JOHN EDWARDS vs. NEWT GINGRICH: WHO HAS FAMILY VALUES?

SATURDAY MORNING TUNE IN LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS and LOS ANGELES to our show BASHAM AND CORNELL PROGRESSIVE TALK
from 9 - 10 a.m. We broadcast live -- or go to our website and click on the link to hear the entire show in the archives.

Upcoming: Congressman Charles Rangel will be our guest April 14. He will discuss his 30-year Congressional career and his new book, "And I Haven't Had a Bad Day Since: From the Streets of Harlem to the Halls of Congress." Recently our guest was Mark Green, one of the new owners of Air America, founder of New Democracy Project and author of "Losing Our Democracy." We've had some amazing guests the past 3 weeks: former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de la Vega, author of "U.S. vs BUSH" which is going to be a movie, a courtroom drama on the Bush Impeachment. We also had Media Matters' Paul Waldman, author of "Being Right is Not Enough".

JOHN EDWARDS vs. NEWT GINGRICH
Interesting, isn’t it, that Newt Gingrich didn’t stand by his wife Jackie on her deathbead when she was dying of cancer, but instead left her for another woman, yet he claims to be the party of “traditional family values!” John Edwards not only stands by his wife as she admits her cancer is incurable — as any moral person would — but unlike Gingrich, Edwards never cheated on his wife, and has never switched wives. John and Elizabeth Edwards have been married to her for 30 years and now.

CHEERS and Blessings to John and Elizabeth Edwards. The courage it takes to be optimistic in the face of Mrs. Edwards' returning cancer is exactly what this country needs. I believe John Edwards will be our next president. Though I love Obama and admire Hilary, I think Edwards stands the best chance of actually winning America's vote and heart. He is an incredible human being.

Thanks SEAN POMPANO (the Flavor Spray Diet) and JOE GANNASCOLI (Sopranos) for inviting me on your show! I just did the greatest New York radio show, "Chewin The Fat" on FM 98.5 WBZB, Business Talk New York® with Joe Gannascoli (Vito of The Sopranos) and Sean Pompano. These guys are hilarious and doing great things for people with their new show.

  1. I guess Newt’s family values is different than John Edwards, and I’m pretty sure Elizabeth Edwards is glad John is not a “proper conservative spouting their family values hypocricy” while dumping her for a younger model for the photo ops.

The real differences between the mindset of liberals and the neo-con self centered republican establishment is illustrated very well here ………

Newt dumped his wife once for better became for worse,

John Edwards included Elizabeth in all his thoughts, and even considered giving up his hopes for her health and care. However like the real caring person she is, she is willing to carry the burden of fighting cancer at the same time she tries to help elect John Edwards. She does this because she knows America is going to need a real leader from the next election. We do not need another foole, who relies on hackneyed marketing strategies and photo op images with sound bite spin, to correct the ship of state and begin the efforts to forstall it’s shinking from the destruction of 26 years of republican mismanagement.

Elizabeth Edwards is willing to help John or any democrat get elected so they can begin the efforts to remove the cancerous growth that the “conservative” movement has foisted upon this country. A growth which has lead to it’s fiscal bankruptcy with major budget imbalances, destruction of the readiness and fabric of our military and the undermining of the American middle class for the enrichment of a shrinking segment of this country.

  7. Although I'm not on the Edwards bandwagon I must say, whenever I have seen the Edwards together they always really seem to be in love.

My only gripe about Sen. Edwards is the way he jumped on Gov. Dean along with the Irreverant Al Sharpton during a "Debate" for the 2004 election. Months after Gov. Dean said, I want the votes of people who have Confederate Flag stickers on their pickup trucks,"(paraphrase)in front of a what was largely a Black Audience, Al Sharpton used that remark in the debate to color Gov. Dean as empowering racists. Never mind that the audience applauded him wildly when he originally said it. Sen. Edwards joined in on the Irreverent Sharpton's attack. Seemed to me a character flaw. But hey we all have them. I did, in the end, campaign and vote for the Kerry/Edwards ticket. 1st time I compromised my vote btw.

