Last night I went to the Kentucky Derby Prelude Party benefitting "Blessings in a Backpack" to feed children who don't have enough food on weekends, who are in the school lunch program. It was red carpet at the London Hotel in WeHo and had the best time! Ran into two of my favorite stars - Kate Flannery and Oscar Nunez from one of my favorite shows starring Steve Carrell The Office. Kate Flannery is hilarious in The Lampshades at Improv Olympic in Hollywood - where I "filmed the "Kelsey Grammer - Bill Zucker Comedy Hour" with Scott Baio from Happy Days last year.

My friend says "For our family, Christmas is the one time of year when we can count on smiling faces, bright lights, awesome gifts, giant twinkling trees, family reunions, childish games and believing in that old man that you know does exist. Christmas is the time when dreams come true. If there is no joyous way to give a festive gift, give love away. May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through! Merry Christmas to you and your family May God watch over each and every one of you, and grace you all with love and peace.

Have a wonderful holiday, no matter what you believe in or don't believe in. Love and the Golden Rule are universal laws. I send love, peace, and blessings to you ALL.

I pray for peace on earth, and a new beginning, where the old fundamentalist religions fall away. Old, primitive archaic "us versus them" thought -- the ones that judge must stop judging others. The overly religious people who cannot stand to "live and let live" are the only enemy any of us have.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Today I was walking the dog behind Trader Joe’s and I passed a shady alcove bordering the alley, in the center of which was a large tree. I peeked into the bushes, and saw a grocery bag. This seemed like a private place for a homeless person to rest, but just as I was thinking this, I glimpsed a pair of shoes attached to legs in camouflage pants, standing behind the tree, hiding inside the tree — as if they were hoping not to be seen, trying to blend in with the shrubs. I could hear the owner of this pair of legs trying desperately not to breathe. Was it a homeless person, or just someone who was trying to go to the bathroom in the bushes?

As I passed by, I said to the bush: “God Bless you.” I kept walking. Then I realized that I was holding in my hand two sticks of Mozarella string cheese, so I circled back to the bush and offered it to the person hiding in the trees. “Would you like a piece of cheese? It’s wrapped in plastic, it has its own wrapper," I said. A woman’s voice, shaking, rang out, “No, no thank you.” Then, the voice said: “You're very sweet.” I could see a pair of glasses and dark hair through the leaves.

I walked away and said, “You are sweet too.”

Then I started crying; I couldn't stop. The same way I cried on Sunday when our church pastor talked to us about the homeless people and how desperately sad they are. It has been dawning on me more and more how truly tragic it is to be homeless — and especially to be a homeless child. Can you imagine what it’s like to have no place to rest, no privacy in going to the “bathroom”... no clean, safe, or soft place to lay one’s head. No place without bugs or flies, mosquitos or rats… no place to get dressed, to bathe, or to bring friends home for ice cream. No place to do homework. No place to have dinner or play Monopoly or take piano lessons. No dinner. God bless these poor lost little souls.

My favorite charities are Feed the Children, Imagine L.A., Union Rescue Mission and Candy Christmas" "Under the Bridge Mission" which you can read about in recent threads.

* Please note that these matters do, indeed, precipitate homeless episodes; however, the underlying cause of extended family homelessness is simply the lack of affordable housing. Struggling parents in low paying jobs and the decreasing access to available Section 8 or other low-income housing is ultimately a losing situation. Imagine LA's current programming does not include the development of low-income housing, but we applaud and encourage those efforts.

Los Angeles, which boasts the world's fifth largest economy, since 2005, has become the Homeless Capital of our country. Currently, at least approximately 8,000 family units, representing more than 18,000 children and youth occupy our city.

The journey begins with the inability to pay rent and then leads to eviction, forcing the family into motels, SRO hotels, homeless shelters, friends and relatives, or, ultimately, the streets. The typical homeless Mom is trying to survive without adequate housing, childcare, and access to support services. Her children are often uneducated; shuffled from one school to another due to the transient nature of no permanent housing. Homeless children, more often than not, drop out of school, fail, or join gangs.

The most innocent victims of family homelessness are the children. They are the ones who suffer the most, not knowing where their next meal, bed, or school is. The following transcription of an eleven year old homeless girl, speaks for itself.

Look UP and everytime you feel a pain in the back, claim your dominion over your body. Also, rout out any emotional "back" pain -- anything in the past, behind you, "in back of you" that you are holding onto. Old resentments, give them up to the universe and ask out loud to be FREE.

My sister had a problem with her back and her feet -- and she worked with a metaphysical healer and homeopath on all this stuff. Now she does slow stretches in Yoga class and prays for the world, helps others, gets her mind off self and it's working. She had "arthritis in the feet" when she lived upstairs from a cruel neighbor who hated gays (my sister is gay) and suddenly realized she was "walking on eggshells" and her feet were affected!

"This is not a traditional war story," Gbowee, 39, wrote in her autobiography 'Mighty Be Our Powers: How Sisterhood, Prayer and Sex Changed a Nation at War'.

"It is about an army of women in white standing up when no one else would - unafraid because the worst things imaginable had already happened to us. It is about how we found the moral clarity, persistence, and bravery to raise our voices against war and restore sanity to our land."

She shares the 2011 peace prize with her country's president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and another woman peace activist, Yemen's Tawakkul Karman.

Africa's first democratically elected female president, a Liberian campaigner against rape and a woman who stood up to Yemen's autocratic regime won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in recognition of the importance of women's rights in the spread of global peace.

The 10 million kronor ($1.5-million) award was split three ways between Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, women's rights activist Leymah Gbowee from the same African country and democracy activist Tawakkul Karman of Yemen — the first Arab woman to win the prize.

(AP) OSLO, Norway — Leymah Gbowee confronted armed forces in Liberia to demand that they stop using rape as a weapon. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa's first woman to win a free presidential election. Tawakkul Karman began pushing for change in Yemen long before the Arab Spring. They share a commitment to women's rights in regions where oppression is common, and on Friday they shared the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored women for the first time in seven years, and in selecting Karman it also recognized the Arab Spring movement championed by millions of often anonymous activists from Tunisia to Syria.

Prize committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said it would have been difficult to identify all the movement's leaders, and that the committee was making an additional statement by selecting Karman to represent their cause.

"We have included the Arab Spring in this prize, but we have put it in a particular context," Jagland told reporters. "Namely, if one fails to include the women in the revolution and the new democracies, there will be no democracy."

Karman is the first Arab woman ever to win the peace prize, which includes a 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award that will be divided among the winners. No woman or sub-Saharan African had won the prize since 2004, when the committee honored Wangari Maathai of Kenya, who mobilized poor women to fight deforestation by planting trees.

