STRANGE GOINGS ON

Now Bush wants low-income children to have no health insurance? Can this be possible? Aside from bankrupting our nation, lying us into war with three different, changing versions of lies, usurping the Constitution with 750 "secretive signing statements" giving himself absolute power with no Congressional oversight; manipulating intelligence in the rush to war; declaring global permanent war in order to usrurp our rights; war profiteering (over 12 billion of taxpayer "reconstruction money" was stolen in Iraq by Haliburton ghost employees; illegally wiretapping us, allowing TORTURE of human beings by usurping Habeas Corpus; not helping the people of New Orleans during Katrina; declaring himself the sole 'decider' of who is a terrorist sympathizer; being able to confiscate U.S. citizens' property, money and computers without allowing the citizen a right to legal counsel; appeasing Osama Bin Laden by quietly closing our military bases in Saudi Arabia; not pursuing Osama Bin Laden after saying he would never stop pursuing Bin Laden; putting people in secret prisons; advising his advisers to ignore subpoenas in contempt of Congress; yelling "Fire' in a crowded theater by manufacturing false "terror alerts" and keeping us in constant state of fear; covering up the murder of Pat Tillman; covering for criminal behavior in the outing of a CIA agent; trying to sell our ports to the United Arab Emirates — the very people who harbor terrorists; using a preemptive strike and war of aggression to invade a defenseless nation for reasons we cannot know; usurping our civil rights and lying to cover crimes within his own administration... John Conyers drafted a 370 page report documenting the full scope of Bush administration misconduct and "crimes," the WORST OF WHICH is possibly the election theft and replacement of all Federal judges with Bush cronies and "yes men" who do the president's bidding, resulting in a complete dismantling of our fragile democracy.

YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS! BBC REPORT TUNE IN LIVE FROM 9-10 a.m. online or live from LAS VEGAS (KLAV) and LOS ANGELES to our show BASHAM AND CORNELL PROGRESSIVE TALK

We have an astounding report on a 1933 plan by right wing businessmen - including Prescott Bush (W's granpappy) to stage a military coup against the US government; assassinate FDR; and set up a fascist government. It's an absolutely amazing report - and the best part is - it didn't come from a fringe, whack-job site, it came from the BBC this week! From an award-winning investigative series no less!

In the second half, we have Tina Richards, a Marine mother whose son is in the military - served 2 tours in Iraq - has PTSD - he's tried to commit suicide more than once since being honorably discharged - tells his mother he killed too many innocent women and children in Iraq. Please go to her amazing site: Grassroots America 4 Us

She's the lady whom Democratic Congressman David Obey yelled at in his hallway, that was captured on tape. She was also arrested outside Nancy Pelosi's office.

We broadcast live -- or go to our website and click on the link to hear the entire show in the archives.

George Bush promises to veto a popular bipartisan program that provides health insurance for low-income children. Below, please read Rev. Jim Wallis' astounding article. "Remember, this is a president who is content with spending $12 billion a month on war, yet finds spending $7-10 billion a year on making sure that kids have health insurance 'wrong' and 'a mistake.' I can’t imagine a more clear case of utterly distorted priorities..." (or more un-Christian!)

Before reading Jim Wallis' article, please read this by Doug Basham:

"We all know how the right bristles whenever a comparison is made between George W. Bush and/or his administration and either Adolph Hitler and/or fascism. Perhaps this BBC report will shine some light on why they bristle. Perhaps it hits a little close to home?"

From Wikipedia…
“On October 20, 1942, the U.S. government ordered the seizure of Nazi German banking operations in New York City. President Franklin Roosevelt’s Alien Property Custodian, Leo T. Crowley, signed Vesting Order Number 248 seizing the property of Prescott Bush under the Trading with the Enemy Act. The order, published in obscure government record books and kept out of the news, cited only the Union Banking Corporation (UBC) connections with Von Thyssen.”
This is a huge report, folks, and it doesn’t come from any fringe organization. I’ve already received one email asking me “Where do you get this stuff?” Well… this “stuff” comes from the BBC. From an award winning investigative series. I strongly recommend y’all give this “stuff” a listen.

I’ve always found it fascinating how right wing mouth pieces have no problem calling far left liberals “communists,” but so vociferously reject the truism that far right conservatives are “fascists.” (Or maybe not even so far right?)

Anyhow, this is just one more reason why I have contended for the longest time that the biggest threat to this country isn’t communism or terrorism - but rather, conservatism." - Doug Basham

HEARTS & MINDS by Jim Wallis of Sojourners

The Right Thing to Do

Imagine a popular program that has existed for 10 years with bipartisan support, providing health insurance to about 6 million low-income children. The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is up for reauthorization this year, and Congress is debating how to extend the hope of coverage to 9 million children who are currently uninsured, while protecting coverage for the 6.6 million children who depend on SCHIP to see a doctor. But SCHIP is caught in the middle of a political battle—between a bipartisan majority in Congress and the nation’s governors on one hand, and an isolated, defiant, ideological president on the other.

A Senate bill was approved by the Senate Finance Committee last week by a 17-4 vote, with six Republicans and all 11 Democrats supporting an increase of $35 billion dollars over five years. Several leading conservatives were strong supporters. The New York Times reported Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) as saying, "I am proud to support this important bill, which will provide health insurance coverage to approximately four million more children who would otherwise be uninsured." According to the Los Angeles Times, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), one of the original authors of the program, said: "It doesn't make me comfortable to advocate for such a large increase in spending. But it's important to note that [the program] has been tremendously successful. And one of the lessons we've learned is that it's going to cost more to cover additional kids." The bill is scheduled to be on the Senate floor next week.

For its part, the House is proposing legislation that would provide an increase of $50 billion, which would cover about 5 million more children. Both versions would be at least partially funded by an increase in the federal tax on tobacco products.

Last weekend at their annual summer meeting, the National Governors Association sent a letter to the president and Congress. While not specifically supporting either bill, the governors said: "While we have not taken a position on the actual overall funding amount or the sources of revenue used as offsets, we are encouraged by the Senate Finance Committee's efforts to move a bipartisan reauthorization bill that provides increased funding."

And President Bush? He says he’ll veto either version. "It's a way to encourage people to transfer from the private sector to government health-care plans. ... I think it's wrong, and I think it's a mistake." A White House spokesman added that the president’s advisers "will certainly recommend a veto" of the Senate committee's proposal because of its size and the plan to fund it with a tax increase. The administration's plan for an additional $5 billion wouldn’t even cover all the children currently insured.

Remember, this is a president who is content with spending $12 billion a month on war, yet finds spending $7-10 billion a year on making sure that kids have health insurance "wrong" and "a mistake." I can’t imagine a more clear case of utterly distorted priorities. Compassionate conservatism has been on life support for the last several years of this administration. President Bush's threatened veto of SCHIP will officially pronounce it dead.

We have been working with the PICO National Network, one of the leading groups organizing for SCHIP, to remind policymakers that children’s health coverage is a moral issue for the faith community. Father John Baumann, executive director of PICO, had this reaction to the president’s threat: "(SCHIP) is a highly successful program that has always had bipartisan support as a pragmatic way to help states reach children who are not poor enough for Medicaid but whose parents cannot obtain coverage for their children at work. SCHIP is a popular and successful program that should not be dragged down into a partisan political fight over health-care ideology."

I agree. For far too long, Americans in poverty have been trapped in a partisan debate. Now, a strongly bipartisan program that works is trapped by a president who sees only ideology. Call your members of Congress, and urge them to support the necessary expansion of SCHIP for America’s kids. It’s the right thing to do.

Take Action

Your congressional members need to hear that as a person of faith you believe that no child should go without treatment or depend on an emergency room for care because they lack health coverage. If we are judged by how we treat the least among us, we must make sure that all our children have coverage. Call your members of Congress today at (877) 367-5235, a free number set up by our friends at PICO National Network.

