THE MYSTERY OF INNOCENCE

Other titles for this post: ~ HOW TO BE A VIRGIN AGAIN

"Great men are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force; that thoughts rule the world." – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I really want to be a virgin again in more ways than one. In this age, we’ve seen too much, done too much, been too naked. Mortal life is getting too extreme. There’s too much hard-core violence and porn in the airwaves. But is it possible to become innocent again? Can we put the Genie back in the bottle?

There is nothing in the physical world left to want, do or imagine. I don’t want one more luxury gadget to make my life easier except maybe the newest iphone or a flying car. Okay, and maybe a Jet-pack like the Jetsons had. Actually nothing in the material world impresses me anymore. Except seeing, actually seeing The Force, which some call "God" but which I often call Love. Imagine if love were a tangible force. What would it look like?

I was thinking about the tragedy and the terrorist bombings ~  Brussels, Paris, Boston, San Bernardino, 9/11, Oklahoma bombings, as well as Hurricanes, wildfires and mass shootings.. and the Indonesian tsunami – and of how many bodies have rotted and evaporated, and how quickly human life is snuffed out. It proves to me what I’ve always known: that flesh is not man's most important quality. This mortal life is but a dream, and man is not made of matter, no matter how real the illusion seems. Our lives are a reflection of our thoughts.

As a culture we put so much emphasis on the body: on the cellular substance of a fetus, the death and burial of a corpse, the saving of an unconscious sack of flesh that contains no life force or spirit, as in the case of Terry Schiavo, who was brain dead, but not allowed to be taken off life support. This case became a political circus. We are focused so exclusively on the letter, not the spirit; the style, not the substance; the right hat, not the heart; the ritual, not the meaning... and the flesh, which can be wiped out so easily — that it must make me wonder: is flesh man’s most important quality?

At the risk of sounding like a crackpot, I have to say here that I no longer believe in the physical universe as being primary. The invisible harmony is what's real. In other words, the things I know are valuable and real are the things I can’t see with my eyes – the invisible qualities of love, truth, wisdom, soul, principle, thought, harmony, wisdom, compassion, beauty, strength and character – things that cannot be physically touched or scientifically proven. Man is spiritual; we are linked to the Divine and to each other by the invisible fabric of love.

As Emerson said: "this is a spiritual universe and thoughts rule the world."

Imagine if the human pageant were just a tapestry — and God sees the complete, beautiful picture on the finished side — but from our vantage point beneath, we only see dangling threads that keep disappearing as they are woven in and out. As people pass on, certain threads disappear because they are part of a grand stitch that completes a beautiful landscape or picture on the other side. We can’t see the whole picture. We don't know the reason for death and suffering; we don't know what's on the other side, but I'm sure there are many mansions and colors -- and the weave creates a majestic tapestry.

One of my favorite books is MANS SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl, who overcame concentration camp torture through the power of his mind. This is a universe of thought. Thought is energy and it is swift.

Here's the Catch 22: what you think about all day long, is what you become; what you focus on grows. So if you're thinking about how bad the world is, or how much you lack, you will get more of the same. Or as I wrote in the comedy film "Venus Conspiracy", "You can be attractive even if you're not good looking, because if you radiate love, you attract people." I know it's a silly line, but it is true. Beyond "The Secret" the best metaphysical writers who really know the truth are Eckhart Tolle, Mary Baker Eddy, Emmet Fox, Depak Chopra, Neal Donald Walsch.. actually there are many.

Whatsoever things are good, pure, beautiful — if we think on these things we will bring these into our life in proportion to our thoughts. Our thoughts create our reality, and as Shakespeare said, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."

I have the profound sense that we are doing the right thing everyday when we are loving to others, especially those who offend us and disturb us, and especially those less fortunate. Have you seen someone's face light up with just one kind word?

My sister went through open-heart surgery to replace a valve a few months after our brother’s death. Through the past few years, with the help of a pacemaker, she has gradually improved her heartbeat as she has became more spiritually attuned.

In December she started writing songs again. She wrote a song that was so beautiful, it had to come from the Source of love; it was pure inspiration. Her heart suddenly went into "sinus" or normal rhythm. The connection was clear.

When the troubles with her downstairs neighbor began to escalate, my sister developed debilitating pain in her feet, a form of arthritis. She could hardly walk. She was told not to hike anymore with her dog.

I believe her feet hurt because she was walking on eggshells. She was angry and hurt and unable to live freely in her own apartment because the downstairs neighbor kept harrrassing her about the noise upstairs with her dog.

The neighbor also harassed her because she was gay. This woman seemed completely malicious at times. What was more astounding was that she actually received mail from Trinity Broadcasting Network, the Christian evangelical station! We saw it in the mailbox. My sister tried to talk to her, but she refused. My sister tried to move, but couldn't find an apartment that took dogs and would double as a music studio.