"I am very, very happy about this prize," said Karman, who has been campaigning for the ouster of Yemen's authoritarian President Ali Abdullah Saleh since 2006. "I give the prize to the youth of revolution in Yemen and the Yemeni people."

Sirleaf, 72, won Liberia's presidential election in 2005 and is credited with helping the country emerge from an especially brutal civil war. She is running for re-election Tuesday in what has been a tough campaign, but Jagland said that did not enter into the committee's decision to honor her.

"This gives me a stronger commitment to work for reconciliation," Sirleaf said Friday from her home in Monrovia, the capital. She said Liberians should be proud that both she and Gbowee were honored.

"Leymah Gbowee worked very hard with women in Liberia from all walks of life to challenge the dictatorship, to sit in the sun and in the rain advocating for peace," Sirleaf said. "I believe we both accept this on behalf of the Liberian people and the credit goes to them."

Gbowee, who took a flight to New York on Friday, said she was shocked to learn she had won.

"Everything I do is an act of survival for myself, for the group of people that I work with," she said. "So if you are surviving, you don't take you survival strategies or tactics as anything worth of a Nobel."

One of the first people she told was a fellow airline passenger.

"Sat by a guy for five hours on the flight and we never spoke to each other, but I had to tap him and say, 'Sir, I just won the Nobel Peace Prize.'"

Gbowee, 39, has long campaigned for the rights of women and against rape, organizing Christian and Muslim women to challenge Liberia's warlords. In 2003, she led hundreds of female protesters — the "women in white" — through Monrovia to demand swift disarmament of fighters who continued to prey on women even though a peace deal ending 14 years of near-constant civil war had been reached months earlier.

"You're supposed to be our liberators, but if you finish everyone, who will you rule?" Gbowee asked rebel official Sekou Fofana during one march that year.

Gbowee was honored by the committee for mobilizing women "across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring an end to the long war in Liberia, and to ensure women's participation in elections."

Gbowee works in Ghana's capital as the director of Women Peace and Security Network Africa. The group's website says she is a mother of five.

She said that although she had never considered herself worthy of the prize, "women have important roles in peace and security issues and I think that this is an acknowledgment of that."

"The world is functioning on one side of its brain" because women's skills and intelligence are "not being used to advance the cause of the world," she said.

The Harvard-educated Sirleaf took a different path toward change in Liberia, a country created to settle freed American slaves in 1847.

She worked her way through college in the United States by mopping floors and waiting tables. Jailed at home and exiled abroad, she lost to warlord Charles Taylor in elections in 1997 but earned the nickname "Iron Lady." A rebellion forced Taylor from power in 2003, and Sirleaf emerged victorious in a landslide vote in 2005.

Even on a continent long plagued with violence, the civil war in Liberia stood out for its cruelty. Taylor's soldiers ate the hearts of slain enemies and even decorated checkpoints with human entrails.

The conflict had a momentary lull when Taylor ran for office in 1997 and was elected president. Many say they voted for him because they were afraid of the chaos that would follow if he lost.

Though Liberia is more peaceful today, Sirleaf has critics at home who say she hasn't done enough to restore roads, electricity and other infrastructure devastated during the civil strife. Her opponents have accused her of buying votes and using government funds to campaign for re-election, charges that her camp denies.

Liberia's truth and reconciliation commission recommended that she be barred from public office for previously giving up to $10,000 to a rebel group headed by Taylor. Liberia's legislature has not approved that recommendation, and Sirleaf has said that if she should apologize for anything it is for "being fooled" by Taylor in the past.

African and international luminaries welcomed Sirleaf's honor. Many had gathered in Cape Town, South Africa on Friday to celebrate Nobel peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu's 80th birthday.

"Who? Johnson Sirleaf? The president of Liberia? Oooh," said Tutu, who won the peace prize in 1984 for his nonviolent campaign against white racist rule in South Africa. "She deserves it many times over. She's brought stability to a place that was going to hell."

U2 frontman Bono — who has figured in peace prize speculation in previous years — called Sirleaf an "extraordinary woman, a force of nature and now she has the world recognize her in this great, great, great way."

Karman is a mother of three from Taiz, a city in southern Yemen that is a hotbed of resistance against Saleh's regime. The daughter of a former legal affairs minister under Saleh, she has been dubbed "Iron Woman, "The Mother of Revolution" and "The Spirit of the Yemeni Revolution" by fellow protesters.

Long an advocate for human rights and freedom of expression in Yemen, she mounted an initiative to organize Yemeni youth groups and opposition into a national council.

On Jan. 23, Karman was arrested at her home. After widespread protests against her detention — it is rare for Yemen women to be taken to jail — she was released early the next day.

During a February rally in Sanaa, she told the AP: "We will retain the dignity of the people and their rights by bringing down the regime."

Karman now lives in the capital, Sanaa. She is a journalist and member of the Islamic party Islah and heads the human rights group Women Journalists without Chains.

Jagland noted that Karman, 32, is a member of a political party linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist movement sometimes viewed with suspicion in the West. Jagland, however, called the Brotherhood "an important part" of the Arab Spring.
Yemen's uprising has been one of the least successful so far, failing to unseat Saleh as the country descends into failed state status and armed groups take increasingly central roles.

BHHS Student Dies After Collapsing on Campus Friday

Hundreds of people attend a memorial service Sunday at the high school for a 15-year-old girl everyone loved.

A sophomore at Beverly Hills High School collapsed on campus Friday morning and died shortly afterward.

Elena Natanzadeh, who graduated from Beverly Vista in 2010, fainted on the stairs adjacent to the swim gym. She died of an undetermined ailment.

There are conflicting reports as to whether she had a heart condition and/or suffered a blot clot after recent knee surgery. Students told Patch that she had been complaining about feeling dizzy, lost consciousness on the stairs and hit her head. Several students tried unsuccessfully to administer CPR.

Administrators at the Beverly Hills Unified School District, under direction from the family, did not identify the student nor release any specific details of her death. BHUSD Superintendent Gary Woods confirmed the news Sunday morning via an email and automated phone call to BHHS families.

“I am writing this morning to inform you that … a Beverly Hills High School student collapsed on campus Friday morning due to what appeared to be a medical condition,” Woods said on Sunday morning.   “First responders provided immediate support and the student was transported to a local hospital within minutes. Unfortunately, medical personnel were unable to revive the student. The family has asked for privacy and we ask that their wishes be respected,” he said. “Grief counselors will be available on Monday for any students, faculty or staff affected by this terrible loss. … We send our deepest condolences to the family of the student.”   More than 200 hundred people attended a memorial service Sunday afternoon on the front lawn of the BHHS campus after being notified of the remembrance via Facebook.

