McCAIN DIVORCES HIMSELF FROM HIS OWN PARTY

From a reader on Andrew Sullivan's blog AndrewSullivan.com
Good God! I watched that video of Palin at her church through twice. The Assemblies of God are Pentecostals, of course, the real "holy rollers"--ecstatic experience of the Godhead in your own body, rolling in the aisles, talking in tongues. When I got some exposure to them, they were extremely conservative and strict (no dancing, no lipstick, no short skirts) but Palin is evidence of how they've mainstreamed themselves.

I wonder if the average reader would hear the references she makes and understand them? Master's commissions--this is a program they run to evangelize non-believers, in Alaska especially native Americans. Notice that our foreign and defense policy is simply God-given - not to be weighed, studied, deliberated, only to be implemented as we're taught by our betters. And notice that her political program - build a sports complex, a pipeline, change a tax bill, all likewise simply becomes a matter of religion.

For twenty years the most hardcore Christianists have been held in the background. Now one of them is the vice presidential nominee next to a man who's 72 and a repeated cancer survivor. This is mortifying. How could John McCain do this to our country!

McCAIN DIVORCES HIMSELF FROM BUSH-CHENEY-ROVE PARTY OF CORRUPTION

From Andew Sullivan's blog a reader writes:
Immediately after (McCain's) speech, I remarked to my wife that the tone of it was of a person looking back on a career, not beginning a new one.

Andrew Sullivan: What makes me sad is how so many young people have no idea any more what conservatism could mean if it were true to itself. (I gave it my best shot in my book, "The Conservative Soul.") But the corruption of this party is so deep - morally, ethically, philosophically - McCain can't do it.

I'm sure conservatism will one day recover - because it is right about the main issues: government needs to be kept in its place, taxes should be low and budgets balanced, individuals should be able to pursue their dreams as free of government control as possible, families do matter and need to be free from government interference, free markets and enterprise are the only guarantees of prosperity, moral choices - and their consequences - should be faced by the individual responsibly, and we have to be strong in our defense and prudent in foreign policy. This is the conservatism I still believe in. Deep down, I'm sure McCain does too. But it will only come from the ashes of this fundamentalist, mean-spirited, parochial, arrogant, big-spending, irresponsible shambles of a party. We have to repudiate the party of Rove and Abramoff and Romney and Dobson and Cheney and Bush II.

Burn it down and start over.

  1. So McCain isn't running as a republican or is he claiming all the people who supported George W Bush the last Four years just aren't supporting him now?

This LOSING campaign of McCain will be the beginning of the fire which burns it down.

This campaign is the right wings swan song, and they haven't a clue how much America wants something different then their old tired same old same old.

  3. Unless the right wing finds something besides tired old dishonest attacks and refried meme's from the 1980's they will continue to lose.

They are so set in their ways and so stubborn it might take a decade for them to realize TIME has passed them by.

  4. Good points Clif.

Oh, I love the way McCain stresses public volunteer work, organizing in your communities to help each other -- yet Palin condemned COMMUNITY ORGANIZING the night before! They are speaking out of both sides of their mouths and it's all doublespeak.

I just can't see McCain winning a debate with Obama. 1 million people will be watching (at least.)

And honestly, as a mother, my mind is on my children 90% of the day. I would not trust a woman who has no Constitutional Law or Foreign Policy COLLEGE education to be adept at making life and death decisions, with her mind on her 2 special needs children at home - one being her teenage daughter.

Not only will she be distracted (as the so-called party of family values they sure don't have a good track record of putting family first) but I don't want to have to wait for her to study up on international relations! What is she going to study, the Clif Notes?

Would you trust this person (who doesn't care about our environment!!!) and doesn't care about endangered species and doesn't understand renewable energies -- and who loves guns -- to be in charge of the free world?

They lied by the way - she never made any "executive decisions" regarding commanding the Alaska National Guard!