She had to to work on this spiritually – seeing her neighbor through God’s eyes, as a child of love. She had to send love to her neighbor. This took a while, but she continued to return love for hate. Everytime the woman would rave and rant, or pound on the ceiling with a broom when my sister played music she was composing (in the daytime!) my sister would refrain from screaming back.

The situation turned around. My sister persisted in seeing the woman as a good person, and the woman became willing to talk. Now they actually wave to each other. This is nothing short of a miracle considering my sister was actually in fear of a hate crime at one point. She also thought her dog was going to be poisoned.

The Death of Adrienne Shelly: Neighbor vs. Neighbor

A few years ago, I was reading the list of Sundance films purchased for sale and was shocked to see that Adrienne Shelly, one of my favorite indie actress-turned-filmmakers, who directed "Waitress" had been murdered. She was murdered by a downstairs neighbor for complaining constantly about the noise he made. He finally marched upstairs and killed her. This was devastating, surreal.

I then thought of my sister and was grateful she had learned the spiritual lesson of getting along with her neighbor.

How to Solve Every Problem in Life ~ the Problem of Living in a Material World

So what is the code? Is there a formula one can plug in here for all problems in life? Yes.

What I've discovered is that the solution to any material problem is never at the level of the problem. As Einstein said: "No problem can be solved at the same level it was created on." You have to go to higher, smarter solution. You have to go to a diplomatic or spiritual solution. Problems are solved in the "gap" -- the space between. It always happens when you let go, or look away from the problem or get momentarily distracted. That's when you find your earring, or get the phone call. It's by “letting go."

No human power could relieve my alcoholism. It was not healed by dissecting the brain.

No military power can solve terrorism. We can’t fight fire with fire; we need to go above the problem and approach it from a different angle.

This hot-bead of hatred is something we actually started when we dropped bombs on Fallujah and invaded Iraq.  We fomented this hatred agains America years earlier when we got into bed with the Saudis and their oil oligarchy.

But hating ones' enemies never resolves anything, as the Great Peacemaker said.

All great spiritual leaders know that you must "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." And "a soft answer turns away wrath." Withdraw our energy from the situation and the situation will solve itself. We must withdraw and take care of our own side of the street.

PROJECTION: LIVING IN THE WRECK OF OUR FUTURE ~ LETTING GO ~ MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING

On the Subject of Bigotry, Racism and Homophobia:

The more one pushes something down, the more it rears its ugly head in inappropriate places; perversions appear. This explains why celibacy in priests acts like a pressure cooker, often resulting in crimes of molestation. Celibacy is unnatural; too much pent up desire perverts itself. Like Pandora’s box, whatever is taboo becomes irresistibly tempting. People will sneak out of their cages to experience the forbidden.

So the Puritan, guilt-ridden over his own uncontrollable urges, cannot live with himself. Unable to cut out his own lustful thoughts, he looks outside himself for someone to blame and project his guilt onto. The easiest way to ameliorate his shame is to broadcast the evil, project it onto others where he can externalize it, see it as separate from himself – and lash at it with swords. This way he can feel morally superior. It's a quick fix. He investigates it, dwells on its dark side, inflates its evil effects until evil is all he sees. He makes the gay person into an object of disgust.

The only mystery left is innocence.

Excellent article Lydia, there are several parts I plan to comment on throughout the day.

But first you are absolutely right how short and how precious life can be, also the vast majority of both spiritual people and religions from prehistoric times to the present have had a belief that our physical bodies are distinct and seperate from our spiritual sides or souls, although in life our spiritual self resides in our physical body, The Ancient Egyptians believed this, they also believed that after death the two seperate with the physical death occuring first, with the spiritual energy moving on to another plane of existence in most cases.

Like Worf says I dont pretend to have the answers, but this certainly seems a plausible scenario.

Both statements make sense, I have read numerous times that sickness or near death experiences can make us more spiritually attuned, and just before my motorcycle accident last summer I did experience an amazing spiritual phenomena that I feel was possibly god watching over me, instead of feeling it was a day of evil misfortune where I almost died, I prefer to see it as amazingly fortunate, Life is so precious and my life could have either been snuffed out right there or I could have been paralized or crippled for life, fortunately neither was the case.

Also about your sister's feet hurting, I have read in several articles that stress and various negative emotions are tied to various ailments and specific localizations of pain, I remember reading that financial worries are correlated with lower back pain and from times in my life when I have had financial difficulties I have on occassion noticed this correlation, i'll see if i can find what type of stress correlates to pain in the feet if I can.