“Elena’s favorite color was purple, so please try to wear purple tomorrow,” suggested the Facebook post, which said it was created by eight of her friends. More than 950 people responded to the post.

High school personnel and grief counselors were among those who attended the service, where prayers in Hebrew were read. All in attendance were invited to light a candle. Natanzadeh’s grief-stricken father asked for people to do a kind act this week in memory of his daughter.

Amidst the mourning, a woman attending the service collapsed, hitting her head on the sidewalk. Paramedics were called.

Natanzadeh’s may be the first student death at the high school, though other BHHS students have died off school grounds in the past.

“As far as I can recall, there has never been a death of a student on campus,” Board of Education member Myra Lurie told Patch.

I looked out the window and saw a woman, a neighbor who had just lost her husband to a younger woman, walking to work, trying so hard just to hold her head up in spite of broken dreams. We are such a desperate species.

All these years, the only way women could cope with the competition of so many beautiful women thrown at us on billboards, in advertising, in magazines and on TV is to become gay. The only way to deal with our defeat and low self-worth in the light of Victoria's Secret supermodels and spectacular female beauty is to embrace the enemy and make out with her!

It sure beats wallowing in envy and resentment that she has a hit series... and that any woman over 40 (who was ever considered beautiful) was not allowed to work in Hollywood. Up until recently, this was actually true. Helen Mirren aside.

On that note, I think Piper Perabo is stunning and cool. She plays a spy and is not afraid to break a fingernail.

I'm not gay, by the way. Not that there's anything wrong with that. My beautiful sister is gay and has written one of the most poignant "in defense of gay marriage" essays I've ever read. She describes how she has often felt "half a human" and not worthy of real love in her life, because of the way society classifies her as a second class citizen. Simply because she found her soul mate in another woman, she is not granted the freedom or rights or pursuit of happiness that other humans are granted without question. How can this even be possible after the Civil Rights Act?

Tricky headline. What I mean is, we are shifting rapidly from a consumer-driven, materialistic culture to more of an interdependent, social culture.

In the new emerging world, stuff is no longer important. People and networking with friends, making new friends, sharing ideas and helping others is much more important than accumulating stuff.

We are entering a new paradigm, a new way of trading goods and services, and a new way of living.

The reason Americans are all on antidepressants is because the American Dream led us down the wrong path. Natural life is supposed to be joyous, harmonious, loving, interdependent. We are supposed to be helping each other, sharing, enjoying each other's creativity and never competing (except in the games.) It was never supposed to be about stressful competition, accumulating wealth, bigger houses, longer working hours, killing each other, starting territorial or mineral wars. How misguided we have been.

That's why recovery in the economy may be painful for awhile. We are on the cutting edge of a whole new way of life.

Wealth and power have been our conventional measures of success. What definition will better sustain us now and how can we move into it?

(She's a forest and machine engineer who hasn't found a suitable job since immigrating from the Soviet Union 20 years ago) It broke my heart to hear this. SCRIPT FRENZY Lydia Cornell shares her thoughts on writer's block.

In March, during the storms after my divorce, faced with looming book deadlines, I had been avoiding work, sitting in a catatonic state, staring at the TV, watching episodes of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. I must have watched forty episodes in a row of the brilliant David Suchet and his mustache. Now I have to enter a 12-step program for addiction to this detective mystery that plants clues backwards and rarely has a linear plot. Poirot of all things!

“For the love of all that is holy,” my son said in his best imitation ofFamily Guy, “stop watching that boring show Mom. Aren’t you supposed to be writing your book?”

Teenagers are not nice people.

After a horrifying week of watching the Japanese nuclear reactor meltdown, our TV finally stopped working. The rainstorms had knocked out both internet and cable, and now I had no excuse not to write. It would have been a good thing if I had only used the storm properly. The day started out gray and cloudy and perfect! A wonderful, dark, rainy writing day. I was so excited, I kept repeating to myself: “I’m going to start writing in a minute… any minute now I’m going to start writing.”

“Okay, I’ll start after I get another cup of coffee.”

That’s when I accidentally wandered into the garage and found another set of unwatched Poirot DVDs buried inside a box of Christmas gifts I had forgotten to return.

“Okay, I’ll start writing after one more Poirot episode.

It was hours before I came out of the garage, having gone on a berserk treasure-hunting binge. We were out of red licorice (the 96 oz size) so I decided to go to Costco in Van Nuys, the end of the civilized world. I was so tired by the time I pulled into the parking lot that I climbed into the backseat of our minivan and took an hour-long nap.

Somehow, despite my son’s judgmental nagging, the writer’s block brought us closer. He actually hung out with me that week, did his homework in my room, and succumbed to the strange pull of Poirot. I think he liked the fact that I surrendered to TV-watching like a zombie, a droid, a neurosis-free blob of a mom.

It’s a good thing he didn’t know the truth: I was so deeply depressed and in such a dark place, I was losing faith in myself. What made it worse was that there were people in Japan who had lost everything, but they had more enthusiasm for life than I had.

At that moment, I sat up in bed and heard a voice, an inner voice, as if it was the most important question in the universe: What are you afraid of?

Writing is a spiritual process of letting go of fear of being judged.Embrace your defects; they are your greatest teachers. So now I view writer’s block as an important part of writing itself. Maybe we should rename it “gestation.” Thinking, going to the fridge, musing over ice cream flavors, watching Poirot— it’s all part of the birthing process.

But in the mortal realm, here is some practical advice: when you’re on a deadline, just sit down and turn on a kitchen timer. Set it for 20 minutes, and do not move until you’ve written a sentence, a paragraph or a page. Act as if a benevolent force of love exists that is always guiding you. Ask this force, the Universe, your Source, your loving higher Power, your inner-self, for the next indicated sentence. Write down the first thing that comes into your mind. This will help you to let go, face your writer’s block, and get back on track.

Heaven for writers must be a place where we get all our unfinished projects done in peace; a place where no ego exists, no burden of self, where we can write without worrying about selling our work. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? All the scripts, novels, plays, and children’s books left in closets and drawers that have been haunting us could be set free, if we could write without fear of being judged.

You are wonderful, and most of you have such a sweet spirit. Nurture your inner life, your heart and soul. Nothing else matters but how you love yourself and spread that love and acceptance to others. Most of my problems in life came from low self-esteem, which made me envious and worthless feeling.

