  1. Anyone serious about making a change in the world, needs to be watching the debates this evening.

Our next leader is most likely on that stage.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Course its only the next president of the United States. I guess we'd all rather just call each other child molesters and stuff, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  3. We'll I'm watching the debates. Chances are the person I'm going to end up voting for may be on that stage.

At least thats what I am praying for.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Not necessarily, because none of these primary winners were declared canidates at this time in the respective process;

June 12, 1999 - Bush embarks on first campaign trip to Iowa and declares, ``I'm running for president ... and there is no turning back.''

June 16, 1999 - Vice President Al Gore announces his candidacy in Carthage,

On October 3, 1991, Bill Clinton declared his candidacy for President of the United States

As the 1970s came to a close, Former Governor Ronald Reagan was the odds-on favorite to win his party's nomination for president (after nearly beating incumbent President Gerald Ford just four years earlier). He was so far ahead in the polls that campaign director John Sears decided on an "above the fray" strategy. He did not attend many of the multicandidate forums and straw poll events held in the summer and fall of 1979.

It is simply far to far out of the time frame and Gary Hart was a "lock" until Donna Rice happened......

The last time a NON President/Vice President who won that had declared this early was Jimmy Carter.

  5. Well thats a good point.

Al Gore may still announce. In fact I think he will, if no one stands out tonight.

But this is a big deal tonight.

  6. Who the hell is Mike Gravel? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  7. A former Alaskan senator;

Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel (pronounced Gruh-VELL) (born May 13, 1930), was a Democratic United States Senator from Alaska for two terms, from 1969 to 1981. He is primarily known for having put into the public record the Pentagon Papers in 1971. He is currently a candidate for the 2008 Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

  8. I know who he is Clif, I was just kidding.

I think Kucinch has the best plan for a withdrawal of our troops to be replaced by international peacekeepers.

It is a sound plan. I'll have to see what the others have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Actually this Mike gravel sounds pretty smart.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He just laid it out.

    Did you see Hilary?

She looked like she was going to have a canary.

  11. Okay, I want all the good bloggers to come back and post, and I am banning all the trolls who post personal insults and drag this blog down.

I've been gone for 2 days, and have an all day event tomorrow, then the radio show we are pre-recording the Media Matters scandal with Bill O'Reilly.

    We'll have Media Matters on.

Please post your opinions about the debates or news but not your personal insults or peoples's home phone numbers and information.

I am sick of this blog being hijacked.

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That was very smart of Biden.

He scored on that one word answer.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That Mike Gravel is awesome.

Unfortunately he'll never probably be president, but he sure is something.

He is definately not a mainstream candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He's like Clubber Lang.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If Hillary really wants CHANGE then we need something other then a Bush or Clinton in the white house...........

    ReplyDelete
  16. 20 years of Bush-Clinton is LONG enough

    ReplyDelete
  17. OT

Mr. Bush, Tear Down These Walls!

    Scott Ritter —

With his security barrier in Baghdad, a wall along the Mexican border and the provocative missile defense shield plan in Europe, President Bush’s interest in barrier-building is a betrayal of his conservative forebears that does not bode well for the spread of freedom and democracy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Obama is just making speeches.

    ReplyDelete
  19. "Democratic presidential candidate and New York Senator Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that it might be necessary for America to confront Iran militarily,....Still, she said, all avenues should be explored, since "if we do have to take offensive military action against Iran, it would be far better if the rest of the world saw it as a position of last resort, not first resort, because the effect and consequences will be global."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hillary wants it BOTH ways, pro attack Iran, for the neo-cons, and anti war fro the democrats.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hillary would be a little smarter then reminding of her failed medical care initiative where she was NOT very democratic about it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Richardson doesn't know when to shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Obama is nervous talking about the NAACP and South Carolina, Biden did much better

    ReplyDelete
  24. They aren't giving Gravel equal time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Damn Hillary can't refrain from repeating her worst moment her health care fiasco

    ReplyDelete
  26. Obama was told one sentence, and he answers with 39 sentences.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Biden answer is very good.

So was Edwards, they both admitted they trusted Bush ET Al too much

    ReplyDelete
  28. Richardson is telling a story for a question he was supposed to answer with one sentence.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yea, but I can't vote for a guy who plays with his hair as much as Edwards.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bidens really on his game tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Listen to Edwards protecting the oil giants.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kusinich BLEW the question because he tried to qualify himself as a middle class person when he is a high paid politician

    ReplyDelete
  33. Man Richardson is sweating.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your right Richardson can't STFU when he needs to

    ReplyDelete
  35. Obama blew the question, he is filibustering because he is not sure what the PC answer is

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why can't these guys just say it short?

