instead the war on the very terrorists that destroyed thousands of American civilians.

    George's message to the world:

If you attack the United States, we will deploy our under equipped forces to fight an economic and political war on someone else.

Thanks, George. Thanks for sending out an invitation for every crackpot in the world to attempt to shoot us full of holes.

George Bush is incompetent and ridiculously stupid. He should be ashamed of himself that he has dishonored the most important office in our country. He does not even deserve to hold the jocks of men like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Harry S. Truman. He should be running a fucking gas station in Midland, TX or more accurately he should be in prison somewhere on drug charges getting ass raped by all sorts of vile criminals.

And because of his incompetence I am not going to be surprised at all if we do, indeed, get attacked by someone else on our own soil at some time in the near future. We are not scary anymore so why would anyone be afraid of us?

We will have another presidential election in 2008. Please, for the sake of your children, do not vote for a complete and total fucking idiot. Don't vote for some punk ass bitch that has strings attached to his arms so his handlers can make him wiggle and dance when required. Vote for a person that is a true leader. Vote for someone with above average intelligence. Vote for someone who can make a tough decision on their own. Vote for someone who will analyze a situation but will also know when it is time to stop thinking and start acting. Vote for a true American hero.

I bet this poll won't get any coverage. In fact, I couldn't even find coverage of it in Newsweek itself, aside from the linked press release.

Clinton's up 50-43 over McCain, 48-47 over Three Wives Giuliani, 58-32 over Mitt Romney.

McCain beats Obama 45-43, Giuliani beats Obama 47-44, Obama beats Romney 55-25.

Early polls like this don't really mean much but they do drive news coverage. Unless they're just ignored of course.

To assert that what a person chooses to believe is synonymous with his genetically determined race, would appear quite insane (or at least silly depending upon one's generousity) to a person with normal cognitive activity.

However, you will note that all the liberals on this site heartily endorse this lunacy. Actually what we have is a representative example of the essential belief which separates Liberals from Conservatives.

Conservatives believe that freedom is extremely important because it enables a person to exercise his God-given free will, and that the very ability to make decisions, is what separates mankind from the rest of creation.

In contrast, Liberals believe that a person is merely an advanced animal -- sort of a clever walking fish. Liberals believe that a person has very little control over his life, and this is the reason that big government must step in to "fix" things, although the opposite result usually happens.

This is the reason that liberals place very little value on innocent human life. Indeed if a person is merely an advanced animal, a potential human is a big yawn.

This is the reason that many wealthy liberals pay their clinical psychologists thousands of dollars year after year to assure them that all their problems were really the fault of their parents -- never the result of their own poor choices.

This is the reason that liberals find it reasonable to believe that merely owning a firearm puts a normal adult at risk. If a person does not possess the ability to exercise free will, then indeed he may decide to just start shooting folks randomly merely because the gun is available and he has no choice -- the gun is in charge.

This is the reason that liberals are more likely to gamble and play the lottery, rather than use their innate talents to become wealthy. Liberals view wealthy people as lucky winners of "life's lottery", not as productive people whose wealth typically results from their contributions to society.

This is the reason that liberals love to raise taxes to punish wealthy people and are very concerned about the "gap" between the earnings of "poor" people and "rich" people. Liberals do not see that folks are likely to move through different income brackets throughout their lives, and that each of us has control over how much we choose to earn.

This is the reason that Liberals are more likely to believe in horoscopes. A belief in fate is consistent with the belief that a person really has about as little control over his own life as a jellyfish floating in the ocean.

This is the reason that Liberals normally favor going easy on criminals. If a person is not responsible for his own actions then the crime must be someone else's fault ... the victim's or society's.

Liberals emphasize the group to which a person belongs. The group is the important thing; the individuals within the group are merely interchangeable objects.

This is the reason that Liberals are obsessed with race and see racists everywhere. The worst betrayal for a Liberal is a black Conservative, who deserves to be viciously verbally abused at every opportunity. For example, liberals attempted to destroy Clarence Thomas in his quest for the Supreme Court.

Conservatives believe that the content of a person's character is more important than the color of his skin or other superficial characteristics over which we have no control.

Liberals place much value upon their own feelings not logic or results. This is the reason that liberals consider government welfare programs to be marvelous success stories although the result was to rob people of self-respect, destroy families, and doom generations to squalor. Liberals were able to feel good about themselves because they were taking money from bad groups and giving it to the good groups.

Conservatives do not consider it to be "racist" to criticise unhealthy Islamic beliefs, any more than we consider it to be "racist" for Liberals to routinely demonize Christians.