I agree Larry, BTW excellent article on Kay's blog about Gates, it summarizes my feelings completely, I ininitially tried to give Gates the benefit of the doubt, but after his Nazi talk of calling those that oppose Bush's nonplan "EMBOLDENER"S og the enemy and his support of the surge he lost me for good, he;s just another repug shill trying to buy time for Bush and smear the democrats.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I was watching Meet The Press and the other various Sunday morning shows and after listening to the usual repug rhetoric like anyone who opposes Bush's plan should have a plan of their own, when the utter ridiculousness of this statement hit me.

How is merely throwing more troops into the meat grinder of an Iraqi civil war any more a plan than withdrawing troops, its not, its a tactic is all it is it has no long term plan, no strategy and no reasoned correlation to the desired outcome its just more of the same, it fails to outline how that specific amount of additional troops will help address the unrest and civil war, fails to give a timeframe for success or failure, and fails to give a coherent plan for what should happen if conditions worsen or if the Irai's will view this as a hostile occupation and ramp up the violence.

As usual there appears to be no plan just more of the same death and rhetoric, and instead of the Administration articulating a plan they merely smear there opponents as "emboldening" the enemy, when I think they lack the intelligence to even know who the enemy is, is it the Sunni's, the Shite's etc.......or is it just the unseen islamofascists Bush claims are always maniacally plotting to kill us 24/7?????????

    ReplyDelete
  10. Again to summarize the next time one of the repugs say we need a plan in order to oppose Bush;s plan to send more troops, I'd like to hear one of the talking heads say:

Sending more troops is no more a "plan" that withdrawing troops, surely you can do better than that or Karl Rove's Nazi talk that we are "EMBOLDENING" the "enemy" by opposing Bush's plan. He may as well grow a set and just come out and say he opposes freedom of speech and feels it is treason to publicly disagree with the Dictator in Chief!

  11. The army alone has 50 investigations of fraud over all the money flowing into Iraq.

Do they expect us to believe that they will find anything on Haliburton?

    ReplyDelete
  12. One thing on "Meet The Press" I did find somewhat disturbing though was when, Russert asked Schumer why be voted to confirm General Petraeus when he opposes the surge and Schumer just shrugged him off and said thats on Bush or something to that effect.

That leads me to believe that he and many like him may be approaching this politically instead of doing that which is right, they are taking the easy path that is best for themselves instead of the tougher path that is in our countries best interests.

From his answer it sure looked like he just wants to sit Back and let Bush hang himself and watch the repug party self destruct whiles he says told ya. If the democrats dont support the surge then they should not have voted to confirm a general who put that forth as his plan.

It seems to me Bush fires all the generals who oppose what he wants to happen and then he found a shill willing to be his puppet (Petraeus) and the dems oppose the strategy but confirm the guy, i'm still gonna give them the benefit of the doubt but that looks like them voting for the war all over again with a few non binding resolutions and rebukes in there to cover their ass's.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Petraeus has been on this mess from the beginning, only in a different capacity.

Pushing more worthless idealogues off won't help the Democrats politically.

They need to stop this disaster.

  14. Lydia said "No military power can solve this conflict in Iraq. We can’t fight fire with fire; we need to go above the problem and approach it from a diplomatic or spiritual solution. "

I agree completely that US military power can not resolve this conflict, and that we do need to approach it diplomatically/spiritually, however I would like to add that in order to do that we need to understand the problem andprovide a detailed and coherent strategy to achieve the desired outcome.

Bush and the Neo Cons have clearly proven that either they have absolutely no understanding of the situation in Iraq or they are out to mislead the American people as to what that situation is or some combination of both.

This war is NOT us fighting the evil terrorists, it is a civil war with Sunni and Shia militia's fighting for power with us in the middle and despised and hated by all.

As for solutions Bush and his pack of Neo Con fools have offered none, no solutions, no plan, no goals, no method of assessing his or the OIrai's performance or competence, just more troops and bombs more of the same.

Sending more troops is no more a plan than withdrawing troops and its about time one of the talking heads call this empty rhetoric what it is and point that out.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree Larry but the only way to do that is to impeach Bush and Cheney and that is going to be a long strategic process that likely wouldnt happen till 2008 during the election campaign cycle. and that is the repugs hope, they are hoping the Democrats will let it slide because they wont want an impeachment during the run up to the election because it will look vindictive and be a distraction to both passing good legislation to help our country and to those involved in the 2008 election.

Lydia, this is really great writing, and you truly have illuminated my thoughts as well as yours. A couple of quotes come to mind:

"Blessed are peace makers, for they shall be called the children of God." You know who said that. The second is from Homer's Iliad. It validates what you said about how we internalize that to which we expose ourselves. "We are the stories we tell ourselves." It is my favorite quote.

Thank you! :-) My best wishes to your sister.

