Darklords, Dunces and Dictators!

Guest post by Mike

Darklords, Dunces and Dictators! Truth oftentimes mirrors or is stranger than fiction, this article will compare history to fiction to illustrate the similarities both in motives and actions between historical and fictional darklords, dunces and dictators.

An interesting commonality when examining evildoers is the theory that evil may start out with fair motives before the all consuming desire for power to exert their will and control and dominate others eats them up and becomes the sole objective. Now keep in mind when I say "fair motives" I DON'T mean benevolent or good intentions that benefit society as a whole, what I do mean is that originally the motivations were more likely self serving and megalomanical in nature such as seizing power to do what these people felt was right or beneficial to themselves rather than genocidal or nihilistic. Hitler for instance most likely didn't ORIGINALLY intend on committing genocide by throwing people in ovens and gas chambers but the quest for total power lead him to those twisted actions eventually.

Lets examine this theory first by looking at one of my all time favorite authors Tolkien. Tolkien states that the Darklord Sauron was not wholly evil in his beginning, in fact Tolkien states that at the beginning of the second age Sauron's motives, the rehabilitation and reorganization of Middle-Earth were indeed fair, however his arrogance and desire for the power to control and effect how that change and reorganization were carried out eventually consumed him and metastasized into something very different, the desire to exert his will and control and dominate other's.

I think this is a very common theme, for the rise of dictators/darklords, although we will likely never KNOW definitively I would speculate that Bush, Cheney and the Neo Con's original intentions weren't to torture, destroy the US Constitution or get bogged down in an almost 5 year and counting unwinnable quagmire in foreign lands............

I think they were energy men who KNEW peak oil was fast approaching, they also KNEW our economic and military dominance is predicated on cheap oil, and that Iraq and Iran were just about the ONLY countries with relatively untapped oil and gas reserves that could be increased significantly. In fact Iraq probably has the cheapest oil reserves in the world and Iran has enormous natural gas reserves and could probably almost double oil output with significant investment, all that was needed was the implementation of the Neo Con plan to overthrow the USA hostile governments and install puppet governments loyal to them and we not only would we have cheap oil to keep our economy humming for almost 2 decades, but American oil companies and those in league with them could reap vast fortunes developing and buying those reserves and rewriting the laws to give our oil companies favorable contracts. ........problem is it didn't go as planned and now the desire to dominate and exert our will in ANY way possible has superceded the original plan.

The original plan was to usher in another 20 year economic boom by insuring our access to cheap oil, they also wanted to continue Reagan's work to maintain our military dominance, and continue the erosion of safety nets and regulations protecting the working class, and permanently rig the system in favor of the wealthy. Essentially they wanted to undo the NEW DEAL, abolish Social Security, destroy unions and neuter regulatory agencies like the SEC, FCC, FDA, EPA, OSHA......etc.

Similarly, although we will never truly KNOW, although Hitler despised the Jews I think in the beginning, his original plan was not the nihilistic and genocidal extermination of a race, but rather to restore Germany's former economic and military power and pride and extricate it from the yoke of harsh, punitive war reparations. I think his seething hatred and racial prejudices combined with his megalomanical obsession with exerting his will and dominating and controlling others consumed him and transformed him in to the monster we read about today.

Lets move on to the movies, in Revenge of The Sith, when Padme is witnessing the rise of the Empire, Palpatine who manipulated the republic into war to seize and cement absolute power via dictatorship, triumphantly proclaims himself emperor and Padme says "so this is how democracy dies with thunderous applause" . It chillingly reminded me of how people cheered as the heinous Patriot Act was railroaded through Congress to give the "DECIDER" special "war powers" that further eroded the checks and balances and started the transformation of our country to a police state and dictatorship.

Another "interesting" Star Wars comparison is Dick Cheney stating he is President of the Senate and thus does not fall under, nor is he subject to Executive Orders and oversight.............kinda reminds you of Emperor Palpatine shrieking "I AM THE SENATE" or cackling "unlimited power" as he implements his coup to hijack the republic and seize ultimate power.

Anakin Skywalker is another perfect example of fair motives being corrupted and replaced with the all consuming and nihilistic obsession for the power to implement the desired changes. Anakins original desire was for the power to protect the ones he loved, end the war and restore order and justice to the universe...........eventually his obsession with power transformed him into the very thing he despised and opposed.

Fortunately if we follow this theme to its logical conclusion evil always turns on itself and defeats itself, its arrogance often blinds it. Sauron never imagined any one would even attempt to destroy the ring, the irony here is that it wasn't one of the good guys that actually destroyed the ring, it was evil that turned on itself that destroyed the ring and laid the mighty Sauron and his evil empire low, it was Gollem's greed and obsession that led to Sauron's demise. Same for Hitler, it was his arrogance that caused him to overextend himself in Russia, and hastened his demise. similarly Evil once again turned on itself when Darth Vader turned on the emperor and destroyed himself and his master. Arrogance and the megalomanical perception of omnipotence and obsession with unrivaled and untouchable power led all of the previous dark lords, and dictators to the same ruinous path to the void and the nothingness and irrelevance that awaits them.

