Rand herself wrote the screenplay. Despite a good cast and director, the movie was an abysmal flop. However, there is one line in there that has pretty much sums up the whole Neo-Con outlook.
"A man who works for the sake of others is a slave."
So I guess all of us who have served this country whether in the military, police, fire/rescue or teachers are really second class citizens according to Ayn Rand...and Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, and others.
Now, it all makes a really horrible kind of sense.frankfreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07363811765037832164noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-15577105242739195602009-03-24T12:52:00.000-07:002009-03-24T12:52:00.000-07:00Lydia, Very interesting observation. I see now that I was wrong to do so.
The Reich Wing to me has been built on three "legs" for want of a better term.
The first is the Neo-Conservatism as espoused by Leo Strauss. This is actually a distortion of Plato's philosophy of the rule of the elite or oligarchy.
The second is the Neo-Liberal economic philosophy of Milton Friedman with it's emphasis on Economic Social Darwinism and the horribly misnamed "free markets".
The final one was spiritual. It is the Calvinistic concept of pre-determination. You know, if you're poor or sick it is because God has so ordained it. You are so going to Hell as well since God has already determined that.
The problem is , however, that a number of Neo-Cons have used the Religious Reich for political benefit only(Dick Cheney comes immediately to mind) so the whole Calvinist thing is rather shaky in that regard.
Objectivism now fills that gap. It provides the anti-social non-religious with an equivalent moral/spiritual underpinning.
It is nothing short of self-idolatry which given the massive narcissism rampant with Limbaugh, Coulter, et. al serves as their religion.frankfreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07363811765037832164noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-91414060184745598832009-03-24T12:03:00.000-07:002009-03-24T12:03:00.000-07:00Thanks Frank! I agree, but this seems to be the philosophy of Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Ron Paul (whom I agree with on some things) Ann Coulter and most of the neo-cons who got us into trouble.Fans and Friends of Lydia Cornellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01512357844572930333noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102706.post-59023349310158993742009-03-24T11:51:00.000-07:002009-03-24T11:51:00.000-07:00Ayn Rand!...I went through my "Objectivist" phase ...Ayn Rand!...I went through my "Objectivist" phase when I was a teenager growing up in the 60's. The first book of hers that I read was "Anthem" which when you are a rebellious 15 year old sounds really cool. It didn't last long. My parents had always taught us that along with your rights as an American citizen you also had responsibilities to your country and community.
I remember my father's comment after reading some of Ayn Rand's essay..."I really don't know who this woman is but she's fulla crap."
I don't think I could do a better analysis.:-)frankfreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07363811765037832164noreply@blogger.com