  14. You know what is MOST damning about the Republican national convention?

The fact they refused to name he who must not be named.

They went to great lengths NOT to say much about that outcast of the party, even though in the last decade his name was mentioned numerous times in the national press and he could get on the MSM airwaves almost any time he wanted.

The second most damning part of the convention was the fact they seemed to refuse to celebrate either George W Bush or Richard Cheney, even though they have lead the party the last 8 years and "won" to national elections.

Is there something republicans are ashamed of?

Why would the republican party show so much disdain for the current president and Vice president?

Even the democratic party had Jimmy Carter make an appearance, and Bill Clinton got a prime time speaking slot.

From the looks of it, the democratic party still embraces Carter and of course Clinton.

The republican party it's CURRENT sitting president and vice president not so much.

    That is curious.

They didn't damn him with faint praise, they damnned him with silence, which in many ways is worse.

George W Bush and Richard Cheney he who must not be named, ... along with Tom Delay, Bill Frist, George Allen, Rick Santarum, Jack Abramoff, Donald Rumsfeld ..... it's like the GOP is trying to disown them and claim they never were behind ALL of them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The last time a national party in a presidential convention didn't honor a sitting president was 1968, when LBJ didn't appear in Chicago, but given the goon squad mayor Daley deployed maybe LBJ had a good reason to stay away.

  16. OH right the RNC payed the Police in Minnesota 10,000,000 for insurance in case their GOON SQUAD got in trouble for constitutional violations, like arresting members of the press, excessive force, and illegal arrest.

They had it for about a week in parts of Minneapolis ....

  17. August’s unemployment rate increased past what it was initially forecast, rising to 6.1%.

But even more scathing is the fact that the misery index—unemployment aggregated with inflation—also soared to its the highest level since 1991, when George H. W. Bush was in office.

Any foole named Bush in power is NOT good for YOUR bottom line it seems.

  18. Time for a reality check;

You know things are really going awfully wrong in the global economy when Wall Street plunges like a mob made-man with cement feet in the East River, and then that still is not the no.1 story of the day in the global economy (and global it is, alright; decouple my derrière).

For that matter, the news on the wrecked US economy doesn’t even make it to second place. Or third. Even with job figures black and blue and bleak all over, with yet another record high set in foreclosure numbers, with financial stocks being hammered, and downgraded to bathroom tissue, there are other stories that are more important today.

In third place, we find the fallen empire of Albion. Automobile sales these days are on par with those in 1966, when the majority of Britons didn’t even own a car. And it’s not just sales: don’t forget that Britain’s auto manufacturing industry is a major employer.

Or rather, make that "was". Millions in England now face negative equity in their homes, and prices are nowhere near a low. The Bank of England is under pressure to set up another "emergency" liquidity lending window for the City banks, but even if it does, what will it look like?

With most UK banks deeply indebted to the ECB as well, and government finances in a black hole, the BoE’s hands are tied. Which is certain to bankrupt at least a handful of the banks. The days when Britain could afford a Northern Rock bail-out are over.

Moving on to second place, for the silver medal. It goes to the global economy itself. Besides the long-term life support cases, the US and UK, this is the moment that dozens of other countries in the world can no longer hide their very painful hemorraging.

When China’s central bank runs out of money, it’s time to pay attention. It won’t sink yet, but it will have to raise additional capital. Problem is, so will everybody else, from central banks through commercial and investment banks to industries in every sector in every country of the economy.

Not only does that competition make it much harder and more expensive to raise capital, to add grave insult to grave injury, it happens at a point in time when available capital and credit are shrinking. And none too slowly either. There are parties out there who need to roll-over long term or short-term debt, and who won’t succeed in doing it. Simple as that. End of story.

In Korea, Thailand, Japan, and undoubtedly the rest of Asia, the -bad, bad, bad!- financial news is closely tied to politics. There is very little patience with politicians who lead their people into poverty. Take note, Gordon Brown.