On Rep. Rangell. He has done so much for the Progressive Cause and I hope you have a great interview with him. My only gripe with him is that he refuses to look into what really happened on 9/1/1.
If I may be so forward to suggest that you or Doug ask him about that?

I'd also like to hear him asked about Impeachment.

In reference to last Monday's post
" BLESS OUR TROOPS * IS JOHN HAGEE THE MOST DANGEROUS PASTOR IN AMERICA?" -
Coincidently I included the Irreverant Hagee on a post the following day. It includes a link to a Documentary film titled "The Doomsday Code".

If anybody is in doubt about the answer to "IS JOHN HAGEE THE MOST DANGEROUS PASTOR IN AMERICA?"
"The Doomday Code" will show just how Dangerous.

Hearing forward to listening in on the interview with Rep. Rangell.

    Peace.

  8. I didnt see Edwards interview so I am not in a position to judge how sincere or insincere he is.

Edwards seems sincere and intelligent when I have seen him, and he seems like a good person............But I am with Worf and Clif on this, we need a President who does not choose the easy way out and who examines the facts and analyizes the situation rather than taking people at their word.....particularly those that lack credibility or have an agenda. To me voting for the war or to legalize Bushs illegal unconstitutional power grabs shows a lack of courage, inability to comprehend the big picture and a fear of making the tough decisions or confronting and dealing with challenges as well as intellectual laziness and those arent qualities I would choose in a President when there are better candidates like Gore out there.

Edwards and Feingold have said and done many things i support and like......like Edwards supporting the Middle class or health care reform, and Feingold being the first and at that time only person wanting to impeach Bush..........But for me saying we should just make Bush's illegal warrantless spying on Americans program legal or Edwards voting for the War are pretty close to Deal breakers for me when considering them for President......Although if it came down to then vs a repug they would get my vote.

I would support Edwards or Obama for VP or a Cabinet position but feel they need seasoning and experience for President.

I hope I didnt sound to scathing because honestly I like Edwards I also would like to see Edwards, Obama or Richardson as Al Gores VP!

  9. Mike a Gore- Richardson Ticket would be unbeatable, especially sine Richardson would play well in the south west states and Texas, bringing quite a few new Hispanic voters to thew polls, which could help congressional state and local elections into democratic victories, and further eroding the rights power here.

  12. Clif could you imagine the alternative energy and environmental platform those twwo could come up with,,,,,,,,,,,,Richardson was a Former Energy Secretary and Gore is an expert on global warming.........they would be unbeatable......particularly when the repugs who are in bed with big oil wouldnt be able to counter any of their propositions or arguments with anything remotely resembling facts or coherent arguments.

  13. Mike look at the electorate and the demographics of Gore(southern moderate democrat) and Richardson(Hispanic Western moderate democrat), which means the re-pubies have to defend the red states, and Rudy will not play well in the blue states (and some red states)with his real track record once it is revealed.

This election is Gores to lose if he really wants it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Gore-Richardson, is the most experienced ticket the democrats could put forward, former VP, US senator, with former Ambassador, Governor, Congressman, Cabinet official, against a US attorney who was a mayor?

Gore could run circles around Rudy on national and international policy.

Then drive home the theme, we tried an inexperienced local politician last time, and look where it got us....

Especially if Rudy tried a Newt or Other right wing nut like Imhoff, Brownback or Huckabee as his VP choice.

Rudy will always be a NY liberal RINO to many true conservatives.

Newt married a woman above him who could help him win an election.

  26. An interesting note on the Newtered one. When he was cheating on his wife with cancer, he was calling for the truth to come out about Clinton's BJ. Now, he announced a couple days ago that he doesn't think candidates' personal lives should be an issue in campaigns.

I really hope Newt gets nominated. That ought to be about the final nail in the Gopper coffin. They will go to being a regional party, and we'll be done with them in about 3/4 of America.

