Rep. Charles Rangel on our Show "Basham and Cornell Progressive Talk"

SATURDAY MORNING TUNE IN LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS and LOS ANGELES to our show BASHAM AND CORNELL PROGRESSIVE TALK
from 9 - 10 a.m. We broadcast live -- or go to our website and click on the link to hear the entire show in the archives.

TOMORROW, Saturday April 14:

Congressman Charles Rangel will be our guest April 14. He will discuss his 30-year Congressional career and his new book, "And I Haven't Had a Bad Day Since: From the Streets of Harlem to the Halls of Congress."

We're also having Eric Burns from Media Matters to discuss the Imus issue.

Recently our guest was Mark Green, one of the new owners of Air America, founder of New Democracy Project and author of "Losing Our Democracy." We've had some amazing guests the past 3 weeks: former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de la Vega, author of "U.S. vs BUSH" which is going to be a movie, a courtroom drama on the Bush Impeachment. We also had Media Matters' Paul Waldman, author of "Being Right is Not Enough". Last week we interview Media Matters' Eric Boehlert on his report "If it's Sunday it Must be Conservative." Boehlert is the author of LAPDOGS: "How the Press Rolled Over for Bush." A look inside one of the great journalistic collapses of our time.

Open thread. Let's talk about the 5 million emails missing from White House computers.

  2. Oh, hey, Lydia, when you have Rangel on the show, talking about Imus, no doubt, remind him how he called Bill Clinton a redneck after the Amadou Diallou case and ask if he sees this case differently because of that.

I'd call in, but I'm laying up supplies for the STORM OF THE CENTURRRYYYYYYYY that's supposed to hit us Sunday and Monday...and Tuesday...and Wednesday...and maybe even Thursday....

  4. Obviously Carl has never heard of Randi Rhodes, Al Franken, Michael Moore or Keith Olberman...

But of course "hate speech" aimed at conservatives isn't really "hate" is it?

The fact is Carl, you have just as many if not more "haters" on your side as we do. You simply don't see it because you agree with their point of view.

  5. Hi Lydia, Carl, et al..

Yeah, that's a ton of missing emails, eh? What a surprise! NOT!

Voltron, here's the difference. When the leftists you mention attack the minions of Bu$hCo, they are attacking their behavior, their hypocrisy, or their public policy. While all the above inspire anger, even outrage, in thinking people, angry speech is not hate speech.

  12. Tomcat, I could make the same argument for all of the mainstream conservatives.

If you ever listened to Rush long enough to get the complete context, you would see he does the very same thing.

And what part of the administrations policies or behavior would Ms. Rhodes be criticizing when she plays her little gunshot piece insinuating Bushes assassination?

  15. Hi Lydia, Everyone..

    Mike,

I read that Article of what Lee Iacocca said about our Leaders and I have to say that Lee Iacocca missed out on Charlie Sheens Comments in the Protest last month.

    Charlie Sheen said:
"THE U.S. GOVERNMENT NO LONGER REPRESENTS THE VIEWS AND NEEDS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE EITHER DOMESTICALLY OR INTERNATIONALLY!" - MARTIN SHEEN

I believe Iacocca and every American should take Sheen's comment very seriously of what is the Reality in Washington.

Many other prominent people are saying the very same thing as Sheen and I cannot stress enough how seriously compromised our Government is...

Someone should inform Iacocca because he doesn't seem to understand!

Just like many other people don't understand and mistakenly think we still live in the same Republic.

The Bush Admin is very close to dictatorship which is only 1 false flag away in which he will enact martial law and take full control.

  16. Carl,

There's ways to recover those e-mails..

You cannot erase them and Leahy calls it right!

quote: “They say they have not been preserved. I don't believe that!” Leahy shouted from the Senate floor as the dispute over the firing of federal prosecutors continued at a high pitch.

“You can't erase e-mails, not today. They've gone through too many servers,” said Leahy, D-Vt. “Those e-mails are there, they just don't want to produce them. We'll subpoena them if necessary.”

    - Leahy: I don't buy it!

    We don't buy it either...

  17. Hi GEF, CLIF, CARL, S-Q, MIKE VOLT, What happens if they won't deliver the emails? I don't want to sound naive, but what's the next step. Suppose they ignore or stonewall the subpoena? Is this possible?

    ReplyDelete
  18. TomCat, you hit the nail on the head. I always wonder why others accuse us of hate-speech, when we are simply shining a light on their use of hate-speech (Ann Coulter, Glen Beck, etc.) and chastising them for it, as we should. It's their corruption, their lies, their behavior which causes us to point it out.

Just telling the truth -- this is hate-speech, Volt?