Biden is the only one up there who knows when to shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Looks Like AIPAC wants to see if Obama passes their test, and he failed it

    ReplyDelete
  38. And they've all but ignored Gravel.

They've only asked him like 3 questions all night.

    What bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He had to be reminded by Brian Williams Israel was the most important ally according to the MSM and AIPAC.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Gravel is NOT either the MSM or DLC choice

    ReplyDelete
  41. Biden is making lots of sense.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Gravel has JUST totally destroyed the MSM game, we don't need to pick enemies feed the Military Industrial complex, Williams is working from a pro neo-con script right now

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well it's over;

Biden helped himself, he was te clearest and did a good job,

and Mike Gavel did show some real fortitude in his answers but he is only really a VP choice

Definite LOSER Hillary, with Richardson a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well I guess we're the only two Clif who care about the democratic debates.

Well I give it to Kucinich. He made the most sense up there.

Biden made some good points but his last statement trying to sound hawkish made him sound too war mongerery. Gravel was excellent, but hasn't a prayer.

    Clinton sucked. Obama sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Biden was clear and precise in his answers! No BS with that guy! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  46. The rest muddled thru, Edwards did show a little, and Kusinich did good but he will never be a first tear candidate,

but they didn't stand out well enough to claim any sort of victory.

    ReplyDelete
  47. However if Gas goes to $4 dollars a gallon(this summer) and any bad hurricanes like Katrina and Rita happen again, this debate is basically moot because they never even touched any of that which real people will suffer from

    ReplyDelete
  48. Here is the Worfeus official tally.

I give it to Kucinich first, Biden second, Gravel 3rd, Dodd 4th, Richardson 5th, Obama 6th, Edwards 7th, and Clinton 8th.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Suzie-Q said...

I was really impressed with Biden.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The Iraq wart is the issue of the election till 4-5 dollar a gallon gas hits, then most americans will return to their back pocket like they did in 1992.

    ReplyDelete
  51. $3.15 for gas, after Katrina freaked people out,

$5 will totally scramble their minds.

    and the electoral process.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Actually I'd give Gravel second, but he was a little too rabid.

While I liked it, and agree with the sentiment, he is running for president. No one will elect a rabid president.

He needs to keep the fire and lose the foam.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Worfeus with out the rabid foam he won't get the press he needs right now, which is why a former US senator who KNOWS how the game is played is doing what he is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Damn, I missed it,,,,,,,,,,,hillary doing poorly doesnt surprise me theres no way she will win.

Biden sounding good doesnt either he sounded good on Meet The Press a few months ago.

Richardson dooing poorly surprises me though.......I assumed he would have a great energy policy similar to what Jimmy Carter proposed 30 years ago that set up the 20 year economic boom of the 80's and 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Not a democratic debate remark, BUT this could cost him dearly;

    from TPM

Mitt Romney: Catching Bin Laden not worth the money it would cost.

    -- Greg Sargent

It's still all about MONEY with the repug clowns isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Did Obama say alot of nothing..............he just seems like the classic democratic politician playing not to lose rather than playing to win.

He seems like he doesnt want to take a stand or a real position on an issue........and for a relatively unknown with not much experience he NEEDS to take a stand and let people know what he's about rather than trying to be PC and all things to all people........that comes across as insincere just look at McCaine.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yea Mike. Obama was all over the place. He sounded like a slick politician.

Chris Matthews calls that sounding "presidential". I call it bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thats amazing Clif about Bin Laden and what Sargent said.

But he felt Saddam was worth 700 billion dollars and counting?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Worfeus Romney is trying to get AIPAC approval and his neo-con stamp of approval.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Damn the clinton talking head don't have a clue does she?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hillary will not get the nomination, cause the country has Bush-Clinton fatigue....

    ReplyDelete

Let me see Clif capturing the guy who REALLY attacked us and started this so called War on Terror isnt important or worth it but an illegal failure and occupation of a country that had nothing to do with either attacking us or the War on Terror that could cost over a trillion dollars before its over and then will still be a miserable failure that has achieved nothing other than making the entire world hate us and making us much less safe IS WORTH IT??????????