And if you take a look at the economies, especially the stock exchanges, in the BRIC quartet of Brazil, Russia, India and China, you will see huge losses. Which lead increasingly to social upheaval. Which in turn will be one of the main news stories for the years to come, and not just in these far-away lands: it will soon come to a street near you. Count on it.

That said, let’s go to number one, our hands-down gold medal winner for today’s News Story of the Day. Any idea? Been paying attention?

Our No.1 is the Unwinding of the Yen Carry Trade.

Yes, that may come as a bit of a surprise to you, it’s a mostly unknown competitor after all, which is no doubt largely due to its shyness. Allow me to explain.

The Bank of Japan has for years kept its key interest rate close to zero percent. It’s still at 0.5%. The result has been that everyone with substantial assets and investments to manage, has borrowed yen at the close to zero rate, and invested the money in other countries with -often much- higher interest rates.

That is what you call free money. This has been going on for more than ten years. And this is in all likelihood the prime reason for the entire global asset and credit bubble, the one that is now joining its maker.

A good example: through the past decade, plenty of stories have been told of real estate in countries like Latvia and Hungary that was financed through mortgages denominated in yen.

But the yen carry trade fairy tale is now grinding to a halt. That means that for all of the major players in the world finance system, their no.1 source of cheap credit is gone, and precisely at a time when they need it most. The world's central bankers have tried for the past two years to prolong and revive it, but all attempts have failed; and this time it's for good.

What makes this much more hurtful than you might think at first glance is that the borrowed yen were not just invested, they were used to leverage investment gambles 10, 20, 60 times. Which inevitably leads to the fact that if the yen appreciates 10 or 20% (or G-d forbid more) against the US dollar or the Euro, the game is over.

And that is what’s happening: the yen gains vs other world currencies. And all the players have to leave the casino, if only because they fear that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates to, for instance, 2%. That is still very low, you’d say, but then you realize that interest rates due on borrowed yen would go up 300% if it happened.

It may seem a bit counterintuitive, but what unwinds the trade is the perception that the yen is safe to invest in. It starts to make sense once you realize that the 0.5% interest rate has kept the yen -artificially- very low and undervalued. And of course, as demand for the yen goes up, so does the currency itself. Supply and demand.

The total amount of outstanding derivatives in the world economy has reached a guesstimated $800 trillion, about 15-20 times the annual world GDP. Much of it has been financed through the yen carry trade. That is why this is the No.1 financial news story of the day. To top that, the Dow Jones would have to lose 20% in one day.

Trust me this once: It’s time to check your levees.

Yen Rises Against Euro, Dollar as Carry Trade Unwinds on Deepening Recession Concerns

The yen climbed to the highest in more than a year against the euro on concern the credit-market slump will lead the world into a recession, prompting investors to sell higher-yielding assets funded in Japan.

    Jobs Figures Hurt All Over

August's dismal employment numbers signal a bleak economic outlook.

On Friday, the U.S. Labor Department reported an unemployment rate that floated up to 6.1%, as nonagricultural employers slashed yet another 84,000 jobs. The figure marks the highest jobless rate in five years, following eight consecutive months of cuts. Pink slips were being handed out across industries and sectors.

"The most important detail is the substantial increase in the unemployment rate over a six-month period, which was the largest in 25 years," said Carl Riccadonna, senior U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank, "and such a stark backdrop is not the stuff of a solid economy or a Fed that will raise rates."

Record 1.2 million US homes hit by foreclosure

Loans in foreclosure have doubled over the past year, while delinquency rates continue to soar. A record 1.249 million homes were in foreclosure during the second quarter of 2008, according to a report released Friday by the Mortgage Bankers Association.

And new foreclosure proceedings were started on about 490,000 of the 45 million home mortgages serviced by MBA members. That's up 9% from the 448,000 starts recorded in the previous quarter. Mortgage delinquencies continued their grim rise during the three months ended June 30, with 2.9 million homeowners falling behind on their loan payments, apart from those already in foreclosure.