Conservatives believe that each of us has control over his own life to a remarkable degree. Obviously we choose our own religious beliefs as we decide everything else in life.

Conservatives like Ronald Reagan supported people Like Ferdinand Marcos, during his crack down to try to stay in power AGAINST the will of the people.

Reagan supported the apartheid Government of South Africa which denied freedom to the majority of it's people.

Reagan supported Saddam in Iraq and we KNOW all about his record on Freedom. Saddam's guilty verdict is from the Time Reagan considered Saddam one of his closest allies in the region.

Conservatives Like Reagan Bush 41 and bush 43 consider the Saudis close allies, but they have one of the most repressive records in regards to freedom in the last 50 years.

Conservatives like Kissinger who advocated supporting the repressive governments of South Vietnam, the Phillipines, Samosa, Pinochet, the Argentine Military hunta, the Shah in his represive activities...

Social Security is a massive loser -- the worst conceivable investment.

Also government bureaucrats do not hafta participate in SS because they have their own, much better retirement system. Interesting huh?

Social Security is going bankrupt because it is merely an income transfer program from working folks to retired folks.

Meanwhile goverment borrows, all SS contributions for pennies on the dollar, to spend on whatever they want. This is what algore called the SS "lockbox" to create the illusion that your SS contributions still actually exist somewhere.

Conservatives advocated a modest change in SS to give folks more control over their retirement, but they were demonized by libs. SS is merely another scheme to buy votes and scare old folks into voting dhimmicrat.

Individuals could earn far more on their own, but we don't have a choice. Again liberals do not believe that people need choices; government knows best and treats us like children.

This is perhaps the favorite liberal canard. It is such a big lie that it must be repeated endlessly. Most people probably believe it, but those who bother to study the facts do not.

The myth of the evil racist Republicans! This has been a most effective smear perpetrated by the democrats; the classic example of turnspeak – the big lie. Thus by demonizing Republicans, the left assures the blind support of minorities, who then believe they owe the democrats for saving them.

The Republican party in the U.S. emerged around 1855 led by Abraham Lincoln -- you know the guy who freed the slaves? Meanwhile democrats led by the "solid south", home of the former slaveholders, continued to oppress blacks throughout the country.

On Feb. 10, 1964 H.R.7152 passed the House. Of the 420 members who voted, 290 supported the civil rights bill and 130 opposed it. Republicans favored the bill 138 to 34; Democrats supported it 152-96. So, in other words, 80% of Republicans supported it, but only 61% of Democrats did.

What the democrats did to Bush in the 2000 election was unspeakable. The men who murdered James Byrd by dragging him behind a pick-up truck in Texas were condemned to death or life imprisonment by Texas courts. But apparently death wasn’t sufficient punishment for the democrats, and their disgusting buddies the naacp, who ran TV ads accusing Bush of racism because he failed to support “hate crimes” legislation.

Then the "honorable" congressman charlie rangel attacked Republican tax cuts as pure race hatred. "It's not 'spic' or 'nigger' anymore," Rangel growled. "They say, 'Let's cut taxes.'" Outrageous! Incoherent! Simply OUTRAGEOUS! How is this guy still in office? Could a Republican have gotten away with this hateful slander? You already know the answer.

How did the democrats manage to convince minorities that it is actually the republicans who are the racists? Democrats are the party of special rights for certain "protected groups". Their favorite technique is "affirmative action" which is just a euphemism for discrimination against white males most of whom weren't even born when blacks were being discriminated against.

However, Republicans distain "group rights". Republicans consistently champion freedom for the rugged individual and his rights as set forth in the U.S. Constitution. They prefer to judge an individual for the content of his character, not the color of his skin or other superficial attributes.

The we had the spectacle of democrat murderer ted kennedy and racist former kkk kleagle robert byrd once grilling Condi Rice about her integrity. Travesty on parade. Incredible.

Meanwhile, Republicans celebrate any time they can find a black person with Conservative beliefs. There are some giants like Larry Elder, J.C. Watts, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, and many more. And there's another named Clarence Thomas, who may soon become the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 1945, the elderly were the single biggest race of poor people in this country.

By 1970, they were the richest. Social Security changed that. Medicare changed them from being the sickest (after infants) to one of the healthiest age groups.

Oddly enough, thanks to fascist Republicans, infant mortality remains a pressing issue in America. Gee...can't imagine why. Can anyone else? Mike? Clif? :-)

    HERE IT IS AGAIN;

It was the southern Democrats who fought to retain slavery and later imposed the Jim Crow laws.

