"PRESIDENTS HAVE TO DEAL WITH MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME"

President Barack Obama says he sees no need to cancel the debate. "Presidents have to deal with more than one thing at a time. " Good Point. I think Obama is wonderfully soothing, calm and presidential. And he can multi-task! He makes me feel safe.

John McCain, panicked, wants to cancel the debate. But I think this is a political ploy to show he is "a uniter, not a divider!" But going forward with the debate would be a much better idea. I wish the debate was about the economy instead of foreign affairs. This way, Obama could hit home the fact that this financial crisis is a Republican-made catastrophe. McCain resembles a nervous ninny. He does not make me feel safe.

Did everyone see this email? I don't know who wrote it, but it is priceless:

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'

Grow up in Alaska shooting and eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress — as McCain did — and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

Thought of the Day

Tell everyone you know: "My happiness depends on me, so you're off
the hook." And then demonstrate it. Be happy, no matter what they're
doing.

Practice feeling good, no matter what. And before you know it, you
will not give anyone else responsibility for the way you feel—and
then, you'll love them all.

Because the only reason you don't love them, is because you're using
them as your excuse to not feel good.

  1. Lydia this about explains McSame's political stunt real good;

    Wait ... Wait

What's changed today in the financial crisis other than John McCain's poll numbers tanking? Isn't this the campaign equivalent of faking an injury when you're down late in the 4th quarter? Note too that McCain was in the midst of debate prep when he made this decision.

Look at what appears to have happened. Obama reached out to McCain privately to agree to a shared set of bailout principles. McCain went off the handle again and tried to use the crisis as a way to call off the debates.

Late Update: One longtime reader says it's worse than that:

Obama reached out privately, because once this discussion went public it was bound to be politicized. Instead of taking his call and hearing what he had to say, McCain spent the next six hours huddling with his aides, searching for a way of turning the situation to his political advantage. His response - a unilateral, public call for cooperation - was designed to retake the initiative and steal Obama's thunder. But it also ends any hope of actual cooperation.

Obama reached out, hoping that McCain would see something more important at stake than his own personal ambition. Alas, it would appear that there is nothing more important to McCain.

  2. Somebody should tell McSame Abramson Lincoln didn't suspend his campaign for re-election in 1864, EVEN though the country had been torn apart by a civil war.

FDR didn't suspend his campaign for re-election during 1944 even though we were in the largest war the entire world had ever seen.

The campaign in 1932 wasn't canceled because the US was in the great depression, (thank god)

St Johnny looks a wee bit desperate.

  3. Thats it EXACTLY Clif............McSame see's his campaign imploding and was flat out AFRAID that looking inept in the debate would be the final straw that broke the camel's back so he hid like a slimy little coward.

  6. Here are three reason's St Johnny want the campaign to be suspended, then restarted;

    Meredith who didn’t buy it.

Viera: You have said, bottom line, it’s those fat cats. It’s the greed of Wall Street. You promised to crack down on CEOs who walked away with huge severance packages. And yet the person who up until recently was your public face on your economic policy was Carly Fiorina. She’s the former CEO of Hewlett Packard, she was fired in 2005, but she left with a $45 million dollar golden parachute while 20,000 of her employees were laid off. She is an example of exactly the kind of person you say is at the root of the problem. How can you say that?

McCain: I don’t think so. … Because I think she did a good job as CEO in many respects. I don’t know the details of her compensation package. But she’s one of many advisers that I have.

Viera: But she did get a $45 million dollar golden parachute after being fired while 20,000 of her employees were laid off.

McCain: I have many of the people, but I do not know the details of what happened.

Sure, he doesn’t know all the details about Carly while letting her speak for his campaign almost daily. Right, and I got a bridge to nowhere to sell you.