Buddhists believe strongly that people must immerse themselves in feeling others' pain in order to gain the compassion that heals the world. When your heart is full of love for your fellow man, you can reach out and actually change people's lives.
One day when my son Jack was eight-years old and in third grade, he came home from school with a notice from the principal that a ten-year-old boy in our school, a fifth grader, had accidentally died overnight from a high fever. We had never met this boy or his family, but I felt the mother's pain so deeply it shattered me. I could not stop crying. My own son had been home in bed all week suffering from a similar fever. I searched for the family name in the school directory to see if they had any other children. They had one other son in ninth grade at our local high school.
I prayed so deeply for this mother I lost all sense of time — pouring compassion out to her, holding her in my heart with love that passes all understanding. Maybe that's what prayer is — the invisible transfer of love to another. And then my tears stopped. It was exactly four o'clock in the afternoon.
I felt a sudden, urgent need to get in my car and find this woman. All I knew was that she lived in a large apartment building on Rexford Drive, a few blocks away. The car literally seemed to drive itself down the street. At the end of the block, I saw an unusually tall Asian woman in a bathrobe pacing the sidewalk, looking shell-shocked. I veered into a driveway and stopped the car. She looked at me with a depth of sadness I will never forget. “Are you Benjamin's mother?” I asked as I stepped out of the car. At that moment something surreal happened. The woman began running toward me, and I began running toward her. She rushed into my arms and we just stood there in the middle of the sidewalk, holding each other. She was sobbing. Finally she looked at me and asked, “Did God send you?”
The woman was Korean-American, and explained in broken English that she had just come outside to search for her husband, who had disappeared in grief earlier that day. She asked if I would come inside and have some tea. She asked me if I would look at some pictures of her son.
We went inside and she showed me her son's “room,” which was just a corner of the living room that he shared with his older brother. Though this was Beverly Hills, they lived modestly in a one-bedroom apartment. She showed me Benjamin's report card, schoolwork, baseball trophies, and his collection of “Yugioh” cards — which were just like my son's. She poured tea and told me all the wonderful things about Benjamin.
I silently asked the universe to give me the right words to say, and out of my mouth came some memories formed into words I cannot not take credit for. I told her about my precious brother Paul and how he had come to me in a vision a few days after his death. I'll never forget this because I was driving my car and literally had to pull over and stop. On the radio they were playing the song from the Disney movie “Pocahontas” when the lyrics about the Sycamore tree came on: “Who knows how high the Sycamore grows, if you cut it down you'll never know.” This struck me because we had Paul's memorial service beneath a giant Sycamore tree in Franklin Canyon. Overcome by grief, my head collapsed onto the steering wheel. Now I have never experienced anything like this in my life, and it may sound completely loony — but suddenly, out of nowhere, a surge of warmth and light filled my body and I bolted upright in my seat. I saw my brother's face smiling at me, beaming at me, so broadly I had never seen him like this before. It was an inner vision, but it was as if he was right there talking to me. He told me not to cry, that he'd “see me later,” and that “there is no death.” Then, he said “I love you Lydia.” This was on the third day after I had found his body after the drug overdose. I felt at peace about him from that point on.
I kept a picture of my brother Paul by my bedside, with a candle burning next to it. One morning three days after his death, my one and a half-year-old toddler Jack woke up, giggled, pointed to the picture and exclaimed, “Paul happy!” This gives me chills even now when I remember it. To this day I can't even believe he could speak this well or even say these words - or even remember who Paul was! He had only met him a few times and most the time Paul was wearing sunglasses!
On the day we scattered his ashes at sea, before we left for the boat, three white doves alighted on our lawn, and these were not doves for hire. What is it with the number three?
As I sat with this woman, I told her that her son Benjamin was a blessing and a gift she got to keep for ten years — and now God needed him back home for bigger things. I told her “our children are on loan to us.” I have no idea where I got this, as I had never even thought about it that way before.
As she walked me out she said she felt a wave of peace come over her. “I was so sad before you came. Do you believe in angels? ” It dawned on me that we can all be 'angels' and comforters for each other when we open up and begin to really care about others. It's amazing how love uses us when we make ourselves available.
Our entire school attended Benjamin's funeral. During the eulogy, the minister read a letter written by this mother, which said: “Benjamin was a gift to us for ten years, and now God needs him back home.”
Maybe God is only to be explained through acts of human kindness, benevolence and comedy. Maybe that's all we need to know. There are so many times I've received a nudge to extend myself to help someone, but out of laziness or fear, I've ignored the call. Often I didn't feel equipped to help others because I was such a mess myself - and I wasn't able to get out of my self-centered fear.
But in the twelve steps there's a saying, “The answers will come when your own house is in order.”

The other day I was working on a Pirates of the Caribbean puzzle with my son. At the very same time I was succeeding at putting the puzzle pieces together, my life was somehow quietly, behind my back, slipping into place, into a sort of divine alignment. How did it happen? This journey has swept me into Hollywood and brought me to my knees. It also uncovered immense spiritual resources I never knew I had. Sometimes I think life is a tapestry and we are underneath with the long yarn, holding on for dear life, holding onto the threads and fibers unraveling, winding, knotting chaotically — but all the time being woven into something orderly and magnificent from the other angle, from above — if we would just let go and not hold the strings so tight. We just can't see the beauty of the tapestry from the other side, from God’s viewpoint.
Why do people talk so much about whether or not God exists, when God is simply love? Who can argue with love — or kindness, unselfishness, compassion, sharing, forgiveness? Asking someone to prove God's existence is like asking him to prove he loves his kids. How do you prove love exists except by watching it in action? Religion often gets in the way of God's simple purpose: to love one another. I have the profound sense that we can touch God everyday when we are loving to others, especially those who offend us and disturb us, and especially those less fortunate. Have you seen someone's face light up with just one kind word?
I can see how George Carlin thinks Jesus is for sissies, rednecks and dummies. I can see why intellectuals dismiss and ridicule followers of Christ. It seems like a cult of crazy people who believe you can see the Virgin Mary's face on a piece of pizza. But some people need signs like these.
“Compassion for others is impossible when we are filled with a belief that we are separate and distinct from other human beings,” says Wayne Dyer. Love really does heal everything. But 'faith without works is dead,” and we are all called to get out of ourselves and help each other, like the Good Samaritan. We must be peacemakers and take care of the poor, the meek, and the outcasts, the widows and orphans.

Einstein said it beautifully here:
A human being is a part of the whole called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

God Bless those suffering loss and devastation due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Pray for those near the nuclear reactors. To pray means to "see" the very best outcome; it is the evidence of things hoped for,

Grand me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; th ecourage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Most of us have no control over the situation in Japan or surrounding islands right now. We have no control over the nuclear reactor and warnings of a meltdown. Therefore, we cannot and SHOULD NOT worry about it. Worry never saved a single life. If anything, worry and doubt arrest all the good that is coming. Just relax and let all your worries go.

There is nothing you have to do or be or achieve to have a happy, joyous life. Don't believe that the world is ending or crashing down. If anything, we are entering a new enlightenment.

