Are You Better Off?

As we are entering the season where the focus shifts to the next election, we see a group of Republican candidates espousing the ongoing war and comparing themselves to their view of the perfect President Ronald Reagan.

As progressives maybe we need to quote Ronald Reagan from time to time in addressing the issues of today. Reagan asked a famous question during the debates of the 1980 election season that brought him to prominence. This question applies today as well.

Are you better off today than you were six years ago? Do you feel that your job is secure now that gas prices have risen well above three dollars per gallon and predictions that they will reach four dollars seem very real?

Are you better off today with the President having the country bogged down in a war in Iraq with no end in sight? Have you gained any benefit from the war in Iraq, or has it cost this country in ways we will never recover?

Are you better off with the majority of the world turning against us and those in the Middle East planning to bring the United States down? Are you safer with the choices that this President and his Republican allies have made in foreign policy?

Are you better able to afford college costs for your children under the economy of George W Bush? Are you confident that your children will be able to afford a home, or raise a family with the direction our country is going?

Are you confident you and your family will have affordable health care in the future, or has the decisions of deficits and war brought that confidence to an end? Are the forty seven million Americans without health care better off today than they were six years ago?

Are the thirty seven million low-income Americans living in poverty better off today than they were six years ago? Are the twenty six million Americans receiving food stamps better off or do they face a Food Stamp program in peril?

Are we better off as a nation to have many of our privacy rights taken away? Are we confident we can trust those in government to protect our identities and our privacy or will we continue to see computers disappear, personal records compromised and our privacy in peril?

Are we winning any of the wars this President has started? Are we better off to coax a war with Iran? Have we seen oil prices fall from the take over of Iraqi oil? Do we have more allies today that we had six years ago?

These are but a few questions that as an American you can ask. These questions go to the basic principle of life in America today. As you hear the Republican candidates espouse war and claim the moniker of Reagan, ask your self the Reagan question. Are we better off today under Republican leadership than we were six years ago.?

  6. EXCELLENT questions Larry...........I've asked all of those for quite a while and I think the Economy and "are you better off today" will come front and center as we enter a recession towards the end of the year.

When gas is $4 a gallon and inflation is running at closer to 8% than the bogus 3% claimed and people start losing jobs and the value of their homes declines...........these will become front and center campaign issues just as the War in Iraq is today!

  7. Well, clearly, Larry, we are not. The only people better off than they were six years ago are the very wealthy.

  15. Sunni Arab guerrillas set off a massive bomb in front of the HQ of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the small town of Makhmur southeast of Mosul. The KDP was holding a security conference at the time, and police and judicial officials were among the 67 dead and 70 wounded (Al-Hayat in Arabic]. The town falls in Ninevah Province, on the border with Iraqi Kurdistan. Some nationalistic Kurds have made a map that shows Kurdistan annexing parts of provinces where there are substantial Kurdish populations, including parts of Ninevah. Moreover, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have been deployed for security purposes by provincial authorities. So it seems likely that the Sunni Arab attack had several goals. It stopped the security conference, it struck at Kurdish Peshmerga helping with the imposition of security and fighting the guerrillas, and it marked Ninevah as an Arab province where Kurds are imperilled. The guerrillas probably hope that Kurdish families will desert Makhmur and move to Irbil, thus forestalling the plans of Kurdish nationalists to annex parts of Ninevah.

Looks like the surge ain't gonna solve any problems especially since it NEVER deals with the roots of the three way civil war, with the Sunni, Shiite and Kurds factions fighting each other in different places for control and separate factions of each fighting amonst themselves where they do have complete control like the inter Shiite struggle in Basra for control or the fighting between separate factions of Sunnis for control of Anbar province.