Now that we covered the darklords and dictators its time to focus on the dunces...........GWB and the Neo Cons will be brought down by their own incompetence, pompous arrogance and perceived omnipotence, exactly WHAT will bring them down is the question of the century........lets see we have attorneygate, Iraqgate, Spygate, Libbygate, and most recently Commutationgate, that is clearly a plan to further obstruct justice by providing Libby an EXCUSE to not have to testify and likely implicate GWB and Cheney in the Plame civil suit while his appeal is going on etc..............too many more to list! I'd like to hear your opinions on what will bring about the demise of the Bush Administration

  2. Interesting. I also noticed the comparisons that to me seemed almost purposely put in to Revenge of the Sith, and I often wonder if there wasn't some intent there.

I suggest people watch the "Astronaut Farmer", which clearly has a very strong message to the midwestern rural communities who almost overwhelmingly supported Bush.

That message was, "Bush is NOT one of you, and he is NOT your friend."

  4. Surgeon General Sees 4-Year Term as Compromised

    By GARDINER HARRIS
    Published: July 11, 2007
    WASHINGTON, July 10

Former Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona told a Congressional panel Tuesday that top Bush administration officials repeatedly tried to weaken or suppress important public health reports because of political considerations.

The administration, Dr. Carmona said, would not allow him to speak or issue reports about stem cells, emergency contraception, sex education, or prison, mental and global health issues. Top officials delayed for years and tried to “water down” a landmark report on secondhand smoke, he said. Released last year, the report concluded that even brief exposure to cigarette smoke could cause immediate harm.

Dr. Carmona said he was ordered to mention President Bush three times on every page of his speeches. He also said he was asked to make speeches to support Republican political candidates and to attend political briefings.

And administration officials even discouraged him from attending the Special Olympics because, he said, of that charitable organization’s longtime ties to a “prominent family” that he refused to name.

“I was specifically told by a senior person, ‘Why would you want to help those people?’ ” Dr. Carmona said.

The Special Olympics is one of the nation’s premier charitable organizations to benefit disabled people, and the Kennedys have long been deeply involved in it.

When asked after the hearing if that “prominent family” was the Kennedys, Dr. Carmona responded, “You said it. I didn’t.”

Pay special attention to the demands made to the Surgeon General demanding that he mention President Bush "3 times on every page of his speeches".

  6. And before one of the trolling scumbags comes in and decides to dismiss the former Surgeon General as incompetent or something, allow me to squash that notion right now.

Not only was he a Bush appointee, but has a career beyond reproach.

Here's a little about the man who is condemning the Bush administration.

Before being nominated, he was in the Army Special Forces, earned two purple hearts in the Vietnam War and was a trauma surgeon and leader of the Pima County, Ariz., SWAT team.

  11. There goes another dishonest Dolty Boy stupid talking point;

Sun is not to blame for global warming: study

Scientists on Wednesday said that the rise in global temperatures that has been detected over the past two decades cannot be blamed on the Sun, a theory espoused by climate-change sceptics.

British and Swiss researchers looked at data for radiation from the Sun, levels of which can cool or warm our planet's atmosphere.

They factored in a cycle which solar radiation goes through peaks and troughs of activity over a period of about 11 years.

Writing in Proceedings of the Royal Society A, a journal of Britain's de-facto academy of sciences, the team said that the Sun had been less active since 1985, even though global temperatures have continued to rise.

"Over the past 20 years, all the trends in the Sun that could have had an influence on the Earth's climate have been in the opposite direction to that required to explain the observed rise in global mean temperatures," they write.

The study is co-authored by Mike Lockwood of Britain's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Claus Froehlich of the World Radiation Centre in Switzerland.

The overwhelming consensus among scientists is that human activity is to blame for the rise in global temperatures. In its latest report, issued this year, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that this warming is already affecting the climate system.

Since 1900, the mean global atmospheric temperature has risen by 0.8 C (1.44 F), and the sea level by 10-20 centimetres (four to eight inches).

Levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, have risen by around a third since the Industrial Revolution and are now at their highest in 650,000 years. Eleven of the past 12 years rank among the dozen warmest years on record.

In the past few years, glaciers and snow and ice cover have fallen back sharply in alpine regions, the edges of the Greenland icesheet and on the Antarctic peninsula have shrunk, Arctic summer sea ice has thinned and retreated and Siberian and Canadian permafrost have shown signs of thaw and fallback.

How's it feel to be totally wrong again son?

Go back to telling us all about the kids you don't have, and all the showers they take for some reason......

  22. I asked at the bottom of my article what scandal will bring down the Bush Administration and I really am curious to hear opinions on this..............originally I thought it would be attorneygate..........but now the Libby pardon and the outing itself might give it a run for its money..........so much corruption and scandals it just boggles the mind.

In all my years on this planet I have NEVER seen anything like the Bush Administraion ........And I sincerely hope I NEVER do again!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, I know this sounds like the cop out answer, but in truth I don't think it will be one scandal. I think its a cumulatice effect brought about by the myriad of scandals he has ensnared himself in.