Tell them that people of faith are counting on them to stand up for the millions of uninsured children in the U.S. SCHIP has successfully reduced the uninsured rate for children by one-third over the past decade. Now Congress needs to pass a strong SCHIP bill by a veto-proof majority to provide hope to the millions of children in America who still go to sleep at night without health coverage.

  3. Bush refuses to fund insurance for over 9 million poor children.

That must be what you call a "compassionate conservative."

  4. It is probably no surprise to anyone that our president and his administration have, yet again, hid the truth from the American public. Similar to the dealings with the war in Iraq, this administration has been feeding lies to the public. Now the war has proven to be a failure and is causing more violence, terror and poverty in this world. According to the Borgen Project, it only takes $19 billion dollars annually to eradicate world hunger and poverty. However, our government has already spent more than $450 billion dollars over this fruitless war in Iraq. It is time for the Bush Administration to take a real interest in the lives of the American people as well as people who are in desperate needs around the world. Stop the lies and stop poverty now.

  6. If it is good enough for Bush, why not poor children:

Democratic lawmakers in Washington say they're drafting a health care reform bill that would expand coverage for low-income kids. President Bush says he'll veto any such legislation, warning that it would lead the nation "down the path to government-run health care for every American."

Like that would be a bad thing.

What's particularly galling about Bush's position is that it's coming from a man who just underwent a colonoscopy performed at the taxpayer-funded, state-of-the-art medical facility at Camp David by an elite team of doctors from the taxpayer-funded National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

If anyone understands the benefits of government-run health care, it's the president.

But let's not get sidetracked. Bush wasn't being entirely accurate when he derided the notion of government-run health care for every American. That might make for a fine little sound bite, especially among those who fear the specter of "socialized medicine," but it's not really what's at stake.

Rather, advocates of health care reform are seeking government-run insurance for every American, leaving the health care part to those who know best - doctors and nurses.

This is a crucial distinction at a time when 47 million Americans lack medical coverage and, according to researchers at Harvard University, about a third of the $2 trillion spent annually on health care in this country is squandered on bureaucratic overhead.

Taxpayers paid for Bush's worthless body to be scraped on, why can't taxpayers pay for healthcare for poor kids.

  7. Thanks Suzie,

I'm not officially back until mid-August. But I'll check in when things get urgent, like this post about Bush.

I really think impeachment is the only answer. And it has to start with Bush, since he can't pardon himself.

Anyway, can't wait to catch up with you in detail

The Fascist Reich Wing wants to bring back the guilded Age and destroy all the safety nets and oversite that FDR built into the system.

He refuses to allow poor children healthcare, that they need more than him.

  10. Get a load of this:

The Washington Post has a fascinating story up about Bush's increasing isolation and his meetings with historians and theologians to determine answers to questions about his presidency, like, "Why does everyone hate me?"

Still, that trip (to New York with King and Rangel to visit a Harlem school) demonstrated that Bush cannot escape his burdens. King, the GOP congressman, introduced him backstage to a soldier injured in one eye. Bush teared up and asked the young man to take off his dark glasses so he could see the wound, King recalled. "Human instinct is when someone has a serious injury to look the other way," King said. "He actually asked him to take them off. He actually touched the eye a little. It was almost as if he felt he had to confront it."

It's not human instinct that looks the other way. It's tact. Sorry, but no matter how King tries to spin it, that's creepy. When Bush's need to confront the reality of how badly you've screwed up this war and destroyed lives runs up against a soldier's need not to have his wound fingered by the bastard that sent him to Iraq in the first place, guess what? The soldier's needs should come first. This isn't Angela Merkel. This is a wounded soldier, and Bush needs to keep his hands to himself.

    Cold and pathetic!

  11. The 14 Defining
    Characteristics Of Fascism
    Free Inquiry
    Spring 2003
    5-11-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

    4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

    5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

    6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

    7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed
to the government's policies or actions.

    9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

    10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

    14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

  12. They Thought They Were Free

    By Milton Mayer
    http://www.thirdreich.net/Thought_They_Were_Free_nn4.html

"They Thought They Were Free: The Germans 1933-1945",
University of Chicago Press. Reissued in paperback, April, 1981.

As Harpers Magazine noted when the book was published in 1955 (U. of Chicago), Milton Mayerâsextraordinarily far-sighted book on the Germans is more timely today than ever·Ã¤

This crucial book tells how and why 'decent men' became Nazis through short biographies of 10 law-abiding citizens. An American journalist of German/Jewish descent, Mr. Mayer provides a fascinating window into the lives, thoughts and emotions of a people caught up in the rush of the Nazi movement. It is a book that should make people pause and think -- not only about the Germans, but also about themselves.

But Then It Was Too Late

"What no one seemed to notice," said a colleague of mine, a philologist, "was the ever widening gap, after1933, between the government and the people. Just think how very wide this gap was to begin with, here in Germany. And it became always wider. You know it doesn't make people close to their government to be told that this is a people's government, a true democracy, or to be enrolled in civilian defense, or even to vote. All this has little, really nothing to do with knowing one is governing.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security. And their sense of identification with Hitler, their trust in him, made it easier to widen this gap and reassured those who would otherwise have worried about it.

"This separation of government from people, this widening of the gap, took place so gradually and so insensibly, each step disguised (perhaps not even intentionally) as a temporary emergency measure or associated with true patriotic allegiance or with real social purposes. And all the crises and reforms (real reforms, too) so occupied the people that they did not see the slow motion underneath, of the whole process of government growing remoter and remoter.

"You will understand me when I say that my Middle High German was my life. It was all I cared about. I was a scholar, a specialist. Then, suddenly, I was plunged into all the new activity, as the universe was drawn into the new situation; meetings, conferences, interviews, ceremonies, and, above all, papers to be filled out, reports, bibliographies, lists, questionnaires. And on top of that were the demands in the community, the things in which one had to, was "expected to" participate that had not been there or had not been important before. It was all rigmarole, of course, but it consumed all one's energies, coming on top of the work one really wanted to do. You can see how easy it was, then, not to think about fundamental things. One had no time."

"Those," I said, "are the words of my friend the baker. "One had no time to think. There was so much going on." "Your friend the baker was right," said my colleague. "The dictatorship, and the whole process of its coming into being, was above all diverting. It provided an excuse not to think for people who did not want to think anyway. I do not speak of your "little men", your baker and so on; I speak of my colleagues and myself, learned men, mind you. Most of us did not want to think about fundamental things and never had. There was no need to. Nazism gave us some dreadful, fundamental things to think about - we were decent people - and kept us so busy with continuous changes and "crises" and so fascinated, yes, fascinated, by the machinations of the "national enemies", without and within, that we had no time to think about these dreadful things that were growing, little by little, all around us. Unconsciously, I suppose, we were grateful. Who wants to think?

"To live in this process is absolutely not to be able to notice it - please try to believe me - unless one has a much greater degree of political awareness, acuity, than most of us had ever had occasion to develop. Each step was so small, so inconsequential, so well explained or, on occasion, "regretted," that, unless one were detached from the whole process from the beginning, unless one understood what the whole thing was in principle, what all these "little measures" that no "patriotic German" could resent must some day lead to, one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing. One day it is over his head.

"How is this to be avoided, among ordinary men, even highly educated ordinary men? Frankly, I do not know. I do not see, even now. Many, many times since it all happened I have pondered that pair of great maxims, Principiis obsta and Finem respice - "Resist the beginnings" and "consider the end." But one must foresee the end in order to resist, or even see, the beginnings. One must foresee the end clearly and certainly and how is this to be done, by ordinary men or even by extraordinary men? Things might have changed here before they went as far as they did; they didn't, but they might have. And everyone counts on that might.