Dow To Extend Drop Below 20%

The bear is back. He’d been gone for a while - at least a month - but the bear is back, and the victims of his attacks have littered the Street this week. With Thursday’s drop of 345 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average once again tumbled 20% below the October highs at just over 14,000 points.

It initially crept into the bear’s cave in early July (most research would regard a 20% decline from the top as the definition of a bear, though there is always some well-schooled equivocation about the details, such as length of time spent scarpering below the 20% level). It reached its nadir July 15 at a 22% decline, then effectively emerged from the bear cave - seemingly for good - in the waning days of July.

From the July 15 trough through the rebound that reached its apex Aug. 11, the Dow added nearly 8%, but since then - including the two straight dispiriting losses Wednesday and Thursday of this week - the industrial average relinquished 5%, and sank back so it was more than 20% off the October record.

Detroit bailout may be around the corner

Plunging auto sales, high gas prices and election year politics could help convince Congress to approve a $50 billion loan package to embattled U.S. automakers that Detroit's Big Three claim is key to their future success.

On Wednesday, General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler LLC reported monthly sales declines of at least 20% from a year ago, as American car buyers continued to turn away from SUVs and pickups and towards more fuel efficient car models. The Big Three are now in the process of closing truck assembly lines and rushing to catch up with hybrid and other fuel efficient offerings from Toyota Motor and Honda Motor.

But with GM and Ford saddled with junk bond debt ratings and privately-held Chrysler with the thinnest capital cushion of the three, Detroit is caught in a credit squeeze that will make such investment difficult if not impossible.
"Funding such a shift is a tough lift even under optimum circumstances," said GM spokesman Greg Martin. "The credit markets are suffering. You had this seismic inversion of the market where no one wants to buy a full-size truck."

Greenspan: Fed isn’t a ‘magical piggy bank’

Troubled by the Bear Stearns debacle, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is advocating a new way of dealing with government bailouts of companies whose sudden collapse could wreak havoc on the country's economic and financial stability.

Greenspan says Congress needs to give the government new powers to handle troubled companies to minimize any potential losses to American taxpayers. A self-described libertarian Republican, Greenspan has a reputation for being wary of giving the government extra powers. However, in crisis situations, there needs to be a clear process for handling bailouts, rather than depending on the Fed to do so, he reckons.

China’s Central Bank Is in Need of Capital

China’s central bank is in a bind. It has been on a buying binge in the United States over the last seven years, snapping up roughly $1 trillion worth of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed debt issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Those investments have been declining sharply in value when converted from dollars into the strong yuan, casting a spotlight on the central bank’s tiny capital base. The bank’s capital, just $3.2 billion, has not grown during the buying spree, despite private warnings from the International Monetary Fund.

Now the central bank needs an infusion of capital. Central banks can, of course, print more money, but that would stoke inflation. Instead, the People’s Bank of China has begun discussions with the finance ministry on ways to shore up its capital, said three people familiar with the discussions who insisted on anonymity because the subject is delicate in China.

Brazil, Russia, India and China Bubble On Verge Of Collapse

After a dizzying expansion, the BRIC bubble appears ready to burst. Share prices in Brazil, Russia, India and China -- the so-called BRICs -- have been declining sharply because of the global credit crunch and military tensions, likely forcing Japanese retail investors to change their investment strategies.

In the past year, the Shanghai A-Share index has plunged 60%, India's Sensex index 33%, Russia's RTS index 32% and Brazil's Bovespa Index 25%. These falls were triggered by the global credit crunch that stems from the subprime loan problem in the U.S. Investment funds that have suffered losses have been withdrawing their money from these emerging economies.

These nations also face the risk of inflation due to high growth, abundance of money flows and higher prices of natural resources. As a result, their central banks have tightened their monetary policies, spurring a decline in asset prices. However, there are greater issues than these economic problems. The BRICs now face increasing country risks that existed long before their recent economic ascendency.