But if I had to pick one over the others, I'd say that commuting Scooter Libby's sentence, as well as invoking executive privilege, will be the catalyst to his impeachment and removal from office.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Both of those actions have raised the specter of concealment and hence, obstruction, and conspiracy to commit obstruction.

Those I believe will be the defining "crimes" that he is convicted of.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Professor Jonathon Turley of Georgetown U is one of many to allude to this likelyhood.

Bush invoked executive privilege for Sara Taylor to keep her from testifying on the Attorney scandal. Problem is, executive privilege is only permissable for matters of national security.

The attorney scandal does not fall under those guidelines. The Bush kamp argues that "the president needs to be able to be advised without the advisors having to worry about being questioned on any of it", which is an absurd argument that will not pass the courts. That argument if upheld, puts the White House above all other branches of the government and removes any and all oversight over anything the White ever does, and that dog just won't hunt.

Therefore the question will be raised as to why Bush is misusing executive privilege where it is legally unwarranted, which in turns raises the likelyhood that Bush is using his powers to obstruct.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In the Libby matter, there is evidence to suggest that Libby was promised by Cheney and Bush early on, that he would not serve jail time if he lied for them.

That equals conspiracy to obstruct, which is actually more serious than obstruction itself.

  27. Originally back in March I felt that attorneygate would be his downfall..........lately ive also come to the conclusion that it will be the totality of his crmes and scandals that do him in..........I mean there are so MANY criminal scandals and corruption that its become virtually impossible to defend or justify them anymore...............EVERYTHING we've ever said has proven right about these idiots!

Also there is the fact that Bush "CLAIMED" to know nothing about the firings and not be involved in any way.........now if he knew nothing about them thenm his claim of Executive privilge in this matter is moot and baseless!

  30. Great post, Mike. Bush and the neo cons exhibit many of the same qualities and ideology of the Jacobins--the 18th century French revolutionaries whose intention to remake Europe in revolutionary France’s image launched the Napoleonic Wars.

Though Napoleon was no dunce, he eventually faltered because of his ruthless ambition and false sense of invincibility.

The neo-Jacobins (who had been brewing in American think tanks for years), seized control of the Bush presidency and US foreign policy, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal of domination over the Middle East and beyond. They believe they are the global cop and what they say goes. Who will show them their Waterloo?

  32. WASHINGTON - Sen. Olympia Snowe on Wednesday became the second Republican to embrace a bill ordering troops out of Iraq as
    Another Neocon Flip Flopper!

President Bush's national security adviser tried to stop defections from the White House war policy.

Snowe, R-Maine, joined Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., in co-sponsoring a bill that would require troops to start leaving in 120 days. The bill also would end combat by April 30, 2008.

More flip flopping from so many war loving neocons.

  33. Republicans hate the troops:

Just moments ago, Senate Republicans succeeded in a filibuster in which they refused to end debate on Virginia Democrat Jim Webb's S. 2012, which would have placed strict limits on National Guard and reserve deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as mandating more downtime at home before active-duty combat troops are returned to battle.

The vote was 56-41 to end debate, with 60 votes needed to move to a full, up-or-down vote on the Webb measure. Once again, the GOP has been successful at destroying another Democratic attempt at helping service members and their families caught in the buzzsaw of the Bush administration's lies and incompetence.

"We have an amendment before us that is critical for the strength of our military and the well-being of our troops. Regardless of where we stand on the war, I would hope that we stand as one in our commitment to keeping our military the strongest in the world," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) before the vote. "We should all agree that we can't sustain that strength if our men and women in uniform aren't given the protection and care they need. That's not a Democratic talking point or a Republican talking point - it's just common sense."

The Republicans sure protect the troops, aby ensuring their harm.

  34. Bush Makes Little Girl Cry:

Although his biting sarcasm in response to unfriendly questions can make members of the White House press corps grumble under their breath, President Bush got a different reaction from a 13-year-old girl who asked him about immigration during a forum in Ohio.

The Washington Times reports Jessica Hackerd was left in tears after Bush gave her a wry "yeah, thanks" in response to her query, drawing laughter from the crowd of 400 in Brecksville, Ohio Tuesday. Bush immediately began to backpedal when he saw the reaction from Hackerd, who told the Times she was crying because she is very shy and was nervous questioning the president.

Bush can't win wars that he starts, but he can use his snarly arrogance to make little girls cry.

    Thats the "Signing Statements".

Using these signing statements Bush has single handedly nullified over 1100 of our laws, mostly as they pertain to him.

    ELEVEN HUNDRED.

These signing statements, and more importantly, the way they are being used, is going to also be part of his downfall.

Signing statements have been around since James Monroe, but only Bush has used them to contradict so many of our laws, and only Bush uses them as actual law, which is not within the power of the White House (only congress makes laws).

I think some of these signing statements will also be part of the barrage of charges headed his way.