What you think about expands and grows.

We are all sculptors, working at various forms, moulding and chiseling thought.]]] What is the model before mortal mind? Is it imperfection, joy, sorrow, sin, suffering?

Have you accepted the mortal model? Are you reproducing it?
Then you are haunted in your work by vicious sculptors and hideous forms.

The result is that you are liable to follow those lower patterns, limit your life-work, and adopt into your experience the angular outline and deformity of matter models.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT CAST TOGETHER AGAIN at VITELLO'S

Last night we all went to see Jim J. Bullock perform in his one-man cabaret Upstairs at Vitello's in Studio City. Directed by Michael Lorre; Musical Direction and pianist Gary Mattison; Presented by Michael Sterling, this is a supper club with a stage. Vitello's is the scene of the crime in Robert Blake's murder mystery. Blake's wife Bonnie Lee was shot outside the restaurant.

Jim J. Bullock was amazing, funny and wonderful. He has a great singing voice and really knows how to belt out a song.

CHARLIE SHEEN SHUT UP PLEASE

Charlie Sheen is a dangerous role model for fledgling and active alcoholics and impressionable young people everywhere. We already have an epidemic of celebrities drinking and doing drugs in public, and getting attention for behaving badly.

Alcoholics Anonymous is the most amazing fellowship of the spirit, and it is the furthest thing away from being a "cult" or a place for weaklings.

Charlie Sheen has no idea what he's talking about. He is making an idiot of himself, and the most telling thing I heard a reporter say was: "If he is actually clean and sober according to the drug test, isn't this even MORE reason to worry?" meaning: isn't it scary that a person can be sober and still be such an asshole? The fact that he brags he is sober yet still says such astoundingly arrogant things, is cause to worry that he may be an actual sociopath.

He seems to care nothing for his fellow human being who may not have tiger's blood or Adonis DNA.

AA is the easier, softer way. I am 16 years sober by the Grace of the fellowship -- which is actually "god in the flesh." The best thing I ever did was let go of my intellectual arrogance and old ways of thinking - and surrender to a power greater than myself.

When I finally stopped thinking I was in control, a power much greater came in and lifted me out of a suicidal depression.

THE LIFE OF LOU TABAT, CONSTABLE OF LAS VEGAS and BOXING JUDGE

Today, at 5:55 PM, I received this text message from my ex-husband: "Uncle Lou died today." I felt a stab in my heart and a depth of sadness I hadn't felt since being blindsided by divorce in July.

Uncle Lou, a retired boxing judge, and the Constable of Las Vegas for 30 years, was my husband's mother's sister's husband, and not even a blood relative, but he was one of those souls that gets under your skin. He was cheerful and kind to everyone; always ready with a sweet word or cheesy joke. And he would never arrive for a visit without a pocketful of Virgin Mary coins, angel pins, rosaries, Lord and Savior pinkie rings and other chatchkes from Catholic bookstores.

He also came equipped with authentic-looking Constable and Sheriff's badges for the kids.

When I first visited his home in Las Vegas, I was amazed to see there were plastic flowers growing in the flower bed. This was the home he shared with his second wife Mary, my husband's aunt. They divorced shortly after this, and were both in their eighties! I used to pray they would just see the good in each other.

A year later he met the love of his life, Ann. They met at Church and spent the next eight years laughing at each other's jokes and appreciating each other. Ann was much younger, in her sixties, but she was just the tonic he needed. I have never seen such a happy couple.

Rest in Peace Uncle Lou. We love you so much. You are our HERO!! The most wonderful, loving man. I wish I could have had more time to tell you how much I admired you and adored you.

There is some good news in Las Vegas by Ann Tabat

Las Vegas - The other day I realized that each and every day we read the Las Vegas Review Journal there is a great amount of news which is very sad and discouraging. Many people are going through tough times, but I know someone who can see a brighter side and believes that we — as Las Vegans and Americans — can weather this storm and come out on top again.

Louis Tabat has a long history in Las Vegas. He was born on a farm in Appleton, Wisconsin near Green Bay. He signed on at 18 to join the Army Air Corp, which ultimately became the Air Force. For twenty years gave his undivided attention to his service and country and career. He was in the Second World War and the Korean War — and was also involved in the Berlin Airlift Missions. With great luck and many blessings he came back to the States unharmed and intact. He was one of the lucky ones. During his service to our nation, his growing family and devoted wife stood by his decisions. Before he left the Air Force as a Master Sergeant, while serving at Nellis Air Force Base, he prepared to take care of his family and remain in Nevada, the state he had grown to love.

He came out of the service with great pride and just in time to open Lou’s TV Store when channel 8 was coming in and the population of Las Vegas was about 42,000. It was a time when tubes, service and antennas were needed and the Service had taught him well. He had this store in North Las Vegas and saw much possibilities as he had been taught discipline and hard work. He loved people and was liked and known and asked to take a shot at running for Constable of Clark County.

His answer to this challenge was positive and why not? He knew how to serve and to work hard and he had integrity and the belief that Americans can do anything if they set their mind to it. He believed in Las Vegas and the system — and most of all — in the good people here.

Louis Tabat ran for office and served 6 terms, comprising 24 years as Constable of Las Vegas. He loved sports but was never able to take the time to participate and so read the books and learned the rules. As a community servant he reached out to the youth in activating sports and helping youth to see their potential. Dale Reid and Senator Harry Reid were good friends and supported his efforts.

Along the way he got involved as a boxing judge and was privileged to judge persons such as Muhammed Ali, Boom Boom Mancini, Mike Tyson and many other greats of their time. Joe Cortez is and was an amazing Referee whom he admires. They have kept their friendship through the years.

Lou has not opened any parks, nor is his name on any buildings — but he is a real part of this Las Vegas and America.

At 86, he is now retired. But he can't go anywhere, even into the fancy new hotels such as The Venetian, The Wynn, The Bellagio, The Palms or the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino without getting a warm greeting from those who were involved with his many projects. He was a very respected man for his integrity and his interest in all that goes on around him.

Lou believes that we must see more positive things at this time in our city and in our world.

He thinks we should share with the neighbor who just lost his job, that "two for the price of one" turkey you got for Thanksgiving. And maybe if we took out the old set of checkers and the deck of cards, the family could get together.

His theory was always to do his duty when serving papers to the unfortunate but to be sure to cause the least amount of pain. He Chief Deputy for years Russ Arville was a great asset and they still remain friends in contact. His secretary Karen Hall still calls and sees him and he her.

Lou keeps his Rolodex near and updated to call Kay DeNeal, retired Highway Patrol, Joe Cortez his good friend, and many more who are still a good part of his life and memories. If you are not at home he leaves a hello message and tells you he is just remembering you for a good hello.