I sure hope these clowns try to run with that issue for 2008 because that will be the enmd of these goosestepping fools.

I'm sick and tired of their delusional irrational lies and dishonest talking points and hippocrissy and from now on EVERYTIME I hear one of them these clowns will receive no quarter or mercy their illogical irrational BS will be ripped to shreds and laid bare for all to see.

    ReplyDelete
  63. No she doesn't Clif.

Grunwald is on drugs if she thinks they "won" anything.

I picked Kucinich for his preciseness, candor and moral clarity. But as for who actually has a chance to be president?

Joe Biden probably did the best in that respect. Dodd wasn't bad either.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm watching the Devils game...anybody taking the spotlight?

    ReplyDelete
  65. 700 billion, soon to be a trillion Worf........isnt it a sinful waste.......they are committing murder in our name, squandering OUR money and achieving NOTHING but polarizing the world to hate us!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Matthews just made sense.

He pointed out Gravels argument about just admitting the war was wrong and correcting that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Mike said...
700 billion, soon to be a trillion Worf........isnt it a sinful waste.......

    Its a sin.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jim Webb has said Iraq will cost this country 2 trillion before all costs were paid.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Gravel just told Tweety he was WRONG which is a polite way to say he LIED or failed to properly check the facts.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Clif,

I think Webb is underestimating his figure. We're up near a trillion already and it's only been what? Four, five years?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Gavel is basically calling Tweety STUPID, and I think Olbermann is laughing in the background when he is doing that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. webb is basing his figures on what it costs and the recovery after all the troops came home, and the equipment is being repaired and replaced

    ReplyDelete
  73. Gravel is right, and he has a strategy to end the war.

Its the same one I endorsed in here about 5 months ago.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Fascist Foole mentioned the end of the repug party last night I think we are witnessing the beginning of the end for the repug Party........it started in November and it is gathering steam..

GWB and his War of Folly in Iraq will destroy the repug party..........I predict that in 5-10 years the repug party will either fracture into more than one party or change its name and redefine what it stands for to try to stem the tide away from what they have become.

    ReplyDelete
  75. If you count the cost of caring for the 25000+ disabled vets from this illegal war, it could end up being 5 trillion over 50 years..........

and gaydalf will call all of them lazy people who refuse to work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Mike Gravel for President!

    ReplyDelete
  77. See? The spin room is saying Kucinich "set the tone" of the debate.

DAMN. Do you see his SMOKIN wife?

    Holy crap.

    ReplyDelete
  78. How does a little guy like Kucinich get such a smokin hot wife?

    ReplyDelete
  79. OOPS

Presidential hopeful's son arrested in Ark. with gun

David Huckabee, a son of former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, was arrested on Thursday after trying to board an airliner with a loaded pistol, police said.

Huckabee, 26, was jailed after an X-ray of his carry-on bag revealed the weapon, identified in a police report as a Glock .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol containing eight live rounds of ammunition.

Huckabee appeared later in the day before a municipal judge and pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying a weapon into a prohibited area. He was fined $855, sentenced to a year of supervised probation and ordered to perform 10 days of community service. A one-year jail sentence was suspended.

Fox to help pick GOP debate participants

Fox News will have a say in deciding which Republican presidential candidates participate in next month's debate in South Carolina.

State Party chairman Katon Dawson and a spokesman for the news channel said Thursday that they had agreed on a criteria, including polling numbers, for choosing which of the 10 GOP candidates will take part in the May 15 debate.

"We understand there's not room for everybody on a nationwide political stage for a Republican debate," Dawson said.

Marty Ryan, executive producer of political programming for Fox News Channel, said the polling criteria would ensure "that serious candidates were taking part in our debate."

The party sent a letter to the candidates saying they must have filed papers establishing an exploratory committee or full-blown candidacy and paid the fees associated with the state primary.

They also must have "garnered at least 1 percent in recent state and national polls leading up to the registration deadline, as determined by Fox News Channel and the South Carolina Republican Party," according to Rob Godfrey, the state party's communications director.

In a variety of national and state polls, seven of the 10 candidates hover around 1 percent or less. Only Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney easily meet the criteria based on polling.

The standard has the potential to bar several candidates from the debate and anger the lesser-known GOP hopefuls.

Dawson said the criteria was jointly developed so "we wouldn't have people who were just willing to pay a filing fee and think that they could show up and be on the stage. There are a lot of people who would like to be able to vent their special interests on a presidential stage."