"Your "little men," your Nazi friends, were not against National Socialism in principle. Men like me, who were, are the greater offenders, not because we knew better (that would be too much to say) but because we sensed better. Pastor Niemoller spoke for the thousands and thousands of men like me when he spoke (too modestly of himself) and said that, when the Nazis attacked the Communists, he was a little uneasy, but, after all, he was not a Communist, and so he did nothing: and then they attacked the Socialists, and he was a little uneasier, but, still, he was not a Socialist, and he did nothing; and then the schools, the press, the Jews, and so on, and he was always uneasier, but still he did nothing. And then they attacked the Church, and he was a Churchman, and he did something - but then it was too late."

    "Yes," I said.

"You see," my colleague went on, "one doesn't see exactly where or how to move. Believe me, this is true. Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for the one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You don't want to act, or even to talk, alone; you don't want to "go out of your way to make trouble." Why not? - Well, you are not in the habit of doing it. And it is not just fear, fear of standing alone, that restrains you; it is also genuine uncertainty.

"Uncertainty is a very important factor, and, instead of decreasing as time goes on, it grows. Outside, in the streets, in the general community, "everyone is happy. One hears no protest, and certainly sees none. You know, in France or Italy there will be slogans against the government painted on walls and fences; in Germany, outside the great cities, perhaps, there is not even this. In the university community, in your own community, you speak privately to you colleagues, some of whom certainly feel as you do; but what do they say? They say, "It's not so bad" or "You're seeing things" or "You're an alarmist."

"And you are an alarmist. You are saying that this must lead to this, and you can't prove it. These are the beginnings, yes; but how do you know for sure when you don't know the end, and how do you know, or even surmise, the end? On the one hand, your enemies, the law, the regime, the Party, intimidate you. On the other, your colleagues pooh-pooh you as pessimistic or even neurotic. You are left with your close friends, who are, naturally, people who have always thought as you have.

"But your friends are fewer now. Some have drifted off somewhere or submerged themselves in their work. You no longer see as many as you did at meetings or gatherings. Informal groups become smaller; attendance drops off in little organizations, and the organizations themselves wither. Now, in small gatherings of your oldest friends, you feel that you are talking to yourselves, that you are isolated from the reality of things. This weakens your confidence still further and serves as a further deterrent to ö to what? It is clearer all the time that, if you are going to do anything, you must make an occasion to do it, and then you are obviously a troublemaker. So you wait, and you wait.

"But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That's the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and the smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked ö if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in "43" had come immediately after the "German Firm" stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in "33". But of course this isn't the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.

"And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying "Jew swine," collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in ö your nation, your people ö is not the world you were in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves; when everyone is transformed, no one is transformed. Now you live in a system which rules without responsibility even to God. The system itself could not have intended this in the beginning, but in order to sustain itself it was compelled to go all the way.

"You have gone almost all the way yourself. Life is a continuing process, a flow, not a succession of acts and events at all. It has flowed to a new level, carrying you with it, without any effort on your part. On this new level you live, you have been living more comfortably every day, with new morals, new principles. You have accepted things you would not have accepted five years ago, a year ago, things that your father, even in Germany, could not have imagined.

"Suddenly it all comes down, all at once. You see what you are, what you have done, or, more accurately, what you haven't done ( for that was all that was required of most of us: that we do nothing). You remember those early meetings of your department in the university when, if one had stood, others would have stood, perhaps, but no one stood. A small matter, a matter of hiring this man or that, and you hired this one rather than that. You remember everything now, and your heart breaks. Too late. You are compromised beyond repair.

"What then? You must then shoot yourself. A few did. Or "adjust" your principles. Many tried, and some, I suppose, succeeded; not I, however. Or learn to live the rest of your life with your shame. This last is the nearest there is, under the circumstances, to heroism: shame. Many Germans became this poor kind of hero, many more, I think, than the world knows or cares to know."

I said nothing. I thought of nothing to say.

"I can tell you," my colleague went on, "of a man in Leipzig, a judge. He was not a Nazi, except nominally, but he certainly wasn't an anti Nazi. He was just ö a judge. In "42" or "43", early "43", I think it was, a Jew was tried before him in a case involving, but only incidentally, relations with an "Aryan" woman. This was "race injury", something the Party was especially anxious to punish. In the case a bar, however, the judge had the power to convict the man of a "nonracial" offense and send him to an ordinary prison for a very long term, thus saving him from Party "processing" which would have meant concentration camp or, more probably, deportation and death. But the man was innocent of the "nonracial" charge, in the judge's opinion, and so, as an honorable judge, he acquitted him. Of course, the Party seized the Jew as soon as he left the courtroom.
    "
    "And the judge?"

"Yes, the judge. He could not get the case off his conscience ö a case, mind you, in which he had acquitted an innocent man. He thought that he should have convicted him and saved him from the Party, but how could he have convicted an innocent man? The thing preyed on him more and more, and he had to talk about it, first to his family, then to his friends, and then to acquaintances. (That's how I heard about it.) After the "44" Putsch they arrested him. After that, I don't know."

    I said nothing.

"Once the war began," my colleague continued, "resistance, protest, criticism, complaint, all carried with them a multiplied likelihood of the greatest punishment. Mere lack of enthusiasm, or failure to show it in public, was "defeatism." You assumed that there were lists of those who would be "dealt with" later, after the victory. Goebbels was very clever here, too. He continually promised a "victory orgy" to "take care of" those who thought that their "treasonable attitude" had escaped notice. And he meant it; that was not just propaganda. And that was enough to put an end to all uncertainty.

"Once the war began, the government could do anything "necessary" to win it; so it was with the "final solution" of the Jewish problem, which the Nazis always talked about but never dared undertake, not even the Nazis, until war and its "necessities" gave them the knowledge that they could get away with it. The people abroad who thought that war against Hitler would help the Jews were wrong. And the people in Germany who, once the war had begun, still thought of complaining, protesting, resisting, were betting on Germany's losing the war. It was a long bet. Not many made it."

Oil rose above $75 on Friday as investors focused on tightening fuel supplies and shrugged off immediate worries over corporate borrowing costs and the U.S. economy that roiled stock markets.

Sharp falls in global stock markets, triggered by weak U.S. housing data and tightening credit markets, had dragged crude more than $1 lower late on Thursday. But oil recovered its poise on Friday, remaining within sight of its record high above $78.

This is enough to impeach Bush for.

  16. lydia, i, too, would love to see impeachment but we are out of time. i really think that we have to start going for arrest and indictment somehow, some way. perhaps that's why leahy is going for contempt of congress and whatnot. what would really be nice- if someone in europe started war crimes proceedings against these yahoos and they wound up in the hague.

Iraq is in the throes of its worst political crisis since the fall of Saddam Hussein with the new democratic system, based on national consensus among its ethnic and sectarian groups, appearing dangerously close to collapsing, say several politicians and analysts.

  19. Another reason to impeach Bush:

On July 17, 2007, George W. Bush completed his transition of the United States of America from a democratic republic to a bona fide dictatorship by issuing Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq.

Since every soul on the planet is a “Certain Person,” this Executive Order concerns YOU. We are now one giant step closer to a police state.

    No Action Required
To suffer the wrath of der Fuhrer, no action need be taken on your part.

As His Executive Order explains, due to “the unusual and extraordinary threat” to our national security, if the Decider decides you may pose a risk to bringing stability to Iraq, your property and assets will be frozen and you will no longer be allowed to receive a paycheck or to purchase…anything.

  20. Lydia, in all seriousness, Cheney really must be impeached before Bush. Bush merely follows the directions of Cheney and Karl Rove, he's a mouthpiece. But it has to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  21. There's a reason Bush must be impeached first. On Tom Hartmann this was explained: Bush can pardon Cheney. Bush can't pardon himself.

We must set into motion the impeachment as a precedent at least to show our children that criminal behavior will not be tolerated. We have to start the process.

Cheney is responsible, and must be impeached too. But the buck stops with the president, even if he's just a figure-head.

Bush has bankrupted our nation, broken laws, destroyed the Constitution and declared the U.S. in a perpetual global war -- allowing unlimited powers for himself.