They are heading down the path that Strom took when he formed the "States' Rights" Party, and they are heading down that path for largely the same reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Y'know, there's a good reason why the Newster is insisting that candidates' private lives shouldn't be an issue in campaigns. Namely, the 2008 elections. With the exception--possibly--of La Hill, none of the Democratic frontrunners have a history of marital difficulties. On the other hand, you have:

Newt Gingrich. Need I say more?
Rudy Giuliani, who publicly humiliated his previous wife in an ugly divorce and is now estranged from his children.
John McCain, who has had no problem sucking to Bushco even aafter the Bush campaign ran ugly campaigns smearing his family.

Family values suddenly isn't such a good vote-getter, is it, guys?

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to People

test to get a welfare check, because I have to pass one to earn it For
    them?

Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on

I have been reading this blog off and on for the last year or so, and prior to that although I am Libertarian I would have considered myself more Conservative than Liberal, after the last year of scanning the blogs and watching what is going on around us it is clear the Republicans have betrayed Libertarian principles far far worse than the Democrats have.

Bush squanders and wastes our money on the Military industrial complex, unwinnable wars and tax cuts for the ultra wealthy all while spending money we dont have and creating ever bigger deficits that essentially mortgage our childrens future and compromise their standard of living .

There are Liberals as well as Conservatives on this blog I do not like or disagree with, however the fool calling himself anonymous or Rusty as others refer to him is not only a disgrace to his own party but a disgrace to humanity as a whole, this person exhibits no intellect whasoever, provides no insight and adds nothing of value, the person contadicts what it stated just months earlier and just attacks and insults others while adding nothing of value.

It is ignorant sleezy fools like this that are making myself and others turn their backs on Conservatism and move further to the left for fiscal and government responsibility.

I wish we actually had a viable 3rd party to choose from, preferably Libertarian that valued freedom and economic responsibility over money and power.

How about instead of running huge deficits to finance all the pork and wars, we invest in becomeing energy efficient or investing in technology and training to make us competitive and insure the next generation have the skills to compete for decent paying jobs.

Not only do I have a problem with my tax dollars being wasted on drug addicts sitting on their butt, but I also have a problem with this spendthrift government wasting my tax dollars spying on people's phone calls, monitoring blogs, paying bloggers and operatives to spread misinformation, losing billions of my tax dollars and spending my tax dollars in ways neither myself nor the overwhelming majority of Americans approve of.

We are supposed to have a government that represents the collective will of the people. It certainly hasnt appeared that wat the last 6 years.

It looks like our government represents a tiny insignificant minority of the population at the expense of the unspoken for majority.

    Jimmy,

The "welfare doper" is a rare quantity, mostly a red herring talking point designed to allow the "conservatives" to perform their sleight-of-hand theft of the public funds.

In addition, the "mandatory minimum" laws covering nickel and dime dope dealers (1) make this country an incarcerator of its citizens on a scale Stalin would be proud of, and (2) allows aformentioned 'con politicians the opportunity to hand out contracts for things like prison building.

As added bonuses, rapists and robbers will have to be turned out to make room for the dealers-people who enter the prison system stupid punks and leave it brutalized, angry, and violent. Anybody who thinks we're "safer" because of mandatory minimum sentencing really hasn't thought it out very far.

My "drugs" concern is slightly different from yours, and my idea isn't terribly popular, but it's clear that the "War on Drugs" is a costly and colossal failure. I believe it's time to revisit substance laws in this country and retool them to the treatment of addicts, rather than the incarceration of punk dealers.

  37. Poll: Americans Switching from Republican to Democratic Party Allegiance: Now 50 Percent Align with Dems, Only 35 Percent with GOP

Public allegiance to the Republican Party has plunged during George W. Bush's presidency, as attitudes have edged away from some of the conservative values that fueled GOP political victories, a major survey has found.

The survey, by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, found a "dramatic shift" in political party identification since 2002, when Republicans and Democrats were at rough parity. Now, 50% of those surveyed identified with or leaned toward Democrats, whereas 35% aligned with Republicans.