Lou’s mottos are things like don’t get upset as what do you have to gain. Be proud to be an American, build America and buy American.

He likes now to make “reservations” and enjoy a lunch out with his friends and to make new ones. He will be sure to make the waiter or waitress smile and not only tip them proper but tip his hat as they say , When you come back ask for me as it was a pleasure to serve you.

Let’s all think about not how big we are but what it is we will leave behind in the minds of our friends and fellow citizens.

When we leave our smiles and a reminder to someone else that they can make it not matter what it takes then we have done a good service.

I am his wife and I really see him for what he is. We wish for all of you a better New Year, more positive thinking, more thinking of each other and most of all to know that there are more of you out there that can make a difference in these very difficult times. We often forget the tough times because they were tough but we did come back up and we are stronger people for it.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, THIS TRUE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY AND REMEMBER LAS VEGAS IS A PART OF IT AND SO ARE YOU.

I have the funniest memories of seeing this magazine! I remember when I came to the set that day, and TED KNIGHT looked at me as if I had planted this story! He laughed and I could swear he said: "You have a lot of nerve being on the cover, your face takes up the WHOLE COVER! BUT I'm the star of the show!! And don't you think Princess Di and Prince Charles deserve to have a bigger photo?"
We laughed. Sort of.

Magic and miracles... If you want to get rid of your fear of sheep, you can bet you will soon be surrounded by sheep. God gives you what you ask for, believe me.

I thought I had married a man who needed to be healed. The truth was, I needed to be healed too. I thought we found each other and married, to heal the ancient wounds of our childhood.

God speaks to me via what Jung called synchronicity. I get big neon signs. "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous." Other people get visions, or hear voices.. or receive quiet thoughts that seem to come from a higher, more loving place. It takes practice, but you can hear God speaking to you when you take time to shut down the mind, and be still and meditate everyday. (Start with 20 minutes.)

When I married Paul, I thought we were together to heal the ancient wounds from our childhood. I had a fantasy that because he was named Paul, and I was named Lydia, we were supposed to be on the Road to Damascus together.

Award-winning actress, writer, talk show host, comedienne and inspirational public speaker, Lydia Cornell grew up in in America’s living rooms. She hosted a documentary for Safe Passage Home.org — an organization that gives extreme life makeovers to victims of domestic violence, which will be shown on Oxygen network.

She mentors teenagers and is deeply involved in women’s and children’s charities. A mother of boys, she has been raising teenagers! Last fall she housed domestic abuse victims and cared for their children throughout the school year. With the help of the police, Cornell helped rescue a battered woman from a predator.

Sixteen years sober, Cornell does inspirational public speaking all over the country on domestic violence as well as drug and alcohol abuse.

Cornell’s triumph over tragedy, depression and addiction was the result of a ‘catastrophic spiritual awakening.’ “There is a reason so many celebrities are in rehab these days,” she says. Her experiences in overcoming a string of failures and humiliations inspired her to assist others with their own demons.

It is a spiritual law that in the midst of love, everything that is unlike love, must come up for healing. In other words, all the ugliness we are seeing right now in the world, is erupting in order for it to be purged, healed and done away with.

Despite catastrophic events such as the Tuscon shootings, school shootings, BP Oil spill, wars and catastrophes — good things are coming, and are actually here. We have to open our eyes and see that in the midst of turmoil, actual change for the GOOD is taking place. But it takes our connected, joint vision — our progressive belief in a better (more fair) world, that actually CREATES it.

Love, God is an interactive force, just like the environment. It needs our collusion, belief, and leaps of faith to activate change. Miracles happen as a result of our belief in them.

In a diverse society, the only moral tenet we need to practice is the Golden Rule. God is love and prayer is the invisible transfer of love to another. By taking leaps of faith, I've somehow been able to transform the deadening illusion of "reality" by changing my viewpoint. (Reality is actually beauty, goodness, love, truth, harmony.) We can physically change our experience of the world by changing our view. The key to this is to simply stop rehearsing turbulent thoughts, and to be grateful for the good in our lives.

The past two years have been brutal, full of tears and prayers for the world, young people committing suicide, and even my own marriage. I've succumbed to hopelessness at times. But I've been experimenting with new thought again. For example, whenever I have a fear-based or depressed thought I stop in my tracks and instantly reverse the thought — see the other side. See the beauty in the present moment, relax and realize the sky is not falling. It helps to find humor anywhere you can find it. There is abundant good in the world and it becomes visible the more you choose to see it.

The picture in your mind is your reality. Change the channel if you are getting a bad picture.

Are women expendable and repaceable? Are we just sex objects until we're 25, and then considered over-the-hill and useless? I have spent years mentoring teenage boys and girls, and this seems to be the prevailing viewpoint; this is what they are telling me.

A 7th grade girl at my kids' school was caught in the boys' room performing a sexual act on an 8th grade boy. A gifted young Indian girl has decided to become sexually active because she doesn't think she's pretty (or blonde!) enough to get a boyfriend. All the preteens I know are obsessed with sex, and using language that makes me faint. These kids are aspiring to become lap dancers. When did pole-dancing become a degree-requiring profession! Sex, sex and more sex - this is the prevailing value in our culture these days. Thanks to Britney, Miley, Lindsay, Paris, Kim Kardashian and TMZ! Actually we must thank MTV and advertising. My motto is: All human suffering is caused by Victoria's Secret!

That's why I'm trying to become a virgin again in more ways than one. How can you find your soul in a pornographic world? I tell these girls that mystery is appealing; that keeping your clothes on is provocative. We don't need to create any more men of entitlement. There is already an army of men cheating on their wives and using women like paper towels, as Tiger Woods did.

In our culture it seems that women are being sexually objectified more than ever. I am a product of the 80's, and as a sex symbol I had to dumb myself down to fit into Hollywood. I also had to wear short-shorts and skimpy costumes on TV and pose in a sequined bikini to promote Too Close for Comfort.

We are obsessed with sex in America in a very immature way. We have made something natural seem titillating and taboo because of our Puritan nature. Advertisers jumped on this, seeing the potential in creating a plot to keep women thin and insecure. I am not blaming men for all my problems, but they did invent makeup and war and high heels. Do you know the historical purpose of high heels? To raise women up for easier insertion! It's true! I'll tell you the history later.

My son's friend Tommy, 14, came back from Europe this summer and said the people are so genuine there. He said they seem to value relationships more than "stuff" and looking "hot." My stepson is obsessed with having "cut abs" on Facebook. God Bless him. I have tried to tell him it's inner strength that matters, but he looked at me like I was an alien.