Even Republican Bruce Fein, who wrote up Clinton's impeachment says these are impeachable crimes.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Bush and Cheney need to be impeached Simultaneously, due to the fact that Bush's pardoning power needs to be neutalized so he cant obstruct justice and stifle investigations and Cheney needs to be impeached so he cant pull a stunt like starting a war or using a self created act of terrorism to declare martial law.

We Need to take out the trash and get rid of BOTH treasonous war criminals at the same time, just like Nixon and Agnew were removed only this time it NEEDS to be done simultaneously because we DONT want the scheming Dick The Dunce Cheney assuming the reigns of power.

  23. Also Consider this, i'm sure a big part of Pelosi and Reed being so firm against impeachment is the desire to not jeprodize 2008, but i'm also wondering if Pelosi has had her life threatened or is being blackmailed by the Reich Wing.......we KNOW Sandra Day O'connor had her life threatened and that played a big factor in her resigning and we KNOW Bush and Rove are spying on Americans obviously to dig up dirt on their political opponents to blackmail them........could they have dirt on Pelosi?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Consider that most of the problems we have today were caused by Reich Wing idiots like Allen Dulles and Hoover.

Dulles started the Vietnam War by destabilizing that Country, He unleashed Fundamentalist Islam on the world by destabilizing Iran and installing the Shaw against the will of the people who elected another and by supporting the Fundamentalists against the USSR.

Dulles and Hoover also had Kennedy killed because he chose peace over war and the Military Industrial Complex and was going to disband and scatter the rogue CIA to the wind.

The CIA and FBI likely were part of a conspiracy to murder and/or cover up the murder of JFK to maintain power, keep the war going and maintain the hegemony of the Military Industrial Complex.

A participant reports: "The honking never ceased - it was one steady stream of noise - the people want it! An idea for others who plan rush hour impeach 'honk fests,' I had on hand pre-printed impeach postcards for people to sign and send to their reps. Most drivers were very eager to take them." Shell has produced a stunning financial performance over the second quarter of the year with profits soaring by 20% to $7.6bn (£3.7bn) on the back of very high refining margins and despite a fall in production.

The record results – amounting to some £1.5m an hour – underlined Shell's current supremacy over arch-rival BP which barely lifted its profits when measured on the same basis.

They also outpaced US oil giant Exxon Mobil, which caught Wall St on the hop this afternoon with a fall in its quarterly profits instead of the expected rise. At $10.3bn, Exxon's profits remain comfortably ahead of Shell's, however.

Millions of Americans are losing their jobs, the economy is going down the sewer, thousands are losing their lives in Iraq, and Bush's oil buddies make nearly $3 million an hour.

  54. I posted a post in TP about how I think Tillman was killed due to being "fragged" for his outspoken views on Bush and Iraq.

    But ThinkProgress DELETED IT!

Screw TP. Here's what we know.

The Military reported he was fired on from a Humvee from 150 yards out. We know that is false. The cororners reported he was shot from just 10 yards.

    Not 150 yards.

    Just 10 yards.

He had 3, tightly cropped bulletholes in his forehead. Execution style.

We know Tilman was an outspoken opponent of Bush and the war in Iraq. We know he was unpopular with the "right wing" soldiers and officers in his platoon.

We know there were purported death threats.Once he got out of the service, he probably would have been a very vocal opponent of the right wing, and a hard one to beat.

Here was this big, strong, good looking all American super football hero who gave up his career to protect America from the terrorists. Everyone loved him.

And then, he's suddenly killed. Shot in the head 3 times.

    By his own men.

They report he was killed returning from patrol from 150 yards out.

The doctors report he was killed from only 10 yards away.

The Pentagon covered up the doctors report, but they came out anyway. Now, the Bush administration wants us to "fagitabbouddit".

    Whats to be suspicous about?

    ReplyDelete
  61. BTW, doesnt friendly fire usually indicate being shot in the back, bot execution style betwen the eyes?

    ReplyDelete

  63. Well said on all fronts. I just don't understand how Clinton got impeached and Bush keeps getting away with everything he does.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yea I think it was ordered too. Covertly of course. No official document chain or anything.

Just a nod and wink behind closed doors as it worked its way down the chain to the right wing thugs in his platoon who were too afraid to face him and voice their hate speech, or challenge him in open debate, so they threatened him anonymously and then killed him when the word was quietly given.

If Tillman had been permitted to come home, a war hero and one of the most popular figures in the war on Terror, and spoke out against Bush and his war in Iraq, that would have been very, very damaging.

    So they killed him.

    Thats what I think.

And why did the police walk Oswald out there to be shot?

Regardless of who was in the Grassy Knoll, if anyone, or how many shooters there were, one things for sure.

But thats not even the issue! The issue is why he was killed.

And the key to that, is JACK RUBY.

Once you realize, that no matter what you believe about single shooters, multipe shooters, etc, you just CANNOT get past the fact that Jack Ruby, is a down home cornfed inbred shit kicking good ole boy conservative.

So why did he, of all people, just suddenly, overcome with grief over the loss of this colored people loving left wing liberal president, walk out in open daylight and shoot Lee Harvey Oswald to death?

You'll see you just CANNOT move past that fact. Regardless of all the "theories", that fact stands firm. Jack Ruby, was one of the last people on earth who would have cared enough about JFK to go insane and shoot his killer to avenge his death. Ruby would have never done it, unless there was benefit for the conervatives by doing it. And in this case, there was. To silence Oswald, before he could talk.

  77. Bush Executive Order: Criminalizing the Antiwar Movement
    Sudhan@21:35 CET

    By Prof. Michel Chossudovsky

    Global Research, July 20, 2007

The Executive Order entitled “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq” provides the President with the authority to confiscate the assets of whoever opposes the US led war.

A presidential Executive Order issued on July 17th, repeals with the stroke of a pen the right to dissent and to oppose the Pentagon’s military agenda in Iraq.

The Executive Order entitled “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq” provides the President with the authority to confiscate the assets of “certain persons” who oppose the US led war in Iraq:

“I have issued an Executive Order blocking property of persons determined to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq or undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.”

In substance, under this executive order, opposing the war becomes an illegal act.

The Executive Order criminalizes the antiwar movement. It is intended to “blocking property” of US citizens and organizations actively involved in the peace movement. It allows the Department of Defense to interfere in financial affairs and instruct the Treasury to “block the property” and/or confiscate/ freeze the assets of “Certain Persons” involved in antiwar activities. It targets those “Certain Persons” in America, including civil society organizatioins, who oppose the Bush Administration’s “peace and stability” program in Iraq, characterized, in plain English, by an illegal occupation and the continued killing of innocent civilians.

The Executive Order also targets those “Certain Persons” who are “undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction”, or who, again in plain English, are opposed to the confiscation and privatization of Iraq’s oil resources, on behalf of the Anglo-American oil giants.

The order is also intended for anybody who opposes Bush’s program of “political reform in Iraq”, in other words, who questions the legitimacy of an Iraqi “government” installed by the occupation forces.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Fortunately right after his death penalty conviction was overturned and before another trial could look closer at the assasination of the President, Jack Ruby was informed by his doctor that he had brain cancer in his lung, liver and brain, and died.

Ending any further questioning of the right wing neocon from Chicago, shot the man who killed a president that he himself, desipised.

To this day, not one person can provide a viable reason why Jack Ruby killed Oswald, other than trying to keep Oswald from telling us something.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Bush is once again issuing edicts to seize the assets of those who dissent with him or oppose him........what edict will come next the imprisonment or murder of dissenters?

I'm wondering if this Executive Order is fueling the Stock Market sell off...........I know if I were a powerful and wealthy person opposed to the war I would pull my assets out of this country and move them overseas.........hell I may do that anyway.

If you dont see where this is leading this is a fool.........Bush can imprison, torture or confiscate the assets of American citizens on a whim with no proof or oversite whatsoever and no one to account to............we have a dictator in the image of Hitler in power.