"If you're not in the poll number and you haven't met the criteria, no, you won't be able to get on the stage," he said.

State parties run the presidential primary balloting in early voting South Carolina. Presidential hopefuls must file with the state GOP and pay their primary entry fee by May 1 to qualify to participate in the May 15 debate in Columbia. Giuliani was the first to do so last week. McCain did so on Thursday.

All 10 Republican candidates will be participating in the first Republican debate next Thursday at the Reagan Library in California

  82. Kuchinich advertised for a wife after the 2004 elections. He had many different women replied and he dated several.

I guess this younger wife wants to replace pickles.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Now I know why the neocons hate us.

Cause we get the good looking women.

    And they get Ann Coulter.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Smokin and young. A great replacement for Pickles.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Or Micheal Malkin

    ReplyDelete
  86. To a neocon Coulter is probably smokin.

    Smokin ugly to everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Funny the gutless chicken hawk trolls have NOTHING to say............

    ReplyDelete
  88. They are looking at their Coulter pinup.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Malkin looks like she got smacked in the face with a frying pan.

    ReplyDelete
  90. If Gore would have been there tonight, the stage would have been all his!

    I hope he runs! :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Which would explain why her eyes spin counter clockwise like that.

    ReplyDelete
  92. A crooked, rusted, cracked frying pan.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Gore is the one. I'd like to see Gore grab Kucinich for a running mate.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Gore won't run. The Democrats turned on him after the election was stolen.

  103. Worf:

Biden started to answer a question but he first said the Republicans are rooting for Hillary are misjudging her if she wins.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Coulter is the reincarnation of Berlin Betty.

Only I heard Berlin Betty was a female.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Would you want to use something that dreadful to clean your pipe?

Yea I saw that but I thought he was just being flattering. Now that you mention it, yea, maybe he wants to take the back seat.

We'll have to see. Biden talks a good game but folds when the chips are down usually.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Coulter makes Jeanne Kirkpatrick look like a beauty queen.

Olberman responded to Tweety when Tweety was commenting on the "lack of time" when there is 10 candidates,

Olberman replied You(Tweety) would do all the talking........

    ReplyDelete
  116. Mathews hates the war and despises the Neo Cons........that makes him ok in my book...........he was just about the only one attacking these liars a few years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Richardson was wordy, but he was thoughtful. I am more confortable with him now than I was before the debates even.

Hill found a way to not pander to the polls. Biden...... there was once such promise there.

  119. However if Gas goes to $4 dollars a gallon(this summer) and any bad hurricanes like Katrina and Rita happen again, this debate is basically moot because they never even touched any of that which real people will suffer from.

Given the condition of the currency basket, $4 a gallon is a certainty. Maybe more. I'd stake my reputation as a curmudgeon on it.

I agree, I think its a certainty as well going to $4 is inly a 25% rise we see that most normal summers or worse, if there is a hurricain or any trouble in the Middle East we may see $5 a gallon or more!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I wish they would fire Carlson. He loves war and everything Bush does.

    ReplyDelete
  122. $4 gas will further destroy the trucking industry.

    ReplyDelete
  123. War lover John McCain told an audience that the Iraq war was a grave tragedy, but the war lover says the troops should stay there.

    ReplyDelete
  127. $4 a gallon gas will also cause thousands to lose their jobs, thousands to face foreclosure and bankruptcy.

    ReplyDelete
  128. John Stewart was all over McCain about the war, and McCain was getting hot under the collar.

    ReplyDelete
  129. $4 gas will kill more than trucking it will kill all fast food and minimum wage type retail jobs.

There's a perverse side effect that nobody's condidered yet.

When the cost of transportation gets high enough, it will become viable to begin to make some things locally again. In the beginning we'll notice this mostly in things like produce, but as time goes on, other things will become more viable as locally-produced items.

I'm thinking we can't be very far from that kind of a breaking point with a lot of items right now. Of course, we've destroyed our own industrial base and will have to start almost from scratch on a lot of things. It might be a good time for the gifted innovator to begin checking wind direction.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Too bad we have so many wal-mart McDonalds trained workers who can't think for themselves and want everything prepackaged, they are gonna go hungry for a while....