I have been wondering if the greed era, circa 1980-2008, in which capitalism has been allowed to run amok -- is responsible for creating so many sociopaths and narcissists in our country. What are American values? What do we value?

A return to innocence is what most of us are craving, but we may not even know it.

The outer world with all its crises and technical difficulties, where just getting your body through the day is an astounding feat, is not the real picture. Oddly enough, if you can see it clearly, what's real is the invisible. As Einstein said, "no problem can be solved at the same level it was created on." He also said, "goodness, truth and beauty are laws of the universe.

We must stop buying into the material picture. Only good is real.

In light of the BP Gulf Oil spill, the methane gas explosion in the coal mine tragedy, the Wall Street credit default swaps and banking con game, and the mortgage crisis, it's evident that "you reap what you sow" and corruption is finally reaping its rewards.

But there is a solution, and all of this can be reversed. We must stop and heed the warnings right now. This is our chance. We are standing on the threshold, and the human race can go either way.

This is how the law of life works: when you give, you receive. And the more you give, the more you receive.
It is wonderful the way love created a full circle of gifts. The one thing in the world the cab driver wanted, he received — as a result of his kindness and generosity.

Here's what's interesting. The woman was rude and bitchy to the cab driver. She dreaded that he was always the one sent to drive her because he was always late and always got lost. She presented herself as a bitter, unhappy woman who complained a lot.

What is amazing about this is that the cab driver did not spew anger or bark back at the rude woman. He quietly persisted in trying to first understand her behavior. He wondered why she was so bitchy and mean-spirited. "A soft answer turns away wrath."

Question: If the cab driver had yelled or cursed or been equally rude to the woman — if he had retaliated in an "eye for an eye" way — would he have been the perfect donor match for this woman?

Obviously he would not have been open-hearted enough to even offer his kidney — but let's take it a step further. If he were a miserly, hateful, angry person — would he have had the right chemistry, the correct DNA, or even have a healthy kidney to give her?

What do you think? I believe his open-hearted attitude toward the rude woman — and his gentle persistence in trying to understand her pain — was the compassion that created the donor match. Anyone can be loving to someone who is loving to them first, but when we are loving to those who hate us and persecute us, we disarm them. We conquer our enemies. (By the way, that is the mark of a true Christian; the one who turns the other cheek and loves his enemies and his neighbor as himself.

Love is creative. It creates life. The cab driver's loving compassion actually made his kidney the right donor match.

Love in the face of hatred is the law of attraction. Like attracts like; hence, the kidney match. I know this may sound difficult to wrap your mind around, but with an understanding of Quantum Physics, it is simple to understand.

If the cab driver had been a jerk just like she was, there would have been no healing or gifts received. There would have just been two hollow, hateful people passing like ships in the night. Maybe the cabbie would have had to learn his lesson in another way.

But two jerks usually cancel each other out. So it's our job, each of us, to go out into the world and do what we can to make someone happy. Here's how simple it is: Love creates life. When we express love, no matter how someone else is behaving, everyone involved in an argument is healed.

I don't mean to repeat myself but this is an important point, and a major discovery. Love heals. it is a creative force. Hate is a destructive force; it does not create life — it kills life. Just as darkness is the absence of light, and coldness is the absence of warmth, hatred is the absence of love. Hatred, darkness and cold have no power of their own. They are not self-starters.

This man took a bad situation and shined love on it. By his generosity, he enabled his kidney to be the right one as a donor match.

How is this possible?

In Quantum physics, scientists have proven that our loving attention to an object actually changes the object in the physical universe.

We have been conditioned to believe that the external world is more real than the internal world. Quantum Physics says just the opposite: what’s happening on the inside determines what’s happening on the outside. Our world is shaped by our thoughts. So your loving attention to something, literally alters the physical universe. This is scientific, but it is not easily understood.

Energy consists of sub-atomic particles that in turn make up atoms and finally matter. This energy exists as waves spread out over space and time. They have discovered that down to the tiniest atom, there is only empty space. There is no solid matter. Everything is energy. Everything exists in waves of infinite possibility. Only when we focus our attention on an object does that object become a particle. We "particularize" an object by our attention to it.

So thoughts really are things. And 85% of all disease is caused by stress -- which means worry, fear or misplaced thoughts that become ingrained habits of negativity. There is now scientific proof that loving thoughts actually create a thicker brain cortex. Monks who meditate on love regularly have no disease.

Dr. Christine Northrup says "Hope is a biochemical state in the body that promotes healing."

Laughter heals. And we know that love heals everything. Love is the actual definition of God. (If only the hateful Christian and Muslim fundamentalists knew that; they seem to omit Christ's teachings form their form of Christianity. Very bizarre.

Love is an interactive force. The Creator needs playmates to show off for. God needs our cooperation and belief in order to manifest miracles in our lives.

To have "miracles" and results, we need to cooperate with love or goodness or God (they all mean the same thing) because it is an interactive force. By our loving, selfless action, we create harmony and goodwill. By being loving and giving, this man became the perfect match.

In this case, the Universe kept putting the cabbie and the woman together because the woman needed to be "driven" into submission by the cab driver's gentleness. This is the method used by the Great Peacemaker when he healed so-called "sinners." He leaned on Divine Love with revolutionary softness. Christ didn't condemn the adulterer or the thief; his unconditional love made them want to walk in the light, and transformed their hearts. Whether you believe the healing miracles or not, loving your enemies actually works. "A soft answer turns away wrath."

In any case, fate/the universe/God or whatever you call your higher power — kept putting the cab driver and the bitch together because they each had a missing piece that created the whole; the full circle.

It is wonderful the way love created a full circle of gifts. The one thing in the world the cab driver wanted, he received — as a result of his generosity. The antidote to poverty and depression is generosity. This cab driver acted exactly as the Great Peacemaker would; he gave freely without thought of self. And he received everything.

And what was the catalyst? Returning love for hate. The cab driver persisted in being loving to his enemy.

If Christians were practicing true Christianity, we wouldn't be in this financial crisis which created a house of cards in the financial industry.

Reporting from Jerusalem Israel faced a diplomatic firestorm Monday over its deadly attack against a protest flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Foreign leaders and protest organizers accused Israel of using excessive force in the raid in international waters, but Israel defended its actions, saying that soldiers were ambushed with knives and metal bars, as well as handguns wrested from the commandos.

Israel's military said nine protesters were killed in the late-night raid, which occurred about 40 miles off Israel's coast. Protest organizers put the death toll at 16. Dozens were wounded, including seven Israeli soldiers.

Video of the attack released by the Israeli military, Turkish television and other media sources depicted a dramatic high-seas brawl in which Israeli commandos rappelled from helicopters onto a ship and immediately clashed with activists on board.