  54. Tomcat said "Also, since the original intent of the neocons was to dismantle the safety nets for the most needy, were they not evil from the beginning?"

I think I addressed that in the article Tomcat, I defined "fair" as merely masquerading as fair but being greedy and selfserving but NOT nihilistic, murderous and genocidal. There are MANY types of evil the ones that are merely greedy, opportunistic and self serving can PRETEND to be "fair" by using their dishonest talking points like.........tax cuts for the rich help the economy and everyone, we need less regulation, less unions, social security needs to be privatized, the market should police itself and decide if its competitive when there is no free market because conservatives dominate the media or are asleep at the wheel at the SEC, FCC, EPA, etc...............

Now on the other hand those nihilistic and genocidal actions CANT pretend to be "fair" that mask is stripped away........I think GWB and the Neo Cons original intent was one of greed but has turned into something altogether different.

I think what was originally a quest for money power and influence to benefit their own self serving interests first and formost and the country to a much lesser degree has been tranformed into a nihilisic obsession for total power where in they would sacrifice stability by instigating wars, attacking Iran and even declaring martial law and exterminating those who oppose him..............I would not put ANYTHING past Bush and Cheney even exterminating and murdering those Americans that oppose his quest for power if he KNEW he could get away with it.

  56. Looks like Michael Ware has Joe Lieberman pegged real well;

SEN. JOSEPH LIEBERMAN (D), CONNECTICUT: The war is not lost in Iraq. In fact, now American Iraqi security forces are winning. The enemy is on the run in Iraq. But, here in — in Congress, in Washington, we seem to be, or some — some members seem to be on the run, chased, I fear, by public opinion polls.

COOPER: Is the enemy on the run in Iraq, Michael?

WARE: No, certainly not. And I think we need to be aware that it’s enemies. I mean, America doesn’t face just one opponent in this country, but a whole multitude, many of whom are becoming stronger, the longer the U.S. occupation here, or presence here, in Iraq continues. So, unfortunately, I’m afraid that Senator Lieberman has taken an excursion into fantasy.

Joe Lieberman is disconnected with reality about Iraq?

China's trade surplus hit a monthly high as foreign consumers snapped up electrical appliances, clothing, low-cost furniture and other products the world has come to depend on China to supply, according to government figures released Tuesday.

Since the President announced his plan to escalate the war in Iraq:

590 U.S. soldiers have died and 3,575 have been wounded in Iraq since January 10, 2007. [icasualties.org; 1/10/07-7/9/07]

No progress has been made on the political benchmarks the Iraqi government was supposed to have met already. Oil sharing legislation, the reversal of deBaathification, new election laws, scheduling of provincial elections, amending the constitution and efforts to disband the militias are all languishing either in parliament or in negotiations among the three parties. [1] A freidman Unit is in honor of Tom Freidman who when ever somebody told him the situation in Iraq was getting WORSE asked for just six more months, thus the designation of the unit he always asks for, we have completed a Freidman Unit since bush announced the "surge" of troops back to the levels around the invasion, so in a sense we are just where we were in April 2004, but with very little to actually show for it.

But trust me Bush, Cheney, Lieberman, the gutless chicken hawk reichwing will ask for freidman unit after freidman unit till the cows come home, no matter how bad Iraq gets, especially since NONE of them have their asses on the line.

Today Bush has ORDERED Harriet Meirs to not testify before congress on the US Attorney firings, citing "executive privilege".

    But he cannot do that.

Executive privilege is ONLY for matters of National Security or Treaties and relations with foreign nations.

It CANNOT be used to avoid subpoenas over domestic matters.

    Thats a FACT.

  80. WASHINGTON - The Defense Department put U.S. troops in Iraq at risk by awarding contracts for badly needed armored vehicles to companies that failed to deliver them on time, according to a review by the Pentagon's inspector general.

The June 27 report, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, examined 15 contracts worth $2.2 billion awarded since 2000 to Force Protection Inc. and Armor Holdings Inc.

The contracts were issued without the normal competition for government work because the military determined these companies were the only ones capable of supplying the vehicles fast enough to meet the demands of deployed troops.

This is no surprise: just more of the same.

The military calls it "need-to-know" information that would pose a direct threat to U.S. troops if it were to fall into the hands of terrorists. It's material so sensitive that officials refused to release the documents when asked.

As far as your question at the bottom of your entry...NOTHING will take this cabal down (imo)- unless they decide to exit peacefully in January 2009. I say if they decide because it is now completely obvious that what many of us have warned about for years has come to pass - they not only consider themselves above the law, they ARE above the law AND OUR LEGISLATIVE AND JUDICIAL BRANCHES HAVE ALLOWED IT!

I can't go into the (necessary) exhaustive detail to support what I say here because it would overwhelm this page, but I can direct you, at the risk of being accused of blog-whoring (like I care), to two of my previous entries HERE and especially HERE.

Those should convince anyone with intelligence above the bush/cheney supporter that "little" things like the attorney general illegalities, the Libby pardon, the "executive privilege" and signing statement nonsense (and many of the other latest usurpations of the bush regime) are nothing when one steps back and looks at the big picture. Hmmm. A very knowledgeable emailer says it's a felony ...