What's more, the survey found, public attitudes are drifting toward Democrats' values: Support for government aid to the disadvantaged has grown since the mid-1990s, skepticism about the use of military force has increased and support for traditional family values has decreased.

The findings suggest that the challenges for the GOP reach beyond the unpopularity of the war in Iraq and Bush.

"Iraq has played a large part; the pushback on the Republican Party has to do with Bush, but there are other things going on here that Republicans will have to contend with," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Center. "There is a difference in the landscape."

  69. Jolly Roger Excellent definition of Conservatism............the only thing I would add is that conservatives brains have not fully developed and they think one dimensionally and are not able to understand comprehend or formulate abstract thoughs or concepts.

a perfect example is global warming or the stock market crash.........one dimensional thinkers and dunces like Rusty think because it is cold out on this specific day or because the stock market has not crashed today that it is inconcievable that global warming exists or we will have a stock market crash.

Now a few months ago my 5 year old couisin asked how global warming could exist if it was cold today and with a little explaining he was able to conceptualize the difference between short term variability in the weather and long term climatic change that is quite quantifiable and measurable.

Interesting that many repugs brains are far less evolved and developed than a 5 year olds.

  83. That Dreaded Word

She had it all. A husband she adored, a daughter in college that she was so proud of and a life of happiness that many long for.

One January morning she went about her day of calls to her mother and daughter, shopping for groceries and the normal checkup she had been putting off.

The doctor asked the normal questions, performed the normal checkup, and then gave her what he termed routine tests.

After all this was done she went on with her day and her life. She never gave the doctors visit another thought.

The phone rang a few days after that and it was the doctors office wanting her to come back for a consultation.

The consultation with the doctor was one that would forever change her life and the lives of those she loved.

The doctor explained the test results had found one of the most dreaded words she would ever hear.

CANCER. Not just any cancer but Pancreatic Cancer. Those words brought tears to her eyes and chills down her spine.

After a few days of absorbing this news with her family, she made several difficult moves.

She told her husband to move on with his life without her, as she couldn't stand to see him go through this pain. This is something he cannot do.

She tried to let go of her daughter but that bond was impossible to break.

We all react differently to tragedy. Some like Elizabeth Edwards will choose to move forward with life and make a difference for others.

Others will push those closest to them away to protect them from the tragedy that lies ahead.

However they choose to react, that decision will forever alter the course of life, for those they are closest to.

Life cannot be predicted. One day you are happy and hopeful, the next day your world falls apart.

Both types of reaction require strength and courage for the cancer victim and their family.

This wife who was so in love with her life, her husband and her daughter, reacted the only way she knew how, to prepare them for life without her.

Which of us can really say what we would do if we heard that same fateful word, Cancer.

Can we really judge the wife of a Presidential candidate, or an everyday housewife on how they react?

WASHINGTON - President Bush is standing firmly behind his embattled attorney general despite Justice Department documents that show Alberto Gonzales was more involved in the decisions to fire U.S. attorneys than he previously indicated.

Gonzales said last week he was not involved in any discussions about the impending dismissals of federal prosecutors. On Friday night, however, the department disclosed Gonzales’ participation in a Nov. 27 meeting where such plans were discussed.

That e-mail only added to the calls for Gonzales’ ouster.
At the Nov. 27 meeting, the attorney general and at least five top department officials discussed a five-step plan for carrying out the firings, Gonzales’ aides said late Friday.

At that session, Gonzales signed off on the plan, drafted by his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson. Sampson resigned last week.

A Justice aide closely involved in the dismissals, White House liaison Monica Goodling, also has taken a leave of absence, two officials said.

The plan approved by Gonzales involved notifying Republican home-state senators of the impending dismissals, preparing for potential political upheaval, naming replacements and submitting them to the Senate for confirmation.

Six of the eight prosecutors who were ordered to resign are named in the plan.

“Clearly the attorney general was not telling the whole truth, but what is he trying to hide?” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, who is heading the Senate’s investigation into the firings, said, “If the facts bear out that Attorney General Gonzales knew much more about the plan than he has previously admitted, then he can no longer serve as attorney general.”