Like former democrat Jesse Helms, who turned republican, In 1970, Helms, prodded by a daughter, finally left the Democratic Party to become a Republican.

Former democrat Strom Thurman who turned republican remember him, he ran as a Dixiecrat to protest Truman's integration of the Army, and THEN became a republican.

Like former democrat Ronald Reagan who turned republican, when John F Kennedy won the presidency of the US.

Or Billy Tauzin who turned from the democratic party to the republican party, after 1994.

Or Jimmy Hayes, who changed from the democratic party to be a republican

Or Howell Heflin who became a republican who USED to be a democrat.

Or Richard Craig Shelby who switched from the democratic party to the republican party in 1994.

Or William Thad Cochran who switched from the democratic party to be a republican after the 60's.

Or William Philip "Phil" Gramm (born July 8, 1942, in Fort Benning, Georgia) served as a Democratic Congressman (1978-1983), a Republican Congressman (1983-1985) and a Republican Senator from Texas (1985-2002).

James O. "Jim" McCrery, III,an aid to Buddy romer as a democrat but switch in the late 1990's

Walter Beaman Jones, Jr. switched parties and won in the 3rd district in the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress.

Floyd Davidson Spence on April 14, 1962, Spence became the first elected official at any level in South Carolina to switch to the Republican Party.

Charles Elson "Buddy" Roemer, III switched to the Republican Party before the 1991 election, apparently at the urging of Bush White House Chief of Staff John Sununu.

James Allison "Jimmy" Hayes He was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1986. Hayes left the Democratic party on December 1, 1995 and joined the Republican party.

Richard Hugh Baker, who also switched partied to become a republican in 1986

Herbert Leon "Sonny" Callahan another democrat, When retiring representative Jack Edwards requested that Callahan run for his seat as a Republican, Callahan switched and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1984 from a Mobile-based district.

Duncan McLauchlin "Lauch" Faircloth, who switched parties in 1992 and served in the senate as a republican son.

Trent Lott who was a democrat as a youth but with the civil rights legislation switched parties as part of the republican party's southern strategy.

BTW son this was the trend,

Lott's party switch was part of a growing trend in the South. During the 1960s, cracks had begun to appear in the Democrats' "Solid South", as most white segregationists became more willing to vote Republican after the national Democratic Party strongly endorsed racial integration. For example, Barry Goldwater carried Mississippi by winning an unheard-of 87 percent of the popular vote even as he was routed nationally.

Jeese Foole, half of your republican party is the former democrats you rail about for their stance on civil rights

Must SUCK to realize what you use as a smear piece against democrats is empty since a hell of a lot of those former democrats are NOW republicans, especially the former democrats from the south, who are NOW republicans from the south son.

Deal with the fact those YOU rail against son are NOW repugs and proud of it son. They formed the BASE of the party son, the former southern democrats who opposed civil rights but then became republicans based on Nixon's southern strategy which Lee Atwater used in the 1988 election.

You cherry pick a fact but refuse to acknowledge the way history proceeded to the present, if that VOTE were held TODAY the opposition would be repugs LIKE you son, they oppose much of what is in the Civil Right Bill even today and vote to take away provisions of it.

The repugs are BASED on the former southern democrats you rail against son. Most of the Southern congressmen and Senators who were of voting age in the 50's and 60's were democrats in their youth and as the KKK moved from the democratic tent to the repug tent, they followed right along ......

  154. Surging To Defeat In Iraq

    W. Patrick Lang and Ray McGovern
    December 18, 2006

    W. Patrick Lang is a retired Army colonel who served with Special Forces in Vietnam, as an instructor at West Point, and as Defense Intelligence Officer for the Middle East. Ray McGovern was also an Army infantry/intelligence officer before his 27-year career as a CIA analyst. Both are with Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS).

As Robert Gates takes the helm at the Pentagon today, he is probably already aware that Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush are resolute in their decision to stay the course in Iraq (without using those words) for the next two years. What he probably does not realize is that the U.S. military is about to commit hara-kiri.

The media are abuzz with trial balloons with official leaks that President George W. Bush is about to approve a “surge” in U.S. troop strength in Iraq by tens of thousands. At the same time, surge advocate Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., just back from a brief visit to the Green Zone with fellow surgers John McCain, R-Ariz., and Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., has warned that “the amount of troops will make no difference” if Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki avoids taking “bold” moves. The three pretend to be unaware that the most important move for which they pressed—breaking with radical Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr—would amount to political suicide for Maliki.