  21. I just read the article again, and it is an excellent, well written article that I am in complete agreement with, however I just want to say in Bush's case I really dont think winning the war was ever an objective.

I think his objectives were to use the war and fear of terrorism to seize power domestically just as Hitler did and to ensure American world dominance both militarily and economically by gaining a foothold in the Middle East by installing puppet governments in Iran and iraq that cowtow to American interests and to open up the oil development to American companies so they can makes billions and even trillions developing their oil and gas reserves.

  22. Tomcat, I was reading your profile, and it seems you were quite familiar with Vietnam, would you compare this war more to Vietnam or to Hitlers agression in WW2.

I was too young to really remember much about Vietnam but I feel that although it is a quagmire like Vietnam and although this war is somwhat coldwar like only now its us against muslims instead of communists, I think its more about seizing power and furthering American interests than Vietnam was.

  25. I'm going to claim a little credit for your piece with my comment to TomCat last night :-D

But beautifully written, Lydia. A very powerful piece.

The power of emotion, of intention, as you pointed out in the snowflake piece earlier this month, is undeniable: subtle, but undeniable.

Hate and anger have their roots in fear. That which we fear, we hate, because fear brings us to places inside ourselves to confront those things we dare not look at closely.

We assuage these fears with alcohol, with material things, and yes, often with religion. In moderation, none of these things is bad. In excess, they all are.

We've stopped being human "beings". We define ourselves by what we have, or have not. We've allowed ourselves to be defined by the external: by friends, by relatives, by downstairs neighbors who hate us for what they perceive we are.

Many years ago, after going thru enormous amounts of therapy, I gave up defining myself by others, and found a new well of emotion. I also found the ability to laugh at myself and to laugh at others for not being able to laugh at themselves (like MooMoo ;-) )

I still have work to do (like you, Lydia, I *need* that iPhone!), but I take comfort in knowing I'm on my own road, and not following a pack who don't know a better way.

  29. Hi Mike. That's an interesting question. In Vietnam, the primary motivator for initial involvement was our desire to maintain solidarity with our ally, France. So we financed their war until 1954. Ho had originally tried to ally with the US, because of his relationship with the OSS during WWII, but when we abrogated our agreement with him to support an independent Vietnam, he turned to the Soviets and Red Chinese for support. When the French withdrew, the US was motivated by the fear of communism to install a dictator (Diem) and prevent the free elections promised in the Geneva Accords. At that time, the military industrial complex, about which Eisenhower warned us, was seeing Vietnam as a road to power (military) and profit (industrial).

Congress was duped into supporting the war in Vietnam by false claims about the Gulf of Tonkin incident, like it was in Iraq over false claims about WMD and connections with Al Qaeda. In both Vietnam and Iraq and our leaders failed to recognize that guerrilla forces are almost impossible to crush if they have the support of the people. In both the US installed puppets (Diem and Chalabi) who were not competent to hold power and had less control over the regimes that replaced them. So there are many parallels there.

However, Hitler wanted Germany to become the dominant world power and insure access to raw materials through military conquest, and he used the war as a cover for human rights abuses. This directly parallels Bush in Iraq. If you're not already familiar (which you probably are) check out the AEI's New American Century. Also, Iraq was intended to be a permanent occupation. Why else would Bush build an embassy complex the size of the Vatican City.

So, I guess I don't have a cut and dried answer for you. There are elements of both. Bush's war embodies both the incompetence and public deception of Vietnam with the Machiavellian megalomania of Hitler's aggression.

The fact that life is indeed short makes me wonder how so many can continue to take it for granted, and not show their love and appreciation for everything in their lives, especially people. Such as in my belief about life in and of itself: People first, money and possessions last. I live frugally by choice and savor much.

Ah, yes. Bush. I also believe him to be the antichrist. The fact that he wraps himself up not only in our beloved American flag but in the bible completely disgusts me. He is no more a man of religion than I am a natural blonde.

  43. Tomcat, you left ONE very important item out of your quick history of the run up to Vietnam War which is extremely important to understand why the US Presidents acted the way they did after Eisenhower left office. Right after the Fall of the french at Dien Bien Phu, the Dulles brothers inserted the US into the war against Ho Chi Minh. They had Edward Landsdale begin a CIA operation to destabilize the North in Hanoi, at the same time working to install Diem in the south in Saigon, and when they realized that Ho Chi Minh would get around 90% of the vote they first blocked the elections, and then formalized relations with South Vietnam by creating SEATO which bonded the US to the defense of the South Vietnam. So no matter who won the white house, the US was connected to the South Vietnamese Government by treaty.