Added House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.: “This puts the attorney general front and center in these matters, contrary to information that had previously been provided to the public and Congress.”

Reading it will help people to understand why western ideals and values are non operative in Iraq. It also helps show why Bush's explanation of what the surge is supposed to produce is shallow and only a cover up for his real desire to have the "Iraqi Oil Law" enacted.

It also hints to an underlying truth, which ther neo-cons have totally ignored, the Wahabbists will never allow the US or Great Britain to dominate in Iraq any more than they allow the US to dominate in Saudi Arabia. As long as Bush and the PNAC neo-cons ignore this truth, they will continue to fail, no matter how many new plans, surges or musical chair generals they try in Iraq.

They ignore the real reason the Sunni insurgents are fighting.

The American public elected the New congress because they wanted oversite and accountability and wanted this type of power grabbing arrogance to be stopped. It appears Congress is letting the repugs dictate and frame the issues and are too afraid of looking partisan and vindictive for the 2008 election when they come across as spineless instead…………..Would it be so difficult to issue a statement clarifying Congresses role to the American public and putting these liars in their place.

Lets try to extrapolate and follow this flawed possibly drug addled logic a little……..so by Rush’s logic…………it would be ok for a repug to Molest children if a Democrat did it first……….Oh yeah the repugs allready used that oner for Mark Foley so I guess Rush’s so called logic is quite predictable………lets try again, if Hitler murdered and exterminated whole groups of people first then it wouldnt really be that bad if Bush and repugs did it also it could be like kind of a test to see if liberals give Bush and the repugs credit for it and try to smear them for genocide………that is if the liberals arent the ones being killed like Coulter wants.

    3) Alberto Gonzalez, should be gone, and all the people involved in the Attorney scandal should be forced to testify under oath……..this was CLEARLY a power grab geared to insure perpetual rule by obstructing justice and stifling investigations into repug corruption and to install blindly loyal cronnies, as well as instilling fear into prosecutors not to enforce unbiased justice but rather to be partisan tools of the Executive and thus short circuiting the checks and balances.

  153. "Obama the 'Magic Negro'
The Illinois senator lends himself to white America's idealized, less-than-real black man.

    By David Ehrenstein,

L.A.-based DAVID EHRENSTEIN writes about Hollywood and politics.

    March 19, 2007

AS EVERY CARBON-BASED life form on this planet surely knows, Barack Obama, the junior Democratic senator from Illinois, is running for president. Since making his announcement, there has been no end of commentary about him in all quarters — musing over his charisma and the prospect he offers of being the first African American to be elected to the White House.

But it's clear that Obama also is running for an equally important unelected office, in the province of the popular imagination — the "Magic Negro."

The Magic Negro is a figure of postmodern folk culture, coined by snarky 20th century sociologists, to explain a cultural figure who emerged in the wake of Brown vs. Board of Education. "He has no past, he simply appears one day to help the white protagonist," reads the description on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Negro .

He's there to assuage white "guilt" (i.e., the minimal discomfort they feel) over the role of slavery and racial segregation in American history, while replacing stereotypes of a dangerous, highly sexualized black man with a benign figure for whom interracial sexual congress holds no interest.

As might be expected, this figure is chiefly cinematic — embodied by such noted performers as Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Scatman Crothers, Michael Clarke Duncan, Will Smith and, most recently, Don Cheadle. And that's not to mention a certain basketball player whose very nickname is "Magic."

Poitier really poured on the "magic" in "Lilies of the Field" (for which he won a best actor Oscar) and "To Sir, With Love" (which, along with "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," made him a No. 1 box-office attraction). In these films, Poitier triumphs through yeoman service to his white benefactors. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is particularly striking in this regard, as it posits miscegenation without evoking sex. (Talk about magic!)

The same can't quite be said of Freeman in "Driving Miss Daisy," "Seven" and the seemingly endless series of films in which he plays ersatz paterfamilias to a white woman bedeviled by a serial killer. But at least he survives, unlike Crothers in "The Shining," in which psychic premonitions inspire him to rescue a white family he barely knows and get killed for his trouble. This heart-tug trope is parodied in Gus Van Sant's "Elephant." The film's sole black student at a Columbine-like high school arrives in the midst of a slaughter, helps a girl escape and is immediately gunned down. See what helping the white man gets you?