Bush Directive for a "Catastrophic Emergency" in America: Building a Justification for Waging War on Iran?

"Another [9/11 type terrorist] attack could create both a justification and an opportunity that is lacking today to retaliate against some known targets" (Statement by Pentagon official, leaked to the Washington Post, 23 April 2006)

The US media consensus is that "the United States faces its greatest threat of a terrorist assault since the September 11 attacks" (USA Today, 12 February 2006) The American Homeland is threatened by " Islamic terrorists", allegedly supported by Tehran and Damascus.

America is under attack" by an illusive "outside enemy".

Concepts are turned upside down. War becomes Peace. "Offense" becomes a legitimate means of "self-defense". In the words of President Bush:

"Against this kind of enemy, there is only one effective response: We must go on the offense, stay on the offense, and take the fight to them." (President George W. Bush, CENTCOM Coalition Conference, May 1, 2007)

The intent is to seek a pretext to wage a preemptive war.

The Role of the US Military in the Case of a "Catastrophic Emergency"

NSPD 51 would instate martial law under the authority of the White House and the DHS. It would suspend constitutional government under the provisions of Continuity in Government (COG).

The provisions of NSPD 51 are consistent with an existing body of legislation and regulations pertaining to alleged terrorist attacks on the Homeland and the declaration of martial law.

Code Red Alert was initially established under the provisions of Homeland Security Presidential Directive-3 (March 2002). Under the existing legislation, a code red alert would trigger conditions for the "temporary" suspension of the normal functions of civilian government. Several functions of civilian administration would be closed down, others could be transferred to the jurisdiction of the military. More generally, the procedure would disrupt government offices, businesses, schools, public services, transportation, etc.

According to (former) Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge (22 Dec. 2003):

"If we go to [code] Red ... it basically shuts down the country."

In which case, a national emergency is declared, Northern Command deploys its forces on air, land and sea. Several functions of civilian government are transferred to NORTHCOM headquarters, which already has the structures which enable it to oversee and supervise civilian institutions.

Code red alert would suspend civil liberties, including public gathering and/ or citizens' protests against the Administration's decision to declare martial law.

The emergency authorities would also have the authority to exert tight censorship over the media and would no doubt paralyze the alternative news media on the internet.

In turn, code red alert would trigger the "civilian" Homeland Emergency response system, including the DHS' Ready.Gov instructions, the Big Brother Citizen Corps, not to mention the USAonWatch and Neighborhood Watch Program which have a mandate to "identify and report suspicious activity in neighborhoods" across America.

his distinction is important, in view of mounting opposition within the Armed Forces to the possible use of a "false flag" terrorist attack as a justification for the launching of a broader Middle East war, in which nuclear weapons could be used against Iran.

NSPD 51 largely confirms the "legitimacy" of preexisting procedures and legislation, while also stipulating a central and critical role for the presidency in the case of a "Catastrophic Emergency". In fact, NSPD 51 thwarts the possibility of discretionary actions taken unilaterally by the Military in the case of a national emergency. Broadly speaking, NSPD 51 reinforces the control exerted by the White House, its civilian apparatus as well as its corporate lobby groups.

While COG would result in the militarization of civilian institutions, this process would be under the control of civilian policy-makers, acting on behalf of their corporate sponsors. This civilian policy apparatus, made up of senior NeoCon advisers, with links to the Washington think tanks, Wall Street and the oil giants, is slated to play a key role in the case of martial law.

Whereas the militarization of justice and law enforcement would proceed, the Military would, nonetheless, remain subordinate to a "civilian dictatorship".

On June 2nd, the US was "dominated by screaming headlines and sensationalist broadcast coverage of an alleged plot in New York to blow up John F. Kennedy International Airport" (See Bill van Auken, June 7, 2007). In the meantime, the US public has become increasingly skeptical of repeated fake terror alerts:

There is every reason to believe that the succession of “terror” cases, each one weaker than the last and virtually all of them driven by “informants” who seem to play more the role of agents provocateur, are aimed at achieving precisely this effect. They serve as a means of intimidating public opinion with fear, justifying attacks on democratic rights and diverting attention from the ongoing debacle in Iraq.

The problem faced by the government is that the public is growing increasingly skeptical about these cases, with a sizeable portion of the population having concluded that they are trumped up for political purposes. (Ibid)

New Military Appointments; The Firing of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Several key military appointments were made in recent months. Of significance, Admiral. William J. Fallon, was appointed Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in March by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.

Meanwhile, another major military appointment was implemented, which has a direct bearing on war preparations in relation to Iran. Admiral Timothy J. Keating Commander of US NORTHCOM was appointed on March 26, to head US Pacific Command, which includes both the 5th and the 7th fleets. The 7th Fleet Pacific Command is the largest U.S. combatant command. Keating, who takes over from Admiral Fallon is also an unbending supporter of the "war on terrorism". Pacific Command would be playing a key role in the context of a military operation directed against Iran.(http://www.pacom.mil/about/pacom.shtml)

Of significance, Admiral Keating was also involved in the 2003 attack on Iraq as commander of US Naval Forces Central Command and the Fifth Fleet.

Admiral Fallon is fully compliant with the Bush administration's war plans in relation to Iran. He replaces Gen. John P. Abizaid, who was pushed into retirement, following apparent disagreements with Rumsfeld's successor, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates. While Abizaid recognized both the failures and the weaknesses of the US military in Iraq, Admiral Fallon is closely aligned with Vice President Dick Cheney. He is also firmly committed to the "Global War on Terrorism" (GWOT). CENTCOM would coordinate an attack on Iran from the Middle East war theater.

Moreover, the appointment of an Admiral is indicative of a shift in emphasis of CENTCOM's functions in the war theater. The "near term" emphasis is Iran rather than Iraq, requiring the coordination of naval and air force operations in the Persian Gulf.

The instatement of NSPD 51 in May 2007 was followed barely a few weeks later by the announcement of the "non-renewal of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) General Peter Pace, who in recent months, has indicated his disagreement with the Administration regarding Iran.

General Pace stated (February 2007) that he saw no firm evidence of Tehran supplying weapons to Shiite militias inside Iraq, which was being heralded by the Bush administration as a justification for waging war on Iran:

"[M]aybe that's why he's the outgoing chairman. Maybe that's why they're not renewing him. Because ...He has seen no evidence that Iran is fomenting unrest in Iraq that's causing Americans lives... " (Fox News' Alan Colmes, ox News, June, 13, 2007),

General Peter Pace ends his term as Chairman of the JCS in September 2007. Defense Secretary Gates has already announced that Admiral Michael Mullen, U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, has been nominated to replace General Peter Pace as Chairman of the Joint chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Mullen's discourse is in marked contrast to that of General Peter Pace. Mullen, who was in charge of coordinating naval war games off the Iranian coastline, has expressed an unbending commitment to "waging" and "winning asymmetric wars", while also "protecting the United States":

"we must ensure we have the Battle Force, the people, and the combat readiness we need to win our nation's wars...

Our Navy is fighting the Global War on Terror while at the same time providing a Strategic Reserve worldwide for the President and our Unified and Combatant Commanders.... Simply reacting to change is no longer an acceptable course of action if our Navy is to successfully wage asymmetric warfare and simultaneously deter regional and transnational threats (Statement, Senate Armed Services Committee, 7 May 2007)

Admiral Mullen's stance is in line with that of the Bush Administration's key Neo-conservative ideologues. With regard to Iran, echoing almost verbatim the stance of the White House, Admiral Mullen considers that it is "unacceptable that Iran is providing U.S. enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan with capabilities that are hurting and killing U.S. troops." (Inside the Pentagon, June 21, 2007). But on the issue of Iran, the Democrats are on board. There is a bipartisan consensus, expressed by Senator Jo Lieberman:

"I want to make clear I'm not talking about a massive ground invasion of Iran,... [but a] strike over the border into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our soldiers" (AP, June 11, 2007)

US Nuclear Weapons in the Middle East War Theater

The use of conventional and nuclear weapons are now part of the same integrated command structure.