Are we not supposed to acknowledge it at all? Pointing it out and denouncing it is not in itself, hate speech.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I mean Glen Beck indulges in vicious immature schoolyard bully taunts. He said he wanted to "kill Michael Moore with his bare hands."

He said he felt disgust and hatred for the Katrina victims and the 911 victims. He said Rosie had fat dripping out of her eyes. He told a Muslim Congressman that he needed proof the Congressman was not a terrorist.

    Talk about hate-speak!

  20. lydia,

Suffice to say that It's going to get real ugly in Washington pretty soon!

I keep saying that the GOP needs to Join the DEMs in Impeachment of Bush and Cheney in order to grab control of our Govt again.

The Pentagon and the Executive are out there increasing troops in full contention of Congress and they are brazenly telling us they are doing it....

We're in a Rogue Empire situation and I see no other recourse but Impeachment and probable indictments!

First thing we need to do after getting rid of Bush and Cheney is get rid of Patriot Act(Misnamed) and Restore the Habeus Corpus..

But then Mike can tell you all this verbatim..

Hmmm. Since you asked everybody but me, I'll answer.

    :D

Your question is NOT naive. It is exactly the question everyones asking.

I believe it will go to a Federal judge in DC who devides I believe whether to impanel a grand jury.

I could be wrong there so anyone please correct me if I am.

Either way I think they are screwed.

Server logs will show just how many messages are missing, and it looks like they're in some trouble.

If Rove deleted years worth of White House communications he's probably going to jail ultimately. Its called Obstruction, and its an pretty much open and shut deal in cases of tampering and evidence destruction, and failure to comply with federal documentation requirements.

I think its enough to open impeachment hearings to remove the cabinet.

Destroying records is a crime and can get you impeached.

  81. THE LOGAN ACT;

§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments.

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

    1 Stat. 613, January 30, 1799, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 953 (2004).

    BTW stupid READ the act before you spout off, a government official third in LINE of accession to the President is NOT Any citizen but a government official, and BTW try this also moron;

The Logan Act was intended to prohibit United States citizens without authority
from interfering in relations between the United States and foreign governments.

There appear to have been no prosecutions under the Act in its more than 200 year
    history.
However, there have been a number of judicial references to the Act, and it is not uncommon for it to be used as a point of challenge concerning dealings with foreign officials. Although attempts have been made to repeal the Act, it remains law and at least a potential sanction to be used against anyone who without authority interferes in the foreign relations of the United States.

    AND this should shut you up because it says your completely wrong as usual;

    Department of State References
A search of statements issued by the State Department concerning the Logan
Act from 1975 to the present has found two opinions in the DIGEST OF UNITED
STATES PRACTICE IN INTERNATIONAL LAW, continued, beginning in 1980, with a
column in the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL LAW. In these instances the
Department did not consider the activities in question to be inconsistent with the
Logan Act. One opinion concerned the questioning of certain activities of Senators
John Sparkman and George McGovern with respect to the government of Cuba. The
    Department stated:
The clear intent of this provision [Logan Act] is to prohibit unauthorized
persons from intervening in disputes between the United States and foreign
governments. Nothing in section 953, however, would appear to restrict
members of the Congress from engaging in discussions with foreign officials in
pursuance of their legislative duties under the Constitution.
    In the case of
Senators McGovern and Sparkman the executive branch, although it did not in
any way encourage the Senators to go to Cuba, was fully informed of the nature
and purpose of their visit, and had validated their passports for travel to that
    country.

  84. Clif,

If they go BEYOND their legislative duties they ARE breaking the law.

You MAY be correct on Pelosi legally, but being high profile she DID bring the media spotlight with her, and her clear intent was simply to embarrass the administration as Lantos has suggested in the Syrian press.

    ReplyDelete
  99. But do not make the mistake so many in TP have made, and assume I am "defending Imus".

    I am not.

    I am defending the TRUTH.

And the TRUTH is that the media, Al Sharpton, and most of the country, is LYING.

    There are 2 lies here.

    1. That Imus INTENDED to "insult" the girls.

    2. That Imus INTENDED the comment to be a "racial slur".

The second lie RELIES on the first.

IF Imus was insulting the team members, then ok, its easy to take the nappyheaded comment and attribute it to racism (although is doesn't address the fact the team was racially DIVERSE).

But IF, Imus did NOT mean to insult the girls, then the racist intent loses all cohesion.

Which is why the media pushed the FIRST lie. So everyone would by the second.

But I have demonstrated clearly and unquestionably that Imus was NOT intending to insult the girls, but to instead compliment their physical prowess. Therefore he could not have also at the same time held the hurtful racist intent everyone is ascribing to him.