If you don't think the above is a problem go ahead and vote for John McSame and his clueless sidekick who want to continue the policies of the Bush Administration, and has Whiner Phil to tell us all to suck it up as the crash rolls on .... but if you see any real problems above maybe just maybe you want REAL change and not the latest RNC gimmick.

"The “Sarah Palin’s Drunken Daughter” e-mail - which began making the rounds yesterday morning - quickly ended up in thousands of e-mail inboxes across the state, including e-mail addresses at the South Carolina Department of Education, Department of Mental Healthm Midlands Technical College, the City of Columbia and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.

One Blue Cross Blue Shield employee, who forwarded the message to at least a dozen of her co-workers, referred to Palin’s daughter as a “drunk heifer,” and a “lil’ loose.”

Within hours, the e-mails were being forwarded to individuals and businesses all over the state.

FITSNews has confirmed that the five pictures attached to the original e-mail (included below) are not, in fact, images of Bristol Palin, and we have sent an e-mail to the alleged author of that e-mail requesting additional information regarding the contents of her widely-read missive.

Obviously, it’s one thing to spread trashy, misleading e-mails about a vice-presidential candidate, but an underage minor? On a state-owned computer? During taxpayer business hours?"

WHY, on the night of the RNC's BIG NIGHT, with a SITTING REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT, was that President NO WHERE TO BE SEEN OR HEARD???

And WHY, was the VICE PRESIDENT NO WHERE TO BE SEEN OR HEARD???

And why was NEITHER OF THEM MENTIONED???

Answer that one big mouth, THEN you can talk.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yo duncetron it ain't gonna get better then this;

    Why the media should apologize

On behalf of the media, I would like to say we are sorry.

On behalf of the elite media, I would like to say we are very sorry.

We have asked questions this week that we should never have asked.

We have asked pathetic questions like: Who is Sarah Palin? What is her record? Where does she stand on the issues? And is she is qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

We have asked mean questions like: How well did John McCain know her before he selected her? How well did his campaign vet her? And was she his first choice?

    Bad questions. Bad media. Bad.

It is not our job to ask questions. Or it shouldn’t be. To hear from the pols at the Republican National Convention this week, our job is to endorse and support the decisions of the pols.

Sarah Palin hit the nail on the head Wednesday night (and several in the audience wish she had hit some reporters on the head instead) when she said: “I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.”

But where did we go wrong with Sarah Palin? Let me count the ways:

First, we should have stuck to the warm, human interest stuff like how she likes mooseburgers and hit an important free throw at her high school basketball tournament even though she had a stress fracture.

Second, we should have stuck to the press release stuff like how she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere (after she supported it).

Third, we should never have strayed into the other stuff. Like when The Washington Post recently wrote: “Palin is under investigation by a bipartisan state legislative body. … Palin had promised to cooperate with the legislative inquiry, but this week she hired a lawyer to fight to move the case to the jurisdiction of the state personnel board, which Palin appoints.”

Why go there? What trees does that plant?

Fourth, we should stop making with all the questions already. She gave a really good speech. And why go beyond that? As we all know, speeches cannot be written by others and rehearsed for days. They are true windows to the soul.

Unless they are delivered by Barack Obama, that is. In which case, as Palin said Wednesday, speeches are just a “cloud of rhetoric.”

Fifth, we should stop reporting on the families of the candidates. Unless the candidates want us to.

Sarah Palin wanted the media to report on her teenage son, Track, who enlisted in the Army on Sept. 11, 2007, and soon will deploy to Iraq.

Sarah Palin did not want the media to report on her teenage daughter, Bristol, who is pregnant and unmarried.

Sarah Palin thinks that one is good for her campaign and one is not, and that the media should report only on what is good for her campaign. That is our job, and that is our duty. If that is not actually in the Constitution, it should be. (And someday may be.)