The Bush administration has confirmed that it contemplates the possible use tactical bunker buster nuclear bombs to "take out" Iran's non-existent nuclear weapons' facilities. An operational plan to wage aerial attacks on Iran has been in "a state of readiness" since June 2005. Essential military hardware to wage this operation has been deployed. (For further details see Michel Chossudovsky, Nuclear War against Iran, Jan 2006 ).

Vice President Dick Cheney' "Contingency Plan" "includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons." (Philip Giraldi, Attack on Iran: Pre-emptive Nuclear War , The American Conservative, 2 August 2005). USSTRATCOM would have the responsibility for overseeing and coordinating this military deployment as well as launching the military operation. (For details, Michel Chossudovsky, Nuclear War against Iran, Jan 2006 ).

General Peter Pace is known to be opposed to the use of nuclear weapons against Iran:

"The Bush regime’s plan to attack Iran with nuclear weapons puts General Pace’s departure in a different light. How can President Bush succeed with an order to attack with nuclear weapons when America’s highest ranking military officer says that such an order is “illegal and immoral” and that everyone in the military has an “absolute responsibility” to disobey it?" (Paul Craig Roberts, Global Research, June 2007)

It would be difficult to wage war on Iran without the firm endorsement of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. According to Paul Craig Roberts, "[General] Pace had to go so that malleable toadies [Admiral Mullen] can be installed in his place [as Chairman of the JCS]"

Pace’s departure removes a known obstacle to a nuclear attack on Iran, thus advancing that possible course of action. A plan to attack Iran with nuclear weapons might also explain the otherwise inexplicable “National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive” (NSPD-51 and HSPD-20) that Bush issued on May 9. ...

The use of nuclear weapons arouses the ultimate fear. A US nuclear attack would send Russian and Chinese ICBMs into high alert. False flag operations could be staged in the US. The propagandistic US media would hype such developments to the hilt, portraying danger everywhere. Fear of the [Bush] regime’s new detention centers would silence most voices of protest as the regime declares its “national emergency.” (Ibid)

Repeated ad nauseam on a daily basis, the GWOT has also become part of a shaky bipartisan political consensus. Despite the blatant contradictions and the political lies, in particular in relation to 9/11 and the possibility of a second large scale terrorist attack, the GWOT is nonetheless accepted by an increasingly skeptical US public.

Behind this diabolical "catastrophic emergency" scenario, which ultimately hinges on the powers of media disinformation and deceit, is a profit driven war.

The spiraling multibillion dollar "defense" budget, which according to independent estimates has reached the trillion dollar mark (more than double the official figures), is barely acknowledged, nor is the privatization of war itself.

The US military industrial complex which produces the numerous "humanitarian weapons" including the mini-nukes and bunker buster bombs used to go after the terrorists, would be the direct beneficiary of a war on Iran, together with Wall Street and the Anglo-American oil giants, which vie to appropriate and privatize the region's extensive oil and gas reserves.

This war is not led by the military but by the civilian corporate interests which lie behind the Bush administration. The military takes orders from civilians acting on behalf of those dominant economic interests.

The Wall Street financial establishment, the military-industrial complex, led by Lockheed Martin, the big five weapons and aerospace defense contractors, the Texas oil giants and energy conglomerates, the construction and engineering and public utility companies not to mention the biotechnology conglomerates, are indelibly behind this militarization of America.

In turn, the Worldwide demonization of Islam is part of this profit driven war. Three quarters of the World's oil reserves lie in Muslim lands. (World Oil 2004, see also Michel Chossudovsky, The Demonization of Muslims and the Battle for Oil, Global Research, January 2007 ).

Vilification of the enemies of America, portrayed as fanatic "Islamic terrorists", is part of the Battle for Oil. If the oil were in countries occupied predominantly by Buddhists or Hindus, one would expect that Bush's entire National Security agenda, including the recent "Catastrophic Emergency" Directive NSP 51 would be directed against Buddhists and Hindus.

    How to reverse the tide?

The threat of a Second Al Qaeda "Attack on America" is being used profusely by the Bush administration to galvanize public opinion in support of a global military agenda.

Known and documented, the "Islamic terror network" is a creation of the US intelligence apparatus. The "war on terrorism" is bogus. The 911 narrative as conveyed by the 911 Commission report is fabricated.

The Bush administration is involved in acts of cover-up and complicity at the highest levels of government.

Revealing the lies behind 911 would serve to undermine the legitimacy of the "global war on terrorism" which constitutes the main justification for waging war in the Middle East.

Without 911, the war criminals in high office do not have a leg to stand on. Their entire National Security construct collapses like a deck of cards.

It is now evident that the Bush administration had full knowledge of Pat Tillman's murder coverup, or was involved in Tillman's murder.

Pat Tillman was very outspoken in support of John Kerry and he was against the invasion of Iraq.

    So he was murdered.

Anyone who has ever handled weaponry knows that this is a deliberate kill. Yes, Tillman was fragged.

The reasons may be exactly as you say they are. Or he may have been killed by someone on down the line for these reasons, and the Pentagon decided to make a hero out of him. Remember that their first hero was alive and able to put the lie to their propaganda; I am sure they thought Pat would be much easier to use that way.

No wonder they finally decided to make Terri Schiavo their Horst Wessel. Using troops always bites them in the ass.

Let's do what we can to make sure that Pat Tillman's death is remembered. ESPECIALLY his manner of death.

When they order a nuclear attack, the Generals are going to overthrow the Government. If they should order any kind of an attack on Iran, they run the risk of winding up in chains.

I can't really say a whole lot about how I come to some of the conclusions I come to. I can say you should study carefully what retired Generals have been saying, and pay special attention to the recent statements of Ricardo Sanchez. There is a very blunt warning in there, and it isn't just for us in the public.

In the second half, we have a mother whose son is in the military - served 2 tours in Iraq - has PTSD - he's tried to commit suicide more than once since being honorably discharged - tells his mother he killed too many innocent women and children in Iraq.

Now they want to send him BACK to Iraq... he doesn't want to go and neither does his mother want him to. She's the lady Dem. congressman David Obey yelled at in his hallway, that was captured on tape. She was also arrested outside Nancy Pelosi's office.

  98. I've read about that attempted coup in the early 1930s. These people tried to get a Marine general to help carry it out and he refused. He also reported the plan to Congress but nobody believed him and they never investigated it.

  101. JR, read that article I posted it states how Bush and Cheney are firing Generals opposed to war with Iran and installing Lackies loyal to them and committed to PNAC's war.

Heres a portion of that article:

  104. Ok, So Herr Cheney had an operation to have the device monitoring his heart replaced ... a week after dubbleyuk had polyps removed from his colon.

I touched on this before and I believe I shall do so again. Do they have to be concerned that their insurance company will cover these procedures seeing as how they relate to pre-existing conditions? Do they have deductibles or co-pays to deal with? Do they have to have the procedure approved first by their primary physician? Do they have to worry about their premiums going up?

The answer to all of the above is, of course, no ... as it turns out, thier insurance company (known as The American Taxpayer) covers every dime of the procedure with no red tape, no forms to fill out, no co-payments or deductable, no premiums and no collection agencies calling after 3 months wondering about the bill.

Gee, how can I get hooked up with that insurance?

I agree but I am afraid it is too late and like everything else will escape this too. I did many stories in the past that Bush is our biggest threat not terrorism and he is.
When the worry was running rampant as to a pandemic I said it is Pandemic Bush that will kill more and is our biggest concern.
We have been powerless to stop him and I only see it getting exponentially worse as he runs out of time "I hope" and speeds the damge up.
That is why I stopped writing to try and stop this mad man.

  107. I agree Bush is a bigger threat to America than terrorism, after all he has already begun the dismantling of our democratic government. He has the capabiltity to destroy our entire way of life.