They did the same thing, in Tehran in 1953, with the coup by US and British lead by Kermit Roosevelt (CIA Chief)which placed the Shah on the thrown in Iran, and allied HIM to the US and the US to him for the next 25 years until the revolution of 1979. Carter was just following through on promises made in the Eisenhower Administration, exactly what Kennedy was trying to do, and Johnson screwed up so bad doing.

This is exactly what Nixon did with the Saudis in 1972, he promised the US Government would protect a dictatorial Government in Rihyad in exchange for the Saudis only selling their oil in US dollars, which has tied Oil to the Dollar for the last 35 years and tied the US to the Middle east since then...at the same time he made Israel a major US ally in the region.

The re-pubies TIE the US to dictators like Diem, the Shah or King Saud by treaty which no administration then can break without breaking the word of the US Government around the world. It is tricks like this which they use to get what they want NO matter who is in power. With their sneaky actions to bind the US to dictators and corrupt foreign leaders, they can lock the possible paths that Democrats like Kennedy or Carter, or who ever follows Bush can take.

Bush is tying the US to the government in Iraq, by trying to get Maliki to remove his indigenous support and replacing it with the US, thus their attacks on al Sadr as a tool of Iran even though he opposes their involvement in Iraq just as much as he opposes the US's. Bush is just following the old repugnant foreign policy play book of setting up a puppet government which owes it's allegiance to Washington, not their local populace.

However what the Neo-cons do not understand is the Iraqi's who we are trying to fool this time watched Reagan and Bush 43 play this same game with Saddam. They know how it is played and what eventually happens in the end. The Neo-cons can not get what they are after this time in Iraq, because the Iraqis have seen this movie too, and they do not like the roles they are assigned by the neo-cons and how it usually ends.

In a few short years he has succeeded in uniting almost the entire world against us, he even united the Sunni's and Shites who have been warring bitter enemies for a millenium, the Sunni's and Shites worked together to shoot down a USA helicopter and kill Americans.

No GWB is much more a uniter than a divider he has united almost the entire world as well as all decent freedom loving Americans who value life against him and his pack of Neo Con fools, the only thing he has divided has been the repug party, where decent repugs no longer support him or his pack of Neo Con fools.

  54. US chopper down in Iraq battleFrom correspondents in Najaf
    January 29, 2007 06:04am
Article from: ReutersFont size: + -

US and Iraqi forces have killed 250 gunmen in a fierce battle involving US tanks and helicopters on the outskirts of the Shiite holy city of Najaf.

The day-long battle was continuing after nightfall on Sunday, said Colonel Ali Nomas, as tens of thousands of pilgrims converged on the nearby city of Kerbala for the climax of the Ashura commemorations.

A US helicopter was shot down in the fighting. The US military declined comment. A reporter for news agency Reuters saw a helicopter come down trailing smoke.

Shiite political sources said the gunmen appeared to be both Sunni Arabs and Shiites loyal to a cleric called Ahmed Hassani.

In Baghdad, 13 people were killed in bombings in mainly Shiite areas, police said.

Twin car bombs targeting ethnic Kurds killed 16 people as night fell in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, whose population is a volatile mix of Kurds, Turkmen and Sunni and Shiite Arabs.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have converged on Iraq's other main Shiite holy city, Kerbala, for Ashura, marking the 7th century Battle of Kerbala, which helped consolidate the schism between Shiite and Sunni Islam.

It is the first time the 10-day annual ritual has been held since violence erupted last February between Iraq's majority Shiites and once-dominant minority Sunnis. Tens of thousands have since been killed in tit-for-tat killings.

The governor of Najaf province said Iraqi troops fought a day-long battle with up to 200 Sunni gunmen, including foreign fighters, holed up in orchards on the northern outskirts of the city, seat of Iraq's most powerful Shiite clerics.

Governor Asaad Abu Gilel said the authorities had uncovered a plot to kill some of the clerics on Monday, to coincide with the climax of Ashura.

"There is a conspiracy to kill the clergy on the 10th day of Muharram," Najaf governor Abu Gilel said, referring to the day of the Muslim calendar on Monday.

A Reuters reporter about 1.5km from the fighting said he heard intense gunfire and saw US helicopters fire rockets at groves sheltering militants. He saw smoke trailing from one helicopter before it came down in the midst of the fighting.

He was unable to see what had happened to the helicopter, but officers in Iraq's 8th Army Division and policemen said it had crashed and that the two crew members were dead. The US military said it did not comment on operations still taking place.

  55. As a society, we have been conditioned to think in terms of acquisition = self-esteem.

This rates about fourth on the hierarchy of needs, according to Maslow. But it is the highest level of material need.

Once you've transcended this need, you reach a level of intellectual need. You can, of course, backslide in many areas, even once you reach the ultimate set of needs which deal with personal holistic growth.