Free Sarah Palin: Campbell Brown goes off on McCain for hiding Palin from the press

“Bear with me for a short rant on another subject, because frankly I have had and I know a lot of other women out there are with me on this. I have had enough of the sexist treatment of Sarah Palin. It has to end. She was here in New York City today meeting with world leaders at the UN. And what did the McCain campaign do? They tried to ban reporters from covering those meetings. And they did ban reporters from asking her any questions. Tonight, I call on the McCain campaign to stop treating Sarah Palin like she is a delicate flower that will wilt at any moment. This woman is from Alaska, for crying out loud. She is strong; she is tough; she is competent. And you claim she is ready to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. If that is the case, then end this chauvinistic treatment of her now. Allow her to show her stuff. Allow her to face down those pesky reporters just like Barack Obama did today. Just like John McCain did today. Just like Joe Biden has done on numerous occasions. Let her have a real news conference with real questions. By treating Sarah Palin different from the other candidates in this race, you are not showing her the respect she deserves. Free Sarah Palin. Free her from the chauvinistic chain you are binding her with. Sexism in this campaign must come to an end. Sarah Palin has just as much a right to be a real candidate in this race as the men do. So let her act like one.”

I guess when you lose Ms Daniel Senor, you LOSE ....

    BTW they didn't take Campbell Brown's advise;

Palin gets question, looks to McCain, demurs

This is what happens when campaigns let reporters into photo ops. They get all uppity and ask questions.

From the pool report account of what happened after McCain and Palin's meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvilli and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko:

McCain then looked around the room and gestured as if to welcome questions. The AP reporter shouted a question at Gov. Palin (“Governor, what have you learned from your meetings?”) but McCain aide Brooke Buchanan intervened and shepherded everybody out of the room.

Palin looked surprised, leaned over to McCain and asked him a question, to which your pooler thinks he shook his head as if to say “No.”

Because it seems Sarah Palin ain't the only one NOT ready.

  9. BTW why do I get the thought, that John McCain seems like Homer Simpson now a days,

Every day since last Monday he has had a Homer Duh moment?

He seems to be runnin' a homer like campaign and even his clueless side kick gets it, but they won't let her talk for some reason.

  10. Here are the current proposed changes to the very thin plan Hank Paulson proposed;

Working Draft of House Bailout Plan

    Looks quite good to me,

More help for the "man on the street"

Less corporate welfare for Wall Street.

Hopefully the democrats can keep the new set of cojones they found this past week.

Hopefully the White House will finally allow help for the American middle class BEFORE the greedy rich bastards who created this mess in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  11. BTW here is a great idea,

Congress should consider changing the 401K tax code to let individual homeowners liquidate their 401K holdings, without penalty and without having to quit or lose their jobs beforehand, as long as the funds are streamed straight into home mortgages as principal paydowns or used to refinance away from variable interest rate HELoCs and ARMs.

If you believe the stock and bond markets will be flat for a good decade - as do I - then the best place for your retirement money would to use it to reduce total interest payments over the term of that mortgage.

If your already LOSING money in your 401, and losing your house it would make sense to liquidate the former to save the latter wouldn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. That just might save quite a few houses from forclosure, and save the middle class from losing both the money they put away and the house they bought.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Huffington says,

“John McCain has skipped more votes during this session than any member of the Senate except for Tim Johnson, who had major brain surgery. He has cast only a single vote in five months, since April 9. All of a sudden, McCain is demanding that the presidential race be shut down so he can return to Washington?

A reminder: President Bush was able to debate John Kerry while he was president. For all of his sudden urgency, McCain acknowledged just yesterday that he had not even read the administration’s three-page bailout proposal.”

    Letterman mocks McCain cancellation

Per Drudge, some brutal late night shots at McCain, who cancelled on Letterman tonight:

David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.

Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"

Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, "You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves." And he joked: "I think someone's putting something in his metamucil."

"He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?"

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president?
We've got a guy like that now!"

Can't win a campaign if your quickly becoming a NATIONAL JOKE

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not to mention the FDR wasn't even president when the market crashed...

No duncetron FDR wasn't president when Wall Street crashed last time, Bush's ideological soul mate was Herbert Hoover, who did absolutely NOTHING about it ...... FDR cleaned up Hoover's mess just like Obama is gonna have to clean up Bush's mess.