Bush claims the terrorists can do that, but they can't. All terrorists can do is kill some of us. How can that destroy our way of life? Thats the dirty little lie Bush is pushing, that the terrorists can destroy our way of life, when all they can do is kill some of our people. How we REACT determines whether our way of life is destroyed.

And how did we react? Why in typical neocon fashion of course.

Knee jerk and over the top.

But our BIGGEST threat isn't Bush. Its all of them. All of those who support turning America into a paranoid police state.

9/11 didn't hurt our way of life.

It was everything we've done since then, thats killing us.

  108. I responded to this subject earlier today at LEFT OF CENTRIST. And THANK YOU Lydia for addressing it here. We can't have enough education about this power hungry family out there. What I said there is what I'd say here:

I'm glad you posted this. I've looked at a lot of this bush dynasty history over the last few years. It's unbelievable how corrupt one family can be- merging with and marrying into equally immoral families (well not nearly equal- but moldable) spawn off children and raise them in their likeness...the actual NEED for the domination of and certainly apathy towards others.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Bush by himself is just not the biggest threat. Because if he were impeached tomorrow, another one would take his place. Maybe not at the top, but theres millions of them just like him who are willing to hand over our way of life to the terrorists for their fear.

They don't know how to honor our American history, because they don't KNOW our American history.

  113. The real story here is just what exactly the “data mining” issue was.

What about data mining would be so egregious as to cause the FBI director and others to threaten to resign?

Could it be that something predicted in here a long time ago, was accurate? Could it be that the president ordered the recording of ALL US phone calls into huge data warehousing facilities where key word searches could be ran against any phone call in the country?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Remember in 2003, CNN did a special taking us inside of NSA and the “new” surveillence plans the president had authorized with his “signing statements”?

Remember how they told us that “whenever someone on the phone in the US says the words “Bomb” “President” “Airplane” and others in certain combinations, computers at NSA begins to record the converstation.”?

Remember that? (if not then maybe you’ll remember they also told you that in the movie “Enemy of the State”)

    Now, heres the question.

IF they can “START” recording whenever certain keywords are spoken, then HOW did they KNOW, that you said those words, unless they were ALREADY recording the conversation?

    ReplyDelete
  115. IF NSA can “START” recording whenever certain keywords are spoken, then HOW did they KNOW, that you said those words?

I agree that this does come back to what you said almost 2 years ago.......I thinkl what you said that ALL AMericans are being spied on and wiretapped ALL the time is valid and accurate............BUT I think it also comes back to what I said then as well.

WHY? are ALL Americans being spied on by his man that is the sinister question that NEEDS to be addressed.

I said then Perpetual Rule is what is behind this program and that is proven even mpre true today.

Bush has been using this program to spy on and get dirt on his political enemies as well as his allies so as to black mail or intimidate them when needed, he is also likely assembling lists and databases of dissenters and opposotion that will likely be imprisoned or murdered when and if he declares martial law and completes his sinister transformation of this country into a police state.

Think about this people it isnt rocket science Bush and his cronnies dont just issue Executive Orders, change laws and stick in clauses in the dark of night to Bills to give himself unckecked power on a whim..........Thats EXACTLY what Hitler did change the laws and make them openended and ambiguous to be used at a later time.

Consider the laws and edicts this madman has pushed through lately, he passed a law where he can enter American citizens homes with NO warrant and NO notification on a whim, he can imprison and torure American citizens on a whim with no evidence proof or accountability, he can deny American citizens proper representation and fair trials, he can now seize American citizens assets based on what the "DECIDER" THINKS they MIGHT do, and he can declare martial law and impose a fascist poilice state dictatorship and disband the Constitution as well as Congress.

Pay attention to the signs............if you dont think this is the power grab to achieve perpetual rule and install a dictatorship then your an IDIOT..............all the signs are there and not ONE of them is being vigorously covered by the MSM or vigorously challenged by congress............we heard about a fascist coup in the 1930's, theres one going on RIGHT NOW, and the sheep and lemmings are slumbering or saying it wouldnt be prudent to be mean to the bad ole wolf or maybe he wont hurt us much and will justy go away if we are nice to him.

Before that question can be asked, my supposition that ALL Americans are being spied on, needs to be vocalized to the public.

Just because you get it doesn't mean the rest of the country does.

No one is articulating this. No one is addressing it. Its like the elephant in the room, that no one wants to admit they see, because its too preposterous, too overwhelming.

When the press people "get it", and start vocalizing this information, then maybe we can ask your question (although I think the answer to your question is obvious, for ultimate control in the hands of the executive, of course), but in the meantime, we need to get people talking about it.

Once someone actually says on the news that we are all being spied on, then the other question will simply fall on death ears.

  123. I am betting the reason we aren't hearing from guys like Tim Russert or Brian Williams on this is because they hold clearances of some sort, and the data being classified would not be legal to diseminate.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think most people agree that impeachment is needed, the convincing isn;t the problem here. The reasons and rationale are not the problem.

Its getting it to happen, and as long as Democrats act like Republican Lite and nobody says anything or challenges(although if they try, they are blamed for Republicans winning, etc.)things just stay mostly the same.

The war goes on, despite people making arguments against it.

Energy policy remains inadequate, infrastructure ignored, subsidies in place, tax reform not happening, social security a mess...

All these are things most of us already agree need to be changed.
We are still however devoting energy to the CONVINCING part, not the DOING part.

Convincing is done, people are mostly in favor.
But....people have to take consensus and bring it to the next level.

perhaps look at WHY nothing is being done!

I argue that if we dont address government apathy and disconnect and arrogance, we can all write about impeachment and peace and change until we are blue in the faces.

If they cared about our views, it would be on the table! Trouble is, they dont. And we are asleep at the switch.

Lots of people saying the same things, nothing happening. Even after the last elections, wtf is so different?

Im tired of spinning my brain. Preaching to the choir. We dont need agreeemnt, we need people with influence to talk about action.

Thats the point MIKE! WHO'S TALKING ABOUT IT???

    NO ONE!!!

Who on the press discusses it? They allude to it. Its not common sense. Maybe to folks like you, but to most people its unthinkable.

See, no one really gets it. Its the elephant in the room, thats too overwhelming, too preposterous for anyone to get their heads around.

Imagine, recording the conversations of practically every American in the country. Its crazy! Ludicrous even. People don’t want to admit it to themselves, because the idea is so shocking. Imagine, every call you make being recorded.

So, no one talks about it. The media has only alluded to it. Subtle hints. Stories like the CNN NSA coverage in 2003. But when they talk about it, they provide numbers, like "thousands of phone calls", which has now progressed (as I predicted it would) to millions of calls

Downplaying it is not helping. We need to shout it from the rooftops, so that they stop saying "possibly millions of calls" and just admit, ALL calls.

Once they do that, once Joe Inbred in bumf$#k Idaho sitting in his doublewide hears Tim Russert or Brian Williams say on a mainstream news show, that ALL American phone calls are being, and have been recorded since just before 9-11, and store in MASSIVE DATABASES which can later be mined for certain keywords, then I think every American will be against Bush, and he will be impeached.

Once they find this out, no one will stand behind it. But acting like they already know because its "common sense" just doesn't make any sense. Of course they don't know. If they knew, everyone would be talking about it.

  142. Voter Caging & How it Works

Was there a White House plot to illegally suppress votes in 2004? Is there a similar plan for the upcoming elections? This week NOW examines documents and evidence that points to a Republican Party plan designed to keep Democrats from voting, allegedly by targeting people based on their race and ethnicity with key battleground states like Ohio and Florida of particular interest. "It was a partisan, discriminatory attempt to challenge voters of color," Eddie Hailes, a senior attorney for The Advancement Project, a civil rights group, told NOW.

Was the White House involved? David Iglesias, one of the fired U.S. Attorneys, thinks so: "It's reprehensible. It's unethical, it's unlawful. It may very well be criminal."