The point is, to continue to strive upwards. Unfortunately, as with many things of this nature, it's pyramidal, meaning fewer and fewer people achieve that next level.

The ultimate level, self-actualization, is to find one's calling in as many things as possible and to realize and achieve satisfaction spiritually, intellectually, and yes, materially (altho that does not necessarily mean monetarily).

  59. It's important to 'keep hate alive'
    January 26, 2007

Destroying a president is not much of a strategy to win a war, but it's all the Democrats have.
The churls of the left don't seem to care whether their country wins the war, the important thing is to "keep hate alive." If hate worked in '06, maybe it will work again in '08, when the stakes will be considerably higher.
Sometimes it's not only hate, but a bit of schadenfreude, too, taking pleasure in the woes of the enemy. "Partisan pleasure in George Bush's pain dates to the anguish of the contested 2000 election loss," observes Daniel Henninger in the Wall Street Journal. "The Democrats have run against something called 'Bush' for so long this sentiment is now bound up in any act or policy remotely attached to the president. Iraq's troubles, or Iran or North Korea, are merely an artifact of crushing this one guy."
The president's tormentors in Congress, some old and some new, insist they don't have anything against the fine young Americans with their lives on the line in Iraq, but the troops are dispensable to the larger partisan goal of destroying George W. and abdicating the responsibility that comes with being the world's only superpower. If the troops are hurt, too, well, that's just a risk the critics will have to endure.
Senators are leading the rush to judgment. Hillary Clinton, buoyed by the early polls that show her blowing Barack Obama out of the race, scoffs that the war she voted for is "a dead end." Susan Collins of Maine, a Republican, asks whether "the clock has already run out." The very point of her question is the smug assertion that of course it has. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has all but given up his ambition to be John McCain when he grows up, says the obvious: "We have anarchy in Iraq. It's getting worse." You can hear the glee in his voice. John Warner of Virginia, eager to demonstrate that he's no son of the hard, determined men who wrote the book on standing firm against all odds as a fabled army of northern Virginia, rushes to join partisans across the aisle to forge a resolution of regret, retreat and ruin. "Nonbinding," of course. Senators never bind themselves to anything but their egos and personal interests (which is why we haven't elected a senator as president in nearly half a century).
Sometimes a senator, oily and evasive as only senators can be, lets slip a remark that reveals all. David Gregory of NBC News provoked Chuck Schumer, the Democratic senator from New York, into such a revealing remark the other day. He reminded him of Vice President Cheney's description of the Senate resolution as something (a) the president wouldn't pay any attention to because (b) it would "be detrimental to the troops on the ground."
The senator thought he was only begging to differ when he replied: "Absolutely not, and I think it's going to be shown, when this resolution comes up, and it is nonbinding, that not only are we going to get a vast majority of Democrats to vote for it in one form or another, but close to the a majority of the Republicans."
The reporter pressed him to answer the question: "But how can the public really buy the Democrats' support of the troops but don't support the mission? How can you do both?"
How, indeed. How do you tell the troops that "we resolve, to paraphrase John Kerry, you're probably not much better than war criminals, but hey, guys, we support you." Mr. Schumer squirmed, and his face reflected just for an instant the look of a man cornered. "Well," he finally replied, "that's the difficulty. A resolution that says we're against this escalation, that's easy. The next step will be how do you put further pressure on the administration but still support the troops who are there? And that's what we're trying to figure out."
The fiercest critics of the commander in chief (the one the critics despise) and his troops (the ones the critics support) concede they don't have a clue about what the president should do in Iraq. "I can't tell you what the path to success is," says Norm Coleman, a Republican of Minnesota. Joe Biden, plagiarizing every other weak sister in town, says the "primary" strategy is to make the Iraqis "compromise" and "end the violence." Hillary says the president should "talk to bad people" to see what they want (the "bad people" have already said exactly what they want, loud and clear). John Edwards says he would get tough as president, and if talk doesn't work he'll talk some more.
But of course. Isn't that what senators do?

  128. Now that he's gone, we can get back to talking about issues and stuff.

I was in a discussion with perhaps the most elite intellectual mailing list on the planet. It's one of the few places where I'm not the smartest guy in the room.

Anyway, we were talking a little about what Lydia posted last night (that's probably the source of the New Zealand hit you got, Lyd). Ther's an awful lot of conservatives on the list, but they're bright guys and listen to opposing positions.

We were talking about fear, when someone posted the old saw about conservatives being nothing more than liberals who were mugged, something a few of the cons took as a badge of pride.

So, in order to pop a few balloons, I said "I want to understand why people find it acceptable to describe conservatives, particularly neo-cons, as liberals who were mugged?

Doesn't that imply an awful lot of weakness on conservatives' part? As if they changed their minds out of fear, a controllable fear, of their environment?"