  21. David Letterman thinks he's a joke, and Joe Klein says he is just pulling another gimmick;

    Gimmicks 'R' Us

McCain suspends his campaign because of financial crisis? Oh please. Given today's poll numbers--even Fox has him dropping--it seems another Hail Mary (like the feckless selection of Palin) to try make McCain seem a statesman, which is difficult given the puerile tenor of his campaign's message operation.

Perhaps, if he's really interested in this financial stuff, McCain should propose that he and Obama change the topic from foreign policy to economics this Friday night--they could even stage the debate in Washington, so they wouldn't have to stray far from the bailout negotiations. I'm sure their fellow members of the Senate won't mind if McCain and Obama spend a few hours enlightening the public on this crucial subject.

No wonder St Johnny is sinkin' in the polls ........

  23. Lydia, my wife Sheri posted this today at her blog Ain't That Sherific.

This is Your Nation on White Privilege
    By Tim Wise
    9/13/08

For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."

White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.

White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.

White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.

White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look."

White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.

White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America.

White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.

White privilege is being able to go to a prestigious prep school, then to Yale and Harvard Business School (George W. Bush), and still be seen as an "average guy," while being black, going to a prestigious prep school, then Occidental College, then Columbia, and then Harvard Law, makes you "uppity" and a snob who probably looks down on regular folks.

White privilege is being able to graduate near the bottom of your college class (McCain), or graduate with a C average from Yale (W.), and that's OK, and you're still cut out to be president, but if you're black and you graduate near the top of your class from Harvard Law, you can't be trusted to make good decisions in office.

White privilege is being able to dump your first wife after she's disfigured in a car crash so you can take up with a multi-millionaire beauty queen (who you then go on to call the c-word in public) and still be thought of as a man of strong family values, while if you're black and married for nearly 20 years to the same woman, your family is viewed as un-American and your gestures of affection for each other are called "terrorist fist bumps."

White privilege is when you can develop a pain-killer addiction, having obtained your drug of choice illegally like Cindy McCain, go on to beat that addiction, and everyone praises you for being so strong, while being a black guy who smoked pot a few times in college and never became an addict means people will wonder if perhaps you still get high, and even ask whether or not you may have sold drugs at some point.

White privilege is being able to sing a song about bombing Iran and still be viewed as a sober and rational statesman, with the maturity to be president, while being black and suggesting that the U.S. should speak with other nations, even when we have disagreements with them, makes you dangerously naive and immature.

White privilege is being able to say that you hate "gooks" and "will always hate them," and yet, you aren't a racist because, ya know, you were a POW, so you're entitled to your hatred, while being black and noting that black anger about racism is understandable, given the history of your country, makes you a dangerous bigot.

White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden.

And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole"change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

White privilege is, in short, the problem.

  24. Now McCain Wants To Postpone Palin’s VP Debate

Dana Bash, CNN: I spoke with Senator Lindsey Graham, he is in the McCain campaign, he is negotiation — is trying to negotiate with the Obama campaign and the presidential debate commission. What they are saying, and what he is saying is that they are proposing to instead of having next Thursday the vice presidential debate in St. Louis, to make that the presidential debate and then to delay the VP debate to another time. That is what they are proposing, they understand very well that both the Obama campaign and the debate commission have no intention of delaying Friday’s debate, but both he and a senior advisor that if there is no bailout deal by Friday, McCain has no plan to go to debate.

…. could the McSame campaign be crashing even faster then Wall Street is?

    A win in November.

You've got the tactics right, but you've got the wrong players.

Bush is just scared, and doesn't want an economic meltdown added to his legacy so he's listening to smart people around him. Finally.

On the frontlines he's putting his people out but in the rear its Greenspan and other smart people telling them what they need to do.

The dems are playing you now, just like the repubs played their base. They've got you so worked up that you're condemning a tactic that has been proven to work already.

The democrats are busy making speeches getting people like you to buy into their hype, instead of pointing out to you that its their hype that precipitated this crisis, and that the truth is MOST of our mortgages in this country are good, and thus our economy more sound than they want to let on.