  145. In politics, as in medicine, a cure based on a false diagnosis is almost always worthless, often worsening the condition that is supposed to be healed. The United States, today, suffers from a plethora of public ills. Most of them can be traced to the militarism and imperialism that have led to the near-collapse of our Constitutional system of checks and balances. Unfortunately, none of the remedies proposed so far by American politicians or analysts addresses the root causes of the problem.

According to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, released on April 26, 2007, some 78% of Americans believe their country to be headed in the wrong direction. Only 22% think the Bush administration’s policies make sense, the lowest number on this question since October 1992, when George H. W. Bush was running for a second term — and lost. What people don’t agree on are the reasons for their doubts and, above all, what the remedy — or remedies — ought to be.

    Another reason to impeach Bush!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Another reason Bush should be Impeached:

Six years after 9/11 , U.S. intel officials are complaining about the emergence of a major "gap" in their ability to secretly eavesdrop on suspected terrorist plotters. In a series of increasingly anxious pleas to Congress, intel "czar" Mike McConnell has argued that the nation's spook community is "missing a significant portion of what we should be getting" from electronic eavesdropping on possible terror plots. Rep. Heather Wilson, a GOP member of the House intelligence community, told NEWSWEEK.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Martial law is coming soon!

    ReplyDelete
  149. Another reason Bush should be Impeached:

Should Americans have to give up the Bill of Rights in order to be "safe" from terrorists? Actually, it doesn't matter what Americans think. The trade has already been made--and without any input from the people. The "democracy" that America is exporting is in fact a Homeland Security State with more surveillance powers than Saddam Hussein.

Americans no longer have any privacy from government. You may not be able to find out about your daughter's abortion or your son's college grades, but neither you nor your children have any secret whatsoever from your government. Banks, airlines, libraries, credit card companies, medical doctors and health care organizations, employers, Internet providers, any and everyone must turn over your private information at government demand.

Government demand no longer means a court approved warrant. A myriad of intelligence, security, military, and police agencies can on their own volition mine your personal data and feed it into data banks. Your democratic government does not have to tell you. Your bank, library, etc., are forbidden to tell you.

The government can monitor you as you use your computer, noting the web sites that you visit and reading the emails that you send and receive. Americans have privacy rights only against intrusions by private individuals and private organizations.

  155. Another reason to Impeach Bush:

US subprime crisis shows signs of spreading

American Home Mortgage Investment (NYSE:AHM) said it is delaying paying dividends on its common stock and may delay payments on its preferred shares because banks demanded it put up more cash after the Melville, New York-based mortgage lender wrote down the value of its loan and security portfolios significantly.

The move represents one of the first indications that the crisis facing sub-prime mortgage lenders in the US is expanding to affect lenders like American Home Mortgage whose borrowers tend to have higher 'prime' ore 'near prime' credit ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Another reason to Impeach Bush:

Starting with Existing Homes, the original forecast was for sales of 5.6 to 5.8 million units in 2007. To date, through June, the NAR has reported sales of 2.929 million units.

Lending standards are being tightened again, and this will most likely impact sales in the 2nd half of 2007. Since existing home sales are reported at the close of escrow, many of the July and August sales were in process before the most recent round of tightening - so I've assumed only a minor impact on reported sales for July and August (as compared to 2005 and 2006). I've assumed a greater impact on sales for the last four months of the year.

yes and no, I think Leahy, waxman and Schumer are trying but they have no support or backing to take theses treasonous criminals down.

  158. Pelosi and Reid are the main enablers, while most of the others are mere sheep grazing in Bush's barren pasture.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Another reason to Impeach Bush:

A proposed new FBI program would skirt federal laws by paying private companies to hold millions of phone and Internet records which the bureau is barred from keeping itself, experts say.

The $5 million project would apparently pay private firms to store at least two years' worth of telephone and Internet activity by millions of Americans, few of whom would ever be considered a suspect in any terrorism, intelligence or criminal matter.

The project would involve "the development of data storage and retrieval systems...for at least two years' worth of network calling records," according to an unclassified budget document posted to the FBI's Web site. The FBI did not respond to requests for comment for this story.

The FBI is barred by law from collecting and storing such data if it has no connection to a specific investigation or intelligence matter.

This is in line with what Worf was talking about.

Study the overall history of military coups. Most of the time it's junior-level officers who drive it; they pick a senior officer to figurehead the coup from time to time. Sometimes they don't bother with that.

If you had any idea how deep the discontent is within the ranks of the brass, you'd be as afraid of a coup as you are of martial law. Coups are seldom sanitary matters.

Jesus admonished people to heed the signs of the times, not ignore them. But if we talk about it, and warn about it, then we have a chance to avoid it.

  176. Putting your head in the sand and hoping for the best doesnt always work when your dealing with monsters who are focused, intent and organized on bringing about their agenda. i'm sure thats what many did in Germany in the 1930's they NEVER thought things would go that far.......its when you dont see something coming or dont think it possible that its the most dangerous or likely to happen.

This NEEDS to start being discussed by the MSM and Congress NEEDS to start opposing Bush and not giving him free reign when and if these things start happening it will be too late to stop, evil of this magnitude needs to be challenged early before it grows to powerful to stop. Once you cross that line there is no going back.

Pelosi and Reed have been compared to Nevelle Chamberlain regarding Iraq, I think regarding Bush the comparison is more accurate they appear to be trying to appease him assuming he will just go away quietly in 2009 and this may prove a huge miscalculation.

America used to stand for freedom and liberty, instead of the Land of The Free and Home of The Brave, we have become The Land of The DECIDER and the Home of the Cowardly.

I love life and love freedom, live free or die is my motto, and I would truly rather die than live in a police state under a fascist dictator, but i lived a great life, I sure hope its a long one but I fear more for the next generation who have so much yet to experience, its your kids, my best friends kids, my couisins kids etc.....I think deserve a better life than we had or at least as good and the way things are going it is the next generation that will pay the price if we allow our country to lose our freedom and democracy to a evil pack of fools, many times its best turn the other cheek and win over the opposition with kindness but every so often you need to stand tall and oppose evil to avert far greater evil from occuring.............this is one of those times.

People NEED to start talking about ALL phone calls being monitored, an AG that lies and tries to infect the Justice Department with blindly loyal partisans and a Presidnt run Amuk issuing edicts and Executive orders designed to suspend the Constitution and turn our country in a police state ruled by an iron handed dictator.

Facing the ugliness now and talking about it and getting it out into the light and public consciousness could avert a MUCH uglier future.

The report said 15 percent of Iraqis cannot regularly afford to eat, and 70 percent are without adequate water supplies, up from 50 percent in 2003. It also said 28 percent of children are malnourished, compared with 19 percent before the 2003 invasion.

  179. The Social Security Administration faces a record — and rapidly growing — backlog of appeals by people who claim they are too disabled to work. Through June, it had just over 745,000 cases pending, and the wait for a hearing averaged 17 months, also a record.

Claimants in some parts of the country must wait up to 31 months, according to the agency. "People have died waiting for a hearing," Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue says.

The agency says the backlog doubled in six years and could reach 1 million by 2010.

FEELING PAIN: Delays can lead to personal havoc; wait times in your city

Astrue is trying to reduce the waits, but Congress has provided nearly $1 billion less than President Bush sought over the past six years. Field offices have lost more than 2,300 workers in less than two years, leaving the agency with its lowest staffing level since the early 1970s. The agency froze staffing levels for nine months last year after threatening furloughs.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 13303 says don’t work against stabilization efforts in Iraq.

Suppose the White House, contacted station owners and told them that their coverage was one sided, and too negative, and therefore was working against stabilization efforts in Iraq?

Suppose they threatened to seize their assets if they didn’t start reporting positive stories on Iraq?

Am I the only one who finds it odd that 2 weeks after Executive Order 13303 is issued, suddenly the news is calling two war advocates war critics, and tauting their bogus claims of progress in Iraq?