Meanwhile, back at the Sunday talk shows, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who owes his position to the popular revolt in November against the war, said he can “go along” with a surge, but only for two to three months and only as part of a broader strategy to bring combat forces home by early 2008. Meanwhile, says Reid, Democrats will “give the military anything they want.”

Can Reid be oblivious to the reality that this has to do with the next two years—not the next two months? Former Army vice chief of staff Gen. Jack Keane, one of the anointed retired generals who have Bush’s ear, is urging him to send 30,000 to 40,000 more troops and has already dismissed the possibility of a time-frame shorter than one and a half years. What seems clear is that the president is determined that the war not be lost while he is in office. But events are moving too fast for that. It was not quite the way he meant it, but Bush has gotten one thing right; there will indeed be no “graceful exit.” That goes in spades, if he sends still more troops.

    Oxymoron

A generation from now, our grandchildren will have difficulty writing history papers on this oxymoronic debate on how to surge/withdraw our troops into/from the quagmire in Iraq. Historians will have just as much trouble, especially those given to Tolstoy’s theory that history is ruled by an inexorable determinism in which the free choice of major historical figures plays a minimal role. Tolstoy died before events put into perspective the legacy of Tsar Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat [Decider] Of All The Russias, and his Vice President/éminence grise, Rasputin.

Judging from President Bush’s behavior in recent weeks, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that he may be no more stable than Nicholas II. And if retired Col. Larry Wilkerson, Colin Powell’s top aide at the State Department, is right in saying that Bush still has the “vice president whispering in his ear every moment,” we have an unhappy but apt historical analogy.

But, you protest, the generals most intimately involved in Iraq, John Abizaid and George Casey, and Army Chief of Staff Peter Schoomaker have made no secret of their strong reservations about sending large numbers of additional troops. That is correct, but also irrelevant. Because, as was the case in the Vietnam War, our top generals have long since morphed into careerists and politicians. They have become accustomed to looking up for the next reward—and not down at the troops who bear the brunt of their acquiescence in political/military decisions that make no sense.

But what about Senators Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy—and Colin Powell, and even Donald Rumsfeld, all of whom spoke out yesterday against a sizable surge in troop strength in Iraq? No problem. Cheney/Bush is the sole “decider.”

This does not mean that Defense Secretary Robert Gates should renege on his promise to visit the troops in Iraq and hear the generals out. It does mean that by the time he gets there, the generals can be expected to be already “on board with the program,” as they say. And taking issue with “deciders” has never been Gates’ strong suit.

What Gates may not realize, but the generals should, is that once an “all or nothing” offensive like the “surge” contemplated has begun, there is no turning back. It will be “victory” over the insurgents and the Shia militias or palpable defeat, recognizable by all in Iraq and across the world.

    Stalingrad on the Tigris

A “surge” of the size possible under current constraints on U.S. forces will not turn the tide in the guerrilla war. Reinforcement of Bagdad several thousand U.S. troops last summer simply brought on more violence. Those who believe still more troops will bring “victory” are living in a dangerous dream world and need to wake up.

Moreover, major reinforcement would commit the US Army and Marine Corps to decisive combat in which there are no more strategic reserves to be sent to the front. It will be a matter of win or die in the attempt. In that situation, everyone in uniform on the ground will commit every ounce of their being to a hope of “victory,” and few measures will be shrunk from.

Analogies come to mind: the Bulge, Stalingrad, the Battle of Algiers. It will be total war with all the likelihood of excesses and mass casualties that come with total war.

To take up such a strategy and force our armed forces into it would be an immoral course of action, both for our troops and for the thousands more Iraqis bound to die.

Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., spoke for many of us last Thursday on the Senate floor:

“I, for one, am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a policy that has our soldiers patrolling the same streets in the same way, being blown up by the same bombs day after day. That is absurd. It may even be criminal. I cannot support that anymore.”

Yesterday, when George Stephanopoulos asked Smith what he meant by “criminal,” he replied:

“I said it. You can use any adjective you want, George. But I have long believed in a military context, when you do the same thing over and over again, without a clear strategy for victory, at the expense of your young people in arms, that is dereliction. That is deeply immoral.”

If adopted, the “surge” strategy will be even worse than that. It will be something we will spend a generation living down.