The pre-election fearmongering is what drove us into this mess, NOT Americans defaulting on mortgages. We over hyped an ANTICIPATED spike in defaults that was EXPECTED due to the new Sub Prime and ARM programs and that in turn scared off foriegn investors from purchasing securities backed by US mortgages, which in turn caused banks, who were relying on those devaluing securities, to fail.

The republicans play their base like a cheap plastic banjo at an Earl Scruggs concert. I find it ironic, that the democrats and liberals don’t notice when their leaders do likewise.

  42. Herbert Hoover lost his 32 re-election bid not because he established the Reconstruction Finance Corp to bail out the banks, but because he established it 4 years too late.

After watching the country rot in a depression caused by bank failings for 4 years, and seeing his reelection hopes dashed, he finally did the right thing, and established the RFC and began pulling the banks out.

But it was too late as far as the public was concerned, who had to rot for 4 years under his miserable depression where he was, like you, busy “teaching those fat cats a lesson”.

Well, the fat cats learned the lesson alright, as did ALL the cats.

    Everyone rotted under that decision.

When FDR took over in 33, and seeing the success of the Hoovers RFC, the first thing he did was institute his “bank holiday” where he created vast new powers of the fed to bail out ailing banks. Subsequently the Glass-Steagall Act created the FDIC, which federally insured deposits from the public and walla, the world liked our money again.

Its not rocket science here. Its happened before, and both times it was resolved with a federal bailout. First with Hoovers Reconstruction Finance Corp, then with FDR’s Bank Holiday and the establishment of the FDIC, and in 89 with creation of the Resolution Trust Corp, which insured deposits of failed thrift institutions.

And it will work here, if we stop all the fear mongering and get about fixing it before more damage is done

  43. The only lenders that were struggling were the ones who bankrolled the bulk of their operations on Subprimes and ARMs, like Countrywide did. Thats where it began.

And what happened was people started crying wolf, talking about the mortgage companies collapsing, which they were not, just the Subprime giants, and even many of them were easily salvagable with a little forethought and some action last October when the collapse began.

Instead the democrats in congress, headed by Pelosi, Reid and others, saw this as an advantage. After all, history shows us that in a failing economy voters usually vote out the incumbent party. So they wanted the crisis to have teeth. And they gave it teeth, by showing theirs.

They began talking “investigations” and new legislation and “crackdowns” on mortgage lenders, all the while knowing that the effect such talk and threats would have, would be to effectively freeze the mortgage lending industry, which is exactly what it did.

That freeze in turn created a crisis for investors who had more than one property under SubPrime and ARM loans that they only intended on reselling and not living in. Many of these investors had half a dozen properties or more, and by February, when lending literally crawled to a stall, they were now starting to fall behind in their payments because they couldn’t sell the homes, and without anything selling, their capital dried up and they could no longer carry the properties.

So what started out as a anticipated nominal increase in Sub Prime defaults got blown way out of proportion by democrats quick to pounce on Cheney and Grahams “new programs”, and the MSM ate it up. After all, if theres one thing that people lap up, is talk of “the big guy sticking it to the little guy”.

But what really happened, is some programs which weren’t that bad, got abused by some firms like Countrywide, and saw a marginal increase beyond what was expected in their default rates. And congress took that information and turned it into a crisis, freezing up the mortgage lenders which in turn made it impossible for investors to sell their investment properties which in turn created a glut in the housing market which in turn drove down prices making many people upside down on their notes which in turn caused more foreclosures when both people with devalued homes couldn’t sell them for the balance of their mortgages and millions of investors caught with properties they couldn’t sell because no one could get the loans.

That in turn caused an employment crash, where millions of workers who’s jobs depend on our housing market, either saw reduced income or lost their jobs altogether. Everyone from the realtor who has homes listed no one wants to see cause they can’t get a mortgage to buy them, to the carpenter working for the builder who is bankrupt because he built homes that he can’t sell, to the guy working in the factory where they used to crank out aluminum siding but now are into forced layoffs, to people at home depot who got layed off because of store closing because of the companies overall losses due to less building, and on and on and on.