How do people like Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz explain their conversion? Truly, if it fear, then what the hell were they doing running a country?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Excellent point Carl that people do not make the wisest decisions when ruled by fear and we need smart people to run our country.

But i'm going to take this in a different direction, I realize I might be out on an island her, but thats what I believe.

I have never believed for one minute Conservatives act out of fear, I think its greed, I dont buy for a minute the Bush and Cheney are really afraid of Muslims, I think the fear tactics are used to sell it to the American people who have proven to be lemmings and sheep and easily deceived the last 5 years.

fear is a VERY powerful emotion Carl, that can easily influence or paralize people, look at the stock market for example, fear is far more powerful than greed.

The Neo Cons are not themselves afraid, rather they use fear, a common enemy and a cause to rally around just as Hitler did to seize power and further his agenda of world domination.

    ReplyDelete
  130. They might be fearful or insecure that others are better or smarter than them or that they cant compete, and thats why all the lies and dirty tricks, but I dont believe they are fearful for their own safety, I think thats just what they use to sell all the Hate, death, destruction of our freedom etc......to the masses.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Tall Texan, I must comment on this one thing: EVERYONE knows that Bush went AWOL on his air force training.

  132. Although political they do sem to attack that which they fear or know they can not beat, look at Clinton, Gore, Obama, if they did not fear these people they would not be trying to destroy them.

Same with Coulter she fears honest debate and truth thats why she never puts herself out there anywhere but a controlled Reich Wing environment, and thats why she has attacked Lydia and her site because she's afraid.

But again I dont think the Neo Cons are actually afraid of the terrorists or even take the war on terror seriously for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Mike,

It's not just political. It's cultural, too. Look at how upset they get when some celebrity gets a billion dollars for making a movie. Rather than accept that the free market is working, suddenly it's "well, we should limit the contract" and stuff like that.

What difference does it make if Alex Rodriguez makes $250 million? If he doesn't, the owner who signed him to it does. Who's the lesser millionaire, the underdog, here?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Lydia,

Rather was forced out not because he was wrong, but because some dumb producer didn't vet the source carefully enough that it was unimpeachable and these jerkwads on the right will accept a liar for President, but god forbid a TV reporter makes an honest mistake that made no difference to the truth!

I read somewhere that one of the Democrats is going to push hard for re-establishment of the Fairness Doctrine.

It's a step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I think it would be a great step, I cant se how it ever got repealed in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Mike,

Two words for ya: Ronald Reagan.

Even in the early 80s, the neo-con thrill kill death cult had a plan to make this nation regress to some primitive chimp-dung-flinging state.

"The FCC under Mark S. Fowler began to repeal parts of the Fairness Doctrine, announcing in 1985 that the doctrine hurt the public interest and violated the First Amendment.

In 1986, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, upheld a loose interpretation by the Reagan administration influenced FCC of an aspect of the Fairness Doctrine, ruling that Congress had "never made the doctrine a binding requirement". In August 1987, the Commission abolished the doctrine by a 4-0 vote, in its Syracuse Peace Council decision. The FCC insisted that the doctrine had grown to inhibit rather than enhance debate and suggested that, due to the many media voices in the marketplace at the time, the doctrine was perceived to be unconstitutional.

In the spring of 1987 Congress attempted to contest the FCC vote and restore the Doctrine (S. 742, 100th Cong., 1st Sess. (1987)), but the legislation was vetoed by President Reagan. Another attempt to resurrect the doctrine in 1991 ran out of steam when President George H.W. Bush threatened another veto."

Mind you that in 1969, the Supreme Court had actually endorsed the Fairness Doctrine and said it did not interfere with First Amendment rights:

"A license permits broadcasting, but the licensee has no constitutional right to be the one who holds the license or to monopolize a... frequency to the exclusion of his fellow citizens. There is nothing in the First Amendment which prevents the Government from requiring a licensee to share his frequency with others.... It is the right of the viewers and listeners, not the right of the broadcasters, which is paramount."
U.S. Supreme Court, upholding the constitutionality of the Fairness Doctrine in Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, 1969.

So Reagan actually violated the Constitution when he repealed the Doctrine.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Violating the Constitution seems to come natural to the repugs even after they swear an oath to defend it.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Before some nutcase from the right argues this statement, let me justify it:

The court said, "There is nothing in the First Amendment which prevents the Government from requiring a licensee to share his frequency with others.... It is the right of the viewers and listeners, not the right of the broadcasters, which is paramount."

This means the Constitution is there to protect the rights of citizens and individuals, not corporations. To deny the citizens the right to balanced opinions is to infringe on their First Amendment right to free speech.