These two Patriots and Life long Military Men who understand what would happen if Bush follows this disastrous course in Iraq have said it very well. 30-50,000 troops would not change much on the ground, but allow the insurgent and radical militias MORE targets to attack, and in TWO years time we would be almost exactly where we are NOW but with around 2500 more deaths of young American soldiers, 2500 more military funerals and 2500 families who suffered a loss so Bush ET Al does not have to admit their mistakes.
This would be combined with about 15,000 more wounded soldiers, some permanently. Soldiers who would have to carry the burdens of their wounds so the neo-cons can say they gave it the old college try before Bush left office. So the reichwing can FEEL like big bad Americans for a little while longer before the diplomatic talks begin or worse, the US forces are fighting to escape Iraq, and losing large numbers of lives , larger numbers of wounded and billions in lost and destroyed equipment is the fight to get out of Iraq. If the Shiite cut the southern supply routes, the fuel the army and marines run their operations on could become scarce, and the troops would have to fight their way out through the southern main supply routes (MSR) the very same routes they fought their way in on.

People like Bush, Cheney and Fred Kagan who is proposing this plan have never served on active duty, never served in a hostile environment and ran from combat when they had the option, and now they want to play military genius with other peoples lives, since they have done so good so far.

F*ck em, bring the troops HOME NOW and send the college repukes and neo-cons who hawk for this war if they want to try it for another two years. Other wise the gutless chicken hawks like these a$$holes should Shut The F*ck UP, they have done enough damage this century.

    As another American Patriot who went to war learned the harsh lessons of war on the battle field and came home to question the legitimacy of that war once asked;

How do you ask a man to be the last man to DIE for a mistake?

Today Bush ET Al are trying to repeat history, and ask 30-50,000 men and women to do just that. Just so they do not have to admit Iraq was a mistake any more than Nixon wanted to admit Vietnam was a mistake from 1954 when the US got involved and HE was Vice President, to the time he was running illegal operations inside Cambodia. It was criminal back then, it is criminal NOW, and the legacy of the Bush Administration will be judged as more corrupt and worse than even Nixon. No surge of troops can save Bush from his legacy. However he will not stop trying to save it, but in the end kill thousands of more troops which will condemn him worse in the end. Nixon never was compared to Hitler's insane demand they hold Stalingrad at all costs. However Bush is starting to approach that in Iraq, and history will be no kinder to Bush than it has Hitler.

Either you got what you asked for, or were not allowed to serve on active duty even though you asked for it.

  183. So, now, put up or shut up, Fawnbot. Find an expert to rebut the American Anthropological Association, or you can simply admit that you were uninformed. Your choice, DUNCE
    -PP

Yes thank you, Fluffy. Human life is all about the capability to make choices. The choices I make have absolutely nothing to do with my "race", over which I exercise no control.

The term race distinguishes one population of an animal species (including human) from another of the same subspecies. Many regard race as a social construct. Others think it has genetic basis.

The most widely used human racial categories are based on visible traits (especially skin color, facial features and hair texture), genes, and self-identification.

    -Wikipedia

Ultimately race is unimportant. Superficial characteristics such as race and gender are irrelevant to most discussions about human potential. Society should recognize and deal with each person as an individual and not as a member of some arbitrary group.

However, it is libs who are hung up on race because they have found that divisive language about race has enabled them to keep minorities on the plantation and voting primarily dhimmicrat.

Constantly screaming "racist" also enables them to feel good about themselves by projecting their own racism upon others. This is what PP has predictably demonstrated with ugly racial slurs:

Hey, it wasn't me who said all dry cleaners are owned by chinks... -PP

Bogus charges of "racism" also enable some liberals to earn an extremely good living by shaking down corporations for millions, which is jesse jackson's occupation.

Libs also brand certain "races" as good while others are bad. Obviously fluffy would never consider himself a "racist" for criticizing a member of the American "race" or the Christian "race" or the white race.

As a member of the Film Actors Guild, fluffy is a wannabe "actor" whose full time "job", complete with gestapo dialect, is smearing Conservatives as nazi "racists". Actors get to pretend to be something they're not; fluffy gets to pretend that he's a very good actor.

I'm sure you would recognize him in many, many performances... Okay two anyway. In Deliverance that was he, oinking like a pig. He was also an extra in Broken Back Mtn. He played one of the more attractive sheep, and was an off-set love interest of one of the stars.

Sure you do. You can choose, for example, to convert to Judaism and become a Jew and therefore be of the Jewish race, just like the American Anthropological Association says you can.

In your case, you can choose to come out of the closet and admit your homosexuality, and become part of the gay race that the Nazis tried to exterminate.

Which raises an interesting point: if someone, say Al Qaeda, came here and systematically exterminated all Americans, they'd be guilty of "genocide"

    Genocide...a legal term...hmmmm...

gen·o·cide –noun the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.

Ohmy. The eradication of a racial, political, or cultural group!

Well, there it is, DUNCE, in black and white and codified into law. Cultural group = racial group = national group = political group.