Invoking a privilege is one thing, but telling a person not to show up in response to a subpoena -- if only to actually invoke the privilege -- is quite another. It's not just worse, it's a felony under federal criminal law. See for yourself.

18 U.S.C. Sec. 1505 : ... Whoever corruptly ... influences, obstructs, or impedes ... the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress ... [s]hall be fined under this title, [or] imprisoned not more than 5 years ... or both.

18 U.S.C. Sec. 1515(b): As used in section 1505, the term "corruptly" means acting with an improper purpose, personally or by influencing another, including ... withholding, [or] concealing ... information.

I can't vouch for the legal interpretation. But it seems like decent prima facie case and the emailer knows his stuff.

  89. Those Republicans are turning on each other:

Nervous Senate Republicans beseeched the White House without apparent success Wednesday for a quick change in course on Iraq as congressional Democrats insisted on high-profile votes calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by spring.

Prospects for a less-sweeping, bipartisan challenge to President Bush suffered a setback when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the leading proposal has "less teeth than a toothless tiger."

Taken together, the events pointed toward a 10-day period of politically charged maneuvering in the Senate in which Democrats push for a withdrawal, the White House's allies resist and a small but growing collection of Republicans _ most of them facing re-election in 2008 _ is caught in the middle.

There was no evidence of that _ and the House GOP leader, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, was biting in his criticism of Republicans who have parted company with Bush on the war. "Wimps," he called them in closed-door comments confirmed by an aide.

Al-Qaida has rebuilt strength, U.S. says

AP NewsBreak: Intelligence Report Finds al-Qaida Has Largely Regained Strength

U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded al-Qaida has rebuilt its operating capability to a level not seen since just before the 2001 terrorist attacks, The Associated Press has learned.

The conclusion suggests that the group that launched the most devastating terror attack on the United States has been able to rebuild despite nearly six years of bombings, war and other tactics aimed at crippling it.

Still, numerous government officials say they know of no specific, credible threat of a new attack.

A counterterrorism official familiar with a five-page summary of the new government threat assessment called it a stark appraisal that will be discussed at the White House on Thursday as part of a broader meeting on an upcoming National Intelligence Estimate.

The official and others spoke on condition of anonymity because the secret report remains classified.

Basically they are corrupt morons who used all their political capital stealing from the American People and lying the country into a war which has left us less safe with a military at the breaking point,

BUT they are also incompetent fooles when it actually comes to the REAL al qaeda instead of the one they LIE about in Iraq.....

Too bad they wanted so hard to have al qaeda IN IRAQ they let the real al qaeda OUTSIDE IRAQ who really attacked us on 9-11 go free and reconstitute itself right back to what it was on sept 10th 2001.........

  92. Even the toe sucker Dick Morris has gotten it;

Are they traitors or prophets, these Republicans who have jumped ship and called for Bush to begin pulling out of Iraq — Sens. George Voinovich (Ohio), Richard Lugar (Ind.), John Warner (Va.), and Pete Domenici (N.M.)? More likely the latter. A look at the political map and the electoral calendar tells us that GOP Sens. Arlen Specter (Pa.), Norm Coleman (Minn.), Olympia Snowe (Maine), Susan Collins (Maine), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Gordon Smith (Ore.) are probably not far behind them.

If you haven’t been counting, that comes to 11 Republican defections —enough to force a vote even if the Dems lose Joe Lieberman (Conn.). A veto override? Add in the likes of marginal-state GOP senators like John Thune (S.D.), Kit Bond (Mo.), John Ensign (Nev.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and a handful of others and it’s possible. Retiring Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) might just do his party a favor on his way out.

    (snip)

Bush faces a stark choice: If he doesn’t begin pulling out, his party will lose the White House, lose Congress by stunning and likely filibuster-proof margins, and his tax cut and education reforms will be repealed. His footsteps will be obliterated from history. It will be as if he never served.

And if Bush doesn’t get it in time, there are enough sensible Republican senators to give him a wake-up call.

Allen, 48, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Park on East Broad St. in Titusville. The park was under surveillance by a detail of undercover police officers.

Officers say they noticed Allen acting suspicious as he went in and out of the men's restroom 3 times. Minutes later, he solicited an undercover male officer inside the restroom, offering to perform oral sex for $20. Officers realized he was a public figure after the arrest.

  102. Real Clear Politics, due to their different methodology, shows a bit more movement. Even then, however, the range of movement has been narrow. Since late February, Real Clear Politics shows Clinton’s national average varying from 32.7%--38.9%, Obama’s varying from 22.0%--25.8%, and Edwards varying from 10.3%--17.8%. None of these ranges are particularly wide, especially Clinton’s and Obama’s. As the Pollster.com chart shows, the slight variations from time to time in the Real Clear Politics average are almost certainly statistical noise, depending on little more than margin of error and which polling firms where included in the averages at any given point in time. Actual movement was probably, at most, one or two points in either direction.