Our economy was tied directly to the housing market. If you don’t believe me, go back and read Greenspans warnings for the last few years when he told us “our economy is propped up by our housing market”. Everything relied on the housing market and the democrats, or at least the democrat leaders, knew and exploited this. They know a people usually votes out the incumbent party in an economic downturn so they made sure that right before the elections, we were in an economic downturn.

No one wants to hear this pre election, but its true

  44. The industries fine, its just the foriegn investors pulled out, devaluing our securities, so now, we have to value them, and back them, so that the world will like our money again.

Its not rocket science. And I’m not making s$it up to make a point. Real people are losing real money, and they’re not “greedy fat cats”. And if we don’t act soon, you’re going to get a first hand look at what the great depression looked like, as you line up with the rest of the people in front of your bank, hoping to get 60 cents on the dollar while you all lament about how the “fat cats stuck it to you”.

You’re sticking it too yourselves. Ourselves. The crisis is a mental crisis that is becoming a financial one. Its fear mongering, just like the republicans used to get us into a war.

  45. We should tax stock speculation by 1.5% across the board, which would be so minimal in the pain department -- and cut down on speculation (manipulation) of the market.

We should start valuing companies that are actually making products we believe in instead of falsely driving up stock prices for all the wrong reasons.

  46. "Subsequently the Glass-Steagall Act created the FDIC, which federally insured deposits from the public and walla, the world liked our money again."

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (Reuters) - President Clinton signed into law today a sweeping overhaul of Depression-era banking laws. The measure lifts barriers in the industry and allows banks, securities firms and insurance companies to merge and sell each other’s products.

“This legislation is truly historic,” President Clinton told a packed audience of lawmakers and top financial regulators. “We have done right by the American people.”

The bill repeals parts of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act and the 1956 Bank Holding Company Act to level the domestic playing field for United States financial companies and allow them to compete better in the evolving global financial marketplace.

  49. All that sounds good Lydia, but what we need to do now is back our devalued securites.

Unless we get the mortgage industry moving again nothing is going to work, and foreign investors will continue to pull their monies out of US securities and that means our banks, your bank, Mikes bank, everyones bank, who invested your money and my money into those securities, will be bankrupt.

Just like we saw last week with Washington Mutual.

Banks are starting to go, and if they go, your money goes with them.

This isn't fear and gloom, this is the reality all that fear and gloom talk last October created.

This bailout isn't bailing out the fat cats. Its not even really a bailout. Its backing good securities that foriegners won't back, because our media pushed on by the democrats scared them, and got them to pull out.

This 700 million is our money, and it will show the world we are responsible enough to back our own market.

You, like many, don't understand the problem.

Foriegn investors have pulled their money out of our securites. If we don't back them, the banks, who invested our money in those securites, will fail.

    Like they did in 1928.

Once more, a bailout is a tried and proven method of stabilizing a failing market. It worked in 32. It worked in 33. It worked in 89. And it will work now.

  55. Remember when everyone was calling those securities "worthless"?

Remember? Chris Matthews is still doing it. Saying "these mortgages are worthless". They're not.

But people saying that, scared foriegn investors who in turn pulled out. Now, those securites are highly devalued, and need backing, which is what the 700 billion will do.

They are good mortgages for the most part. Most of them are fine. A small handful are bad. More than before, but merely a drop in the bucket compared to the number of mortgages currently out.

The truth is, MOST Americans are paying their mortgages and are fine. The bulk of these defaults came from the investors who got saddled with homes they cannot sell.

And McCain "suspending his campaign" is just his manager pulling him out of the spotlight because he's making too many gaffs. The idea of a 72 year old senator who can't use a computer or a calculator, suspending his campaign to help with a financial crisis is laughable.

  78. Also Mike, Lydia, don't think I'm blaming everything on the democrats with regards to this crisis. This was also highly due to republican mismanagement, to be sure. It was also due to the Bush tax cuts, which cut the taxes for the top earners and not so much for the average earners.

Another lesson we learned from the Great Depression was that cutting the top tax bracket rates can stall the economy, not help it.