The official theme of the convention’s third day was “prosperity,” but the unofficial theme was “the media are really, really awful.”

Even Mike Huckabee, who campaigned for president this year by saying “I am a conservative, but I am not mad at anybody,” discovered Wednesday night that he is mad at somebody.

“I’d like to thank the elite media for doing something,” Huckabee said, “that, quite frankly, I didn’t think could be done: unify the Republican Party and all of America in support of John McCain and Sarah Palin.”

And could that be the real point of the attacks on the media? To unify the Republican Party?

No, that is simply the cynical, media view.

Though as Lily Tomlin says, “No matter how cynical I get, it’s just never enough to keep up.”

I couldn’t resist that. For which I am sorry.

    but worse MUCH worse.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yeah, the media tore them down. It didn't have a damn thing to do with their domestic, foreign, or economic policies. It was also the media that painted anybody who wasn't a white Evangelical as some kind of Satanic handmaiden.

The people who ran the underground railroad were community organizers,

The people who lead the fight against Jim Crow were community organizers,

In many southern small town community organizers had to stand up to the KKK since members of it were on the city council, some even mayors,

We don't say all that Muslims are lunatics because a segment of them are/blow themselves to smithereens, or at least we shouldn't. If you have problems with Palin, by all means, voice them and voice them vociferously if you must. I just think that you're treading a little thin here with the religion component. That's all.

Just like we have no problem with Muslims. Just the Muslims who preach war.

  163. This is interesting;

    Commentary: Israel of the Caucasus

NATO guarantees that an attack against one member country is an attack against all are no longer what they used to be. Had Georgia been inside NATO, a number of European countries would no longer be willing to consider it an attack against their own soil.

For Russia, the geopolitical stars were in perfect alignment. The United States was badly overstretched and had no plausible way to talk tough without coming across as empty rhetoric. American resources have been drained by the Iraq and Afghan wars, and the war on terror. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov put it, Washington must now choose between its "pet project" Georgia and a partnership with Moscow.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili evidently thought the United States would come to his side militarily if Russian troops pushed him back into Georgia after ordering an attack last Aug. 8 on the breakaway province of South Ossetia. And when his forces were mauled by Russia's counterattack, bitter disappointment turned to anger. Along with Abkhazia, Georgia lost two provinces.

Georgia also had a special relationship with Israel that was mostly under the radar. Georgian Defense Minister Davit Kezerashvili is a former Israeli who moved things along by facilitating Israeli arms sales with U.S. aid. "We are now in a fight against the great Russia," he was quoted as saying, "and our hope is to receive assistance from the White House because Georgia cannot survive on its own."

The Jerusalem Post on Aug. 12 reported, "Georgian Prime Minister Vladimir Gurgenidze made a special call to Israel Tuesday morning to receive a blessing from one of the Haredi community's most important rabbis and spiritual leaders, Rabbi Aaron Leib Steinman. 'I want him to pray for us and our state,'" he was quoted.

Israel began selling arms to Georgia seven years ago. U.S. grants facilitated these purchases. From Israel came former minister and former Tel Aviv Mayor Roni Milo, representing Elbit Systems, and his brother Shlomo, former director general of Military Industries. Israeli UAV spy drones, made by Elbit Maarahot Systems, conducted recon flights over southern Russia, as well as into nearby Iran.

In a secret agreement between Israel and Georgia, two military airfields in southern Georgia had been earmarked for the use of Israeli fighter-bombers in the event of pre-emptive attacks against Iranian nuclear installations. This would sharply reduce the distance Israeli fighter-bombers would have to fly to hit targets in Iran. And to reach Georgian airstrips, the Israeli air force would fly over Turkey.

The attack ordered by Saakashvili against South Ossetia the night of Aug. 7 provided the Russians the pretext for Moscow to order Special Forces to raid these Israeli facilities where some Israeli drones were reported captured.