  23. Larry & Lydia, don't faint when you see me posting here! I just had to respond to this one, because yes, I am better off than I was six years ago. Certainly I might not say that if I'd had a loved-one killed in Iraq, but on the other hand, although you won't find them posting here, there are mothers, fathers, wives... who feel such a sacrifice was not in vain. There are several sides to that issue, in fact so many that I still am not clearly decided where I come down on that one. I am very clear though on the economic issue, at least personally. Financially, I am definitely better off than six years ago. Now I'm sure you're wondering about my income category -- am I rich? Honestly, I'm not sure which category my net worth gets me into, but I will admit to being sure I'm not poor. The great news is: Neither is my housekeeper. She drives a $40,000 SUV and owns a nice condo -- single African-American woman, by the way. Another thing I'm sure of is that I have more money than my parents did. Still, back in the 1960s my mother also had a housekeeper -- maids, as they were called, were easier to afford back then -- and her situation was a bit different than a housekeeper of today. SUV? Neither my mother's maid Rosa nor Rosa's husband who worked full-time at the sawwmill owned a car at all. Condo? Compare that to a mill-camp house with no indoor plumbing. Hmm...maybe that trickle-down thing works better than you realize. Y'all have a beautiful day, and Lydia, you're going to hear from me again in just a second! Love, Victoria

Worfeus, VH might not feel so well off if (she) realized Pakistan is melting down politically and the extremists in that country are the most organized to take control of it, especially if they are able to topple Musharraf, and still have Bin Laden and the Taliban using parts of the country as training and logistical areas. They might see handing a nuke or two to the Taliban-Bin Laden cabal as payment for services rendered especially if both promise not to detonate a nuke in Pakistan.

If Musharraf falls Iraq is not going to matter much because what Bush claimed about Iraq would be true in Pakistan, too bad we would no longer have a military to do much about it since Bush has it stuck in a quagmire in Baghdad ET AL. See people driving $40,000 gas guzzling SUV's is the problem NOT the solution.

Now that we are at Peak Oil we need need Progressives with the forsight to end our dependency on imorted foreign oil from countries that hate us not brag about housekeepers driving $40,000 gas guzzling SUV's like it is some kind of prestigious status symbol to be admired.

  46. Yes, Mike, I totally agree about SUV's and what they represent. However, that's another point, not the one I was making, which was all about how well most people actually are doing in this country compared to years ago, when, indeed, most women did not work outside the home, but I think, not because they didn't need the extra money, but for many other reasons, which would be better covered in another post. Do you really know A LOT of people who are in true need today? Consider TRUE NEED before you answer. They're out there, but MOST Americans are doing fabulously well compared with the rest of the world. And, yes, I can afford a housekeeper, but I've been broke -- completely broke -- and even then I knew I was blessed, and even though I didn't own a home or a car, I knew I had all I NEEDED. That was during the Carter administration. I admired him then and now, and it never occurred to me to blame him or anyone else for my situation. Thanks, Mike, for recognizing the identity confusion -- and especially for the apology -- they're not always easy.

However, there are 8 million more people without health insurance, there are 30 million more people who filed bankruptcy, and another 10 million who would if the Congress hadn't tightened bankruptcy laws. There are now more people below the poverty line than in 2000.

Do "I" know a LOT of people in true need?

The answer would have to be no, and yes as a nation we may be doing fabulously well compared to most of the world.............howver that does not negate the fact that most of us are less well off than we were 6 years ago.............good paying middle class jobs are being outsourced overseas, and our standard of living as a nation is declining.......we are on the WRONG track as a nation and the next generation will have a lower standard of living due to the greed and incompetence of this administration regarding trade, tax equity, the national debt and outsourcing of labor and manufacturing.

I think it is OUR responsibilility to insure that the next generations, our children and grandchildren do not have a declining standard of living.

Victoria you may be right that there were OTHER reasons as well why women did not work outside the home 30-40 years ago............however that does not negate the simple fact that they did not NEED to for financial survival then............im almost positive if we polled the vast majority of our nation today and asked most households if they could survive on one income today the overwhelming answer would be NO!