Coolidge cut the tax rate for the wealthiest Americans to a flat 25 percent, right before the depression hit. The Supreme Court also removed a provision for minimum wage for women, lowering the average income of middle class households (women worked in 1925 too, they just didn't get paid very much). The Average American wasn't earning much, with most "middle class" Americans earnling less than a 1000 dollars a year, while the richest Americans were enjoying huge tax breaks.

What this did was cause a glut of products and goods because only the wealthiest were purchasing non essentials. That caused businesses to falter and stocks to begin to fall.

And to fix it, Hoover and Roosevelt both bailed out the banks, but they also did something else.

They raised the tax rate for the wealthiest Americans dramatically and gave breaks to the average American, which in turn, spurned on spending, driving businesses back into the black.

So we learned two important lessons for a healthy economy from the great depression.

    1. Bailing out the banks works.

    2. Cutting taxes for the wealthy, does not. You have to raise them, and cut them for the average people.

    ReplyDelete

  82. Bart - I have to say that was a very thorough and insightful analysis of the entire financial crisis.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Thanks Lydia.

It sounds like the Dems are hammering it out. Its important they right it correctly, and not just hand Bush another blank check. No one wants that.

But if they realize that it was Hoovers slowness in rescuing the banks that perpetuated the crisis, and made the depression so bad. By the Time he instituted the Resolution Trust Corporation to bail out the banks, about 10,000 banks had already failed. While he waited.

We have to be careful here, and not over react, but we need to make sure that no more banks fail.

It sounds like Chris Dodd is going to make it work, if they can keep John McCain out of their hair, lol.

Its so funny he's suddenly canceling interviews and suspending his campaign to rush back to washington, considering hes not even on the finance committee.

He's just making a show. Theres really nothing for him to do here. Bush saved his butt by scheduling that meeting, otherwise he'd be wasting tax payer dollars to fly back to Washington to sit at his desk and twiddle his thumbs.

He's not on the comittee, so theres absolutely NOTHING for him to do.

Now, he gets to go to a meeting for an hour with Bush, so he gets to do something for an hour, then go back to twiddling his tumbs.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Its also important to point out, that when I poo poo ideas for stimulus, its because they distract from the one thing that has to be fixed.

Hoover tried many things before creating the resolution trust corporation and bailing out the banks. All sorts of things.

He tried increasing federal building to create jobs. He tried import tarrifs with the Smoot-Hawley act. He tried forming the National Credit Corp to encourage banks to work together to slow the crisis.

He even tried deporting Mexican illegals and even Mexican Americans, with his "Mexican Repatriation Act", sending some half a million back to Mexico hoping to create more jobs for US citizens. He did all sorts of things to try to avoid bailing out the banks because he felt that would make Americans rely on Government (funny, the government relies on our tax dollar does it not?) so he let America founder for years, until finally, relenting and bailing out the banks. And that worked. That, and increasing taxes on the wealthiest people while reducing them, and providing relief to the middle and lower income Americans.

THATS how you fix an economy. But Bush wants to push huge tax cuts for the wealthy, and piddly, moderate ones for the middle and lower income folks, a policy that helped spurn on the great depression of 1929.

It just goes to show the perils of electing people like Bush, McCain, Palin, who don't know history.

Whats that they say, those who won't learn from history are damned to repeat it?

Obama is looking good in this and the debate issue! Funny, the Repugs created this on their own now they went bipartisanship to share the blame.
It bothers me that this bail out will solve nothing and this is one more thing that will get much worse.
I do think the money should be divvied out in increments and Dem wishes adhered to! I also think McCain is a liar and tried to take credit for Obama's idea and is trying to politicize this for his favor as Bush always does but it will backfire!
It sickens me that access to Palin is so controlled and her debate too they want to put off. She is a damn Neanderthal. I was just listening to her interview with Couric. What a friggen Dits.
Lydia haven't seen Larry in a while is he okay?

  107. I think the real intent may have been to get rid of the Biden/Sarah Poleon debate. McFeeble wants to "postpone" it, and move his first debate with Obama to that date.

Having seen Sarah Poleon with Katie Couric, I understand why he'd be nervous about it.