"IF" and its a big "IF" there is a severe oil shock and gas goes to between $5-$10 a gallon, people will be scrambling to ditch the gas guzzling SUV's and get hybrids and very fuel efficient cars............If the big three actually have relatively attractive fuel efficient cars at fairly attractive prices it could be a bon to the auto industry that could bring them back from the brink of disaster...........think if 50% to 70% of Americans traded their gas guzzlers for new more fuel efficient cars.

Its just a thought......but certainly something I hadnt considered before.......previously all i could envision was the American auto companies moving all operations overseas to utilize cheaper labor and avoid pension liabilities and taxes.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Well I didnt see it.....but that just sounds like the big money MSM trying to herd the sheep towards a particular candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  142. That is a good point Mike. The auto industry has one foot in the foreign waters now so they may already be prepared.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Suzie Q has a video on her blog of Gavel attacking people at the debate.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Hi Lydia,

IMHO, nobody won the debate tonight.

Biden was good but not the winner by any means.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Edwards did well but he seemed distracted. Probably worrying about his wife I would say.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Gavel was the most aggressive. He made Kuchinich look timid.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Well I think for sure production will shift overseas and eventually probably everything............but think if everyone just went out and bought new fuel efficient cars because of $10 a gallon gas........the auto industry could do ok for a few years if they could quicly respond and meet demand with attractive fuel efficient cars priced reasonably?

    ReplyDelete
  148. The only problem Mike is would people get laid off before they brought out these cars?

If there were massive layoffs, which trickle down through every industry, then people couldn't buy the cars.

It would probably all depend on how fast they brought out the new lines.

    ReplyDelete
  149. LOL, that video was pretty funny, Obama was funny!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Gavel was on Chris Matthews during his interview because he gets no press.

I bet C-Span will show it again before long.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I'm sure there would be mass layoffs Larry, probably 25%-30% of the population could be laid off but people will still need cars and MANY would likely want to trade in their cars now for cheap fuel efficient ones and if cheap cars were available it MIGHT revive the auto industry for a type and keep the economy from imploding completely.

I think the government would also try to get people working by funding massive public works projects like building mass transit and public transportation facilities and infrastructure and investing heavily in solar and wind power.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I never even heard of gavel till tonight

    ReplyDelete
  153. But yeah I envision an oil shock that severe being similar to the Great Depression.

    ReplyDelete
  154. If they could revive the auto industry that would help alot of others.

For every person who is laid off, 5 more end up losing their jobs in different occupations.

It is a trickle down result.

    ReplyDelete
  155. If Bush is still President the government won't have massive projects to jump start the economy.

    Bush helps the ultra rich.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Goodnight you guys! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  157. And if that happened you would see similar New Deal type progressive inititives to create decent paying middle class jobs like FDR did in the 1930's.

I think we are going to see a movement to shore up unions and create good paying jobs like we had in the 1930's to the 1960's and like there is in Europe today were the focus is to create jobs and increase peoples quality of life rather than to enrich the wealthyy elite at the expense of everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  158. If Bush is still President we will probably have martial law and a Dictatorship ruled by a tyrant.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Good night Suzie.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Bush would love to impose martial law. He would go wild if that happens.

It would be the perfect excuse for a madman.

    ReplyDelete
  161. If we can just make it till next year with no wars with Iran or anyone else and no collapse of the dollar, and can get a democrat whos smart and decent as President we may be ok.

We'll still have to deal with the Energy Crisis and End the war in Iraq and try to dismantle the police state Bush has tried to create and restore the Constitution, rebuild our economy and try to restore our internation reputation but with Bush gone it will be like a new day dawning and the sun coming out after a terrible storm.

    ReplyDelete
  162. In don't know if this mess Bush has made in every area can be fixed.

There are so many disasters both in the U.S and abroad that it will take years to repair.

    ReplyDelete
  163. It could take decades to repair the damage Bush has done.........we need to learn from this and say "NEVER AGAIN" and make it more difficult for a fool like GWB to ever become president.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I hope that before this is all over, that the Republican party will be completely destroyed.

Maybe that will clear out the Falwell's and Donson's.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I think that within 10 years the repug party will be so descimated they will either fracture into several parties or change their name and redefine what they stand for.........America is shifting away from what they are and its a sea change tidal wave that cant be stopped..........America has shifted hard to the left and the corporate fascist Reich Wing empire is trying to fight the tide as hard as possible but you cant fight a trend this powerful, tyou either have to embrace it and adapt or perish and become irrelevant and i think we wiill see both from the repugs.