  75. TAMING THE GIANT CORPORATION:
A National Conference on Corporate Accountability

    Presented by Ralph Nader and
The Center for Study of Responsive Law

    June 8, 9 and 10, 2007

    1530 P Street, NW
    Washington, DC 20005

The multinational corporation is the dominant institution in the global political economy. The toll it inflicts on people and the planet — high drug prices, sweatshops, global warming, and on and on — is well documented.

But too little attention has been focused on the corporation itself, and the evolving forms of corporate power. “Taming the Giant Corporation” aims to identify, examine and classify the changing manifestations of corporate power.

The conference’s central, pioneering task is to facilitate discussion, debate and strategic thinking about how to subordinate corporate power to the will and interests of the people. How do we replace the excessive corporate privileges and immunities entrenched in law and the economy?

Corporations were originally chartered by the states in the early nineteenth century to be our servants not our masters.

How can we displace corporations (e.g., with national health insurance, by keeping information and knowledge in the public domain, or by expanding and strengthening the commons)? What tools and approaches can empower communities to set parameters on corporate activity? What countervailing institutions should be nurtured to offset concentrated corporate power?

“Taming the Giant Corporation” will be an opportunity to learn, debate, meet leading advocates and activists, and grapple with the questions that must be answered if we are to strive for a just and livable world.

I am not talking about a handful. Estimate range from 3 and a half million to 15 million, depending on the study. And more than FORTY PERCENT of these are FAMILES!!!!!

And that doesn't take into consideration those incarcerated who if not in prison, would otherwise be indigent and homeless.

It is unseemly that anyone boasting of their maids new minivan would brag about how few people of need there are in this country.

That is a rather bizare blanket sweeping generalization that sounds more like a Neo Con sweeping generalization from Fascist Fan than a reasoned progressive statement based on facts.

To say that "ALL" corporations are evil and that amassing wealth in private hands is ALWAYS bad is riddiculous and reeks of communism..........Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and George Soros are richer than almost ALL the Neo Cons and do Great good with their assets while not being corrupted by greed.

Saying everything should be held in the public trust for the good of ALL workers is fascist......all we need is more equitable policies for ALL not just the top 1%.

Ideology never fed a starving kid, never mended a fence, never planted a crop. Ideologues suck, no matter their ideologies.

The essential purpose of any Government is to look out for the welfare of all of the governed-Government should be an evenhanded arbiter among all forces within a society. When a Governmnent starts serving one segment of society to the detriment of all others, that Government has no legitimate reason to exist.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I doubt that Bush would appoint any Attorney General that wasn't in his inner circle.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Gonzo can't go because the replacement for John Mitchell Elliot Richardson made guarantees to congress he would approve a independent council for Watergate which started the investigations which uncovered the true scope of the cover up and the attempt by Nixon known as the Saturday Night Massacre was the real reason so many turned on Nixon and his claims of innocent, because if he had nothing to hide he wouldn't be trying to stonewall Archibald Cox, and asking people to fire him, which a certain DOJ third in charge named Robert Bork finally did.

If Gonzo is unseated the US senate gets to "approve" Bush's replacement and Rove knows if that happens then much is open to asking like getting a new special prosecutor from the DOJ which the President can't claim executive privilege from like Nixon could not.

So Bush backs Gonzo to the bitter end hoping the congress wastes their time trying to impeach him, and runs out of time before it can get enough evidence to actually hold impeachment hearings against dead eye and the id-jet himself.

  197. As it turns out, John Ashcroft may have been a flake, but he turns out to have some redeeming character.

He does. Asscrock actually tried to stay within the law, although his interpretation of the law was often stretchy, to say the least.

  198. His buttons were being pushed more than we know I think. From what we are seeing now, its possible Aschroft actually fought with the Administration on a somewhat ongoing basis.

I will be anxious to see if he has anything to say on the matter.

  199. Man did you guys watch Jon Stewart?

Tim Russert was clearly just FED UP, and tired of being neutral.

He railed on the administration and their unwillingess to talk to the congress or the people.

Howard Fineman railed on Gonzo on Countdown for his "smirking" attitude while snubbing his nose at congress and the American people.

    Its getting close now.