Although fewer data points lead to somewhat less stable trend lines, the situation in early state polling is not much different. In Iowa, Edwards narrowly leads Clinton, who narrowly leads Obama, just as it has been for months. The only clear change is tht Richardson is trending up.In New Hampshire, since the beginning of the year, Clinton and Richardson are up a few points, while Edwards is down a few points. These slight movement are not much to write home about. In essence, the campaign is almost exactly where it was four or five months ago, except that Richardson has moved up a few points in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), approached by a group of reporters outside the lunch, offered an unexpected defense. “All of us have to look at it and say that we could be next,” he said in answer to a Vitter question. “We all think that we’re not vulnerable to something like that happening, but the fact is this can be a very lonely and isolating place.”

The investigations include "high ranking Republican and Democrat members of the Senate and the House," Flynt said at a press conference in Los Angeles, in which RAW STORY participated via conference call.

"We've got some really good information here," he said.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., revealed Monday night that he had been a client of alleged "DC Madam" Deborah Jean Palfrey after reporters working for Hustler called him about the allegations.

"If somebody's living a lie ... they become fair game," Flynt said, referring to Vitter's "family values" stances and opposition to same-sex marriage.

Flynt said his investigations were not meant to be witch-hunts against frisky members of Congress -- "I don't care what their sex life involves," he said -- rather the goal is exposing hypocrisy.

"Unfortunately we have too many of these guys in Congress, and I'm going to do my part to get them out," Flynt told reporters, adding that he doesn't mind spending his own money to do so.

  108. 'Chicago Sun-Times' Looks to Redefine Itself as 'Liberal, Working-Class' Paper!

The tabloid that shifted toward political conservatism under the brief ownership of Rupert Murdoch more than two decades ago now says that it is "rethinking our stance on several issues, including the most pressing issue facing Americans today: Bush's war in Iraq."

Under marching orders from Publisher John Cruickshank and Editor in Chief Michael Cooke, new Editorial Page Editor Cheryl L. Reed introduced a new Commentary section Tuesday with a promise to turn the tabloid back into the liberal-leaning paper it was for decades before the Reagan administration.

"We are returning to our liberal, working-class roots, a position that pits us squarely opposite the Chicago Tribune -- that Republican, George Bush-touting paper over on moneyed Michigan Avenue," Reed wrote. "We're rethinking our stance on several issues, including the most pressing issue facing Americans today: Bush's war in Iraq."

Reed, who did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment about the change, is the paper's former book editor who was asked by Cruickshank and Cooke to, she wrote, "conceive an editorial and opinion section that looked like the future."

Her instructions: "'Don't be conservative,' Cruickshank urged me. 'We don't want you to hold back.'"

Finally a paper I can read that won't have right wing gibberish, or phony troll infestation.

The Washington Times reports Jessica Hackerd was left in tears after Bush gave her a wry “yeah, thanks” in response to her query, drawing laughter from the crowd of 400 in Brecksville, Ohio Tuesday. Bush immediately began to backpedal when he saw the reaction from Hackerd, who told the Times she was crying because she is very shy and was nervous questioning the president.

I think Pelosi is just admitting that in the end she and the democrats would LOSE any court challenge because Bush will take all of them to the supreme court, and remember the court with out Alito and Roberts changed the rules to steal the election for Bush, why wouldn't they find some way to OK his special executive privilege that he asserts.

If they are willing to overturn the will of the majority of the US citizens in 2000, why wouldn't this much more reichwing court ignore the will of the people and congress this time?

  141. I dont think they could side with Bush Clif, regardless of their ideologies Bush doesnt have a legal leg to stand on.

    1) He allready claimed he had No knowledge of the firings and wasnt involved in any way..........Now if he had NO knowledge and wasnt involved in ANY way then executive privlige cant exist.....its moot!

    2) like Bartlebe said Executive privilge only exists for national security issues........this was clearly a domestic issue not related to national security in ANY way.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Mike I don't care what any body says, four of them VOTE reichwing no matter what the Law constitution or president says, so it would ONLY take ONE more Judge to overturn tenents of the seperation of powers and hand Bush what he wants.

If the supreme court says it is constitutional who tells them it is NOT.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Remember you NEED proof and LOTS of actual proof to get any majority to actually vote to impeach, and a hell of a lot convincing proof to get 17 republicans to Vote to convict in the senate, and IF your NOT willing to go that far, your wasting your and the country's time on a futile meaningless gesture, and the reichwing knows it which is why they are dragging their feet like they did today, and are going to do tomorrow.

They are trying to run the clock until after super Tuesday which is when both parties will know who is going to be the candidates, and then Bush ET AL think the american people will not be worried about impeachment but the election to replace Bush.