Responding to the brewing crisis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his visit to Canada to return to Israel and canceled a much-anticipated White House visit with President Obama.

U.S. officials expressed regret at the loss of life but stopped short of criticizing Israel until full details of the incident were released.

Elsewhere, however, international leaders condemned Israel's interception of the pro-Palestinian convoy, which was attempting to break through Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip and bring food, medical supplies, clothing and constructions supplies to the impoverished territory.

As the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting, French President Nicolas Sarkozy criticized Israel's "disproportionate use of force."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a "thorough investigation" into the violence, saying he was "shocked" by the reports.

"My favorite definition of spirituality is ‘whatever makes you feel peaceful, joyful and content,’” writes Cornell. Few people have ever adequately explained the connection between alcohol/drug recovery and the spiritual solution. How do 12-step programs work? There is a consistent universal, natural law and life-changing principle at work here. You have to start from the right starting-point, looking only at the "good" and never focusing on the problem itself. Look away from the actual thing you are most worried about. Replace your thought of fear or worry with a thought that makes you feel joy or comfort or happiness. Let it go. Don't over-analyze it or worry about your problems. "What you focus on, GROWS." Walk away and give it to your higher power.

Miracles happen when you're looking at the beauty in the universe and not at the problem. "A watched pot never boils." Einstein said, "Nothing can be solved at the same level it was created on." You have to go higher to a spiritual solution. Don't use your small brain.

I am interested in exploring the non-religious aspect of the term ‘spiritual,’ so we can bridge the gap between a narrow religious idea of God and a personal experience with a higher power. People in AA are always having "God shots" -- spine-tingling coincidences or glimpses of a beautiful, harmonious life where everything works together for good. The minute you surrender your drink/drug problem to the group as a higher power, and just relax, look around, stay in the present moment, you are already safe.

“What appear to be miracles are actually natural laws. Our loving attention to something literally alters the physical universe, according to Quantum Physics,” writes Cornell. “I have spine-tingling proof of a powerfully loving force that is interactive and responsive. You see, behind the external picture, there is an invisible divine harmony, a language just as music and mathematics are an invisible language. You can’t destroy the number “3.” You can’t destroy the principle of mathematics. Therefore, you can’t destroy the principle of love. All life is good, ever-expanding good. Because we are all offshoots of this divine mind – we actually have creative power with our thoughts.

Catherine Bach walks behind the coffin carrying her husband, Peter Lopez. Lopez, who was Michael Jackson's entertainment lawyer, took his own life last week. The service was carried out at Saint Monica Catholic Church, CA.

God Bless my friend Catherine Bach and her daughters, after the tragic suicide of her husband Peter Lopez. Peter was such a kind, genuine, wonderful person, a great father and husband. This is such a shock. No one can figure it out. He was a successful entertainment attorney, and represented Parisilton and Michael Jackson at one time. Catherine was so in love with him, and really felt blessed to be married to him.

'80s sex symbol Lydia Cornell collaborates with "Fraiser" star Kelsey Grammer on new sketch-comedy program

Los Angeles, CA May 4, 2010 -- She is a fresh new voice in comedy on Kelsey Grammer's new celebrity TV network, but a familiar face to millions of regular television viewers. In the '80s, actress Lydia Cornell (http://www.lydiacornell.com) played Ted Knight's gorgeous, daffy blonde bombshell daughter Sara Rush in ABC's hit sitcom, "Too Close for Comfort." The stunning young talent quickly skyrocketed to fame, becoming the decade's first poster girl. Since the series ended, Cornell triumphed over tragedy and transformed herself into a writer, producer, comedienne, teen-mentor and talk-radio host. Cornell has now joined the cast of "The Kelsey Grammer/Bill Zucker Show," a comic blast of full-speed Improv at TODHD (http://www.todhd.com), the first online celebrity-branded TV network. The show is a twisted, hilarious mash-up of "Benny-Hill"-schoolboy naughtiness and spontaneous sketch humor a la "SCTV."
The unbridled lunacy of "The Kelsey Grammer/Bill Zucker Comedy Show" comes naturally for Cornell, a veteran comedienne who most recently appeared on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and in the upcoming film "Me, Miami and Nancy," co-starring Robert Downey, Jr., Jon Bon Jovi and Gary Oldman. "Working with a comic genius like Kelsey Grammer is a dream come true! I have never had so much fun doing improv since working with Larry David on Curb," says Cornell. "And Bill Zucker is crazy-funny, a force of nature. He's the perfect contrast to Kelsey. I can't keep a straight face when I'm around him." She adds, "Kelsey has great taste; he produces my favorite television show, 'Medium,' starring Patricia Arquette, now on CBS."

The show was Zucker's brainchild. Through the social networking magic of Twitter, Zucker was contacted by Grammer, who won four Emmy Awards for playing the neurotic psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on both "Cheers" and its hugely successful spin-off, "Frasier." Zucker has been a fan of Cornell since her ABC heyday. "Bill had my posters on the walls of his room growing up," Cornell explained. "He tweeted me, Tom Cruise and Scott Baio to be in his Twitter Song video. Zucker's Twitter Song won You Tube Comedy Video of 2009. Kelsey saw the video and called Bill to do a show with him. The power of social media!" The show also costars Scott Baio ("Happy Days"), Mario Bosco ("The Jimmy Kimmel Show"), and the Stanley Clarke Band.
"The Kelsey Grammer/Bill Zucker Comedy Hour" is one of Cornell's many projects this year. Her upcoming book is a collection of hilarious stories about her journey through Hollywood on the road to enlightenment. She says, "Being an actress is wonderful if you're lucky enough to thrive on humiliation. "If you're a woman over 30, you have to dance naked under bad lighting to audition for a role as a hooker or desperate housewife. But men don't have that problem. My husband, who doesn't even exercise, is accidentally handed a regular role on a hit series, A&E's 'Gene Simmons Family Jewels.' And he's not even an actor!"
Cornell soon hits the stage in "Pain is Inevitable, Sex Optional," her original three-woman show at the Whitefire Theatre in Studio City -- written with costars Destiny Smith ("The Tonight Show") and Stephanie Hodge ("Unhappily Ever After"). A prolific writer, Cornell has written an historical novel about Stalin's plot to kill Trotsky, various screenplays, and 40 episodes of a TV series based on her upcoming humor books.
Cornell's triumph over tragedy, depression and addiction was the result of a 'catastrophic spiritual awakening.' Her experiences in overcoming a string of failures and humiliations inspired her to assist others with their own demons. Her uplifting Facebook and Twitter sites provide comfort and laughs to thousands of devoted fans -- as her blog continues to provoke readers with her often-brave socio-political commentaries.