At a Moscow news conference, Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, Russia's deputy chief of staff, said the extent of Israeli aid to Georgia included "eight types of military vehicles, explosives, landmines and special explosives for clearing minefields." Estimated numbers of Israeli trainers attached to the Georgian army range from 100 to 1,000. There were also 110 U.S. military personnel on training assignments in Georgia. Last July 2,000 U.S. troops were flown in for "Immediate Response 2008," a joint exercise with Georgian forces.

Details of Israel's involvement were largely ignored by Israeli media lest they be interpreted as another blow to Israel's legendary military prowess, which took a bad hit in the Lebanese war against Hezbollah two years ago. Georgia's top diplomat in Tel Aviv complained about Israel's "lackluster" response to his country's military predicament and called for "diplomatic pressure on Moscow." According to the Jerusalem Post, the Georgian was told "the address for that type of pressure is Washington."

Haaretz reported Georgian Minister Temur Yakobashvili -- who is Jewish, the newspaper said -- told Israeli army radio that "Israel should be proud of its military which trained Georgian soldiers" because he explained rather implausibly, "a small group of our soldiers were able to wipe out an entire Russian military division, thanks to Israeli training."

The Tel Aviv-Tbilisi military axis was agreed at the highest levels with the approval of the Bush administration. The official liaison between the two entities was Reserve Brig. Gen. Gal Hirsch who commanded Israeli forces on the Lebanese border in July 2006. He resigned from the army after the Winograd Commission flayed Israel's conduct of its Second Lebanon War. Hirsch was also blamed for the seizure of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah.

Israeli personnel, working for "private" companies with close ties to the Israel Defense Forces, also trained Georgian soldiers in house-to-house fighting.

That Russia assessed these Israeli training missions as U.S.-approved is a given. The United States was also handicapped by a shortage of spy-in-the-sky satellite capability, already overextended by the Iraq and Afghan wars. Neither U.S. nor Georgian intelligence knew Russian forces were ready with an immediate and massive response to the Georgian attack Moscow knew was coming. Russian double agents ostensibly working for Georgia most probably egged on the military fantasies of the impetuous Saakashvili's "surprise attack" plans.

Saakashvili was convinced that by sending 2,000 of his soldiers to serve in Iraq (who were immediately flown home by the United States when Russia launched a massive counterattack into Georgia), he would be rewarded for his loyalty. He could not believe President Bush, a personal friend, would leave him in the lurch. Georgia, as Saakashvili saw his country's role, was the "Israel of the Caucasus."

The Tel Aviv-Tbilisi military axis appears to have been cemented at the highest levels, according to YNet, the Israeli electronic daily. But whether the IAF can still count on those air bases to launch bombing missions against Iran's nuke facilities is now in doubt.

Iran comes out ahead in the wake of the Georgian crisis. Neither Russia nor China is willing to respond to a Western request for more and tougher sanctions against the mullahs. Iran's European trading partners are also loath to squeeze Iran. The Russian-built, 1,000-megawatt Iranian reactor in Bushehr is scheduled to go online early next year.

A combination of Putin and oil has put Russia back on the geopolitical map of the world. Moscow's oil and gas revenue this year is projected at $201 billion -- a 13-fold increase since Putin succeeded Boris Yeltsin eight years ago. Not shabby for a wannabe superpower on the comeback trail.

One possible alternative to this is Israel attacks from home bases, and uses Georgian bases as the place they fly to after the attack, so Iran is watching their western border as Israeli jest fly north.

Any way it seems to be screwed up by the Aug 7th attack by Georgia on South Otessia.

So the meddling of McInsane's favorite foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunenman screwed up the Cheney-Israeli-neo-con plan to Use Georgian bases to attack Iran?

Might THAT be why Richard Cheney was in the caucus instead of Minneapolis?

Was Cheney trying to rescue as much of that plan as possible?