    ReplyDelete
  144. The Supreme Court voted against Bush on the torture Clif.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Besides even if the impeachment fails it will get all the crimes and scandals out in the open for the public to see with an election looming...........I see a failed impeachment hurting the repugs more than the democrats!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Mike they voted against the POLICY of Bush, not the same as actually Voting against the President, and the legal president about torture is MORE developed then the idea of executive privilege,

But YOUR ignoring the political calender...which is totally against the democrats especially wit the weeks flying by with very LITTLE real facts being established which are PROVED facts, because the reichwing KNOWS obscuration is a winning strategy as long as the time line only stretched until next spring, and then time for impeachment is gone.....no politician wants to be doing impeachment and re-election at the SAME TIME.

    ReplyDelete
  147. NO mike it will NOT the corporate MSM will continue to spin FOR the reichwing, and in the end they will claim the impeachment of Bush was payback for the attempt to impeachment of Clinton, which will make the claims of crimes a partisan argument, instead OF proving the crimes BEFORE the impeachment is begun, instead of pushing impeachment first PROVE the underlying crimes, REAL facts and proof, not just allegations which can NOT be substantiated.

Remember Scooter is the classic case of spin and disinformation, think of HOW much the reichwing will pull out if either Bush or Cheney faced impeachment itself?

Most of the people we need to talk are as brainwashed by the reichwing as Sara Taylor, they still believe what they did was right.

To them the ends justify the means they take, and laws are inconvenient facts for the people NOT trying to save america from the liberal hoards and muslim extremists, so they will NEVER talk till the kool aid wears off, which takes a LONG long time.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I'm a realist at heart, and DO NOT see impeachment because I can see the strategy the reichwing is employing to derail it as long as they need.

The tactics of executive privilege and brain dead testimony will keep the hearings from actually producing any thing from which to put together a real case until the time line runs out next spring, then NOBODY in congress will want to sit the summer and early fall trying to do something which is going to be done in November anyway.

Once you understand that, you can see how they are playing a losing hand into enough to survive this administration, and hopefully they will do enough to turn off 2/3 of the people so in 2009 we get a real majority in the house senate and white House which makes the reichwing irrelevant to the political process.

That is what Pelosi has realized from the start, they didn't have enough in Dec 2006 to push with, and either they fought to stop the war or they tried to impeach Bush and Cheney with very little chance of success, remember if Cheney is in office when Bush gets the boot we are worse OFF then if Bush is still there.

It may not be the correct liberal sound bite, BUT it is reality at this moment in time, and in the end I would rather the War end then Bush get impeached.

    ReplyDelete
  149. If they are playing strategically to take a resounding majority in congress AND the white house then that makes sense on SOME level.

However I have a tough time NOT seing Bush and Cheney held accountable!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Basically to get the impeachment of George Bush, you NEED 3 impeachments;

First impeach Gonzolas, other wise the DOJ will be obstructionist like they were under John Mitchell. The requirement of investigation of Bush Cheney or their staff if Gonzo is in charge of the DOJ will never vwork.

Then impeach Cheney, for his criminal behavior, but mainly because if Bush goes we get President Cheney, and is that what you want?

How long before Tehran is a glass lined parking lot?

How long before the rest of this planet is willing to take the US on to stop Cheney in his madness?

    Then impeach Bush,

however the timeline for three impeachments before next spring ain't there.

    ReplyDelete
  151. However I have a tough time NOT seing Bush and Cheney held accountable!

The people who fomented the Vietnam war were never held accountable,

Neither was the iran contra criminals.

A lot of greedy criminals get away with much more than murder in the name of politics, and never get held accountable,

I would rather we begin to work to undo the damage, then try to do something which will result in just more failed partisan ranting for another decade.

    ReplyDelete
  152. You have a sound point that I would NEVER want to see Cheney as president.

Gonzalez and Cheney should go at yje very least!

Ya left out a part of that Larry,

He's playing by your rules, Chimpleton.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Whether it's a matter of praticality or not, I think if there's going to be a nation of laws, then we have to haul the lawbreakers in.

Chimpy and his puppetmaster need to be made to understand that there are consequences for breaking the law.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Fine just explain in the current situation exactly how to do it with in the time constraints.

Otherwise you'll end up with what the reichwing got with Clinton, a sound bite to use at election time which Bush claims he was never convicted of anything.

Makes great blogging material, but little else.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Gonzalez should be an EASY impeachment.........how bout impeaching him for a start.........we can be like the repugs for once and say "its our due" or "we have political capital and we're going to spend it" or "we're throwing our "BASE" some red meat" or we can say its just for shits and giggles............or we can tell the truth and say the Constitution and the rule of law will not be compromised by criminals and accountability is a mandate!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Mike exactly what are the charges, and the proof, that those charges will stick, BTW understand the GOP is our modern day version of the OJ jury......because you need 17 of them to convict anybody because Lieberman will never vote to convict anybody.

If you don't have the 17 votes in the Senate you will waste a hell of a lot of time for nothing but more partisan ranting and good blog attack material.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Lying under oath

    politicizing the justice department

    incompetence

violating the Constitution............thats just off the top of my head.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I seem to remember AT LEAST 10 repugs demanding his resignation.........surely if they applied the pressure and made his corruption and incompetence a public issue MORE rats would jump ship with an election looming!