The hard line Neo Cons will be swept into irrelevance while the mainstream repugs will shift to the left and become much more moderate after 2008!

    ReplyDelete
  166. Once the Falwell's and Dobson's fsde away, the neocons like Delay and Gingrich will have nobody left to carry their bathwater.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Well like I said, I didnt see the debates but after watching it does anyone think Gores going to run?????????????????

    ReplyDelete
  168. I don't think he will run. I think he has had enough from 2000.

He has something going now anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Well I think for sure production will shift overseas and eventually probably everything..

At some point in the price of fuel, that's not a viable option anymore.

The ore, remember, is also here. The cost of shipping out the steel and shipping back the finished product could be crippling.

    ReplyDelete
  170. And it will be the "big box" guys that fail first, unless they find a way to change their purchasing model to draw on local resources. I really don't think they can.

  171. We will no longer be able to waste hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel driving Ding Dings and Ho Hos down the interstate in 18 wheel trucks to fatten the children of this country.

  172. As far as who "won"..... I think Hill did herself a couple of favors tonight. But I am ambivalent about who, if anyone, stood out.

  173. If Jolly has Coulter lovers attacking him he must be doing something right.

I have a special name for her that really offends some of her more rabid fans (and I suspect that they are literally rabid.)

I got threatened so often after one of my more colorful posts that I slipped a few more keywords into the comment checker to keep them from appearing. I do, however, still see those comments in the log files, and I had a couple of "friends" who felt that I needed to be emailed. One of those emails was so beautiful that I sent a copy of it to the sender's ISP for their consideration. Haven't seen the guy since.

  174. The White House finally admitted that Karl Rove held political meetings with officials in 15 government agencies on political matters.

These meetings were held at the General Services Administration headquarters.

The Office of Special Council had launched an investigation into this before the White House admitted Rove held these politial meetings.

Holding these meetings to use workplace pressure to influence the election outcome and using government property in these meetings is against federal law.

Wonder why Rove still has a job when the White House admitted he is guilty?

  181. Morning guys,

I didn't watch the debates last night, because it's wayyyyy to early in the cycle, in my opinion. So much will change in the world over the next year that it's pointless. As Jolly Roger points out, aside from Iraq (or its aftermath), there's very few topics they'd talk about last night that will interest me in 2008

This was a media show, and I'm afraid the media is the big winner in this, and the American people lose.

Rog, gas is already creeping up to $4 a gallon here in NYC, the highest its ever been, even just after Katrina. It's not even May yet, which usually adds about 50 cents a gallon to the price.

It's going to be a long hot summer, and I'm afraid this time there's not much the Saudis can or will do to bail Bush out.

  187. Officer lambastes generals' Iraq moves

A lauded lieutenant colonel writes of a crisis of leadership.

An active-duty Army officer is publishing a blistering attack on U.S. generals, saying they have botched the war in Iraq and misled Congress about the situation there.

"America's generals have repeated the mistakes of Vietnam in Iraq," charges Lt. Col. Paul Yingling, an Iraq veteran who is deputy commander of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. "The intellectual and moral failures ... constitute a crisis in American generals."

Yingling's comments are striking because his unit's performance in securing the northwestern Iraqi city of Tal Afar was cited by President Bush in a March 2006 speech and provided the model for the new security plan under way in Baghdad.

He also holds a high profile for a lieutenant colonel, having attended the Army's elite School for Advanced Military Studies and written for one of the Army's top professional journals, Military Review.

The article signals the public emergence of a split inside the military between younger, mid career officers and the top brass.

Many majors and lieutenant colonels have privately expressed anger and frustration with the performance of top commanders in the war. But until now, accusations of incompetent leadership have not been made as publicly.

"For reasons that are not yet clear, America's general officer corps underestimated the strength of the enemy, overestimated the capabilities of the Iraqi government and security forces and failed to provide Congress with an accurate assessment of security conditions in Iraq," Yingling writes.

Yingling said he had made his superiors aware of the article but had not sought permission to publish it. He intends to stay in the Army, he said. In two months, he is scheduled to take command of a battalion at Fort Hood, Texas.

Yingling calls for an overhaul of the way generals are picked and more involvement by Congress. He does not criticize officers by name; instead, he refers repeatedly to "America's generals."

Ltc Paul Yingling's full letter here.

He also does a very good job of Bitch slapping the idiot in Chief, but with the respect due the Office Not the idiot.