Instead its clear he was trying to sound tough and street, and it came out poorly.

So once you conclude that he did NOT intend to insult them, and therefore did NOT intend any hurtful racial smears, you are left with a white guy, trying to pay a compliment to a team of female ball players and using the wrong words to do it.

In other words, he had a brain fart.

So he apologizes. And he did. The very next day.

And what do big girls do when someone has a brainfart, makes a mistake and then humbly and publically apologizes?

Big girls ACCEPT the apology and move on.

    Small girls do not.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I am not defending Imus.

I am CONDEMNING this racist witchhunt.

    ReplyDelete
  101. And all you need to do to understand this mess is LISTEN to the video, and then ask yourself, ONE question.

    That simple question is this.

If Don Imus was trying to insult the Rutgers team, then why did he say this?

“I didn’t know if I’d have wanted to beat Rutgers or not…. but they did.”

Just ask and answer that one simple question.

What would YOU mean if you said that?

Have you ever called someone a "tough sonofabitch"?

Are you telling that person their mother is a female dog in heat?

Or are you praising that persons toughness?

Once you can answer these questions, you’ll understand LIE NUMBER 1.

LIE NUMBER 1 is the one the media sold you first.

Now you can understand why LIE NUMBER 2 does not work.

It needs LIE NUMBER 1 to exist.

    ReplyDelete
  102. And LIE NUMBER 2 was that Imus had racist intent when he said those words.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Valerie Bertinelli was on Larry king and he asked her about Imus.

She said if the are going to destroy Imus, why don't they go after Limbaugh, Coulter and O'Reilly.

She is the first one on TV I have heard saying go after Limbaugh and Coulter.

    ReplyDelete
  104. If you listen to Bill Maher, you'll see he is adopting a similar position as mine.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm not defending Imus either, in reality I don't care for him much.

But my concern is more free market.

IF he is to be fired let it be because of declining listenership or advertising revenue or the OVERT flaunting of a company policy.

As long as his audience wants him, and advertisers are willing to pay, and he hasn't done anything that puts the company he works for in bad light DIRECTLY (his opinions being strictly his own) , then he needs to stay.

    ReplyDelete
  106. And I'd say the same thing about any liberal media personality.

    ReplyDelete
  107. One good that MAY come of this though, is that there are some rumblings now about the lyrics that permeate the recording industry.

    ReplyDelete
  108. With regards to his firing we're on similar pages, although not identical.

I think IF they fired him the day after he said this then ok. Its business. Radio stations fire DJ's all the time.

But to fire him in response to the level of outcry from activists was weak.

His intent wasn't a slur, so it shouldn't be taken as one.

He who takes offense where no offense is given, then he gives offense.

    ReplyDelete
  109. That may be hypocritical of me though, since obviously SOMEBODY buys that crap.

    ReplyDelete

Well as much as I hate rap, I shy from censoring it.

But some basic decency standards are acceptable.

Right now though the only thing coming from this is bad.

Lost of inflamation of racial tensions, and now the Rutgers girls everyone is so concerned about, are getting hate mail from Ius friends!

Its escalating. At least it was.

Thank God the girls came out tonight and finally accepted Imus's apology.

    I am glad.

They should have done that a week ago when he first made it.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Of course my argument with the recording industry is more about the coarsening of the culture and not political ideology.

I don't necessarily want them censored either, but a little SELF censorship would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Agreed on the girls.

    ReplyDelete
  113. We're on the same page with the self censorship stuff too.

    ReplyDelete
  114. And Larry, I think one of the first things I saw was where CNN's first knee jerk reaction was to compare Imus firing with Limbaugh, complete with a big photo of Rush onscreen.

(caught that on another blog a few days ago, I don't actually watch CNN...lol)

    ReplyDelete
  115. Now if we could just get you to see that it does not make you good to remain loyal to bad men.

Bush and his band are not good Americans, they are "greedy" Americans, but not good Americans.

You see this I think, but its hard to admit, probably mostly to yourself. I've been duped before, and I know its hard to swallow.

    But Bush is a trainwreck.

C'mon, man. A "little" corruption? And in case you hadn't noticed, Chimpy is transferring as much Treasury as he can to his cronies via no-bid contracts. We're getting little or nothing in return. The deck is also stacked in favor of those cronies-it is impossible for the "little guy" to break into most things these days because he/she doesn't have the resources to fight the constant lawsuits and price slashing powers of Wally and the other conglomerates. I hate to burst your bubble, but crony "capitalism" IS a form of socialism-socialism for the rich.