    ReplyDelete
  160. Fine Mike NOW just lay out the exact proof which can be testified to in his impeachment hearings, and convince me tat 17 republican members of the senate will accept that proof and VOTE to convict, other wise your laying out the exercise in futility the reichwing tried in 1998

    ReplyDelete
  161. Mike the republicans make good sound bites when necessary, but they always VOTE the GOP line, and on Impeachment they ain't going there unless they think their election depends on it, which for many of them Voting FOR impeachment would cost them those voters they depend the most on.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Oh and BTW there is that constitutionally requirement of appropriation bills for the US government they need to get done also.

There is so much which has to be done, that impeachment doesn't work, because IMPEACHMENT stops the Democrats plan to stop the war, remember riling up the GOP when your trying to split them down the middle doesn't produce very good results, and the war ending is the FIRST priority.

If you could ONLY get one wish answered, would it be

    end the War,

    or

    Impeach Bush Cheney ET AL?

I would rather the war end then any impeachment at all.

    ReplyDelete
  175. The way I see things with the election coming up the Democrats will tighten up just like you do in poker when a nut is trying to run over you........then when the RIGHT hand comes along get all your money in the center and let the buffoon know this ones for all the marbles and his life is on the line now.

When the democrats have the goods on one of the Neo Con clowns the "nuts" so to speak, provided we arent fully into the election cycle........thats when they will make it for all the marbles..........lets just hope the opportunity presents itself in the next 6 months.

Bush thinks its over and he's won and is a lock to survive his term he thinks no one can touch him or any of his cronnies...........maybe he's right but that fat lady hasnt sung yet.

    ReplyDelete
  176. thats a tough question if you only see it in black and white.........fort instance would impeaching Bush mean n Cheney took over?

Also whose to say impeaching Bush and Cheney wouldnt end the war as well.

But if I had to Choose only one I would choose to end the war if it would also tie Bush;s hands so he couldnt start a war in Iran nafter he pulled out of Iraq.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Mike Impeach Cheney first and BUSH gets to appoint his successor, which the senate confirms wanna bet John McCain's name or even WORSE Joe Lieberman's name comes up, WTF do we do then?

If the war is NOT ended before Jan 2009, Hillary will find a way to pull a Bill and use it to further the DLC agenda.

Ending the war is the first priority.

Who will show them their Waterloo?"

Thanks Punditman...........that was a historical similarity i was not aware of..........i'll actually google jacobins tomorrow, it sounds interesting, so many insightful and interesting perspectives on all the blogs!

    ReplyDelete
  179. What could we all do if Bush nominated Fred Thompson to replace Cheney, especially since a hell of a lot of neo-cons are signing on to Freddy's campaign including Mary Matlin and Liz Cheney.

We would have Freddy boy with power listening to former Cheney staffers.

Just curious guys,,,,,,,,,,,,if bush and Cheney were to run out their term and go free or even pardon themselves...........theoretically what could stop Hillary if she was the "DECIDER" to declare them enemy combatants and ship them off to some kangaroo court somewhere never to be heard from again..............or maybe we could ask them to redefine torture for us after a couple of months in one the Chateau Bush's that they created.

Three bank guards were able to pull of the largest heist in Iraqi history, making off with a stunning $282 million dollars from a private bank in central Baghdad, Aswat al-Iraq reports in Arabic.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an Interior Ministry source told Aswat al-Iraq that "three guards working for the Dar al-Salam Bank located on Sa'adoun Street in Central Baghdad were able to attack the bank . . . and stole a sum of up to $282 million dollars,...

Bush can't even guard money in a Baghdad Bank.

  189. Those Phony Republicans:

Early on the morning of Nov. 13, 2006, members of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group gathered around a dark wooden conference table in the windowless Roosevelt Room of the White House.

For more than an hour, they listened to President Bush give what one panel member called a "Churchillian" vision of "victory" in Iraq and defend the country's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki. "A constitutional order is emerging," he said.
Nov. 13, 2006: A Day of Testimony at the White House
Officials who met with the Iraq Study Group on that day in the White House Roosevelt Room.

Later that morning, around the same conference table, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden painted a starkly different picture for members of the study group. Hayden said "the inability of the government to govern seems irreversible," adding that he could not "point to any milestone or checkpoint where we can turn this thing around," according to written records of his briefing and the recollections of six participants.

"The government is unable to govern," Hayden concluded. "We have spent a lot of energy and treasure creating a government that is balanced, and it cannot function."

Poor Bush: He can't get his lies straight with the rest of his boys.

At a White House press conference Thursday, President Bush acknowledged that someone in his administration leaked the name of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame.

A reporter brought up Bush's decision to commute the prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and asked the president to weigh in on the "morality" of his advisers leaking the name.

"I'm aware of the fact that perhaps somebody in the administration did disclose the name of that person (Plame)," Bush said, "and, you know, I've often thought about what would have happened had that person come forth and said, 'I did it.' Would we have had this, you know, endless hours of investigation. ... It's been a tough issue for a lot of people in the White House, and it's -- it's run its course, and now we're going to move on."