I can't friggen believe it she is a dits. She actually defended that I mean brain dead! Did you guys see the Letterman video when McCain canceled and then showed up at Couric's? McCain is a lying slime!

    Don't think. Know.

That was the reason. Everyone knows it. They also wanted to postpone Friday nights debate, which they're still trying to do.

McCain is slipping into Dementia, like I said a while back, and he can't keep facts, names, dates, etc, straight in his head.

Knowing that economic issues will be on the agenda with the current crisis they didn't want McCain anywhere near that debate.

Did You guys SEE that babbling idiot beinginterviewed by Katie Couric she went back and forth between a babbling idiot and a trained parrot roboticlly regurgitating rehearsed talking points..............I gotta ask............are THESE TWO THE BEST YOU INBRED REPUGS GOT...........cause your in REAL trouble as a party if thats the case.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The Team of McSame and Palin are a total and utter JOKE............its like watching Captain Crunch and Moon Zappa run for President, and Vice President.

    ReplyDelete
  114. McSame is like Mr Magoo!!!!!!!!!!

  115. Make no mistake people the repugs in Congress axed the bailout plan to give McSame cover.............McSame NEEDED an excuse to NOT GO TO THE DEBATE Tomorrow...........McSame SAID he WOULD NOT go to the debate UNLESS the bailout deal was in place and lo and behold an allegedly doner deal falls apart due to the repugs with McSame smirking in the background.............but McSame went there to SAVE us and get a deal done................yeah right and i have a bridge to NO WHERE TO SELL YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  116. McSame NEEDED his EXCUSE to chicken out of the debates and the repug Congress gave the slimy partisan coward just thye excuse he NEEDED...................Country First.........Yeah right.................i'm sick and tired of people lavishing praise on McSame and saying he is a good man, or an honorable man or a Maverick...............maybe at one time he was an honorable man or a good man ............but slimy liars and dishonest opportunists are NOT GOOD OR HONORABLE men and calling him those things only serves to inpugn our own credibility and judgement.

KABUL, Afghanistan - Pakistani troops fired at American reconnaissance helicopters near the Afghan-Pakistan border Thursday, and ground troops then exchanged fire, the U.S. military said.

  118. If McSame wants to hide like gutless coward...........then Obama NEEDS to seize the moment and take the entire segment of free air time to get out his message unopposed and unchallenged.................McSame and Palin are BOTH to cowardly to go toe to toe with Obama and Biden just as I said.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Obama's liutenants and minions NEED to start labeling McSame as a slimy cowardly partisan opportunists that will say and do ANYTHING to become President..............REMEMBER what those tactics did to Hillary Clinton?

  120. The feces is rapidly approaching the spinning circular rotational device;

Government Seizes WaMu and Sells Some Assets

Washington Mutual, the giant lender that came to symbolize the excesses of the mortgage boom, was seized by federal regulators on Thursday night, in what is by far the largest bank failure in American history.

Hope the reich wingers hold out to get MORE deregulation like they currently are in the house.

Tomorrow will be bad on Wall Street after the bailout crash and this seizure.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Must have been bad not to wait till after 5PM on Friday to do this.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Mike. McCains many things, but a gutless coward is not one of them.

When his time came to leave the Hanoi Hilton, he said "I'll leave when everyone leaves". That took a courage like few possess.

Which is why I'm so mad at the right wing for putting him up there. He's slipping into Age Onset Dementia, and he cannot remember events, names, facts, dates, scripts, etc. So his manager pulled him after about 47 gaffs last week, because he knows a debate with Obama will be miserable, and destroy his chances.

McCains losing his faculties and Palin never had any, so they want to hide them and hope to win on reputation and name recognition alone.

McCains a good man, deep down, and he has the heart of a lion, which is why this sucks. He deserves better than being here, at this time in his life. He deserves to be quietly winding down his political career and preparing for a comfortable retirement, something he earned after 7 long years in Viet Namese Prison camp.

He belongs no where near this campaign and he's not fit for leadership at this time, but he also doesn't deserve to be called a coward.

    I know you understand.

    ReplyDelete
  123. And if you want an idea of just how mentally incompetent McCain is, consider this.