And what does the white man get out of the bargain? That's a question asked by John Guare in "Six Degrees of Separation," his brilliant retelling of the true saga of David Hampton — a young, personable gay con man who in the 1980s passed himself off as the son of none other than the real Sidney Poitier. Though he started small, using the ruse to get into Studio 54, Hampton discovered that countless gullible, well-heeled New Yorkers, vulnerable to the Magic Negro myth, were only too eager to believe in his baroque fantasy. (One of the few who wasn't fooled was Andy Warhol, who was astonished his underlings believed Hampton's whoppers. Clearly Warhol had no need for the accouterment of interracial "goodwill.")

But the same can't be said of most white Americans, whose desire for a noble, healing Negro hasn't faded. That's where Obama comes in: as Poitier's "real" fake son.

The senator's famously stem-winding stump speeches have been drawing huge crowds to hear him talk of uniting rather than dividing. A praiseworthy goal. Consequently, even the mild criticisms thrown his way have been waved away, "magically." He used to smoke, but now he doesn't; he racked up a bunch of delinquent parking tickets, but he paid them all back with an apology. And hey, is looking good in a bathing suit a bad thing?

The only mud that momentarily stuck was criticism (white and black alike) concerning Obama's alleged "inauthenticty," as compared to such sterling examples of "genuine" blackness as Al Sharpton and Snoop Dogg. Speaking as an African American whose last name has led to his racial "credentials" being challenged — often several times a day — I know how pesky this sort of thing can be.

Obama's fame right now has little to do with his political record or what he's written in his two (count 'em) books, or even what he's actually said in those stem-winders. It's the way he's said it that counts the most. It's his manner, which, as presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Biden ham-fistedly reminded us, is "articulate." His tone is always genial, his voice warm and unthreatening, and he hasn't called his opponents names (despite being baited by the media).

Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes. If he were real, white America couldn't project all its fantasies of curative black benevolence on him."

RUSH: Well, let me tell you about the roots of this. There was a columnist in the Los Angeles Times named David Ehrenstein, and on Monday, he wrote a piece about Barack is the "magic negro." He claimed that there is, in the black culture, this term "magic negro." His point in this column was that Barack Obama is not authentic. He hasn't been down for the struggle. Plus he's not been around long enough for people to know what he actually stands for substance-wise, and so white people who are supporting Barack are simply doing so to assuage their white guilt over the transgressions in the past in this country, such as slavery and so forth. So his theory is that Barack coming along, he's black and that's all that matters. Nobody cares what he stands for. Nobody knows what he stands for.

It was a column, essentially, accusing white people supporting Obama of being racist because they don't care what he stands for and don't care what he's going to do. The fact that he's black is enough for them, to make them not feel guilty as long as they say they support him, and that was the definition of "magic negro." Now, on this program, we made it a big point to point out that it was -- and this columnist is black, by the way, David Ehrenstein is black, and he used the term, which is why it says so in the lyric line of the song. So we're just highlighting what the left says. I believe they're the true racists. I believe they're the ones that look at people and notice whatever is different about them from white liberals. Either they're black or they're gay or they're Hispanic or whatever. They immediately group people, and most of them happen to be victims. Yet we conservatives are the ones, Uriah, who get tarred and feathered with these allegations.

No Mikey, it wouldn't be OK.

  161. No Volt Wrong is wrong, sure its wrong some idiot journalist said that but to gleefully smear someone t7 times, make up a song and then hide behind the BS claim that it is only to test liberals is riddiculous.

What if a a liberal made up a smear for our soldiers said it gleefully 27 times and made up a mocking song to mock these people then said that some other repug fool actually said it first and it was all really a test to see if conservatives would give him credit for the term and attack him..........its an assinine racist position to take and a cowarldly slimy excuse.