"Rugged individual?" Your hero has had someone else wiping his ass his whole life, through failure after failure. HE's about as far from a self-sufficient individual as anyone I've ever seen. He's Paris Hilton without the nose job.

Market, bridge bombings kill dozens in Iraq

Bombings in Baghdad and Karbala killed at least 56 people and wounded 78 more Saturday morning, police and medical officials said.

A car bomb blast in a crowded shopping area of central Karbala, a holy Shiite city about 70 miles southwest of Baghdad, killed at least 43 people and wounded 55, according to an official at Hussein Hospital in Karbala.

The explosion was near a bus station and just 200 yards from the Imam Hussein Holy shrine.

Video of the scene broadcast on Iraqi television showed hundreds of people crowded around the bomb site as emergency workers placed victims in ambulances.

A short time later, a car bomb exploded on the Jadriya bridge, which spans the Tigris River in southern Baghdad, killing at least 10 people and wounding 15 others, Iraqi police said. It was not immediately clear how badly the bridge was damaged.

The Jadriya bridge attack came just two days after a suicide car bomb detonated on the Sarafiya bridge, which crosses the Tigris in northern Baghdad, also killing 10 people. Two large sections of the bridge collapsed into the river.

There are 11 major bridges spanning the Tigris River in Baghdad.

    Nine to go.........

  133. And as if they didn't have enuf problems in Iraq already;

    Another War in Iraq?

The Bush administration finds itself in a difficult position as tensions between two regional allies threaten to escalate to war. The Turkish military is fed up with Kurdish rebels it says have safe harbor in northern Iraq, and now wants to mount an assault across the border. One of Iraq’s Kurdish leaders has said such an attack would trigger retaliation.

Damn they attacked Afghanistan, Iraq, threaten Iran and now a NATO ally is threatening to destabilize the Kurdish region, which is the only semi-stable region in Iraq, and the US has to stand by it's NATO partner because of the NATO treaty.

Interesting, Does Bush support the Kurds, he NEEDS to attack Iran, or does he honor the NATO treaty, and back Turkey?

No wonder he wants a "war Czar" about now.

The Bush strategy is very clear on the emails, as it is on the AG scandal: run out the clock, then claim the papers are historical documents and should not be given over to the government.

I do however listen to Rush, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham and have never heard any one of those advocating for someones death. (or serious harm even)

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Beating and killing Iraqi detainees, according to Limbaugh, is good fun. "I'm talking about people having a good time, these people [CIA agents and MPs at Abu Ghraib], you ever heard of emotional release? You heard of need to blow some steam off?" Limbaugh asked a caller. "This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time."

He sure is a pro-death advocate there, Nappy Headed HoHo!

And I notice how selectively you chose your list. Perhaps the only TWO commentators who have never asked that someone be killed or hurt, but that does NOT mean that they are not hate-filled spite-ridden bile-juiced right wing morons.

    Like you, NappyHeaded HoHo!

And, oh! By the way, I'm not seeing where she's my girl Randi is advocating the assassination of Bush in this clip...

Now, who is the "spoiled little child"?

Are you telling us you believe Bush is a spoiled little child, NappyHeadedHoHo?

What's the matter Widdle Twucker? Starting to see the liberal point of view?

  140. Whoops! Hannity did have a pro-death bend. Turns out, he had it weekly, too!

HANNITY: And finally, tonight, the "Enemy of the State." This week, actor, activist, and all-around very angry man Sean Penn takes the honors. Now, besides calling little old me a "whore" at a recent speech, Penn has called for the impeachment of just about everybody in the Bush administration and called them "bastards." Now, Penn can say whatever he wants. And we invite him on this program to sit in the hot seat and defend his outlandish comments. But the real question is: Who does this guy speak for? Who does he represent, other than other bad actors? So, Sean Penn, you are this week's "Enemy of the State."

"Enemey of the state" was the phrase Roman Caesars used to justify executing their political enemies.

    Oh? Hannity didn't know that?

Hannity doesn't know a lot, Widdle Twucker. Neither do you!

    ReplyDelete
  141. Oh, and I *knew* I could dig up one on Laura Ingraham, where she wants David Gregory to risk his life....

INGRAHAM: David -- David, to do a show from Iraq means to talk to the Iraqi military. To go out with they Iraqi military to actually have a conversation with the people, instead of reporting from hotel balconies about the latest IEDs going off. It is very difficult in Iraq.

    Why?

She didn't do that. Her visit to Iraq was embedded with troops that were miles from any conflicted areas!

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Your skin's getting a widdle thin, there, Widdle Twucker. My advice to you is to take a week off from blogging.

Go do whatever it is you do to relax...crystal meth, is it? I can never remember the drug of choice of racist rednecks....