Earlier this afternoon Congress announced they had reached an agreement.

Then McCain flew in and met with them, and 2 hours later the republicans walked out and the deal was broken.

    :|

Aren't you glad McCain suspended his campaign so he could come down and screw everything up?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Stock market climbed today on the news of the deal, then McCains meddling broke up the deal so look for another slide in the morning.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Bart maybe they need to get Warren Buffet to negotiate a deal for us all, he seems to be able to do it, and make money while he does it.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I would much rather seem them bring in guys like Buffet, Gates, Perot, and others who know something about finance and business and making money, rather than flying in McCain and Obama for a photo op.

Obama went along because his President asked him. But he also pointed out in his amazingly subtle and tactful way that he knew his being there wasn't helping, and would rather not be there.

Neither of them are on the Banking or finance committees so they're just not up to speed on whats been going on in those comittees and most of the day was spent bringing them up to speed. McCain made a photo op out of this. Obama went along because you don't say no when your President calls you to Washington but he said tonight he knew it was not helpful for them to be there.

  127. Wheres Steve Jobs? Wheres Bill Gates? Where Warren Buffet? Wheres Paul Allen? Wheres all the other people who know how to make money in this country. I mean the really smart ones.

Gates is one of the smartest there is. Hands down. People don't realize how smart the guy really is. He just gave away half of his wealth to charity and now is back on the worlds most richest list.

The guys a genius, and he could help here.

Still, we need to back those securities. Nothing will work until we back those securities.

  128. Bart McSame certainly WAS a courageous and honorable man..............the FACTS though are clear that that is no longer the case.............its a fact he is afraid to debate Obama and Palin is afraid to debate Biden.........and its a fact McSame has degenerated into a senile chronic liar and slimy partisan opportunist...................ok i'll AMMEND my pREVIOUS statement maybe you are right and mcSame and palin are NOT cowards...........maybe they are just to senile and/or stupid to realize how out of their league and overmatched they are.

Its GREAT McSame served his country and i;m sure he WAS a courageous and honorable man 3 or 4 decades ago.............but the opperative word is "WAS" a partisan opportunist and chronic liar that puts political gain over the good of the country is NOT a good man.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Bottom line is McSame KILLED this deal for political gain..........and now the economy could implode.............MILLIONS could lose their jobs, homes, life savings etc..........so McSame has a chance to steal an election and gain power................That is not an honorable man that puts country first...........thats KARL ROVE!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  130. You KNOW I didnt support this deal originally the Way Paulson wrote but I supported it after the revisions and was hopeful...............that hope is GONE because of McSame people are going to lose their jobs and life savings because of McSame..............thats not a good man or a Maverick or a honrable man.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Problem is the repugs WANT to Kill the bailout, so does it really matter how many smart people you bring in................did you SEE McSame sitting there smirking like a pompous Cheshire Cat.........he thinks he's a slickster just like GWB does.

I doubt very seriously McCains afraid to debate Obama. Its his managers who are afraid and they tell him what to do, where to go and what to say.

As for Palin, she's too stupid to be afraid. Once again her handlers are smart enough to know the less she says on camera, the better.

  135. At first I thought they were smart for picking Palin. I figured they vetted her a little.

Now I see they were just desperate.

    Palin was a Hail Mary.

    And they dropped it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Mike
Palin is an idiot and showed at that interview. She actually defended that stupid Russian statement. Also it isn't talked about but McCain dissed Letterman to be interviewed by Couric and I am sure he greased the skids for Paling. Anyway Couric discussed later hoe ridiculous her answers were. She is a freaking Neanderthal! What the hell is wrong with Americans?

    ReplyDelete
  137. Im still holding to the belief that McCain is trying to lose the election.

  138. Well, whos giving odds on McCain showing up tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  139. He screwed up.

If he shows up it will look like he caved to pressure and was intimidated by Obama.

If he doesn't show up, he'll look like he's afraid to debate Obama.

    His campaign managers an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Looks like the debates on. McCain is heading on down now.

So his big hype about "suspending" his campaign was a load of crap.