BTW (according to Pat Lang) Cheney was in Azerbaijan after his visit to Georgia. He got a chilly reception. Annoyed by that, he declined to attend a dinner given in his honor. How rude is that? Rude.

Cheney is a dick where ever he goes it seems.

  164. Bartlebee, no, not reading impaired. FYI, I have problems with Christians who preach war also. That's not the issue. The issue is whether to stereotype people from a religion/division of a religion. I say that we shouldn't, that we should judge the individual instead; the individual Pentocostal, the individual polygimist, the individual Jehova's Witness, etc.. That's all.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Will it's kind of hard to judge an individual when the right wing collective masses has reacted like lemmings to the play book Lee Atwater and Rove used, among other extreme right wingers use, (Rush Hannity, O'Rielly, Savage, Coulter.)

They travel in the same circles and sell the same bullsh*t to people who WANT to believe it.

You want examples, the purple band aids at the 2004 RNC, which they would screech like wounded banshees if any single democrat did the same this year.

There was band aids on almost everyone, trashing a veteran for his service.

In 2004 the anti-gay message sold better then the states right code for anti equality message they used from 1968 to 2000.

You can't judge the individual in that case because it is mass movement, if they had to do it ALL by themselves, they probably wouldn't try, but they get together and feel it's OK because others are doing it.

It's the same with the fringe right wing Pentecostal assemblies of God movement.

They twist the meanings of Christ and biblical passages to make themselves feel better about doing what they always wanted to do in the first place.

    It was true with slavery,

It was true with Jim Crow,

It is true when they wanted a war,

    and it is true today.

Mass movements based of twisted religion and idealogical driven politics are their stock and trade.

They spin facts and twist everything so it fits there for us or again' us mentality.

They attack anybody who opposes their rigorous demands that their rules and ideology is paramount, and anybody who refuses to accept it are traitors, hippies communists or worse.

So in their world view which has dominated this culture since the early 1980's either you fall in line or your an enemy.

Extreme fundamentalists everywhere use the same system, just slightly different ways of trying to enforce it.

    ReplyDelete
  166. You can't judge mass movements especially extreme ones individual by individual, those who have tried historically end up victims of those mass movements.

And I say thats a straw argument you're creating to try and act superior and lecture Lydia on something that she is not doing.

If a church preaches war as a church, then calling them warmongers isn't "stereotyping".

    Thats YOUR straw argument.

Thats simply commenting on a policy of a given church.

For example, until the mid 1970's, one could call the Mormons Racist. Why? Because they banned Black people from holding office in their church, based solely on the color of their skin. Thus, until the 1970's, Mormons were racist.

And the Assembly of God Church, along with other Protestant sects teach war now, including the Southern Baptists. Thus, they are a mockery to their own belief system, Christianity, which came preaching peace, not war.

You're the one "stereotyping" by accusing anyone who correctly labels an organization by ITS OWN ACTIONS and DOCTRINES according to those actions and doctrines, of stereotyping.

Its a strawman argument. A fabrication.

Once more, for the guy who is "not" reading impaired, WE JUDGE THEM BY WHAT THEY PREACH. And the Assembly of God Church preaches war from the pulpit and that makes them warmongers and essentially "anti-Christs" if you will, because the teach the exact opposite of what Christ taught.

When they stop preaching war and start preaching Christianity again, then they'll be Christians again.

In new polls out today, 58% of voters view Palin favorably, which is up from 52% less than a week ago. Even more surprising this morning is the fact that Obama and John McCain are each viewed favorably by 57% of voters, but Palin is viewed favorably by 58%, which is better than both Presidential candidates. Joe Biden is viewed favorably by 48%.

    celerity favoritism polls,

During their September 2 and September 3 coverage of the Republican National Convention, MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News each dedicated more on-air time — significantly more in most cases — to speeches and other official Republican convention programming during the most-watched portions of their coverage than each channel dedicated to official convention programming during the same times on comparable nights of the Democratic National Convention one week earlier.