You'll note also that this same argument could conceivably be used to deconstruct the corporate soft and hard money contributions to political candidates and parties. Much of that relies heavily on First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti (1978) in which the court struck down a Massachussetss initiative that banned corporate political spending on the theory that it was a First Amendment issue.

Curiously, a dissent was written by Justice Rehnquist who said, in effect, that Chief Justice Marshall's opinion in Dartmouth College v. Woodward dictated that as a legal entity, a corporation could not be gifted with rights equal to a natural born citizen.

Wish he had still held those beliefs in 2000...

    ReplyDelete
  143. Carl said "This means the Constitution is there to protect the rights of citizens and individuals, not corporations. To deny the citizens the right to balanced opinions is to infringe on their First Amendment right to free speech.

The rights of citizens and viewers certainly need to be protected Carl, they have a right to see truthful unbiased news coverage not a bully pulpit for Reich Wing rhetoric that allows them to deceive the masses.

Somehow they lost tract of those ideals to protect the citizens and are instead protecting the corporate special interests, and Reich Wing partisans instead.

  146. It's funny, because I get accused all the time by those on my left as being a corporatist.

And it's true: capitalism is the best economic system we can find, but we must alter it to suit a human population.

So many precepts and axioms of capitalism simply don't fit our society or any society, for that matter, at least any society that attempts to wrestle with community and humanity.

Christianity and capitalism, for example, are diametrically opposed. Isn't it interesting how Christianity is being forced to conform to capitalism?

    ++++++++++
With respect, Lydia, it is not a fact that everyone knows that Bush went AWOL. During 1972 the Vietnam War was winding down, and these kinds of arrangements were commmon. If you go AWOL, you don't get an honorable discharge. He fullfilled all the obligations for such a discharge, and that is a fact.

With regard to Dan Rather, who has spoken a Democratic fundraisers while he was the anchor the of CBS Evening News (which is a big "no no" in journalism and suggests he was anything but impartial), the letters and reports that led to Rather's earlier-than-planned retirement were determined to have been printed from a computer using Microsoft Word (a version from the late '90s), not documents typed in the 70s.

If the basis for Rather's reporting were forged documents, then he has nothing to substantiate his claims. That would be like me telling you that you were a no-show on TCFC based on emails from the early 80s. How rediculous would that be?? And, yet, Rather persisted in sticking to his "story" that the forged documents were accurate nonetheless. Forged but accurate? Please. It is beyond crazy and does not even pass the laugh test. I would say that Rather got off easy with an earlier-than-planned retirement.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Wow TT. Its fun watching you try to apologize for a man, who if he were a democrat, you'd be burning him in effigy right now.

No, Carl, Reagan did not violate the Constitution. The fact the the Supreme Court ruled the Fairness Doctrine constitutionally permissable does not mean that it is not unconstitutional to not enact it.

The new Democratic-led Congress is on a collision course with the White House over how far lawmakers can or should go to stop the war in Iraq, a dispute that could test the bounds of the Constitution.

She just gets it and so do you. You and her and a few others in my life are the only ones who are religious and/or spiritual that doesn't make me run for the hills when you talk about your beliefs etc. Thank you!!

You and Sue are also alike when you speak George Bush's name....your tone suddenly changes. It's amazing to me how this man does that to a lot of people. I've never despised the office of the presidency before until he came along. His whole government makes my body react in a cerebral way. It's almost as if they're there for a reason....to show us all what evil truly looks like and how it acts. Could be. All I know is that when they're gone, my shoulders will come to rest where they should be resting...instead of past my ears all the time!

And Georgie was AWOL his superiors KNEW Poppy was the head of the National GOP party at that time and covered for the little weasel, Georgie was Awol around 1972 and poppy was the national head of the GOP.

You think some Ltc is gonna write him up at that point?

That Ltc would be ending his career in the Texas National Guard.

Just as Poppy covered up and cleaned up georgies bankrupcies and economic disasters in the corporate world through poppy's friends, they just cleaned up Georgies violations of the military regs as well, it happens more than you would think, when a son of a political leader is involved.

Check out why Al Gore a Spc4 in Vietnam was brought home on orders after only serving 4 months out of a 12 month tour of duty.

BTW Al Gore Sr was a senator from Tennesse at that time, but his daddy didn't pull the strings, just some army Generals not wanting to have to answer for Al Jr's death so the brought him out of the combat zone.

Hell waivers are granted for many things and Georgies commander could have waived his requirements to give Georgie a "honorable Discharge" even though Georgie broke the rules.

  199. He's talking about people getting hurt if this blog doesn't permit right wing articles to be posted endlessly and in their entirety.

He wants to use this liberal blog as a right wing web publishing platform and he is warning us if that is not going to be permitted, then someone could get hurt.
